The spatiotemporal distributions of major phytoplankton taxa were quantified to estimate the relative contribution of different microalgal groups to biomass and bloom dynamics in the eutrophic Neuse River Estuary, North Carolina, USA. Biweekly water samples and ambient physical and chemical data were examined at sites along a salinity gradient from January 1994 through December 1996. Chemosystematic photopigments (chlorophylls and carotenoids) were identified and quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A recently-developed factor-analysis procedure (CHEMTAX) was used to partition the algal group-specific chlorophyll a (chl a) concentrations based on photopigment concentrations. Results were spatially and temporally integrated to determine the ecosystem-level dynamics of phytoplankton community-constituents. Seasonal patterns of phytoplankton community-composition changes were observed over the 3 yr. Dinoflagellates reached maximum abundance in the late winter to early spring (January to March), followed by a spring diatom bloom (May to July). Cyanobacteria were more prevalent during summer months and made a large contribution to phytoplankton biomass, possibly in response to nutrient-enriched freshwater discharge. Cryptomonad blooms were not associated with a particular season, and varied from year to year. Chlorophyte abundance was low, but occasional blooms occurred during spring and summer. Over the 3 yr period, the total contribution of each algal group, in terms of chl a, was evenly balanced, with each contributing nearly 20% of the total chl a. Cryptomonad, chlorophyte, and cyanobacterial dynamics did not exhibit regular seasonal bloom patterns. High dissolved inorganic-nitrogen loading during the summer months promoted major blooms of cryptomonads, chlorophytes, and cyanobacteria.  The variations in both silica content and spicular size were studied in two populations of the demosponge Pellina semitubulosa (Lieberkühn). Samples were collected over a period of 1 year (June 1994 to May 1995) in two Mediterranean coastal basins: Porto Cesareo (southwestern Apulia) and Marsala (northwestern Sicily). The values of spicule size (length and width) and sponge silica content were significantly higher in the population of Porto Cesareo, where the highest water silica concentration was recorded. In both Porto Cesareo and Marsala the sponge silica content showed a seasonal trend, positively correlated with water temperature values. In both populations, the smallest spicules were found in specimens collected from summer to late autumn, after sexual reproduction. Secretion of new spicules may be connected with the process of remodelling occurring in sponges after gamete and larval release. Received: 10 October 1999 / Accepted: 13 April 2000  相似文献

Spatial and temporal variation of resource limitation in Chesapeake Bay   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
We report nutrient addition bioassays at 18 stations in Chesapeake Bay (USA) to assess resources limiting phytoplankton growth. Data were pooled from several sampling programs conducted from 1989 to 1994. Spatially, light and P limitation declined from low salinity regions to high salinity regions, as N limitation increased. This spatial pattern was driven primarily by freshwater inflows with high N/P and seawater inflows with low N/P. Seasonally, there was a marked progression of winter light limitation, spring P limitation, and summer N limitation at mesohaline and polyhaline stations. The seasonal pattern appeared to be caused by temperature, mixing, river discharge, and sediment P fluxes. At high salinity stations, we also observed winter N limitation (caused by DIN depletion prior to spring nitrate delivery), and at lower salinity stations there was fall P limitation (caused by reaeration of bottom sediments). At tidal fresh stations, turbidity and nutrient concentrations resulted in continuous light limitation, except at some stations in summer. Interannual decreases in light limitation and increases in N and P limitation appear to represent improvements in water quality. Received: 31 October 1997 / Accepted: 18 December 1998  相似文献

The spatial distribution of phytoplankton assemblages, chlorophyll, primary production and physical and chemical parameters were studied in the Pontevedra Ria in Galicia (NW Iberian Peninsula) from October 1997 to October 1998. In addition to the usual oceanographic periods described for the Galician Coast, two other periods were observed: a Prebloom or winter bloom, occurring during calm, sunny days in winter and a Continental period, related to the allochthonous intrusion of low salinity water from the Miño River in late spring. The phytoplankton biomass and production in both periods reached values of up to 145 mgChl-a m?2 and 3.6 gC m?2 day?1, respectively, which were similar to those found in summer upwelling blooms. Throughout the year, the phytoplankton biomass and primary production gradients along the ria’s axis were highly dependent on the balance between upwelling and runoff. When the latter prevailed, increased values were measured toward the inner ria, while the opposite pattern was observed during summer upwelling blooms. According to projections derived from climate models and the analysis of wind patterns, temperature and precipitation trends in the area, a drop in the productivity of the ria would be expected as a result of reduced upwelling intensity in summer and decreasing rainfall in spring. In any case the estuarine part of the ria would be the most seriously affected.  相似文献

