Arm damage and loss were examined in the starfish Asterias rubens that had been caught in a variety of towed commercial fishing gears deployed on different sea bed types. Between 7% and 38% of the starfish in each catch lost one or more arms, and arm loss was positively correlated with the volume of the catch for two of the fishing gears examined. Subsequent monitoring of damaged animals showed that arms were autotomised for at least 3 weeks following capture. Mortality was highest in starfish with damaged or missing arms, compared with those that appeared intact after fishing. Arm regeneration was delayed in a small proportion of the animals caught by commercial gears. In a parallel study, 17% of starfish caught by a 4 m beam trawl had a damaged ambulacral ossicle at the point of autotomy (cf. none from a control group that were induced to autotomise under controlled conditions). There was no difference in regeneration rates between the animals caught by commercial gears and a control set (caught by a small trawl and forced to autotomise an arm in the laboratory) once the animals that delayed regeneration were excluded from the dataset. After 1 year under laboratory conditions the starfish had, on average, regenerated the missing arm to 75% of the length of the other four arms. During this time period the lengths of the undamaged arms increased by ca. 50%. The implications of this study for using arm loss in starfish as an indicator of fishing disturbance are discussed.  Arm damage is a widely reported but superficially investigated aspect of the biology of the starfish Asterias rubens L. In the present study, the incidence of arm damage was surveyed in populations of A.rubens at two sites in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland, and three sites in Gullmarsfjorden, Sweden. The mean (±SD) incidence across all sites of individuals with basal arm damage (resulting from detachment at the basal autotomy plane) was 19.69 ± 8.86%, the incidence of those with distal arm damage (resulting from amputation at more distal levels) was 7.74 ± 10.01%. The mean incidence of arms with basal damage was 5.28 ± 4.12%, of those with distal damage 1.83 ± 2.45%. There was a significant negative correlation between size and the incidence of basal damage at all but one site, but no significant correlation between size and distal damage at any site. Mechanical tests on specimens of the aboral body wall from the basal region of the arm (which included the autotomy plane) and from a more distal region revealed that with increasing body size there was a significant increase in yield stress, ultimate stress and Young's modulus (stiffness) but no significant change in yield strain and ultimate strain. There was no significant difference between the relationships for basal and distal specimens. It is hypothesised that in larger individuals increased mechanical toughness replaces autotomy as an effective antipredator strategy. Using two methods to induce autotomy, a significant positive correlation between size and the delay between the onset of stimulation and arm detachment was found; this may represent a size-related decline in the efficiency of the autotomy mechanism through the relaxation of selection pressure. Since size is an unreliable indicator of age in A.rubens, the trends identified herein can be interpreted only tentatively as age-associated phenomena. The regeneration rate of arms of the infaunal brittlestar Ophiophragmus filograneus was determined in natural and planted beds of the seagrass (Halodule wrighttii) in Tampa Bay, Florida, USA in 1990. Annually, brittlestar densities did not differ on average between the two beds, but they did show marked differences on individual dates. Rates of arm loss could not be determined for the two sites separately, but were estimated for the entire area. Between 52 and 94% of the brittlestars collected showed evidence of arm regeneration. Approximately one-third of those collected were regenerating one arm, with smaller proportions regenerating two or more arms. Regeneration rate was greater overall for individuals that had lost more tissue; however, the rate of soft-tissue regeneration per arm regenerated was significantly greater for those that had lost one arm compared to those that had lost three arms. The rate of soft-tissue regeneration did not differe between individuals from the two seagrass beds, and regeneration rate was lower than reported for other infaunal brittlestars. Skeletal regeneration per arm was similar in both arm-removal treatments. This result supports the hypothesis that echinoderm skeleton is energetically inexpensive and may help to lengthen arms during early regeneration. The rate of skeletal production was three-fold greater in individuals from the planted seagrass than in those from the natural. bed. As increased skeletal regeneration requires some additional energy, this indicates a greater energy expenditure and differential allocation by brittlestars regenerating in the planted seagrass areas.  相似文献

Eighteen percent and 47% of two populations of Ophiocoma echinata in the Florida Keys were undergoing regeneration. An individual would take approximately 720 days to completely regenerate three arms. Regeneration of three arms had a greater effect on gonad production in females than in males, and reduced storage material in the stomach of both. Regeneration in O. echinata was estimated to be 0.07 kJ m-2 day-1, which could provide the equivalent of 0.07% of primary production on a reef to higher trophic levels per day.  相似文献

Blue mussels, Mytilus spp., have inhabited the brackish Baltic Sea, an environment lacking predatory crabs and starfish, for several thousand years. In this paper we examined whether Baltic Mytilus that were transplanted to the North Sea showed predator-inducible plasticity like their "marine" conspecifics. Our experiments showed that native North Sea Mytilus changed their morphology when exposed to waterborne scents from shore-crabs and starfish. These predators induced different kinds of changes, with emphasis on shell thickness and adductor muscle size, respectively. Baltic Mytilus responded in a similar way to crab scents, whereas starfish scents had a relatively weak effect on the morphology. Crab and starfish scent induced strengthening of the byssal attachment in North Sea Mytilus, with crabs providing more stimulation than starfish. Baltic mussels also improved the byssal attachment when exposed to either of the predators, but the attachment strength, as well as the response to crabs, were relatively weaker than that of North Sea mussels. We conclude that inducible plasticity still is present in Baltic Mytilus, despite their recent evolution in a predator-free environment. There is probably no strong selective pressure against inducible plasticity, but it could also be maintained in the population by gene flow from Mytilus in the adjoining North Sea. The question whether Baltic Mytilus are M. edulis or M. trossulus may also be relevant for the present results.  相似文献