Long-term dynamics (1960-1997) of the cladoceran species Bosmina coregoni maritima, Evadne nordmanni and Podon spp. are described for the Gdansk Deep and the Gotland Basin (Central Baltic Sea). By using correlation analyses on seasonal time-series, the influence of temperature and salinity on the abundance of cladoceran species was investigated. A clear affinity to higher temperature was found for B. coregoni maritima in summer as well as for E. nordmanni and Podon spp. in spring. In addition to temperature, association tests with salinity revealed besides species-specific preferences, regional and temporal differences. Contrary to B. coregoni maritima, both other species were positively associated to salinity in summer and autumn in the Gdansk Deep. In the Gotland Basin only E. nordmanni was positively correlated to salinity in autumn. Differences in the response to hydrographic variables are possibly stage specific, i.e. between resting eggs and adults, or due to a different adaptation to the abiotic environment.  相似文献

The mutualistic association between the sponge Haliclona caerulea and the calcareous red macroalga Jania adherens is conspicuous on shallow rocky regions of Mazatlán Bay (eastern tropical Pacific, Mexico). Transplanting experiments were carried out to examine the morphological responses of the association to an environmental depth gradient. Simultaneously, we conducted caging experiments to examine the effects of predation (mainly by angelfishes) on association morphology. For this, we transplanted specimens of the association from a control area at 3 m depth to depths of 1 and 5 m, and measured the morphological responses in the association (macro- and microstructure) from the three sites before and after 103 days. The association had the capacity to adjust both macro and micromorphologically, and both external morphology and body structure changed significantly with depth. The specimens grown at 1 m developed a larger surface area of attachment, higher organic density and higher inorganic content than the control specimens at 3 m, and the organisms grown at 5 m depth. We also detected significant differences in the aquiferous system of the sponge, which developed smaller and more numerous oscula at 1 m than at 5 m depth. These differences seem to be consistent with the wave movement as one of the main regulatory factors of the morphology of the association. However, the spicules from H. caerulea were most slender in shallow water, which is not consistent with increasing robustness in the face of greater wave force. The algal skeleton supplied up to 27% of the total inorganic structure of the association; thus, algal contribution significantly reduces the energy costs of spicule production, specifically under high wave exposure, when H. caerulea requires structural reinforcement relative to organic content. The contribution of the sponge to the association (as ratio Si to CaCO3) increased significantly from 3 to 5 m (12% in the uncaged specimens and 22% in the caged specimens), showing that the mutualistic relationship decreases with depth. The production of sponge branches in caged individuals was the most notable difference from uncaged morphs, which could suggest the effect of predators like angelfishes. However, branches could also be a response to the reduction in water movement and irradiance inside the cages. Sponges are known to show morphological acclimation in response to habitat variation, but this is the first study to show it in a sponge living in association with a macroalga.  相似文献

Both morphological and electrophoretic isozyme variation were examined in Cucumaria curata Cowles, 1907, a common intertidal holothurian of the West Coast of North America. This species has also been described under the name C. pseudocurata Deichmann, 1938. Thirteen populations were sampled. Spicule density, and shape, tentacle size and number of papillae at the male gonopore were determined. Five of the populations were examined for variability in 8 isozymes. Spicule densities varied between populations by more than an order of magnitude. The spicule shapes were the same for all populations although the ratios of the different types varied. No relationship was found between geographical location or habitat and any of the morphological characters. No polymorphisms or variation between populations were found in any of the 8 enzymes analyzed by electrophoresis. However, the morphological data indicate random differentiation between populations. The data indicate the existence of only a single species and thus the name C. pseudocurata should be considered a synonym of C. curata.Contribution No. 2 of the Bodega Marine Sciences Association and PACTREX Report No. 2.  相似文献

The reproduction of Eurytemora velox, a brackish copepod from temporary lakes of the south of France, was studied in winter and spring 1978, under various temperature and salinity conditions, using Chlorella sp. and Amphidinium sp. as food. Maximum numbers of successive eggs sacs (9), eggs per sac (39.3) and total egg production per female (311) were recorded for the witner generation, only 4.8, 34.8 and 109, respectively, for the spring generation. In contrast, the number of eggs per female per day was highest (11.3) in the spring generation, which displayed a more rapid reproductive cycle. Despite strong individual variations in the rhythm of egg sac production and in abundance of eggs per sac, egg production was generally higher during the first third of adult life, attaining a maximum after production of the second or the third egg sac. The continuous presence of the males was necessary to assure complete fertilization of eggs throughout the whole life of adult females. Hatching rate displayed high individual variability, in particular for the spring generation, which had lower average hatching rates (between 0 and 26%, depending on salinity or temperature) than the winter generation (14 to 64%). These differences may be related to the ability of E. velox to produce resting eggs during spring, allowing the species to maintain itself in a temporary water milieu. Temperature significantly affected longevity and daily egg production of females; presence or absence of males did not affect these parameters. An increase in salinity from 20 to 30%. reduced longevity, number of egg sacs, and daily egg production in the winter generation, but not in the spring generation. The specific daily production of females during their adult life was calculated from the egg production:biomass ratio of females, in carbon units. In the winter generation, this ratio increased between 10° and 15°C compared to ratios between 15° and 20°C; the opposite was observed for the spring generation. The seasonal differences in the effects of temperature and salinity on reproduction could indicate an adaptation mechanism to the strongly thermal and haline seasonal fluctuations which characterize the habitat of Ex. velox (brackish waters, drying-up in summer). Larval mortality was high, except at 20%. S for the spring generation. The sex-ratio of the offspring was unaffected by variations in breeding conditions. Hatching time and development time of larvae could be described by two Blehrádek equations displaying close b and () coefficients. We calculated the energy balance of adult females from data obtained in a previous study on feeding and respiration in E. velox, and this is discussed in context with the egg production results. Net growth efficiency varied with algal concentration according to an asymptotic curve, reaching a maximum of 0.43 with Tetraselmis maculata as food or 0.53 with Amphidinium sp. Actual egg production rate obtained in the present study was in good agreement with that calculated by the difference between assimilated food and respiration expenses.  相似文献

We investigated feeding by the hogchoker, Trinectes maculatus (Bloch and Schneider), in freshwater, oligohaline, mesohaline, and polyhaline regions of Chesapeake Bay, USA, and examined prey selection in relation to food availability. Otter trawling for fish and Van Veen grab sampling for benthic macrofauna occurred in July and August 1992 and August and September 1993. Hogchokers exhibited both opportunistic and selective feeding patterns along the estuarine salinity gradient in four tributaries (Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James Rivers) and in the mainstem Chesapeake Bay. Major prey taxa included annelids, arthropods, and tellinid siphons. In polyhaline habitat, polychaetes dominated both the benthos and gut contents numerically and gravimetrically. On the other hand, oligochaetes were numerically dominant in freshwater/oligohaline areas but were rarely eaten, perhaps because of their burial depth. Arthropods (mostly amphipods) occurred at most salinities, were common in gut contents in low-salinity areas, and were replaced as prey by larger proportions of polychaetes in polyhaline regimes. Although hogchokers ate tellinid siphons, they rarely consumed whole bivalves or gastropods. These diet patterns (and especially the importance of siphon nipping) are similar to those of juvenile or small flatfish elsewhere in Europe, Africa, and North America. A size–salinity relationship for hogchokers occurred along the summer salinity gradient, with smaller fish predominating upstream and larger fish downstream. It was not clear from our data if variation in diet composition reflected changes in prey composition along the salinity gradient rather than changes in fish size. The membrane fluidity of the Baltic Sea crustaceans Gammarus spp. and Monoporeia affinis was studied in different seasons. Gammarus spp. were collected at a location with stable salinity and with temperature fluctuations from about 0 to 20 °C, and M. affinis at a deep location with stable salinity and a constant low temperature of about 1.5 to 4.5 °C. The membrane fluidity was measured from preparations enriched with plasma and mitochondrial membranes employing a fluorescence polarization technique using 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) as a probe. The measurements were carried out without any preceding acclimation of the animals. In Gammarus spp., the membrane fluidity increased in the order: summer animals < autumn animals < spring animals. The differences between seasons were significant, with pronounced homeoviscous adaptation, and correlated well with the water temperature. It is suggested that in Gammarus spp., temperature is the determining factor for membrane fluidity. In M. affinis, the membranes of summer animals were the most fluid, and there was a significant difference only between summer and spring animals. In M. affinis the difference was not connected to the water temperature and no homeoviscous adaptation was noticed. The deep-water M. affinis experience a long period of fresh food deficiency, which probably affects the membrane fluidity. Although there are seasonal differences in fluidities between Gammarus spp. and M. affinis, it is interesting to note that all data obtained from M. affinis settled between the polarization lines of spring and summer Gammarus spp., regardless of the prevailing temperatures. The formation of the calcareous spicules of the Didemnidae has been studied in the oozooid of Trididemnum cereum (Giard, 1872). The first spicules become visible within the paired, goblet-shaped lateral organs. From there, they appear gradually throughout the entire tunic. A histological study confirmed this in vivo observation. Moreover, in the region of the lateral organs, a certain relationship between the growing spicule and one single cell is visible, both in the light and electron microscopes. In addition, electron micrographs show that the spicule is surrounded by a double-layered membrane. Therefore, it seems unlikely that the spicules of the Didemnidae owe their existence exclusively to physico-chemical processes. Thus, the systematic value of the spicules cannot be doubted.

Leptocheirus pinguis (Stimpson, 1853) is a widely distributed, abundant, endobenthic amphipod that engages in extended parental care, i.e. females host their juveniles in their burrows for extended time periods. I examined reproduction and population biology of L. pinguis at mean low water (MLW) in muddy sediment in Lowes Cove, Maine, USA. Cores around individual burrows were taken monthly in 1994 and 1995, and four seasonal samples were taken at different tidal heights. During the major reproductive periods in spring/early summer and in the fall, females produced several consecutive broods and hosted growing offspring in their burrows. Juveniles remained in their mothers' burrows until they reached a length of 5 mm (approximately one-third adult size) or more. At the study site, the majority of amphipods in individual burrows were adult females. Following the main reproductive periods, subadult individuals were found in their own burrows, but densities did not increase following the reproductive period in spring/early summer 1994, probably because large numbers of L. pinguis emigrated via the water column between June and December. L. pinguis is an annual species. Many members of the cohort born in spring/early summer start reproducing in the fall, and survive until the following spring when they produce several broods. Members of the cohort born in the fall start reproducing the following spring and also produce several consecutive broods. Both the spring/early summer and fall cohorts die off after the major reproductive period in the following spring/early summer. High standing stocks of microphytobenthos occur in soft-bottoms at MLW, and I conclude that L. pinguis can engage in extended parental care there because its food is abundant year-round. The limited expandability and low stability of burrows in soft-bottoms at MLW do not permit long persistence of parent–offspring groups in L.␣pinguis. In the northern Adriatic Sea, Mediterranean Sea, the mucilage phenomenon is usually related to the aggregation of extracellular organic matter of phytoplanktonic origin under special seasonal and trophic conditions. Environmental factors, such as temperature, salinity, nitrogen, phosphorus and N/P ratio as well as polysaccharide and monosaccharide levels in the presence and absence of mucilage were investigated in the northern Adriatic Sea. Variations in temperature and salinity during spring in years characterised by mucilage events have been recognised having an important role in preparing a favourable physical environment where mucilage formation could take place. Since the DIN/TP ratio increased markedly during the spring months (March–April) in 2002, 2003 and 2004, preceding the early summer mucilage outbreaks, it appeared that the DIN/TP ratio may be a more robust predictor than the DIN/DIP ratio, which, although more commonly used, exhibited a discontinuous trend. The contents of total carbohydrates, including monosaccharides and polysaccharides, in seawater also varied according to the presence or absence of mucilage, with an increase of polysaccharide levels during the late spring or early summer in the period of the mucilage appearance. The role of carbohydrates in the macro-aggregate formation was also investigated.  相似文献

The sea butterfly Limacina helicina was collected from May to September 2001 in Kongsfjorden, Spitsbergen, to investigate population structure and body and lipid composition with regard to life cycle and reproductive strategy. Veligers and juveniles were only found in late autumn and spring, whereas females occurred from July to September. The size of the females increased until mid-August and decreased in September. Dry and lipid mass were closely related to size; dry mass increased exponentially and lipids linearly with size. The lipid content was highest in veligers (31.5% of dry mass) and juveniles (23.6%) but low in females (<10%). Phospholipids were the dominating lipid class followed by triacylglycerols. Females, veligers, and egg ribbons, all from September, were richest in phospholipids. Juveniles contained the highest amounts of triacylglycerols, whereas females had low levels in July and the beginning of August. In mid-August, levels of triacylglycerols were variable and higher. This suggests that females were in their main spawning period and the high variability in triacylglycerols points to different stages within the spawning cycle. Enhanced amounts of free fatty acids in females from July may be related to gonad development. The 16:1(n-7) fatty acid was more dominant in spring whereas 18:4(n-3) increased in summer and autumn, which reflects a change in diet from diatom-dominated food items in spring to dinoflagellates in summer/autumn. Small amounts of long-chain monounsaturated fatty acids suggest ingestion of copepods, and the fatty acid composition of veligers feeding on particulate matter. L. helicina has a one-year life cycle with peak spawning in August and over-winters as veligers that may grow to juveniles during the winter period. They metamorphose into juveniles during spring, develop to males in early summer, and mature into females in July and August.Communicated by M. Kühl, Helsingør  相似文献

Anthelia glauca Lamarck, 1816 is a gonochoric, external-brooding soft coral found in KwaZulu-Natal. It is reproductively active in the summer months. The development of gametes produced in late summer is arrested in winter. Several stages of gametes are found at the base of the polyps, and female polyps produce several cycles of larvae over an extended breeding period of 4 to 5 months. Larvae are brooded in a unique pharyngeal brooding pouch not yet described in other coral species. The brood pouch consists of an expansion of the pharynx with constrictions proximal and distal to the embryos and larvae. Our data suggest that egg transfer and fertilization occur at full moon and the mature larvae are released after new moon. Zooxanthellae are absent in A. glauca oocytes, but zooxanthella infestation commences at the immature larval stage. Received: 15 July 1997 / Accepted: 12 March 1998  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to establish reproductive phenology of the dioecious marine floridean red alga Polysiphonia lanosa (L.) Tandy. Specifically, the distribution and frequencies of male and female plants, timing of their sexual maturity, fecundity and success of fertilization were investigated. The presence of cystocarps was taken as an indication of syngamy. Populations of P. lanosa in the Bay of Fundy reproduce in spring, summer and autumn. Both male and female filaments were present in equal abundance at all sampling locations, grew in close proximity, and occurred with equal abundance at all elevations above chart datum. During the growing season most of the mature plants contained reproductive organs with apparently functional gametangia containing gametes the structure and behavior of which conformed to those reported in the literature for other species of the genus. Male and female plants of P. lanosa matured synchronously during late May to early July at all collecting sites. The ratio of spermatia to carpogonia calculated for the sampled population was high, 3000–4800 spermatia:1 carpogonium. At the end of the growing season (late October) the fertilization success was at its maximum of 50 to 90% and at its minimum in July at 24%. The three free-living life-history phases (females, males and tetrasporophytes) were abundant and occurred with equal frequency, indicating that a complete life cycle was common at the studied location. When echinoids feed on sponges, silicate spicules of the sponge were found to enter their body either by penetration through the wall of the food canal into coelomic cavities or by penetration into skeletal plates and spines. The spicules, which have penetrated into the coelom, obviously evoke a kind of protective answer. They were found to be entangled by clusters of cell remnants, the so-called brown bodies. The brown bodies contain melanin and gather at special sites of the echinoid body; these are the Stewart Organs, the gills and the inner side of the ambulacral plates. Sometimes the silicate spicule becomes surrounded by a calcareous sheath. The length of the sponge spicules makes their removal impossible, so that they are stored. The spicules penetrating into the plates are partly incorporated into the stereom. The four species examined in this study were Asthenosoma ijimai, Araeosoma owstoni, Diadema setosum (collected in Sagami Bay, Japan in 1991) and Hapalosoma gemmiferum (collected in Suruga Bay, Japan in 1991).  相似文献

Female mud crabs, Rhithropanopeus harrisii, carrying newly extruded eggs, were collected from the Petaluma River (San Francisco Bay Estuarine System, California, USA) in summer 1985, and exposed to factorial combinations of temperature (20°, 25° or 30°C) and salinity (2, 5, 15, 25, or 32%.). Upon hatching, dry weights of 12 to 15 h-old zoeae were determined. Subgroups of the remaining zoeae were transferred from hatching salinities to the salinities listed above and raised until metamorphosis to megalopa. Low salinities reduced zoeal dry weights by as much as 25%. Temperature played a secondary role in reduction of hatching weight of zoeae. Survival of larvae through zoeal development was best when hatching and rearing salinities were the same; in this case, overall survival increased with temperature. Both duration of zoeal development and megalopal dry weights were strongly influenced by temperature and rearing salinity, with only a small contribution from hatching salinity. The influence of hatching salinity was most obvious at extremes of the range tested. These studies indicate that physical conditions during embryogenesis profoundly influence subsequent larval development. Interpretation of experimental approaches to study ecophysiological adaptations of larval stages should not neglect the role of physical conditions during embryogenesis.  相似文献

The distribution of moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita Linnaeus, 1758) in the Black Sea was determined from plankton samples collected above the anoxic zone (maximum depth 200 m) in the summer, winter and spring during 1991–1995. Distribution was patchy. Average biomass ranged from 98 to 380 g m−2, and abundance varied from 2 to 14 individuals m−2. Biomass and abundance peaked in late spring and summer. The distribution was correlated with hydrographic features in the Black Sea, with higher concentrations occurring at the peripheries of anticyclonic eddies. Centers of the two main cyclonic gyres generally had a low biomass of A. aurita. From July 1992 to March 1995, the populations were largely concentrated in offshore regions. A. aurita were confined to the upper part of the mixed layer. Smaller A. aurita (≤1 cm) were present in early spring (March), and individuals reached maximum size in the summer. Release of the epyhrae occurred in spring on the northwestern shelf of the sea when the seawater temperature was 11–12 °C. Microscopic analysis of stomach contents showed that copepods and mollusks form their main diet. Received: 3 September 2000 / Accepted: 29 September 2000  相似文献

Temperature is known to have a strong influence on cephalopod growth during the early exponential growth phase. Most captive growth studies have used constant temperature regimes and assumed that populations are composed of identically sized individuals at hatching, overlooking the effects of seasonal temperature variation and individual hatchling size heterogeneity. This study investigated the relative roles of initial hatchling size and simulated natural seasonal temperature regimes on the growth of 64 captive Octopus pallidus over a 4-month period. Initial weights were recorded, and daily food consumption and fortnightly growth monitored. Two temperature treatments were applied replicating local seasonal water temperatures: spring/summer (14–18°C) and summer/autumn (18–14°C). Overall octopuses in the spring/summer treatment grew at a rate of 1.42% bwd−1 (% body weight per day) compared to 1.72% bwd−1 in the summer/autumn treatment. Initial size influenced growth rate in the summer/autumn treatment with smaller octopuses (<0.25 g) growing faster at 1.82% bwd−1 compared to larger octopuses at 1.68% bwd−1. This was opposite to individuals in the spring/summer treatment where smaller octopuses grew slower at 1.29% bwd−1 compared to larger octopuses at 1.60% bwd−1. Initial size influenced subsequent growth, however, this was dependent on feeding rate and appears to be secondary to the effects of temperature.  相似文献