To measure amounts of tissue lost in natural populations of the burrowing amphiurid ophiuroid Microphiopholis gracillima (Stimpson), individuals were collected from subtidal mud flats in North Inlet, South Carolina, USA, at monthly intervals between February 1985–February 1987 and December 1989–November 1990. Between 20 and 70% of all individuals were regenerating the disc, and 85% of the 2045 arms examined had regeneration scars; >50% had one scar and some arms had up to 4 scars. Fewer individuals were regenerating discs in warmer months, but there was no seasonality in arm-loss frequency. To quantify rates of arm regeneration in the field, individuals which had 1, 2, or 3 arms removed were placed in mud-filled cores in the field in late July and November 1988 and in March and May 1989, and recovered after periods of about one month. Another set of cores was held in a running seawater laboratory during the May 1989 experiment. No regeneration occurred during the cooler times of year (November and March), and rates of regeneration were slower in May (total: 0.13 mg/d; tissue: 0.03 mg/d) than July (total: 0.17 mg/d; tissue: 0.05 mg/d). These rates indicate complete replacement of lost tissue in 100 to 120 d during the growth season. Within experiments, per arm regeneration rates were similar regardless of the number of arms removed. This finding is complicated by small sample size, high variability and low statistical power, but in general individuals which lost 2 or 3 arms regenerated proportionally more tissue than individuals which lost 1 arm. Individuals held in the laboratory regenerated the same amount of tissue but 30% less skeleton than individuals in the field. Sublethal tissue loss is common in this population, and M. gracillima is capable of regenerating at least 50% (each arm=17% of total body weight x 3) of its standing crop in a single growing season. Burrowing brittlestars probably constitute a significant renewable energy source for higher trophic levels in areas where they occur in dense populations.  相似文献

Autotomy of expendable body parts is often a successful last-chance antipredatory defense for a variety of invertebrates and vertebrates, especially lizards. However, loss of a body part imposes costs and risks, some of which may be reduced by modifying subsequent behavior. I studied effects of experimentally induced autotomy of the tail in the keeled earless lizard (Holbrookia propinqua) on use of cover, escape behavior, activity, and feeding. Autotomized lizards stayed closer to plant cover than sham-autotomized lizards (having intact tails) when approached by an investigator simulating a predator. Autotomized males, but not females, fled further than sham-autotomized lizards. Autotomy did not affect the distance from an approaching predator when the lizards began to flee. After autotomy, the number of days on which lizards were active differed between sexes and lizards made fewer attempts to catch prey per unit time than lizards with intact tails. Tail loss did not affect the percentage of time spent moving. Staying closer to refuge, fleeing further after autotomy, and decreasing surface activity may compensate for decreased maximum escape speed or agility, and may reflect use of a greater margin of safety when the tail is unavailable for autotomy. Decrease in surface activity may be comparable to use of safer microhabitats reported for other lizards and damselflies subsequent to autotomy. Several possible reasons for the lower rate of feeding attempts by autotomized lizards are discussed.  相似文献

Size advantage in male–male competition over mates, combined with male preference over large females, is a common feature that can drive to size assortative mating and, eventually, sexual selection. In crabs, appendage autotomy can affect assortative mating and opportunity for sexual selection by affecting size advantage in mating contests. In this work, we evaluate the effect of size and appendage autotomy in generating assortative mating in the mud crab Cyrtograpsus angulatus. Field observations of guarding pairs in two different populations show a positive correlation between carapace width of males and females in both the populations. In one of the populations, incidence of appendage autotomy was low and the variability in the size of reproductive males was lower than the variability in the size of randomly collected males (i.e. only larger males were successful in getting a female), whereas there was no differences in the other population (i.e. most male sizes were successful) where the incidence of appendage autotomy was very high, indicating that the importance of size is higher when the incidence of autotomy is low. In this context, experiments (in both populations) show that, in contests for a female, larger males outcompete smaller ones only when they had intact appendages. When males had missing chelipeds, winning or loosing against smaller males was random. This may lead to a decrease in the importance of male size in populations with high incidence of cheliped autotomy, affecting assortative mating and opportunity for selection and, thus, affecting selective pressures.  相似文献

A sharp increase in alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity occurred 7 d after arm autotomy inAsterias forbesi. This activity remained elevated at 20 d post-autotomy, during which time active ossicle-calcification was occurring. By 60 d post-autotomy, AP activity had returned to the level of non-regenerating individuals. Conversely, carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity exhibited no initial change in response to arm autotomy. By Day 60 a 50% increase in CA activity was observed. AP is localized in the outer membranes and associated microvilli of the coelomic epithelium and is not associated directly with the tissues involved in calcification. CA activity was highest in the tissues containing the ossicles, but was also present in the non-calcifying tube feet. These data suggest that inA. forbesi AP is involved in cell division and differentiation associated with wound-healing and the initiation of the regeneration process, and that CA may facilitate the ongoing maturation process, of newly formed ossicles.  相似文献

Crickets can autotomize a limb in order to evade predation; however, this autotomy compromises their escape speed and, therefore, their ability to avoid subsequent predation events. We recorded two measures of predator-avoidance behaviour in field crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus) exposed to varying levels of predation threat, with the most extreme level leading to autotomy of a limb. Our first measure of caution was time to emergence from cover, which was affected by perceived predation treatment, with both autotomized males and females being significantly more cautious than intact individuals. For males (but not females), the presence of a calling conspecific encouraged earlier emergence. Our second measure of caution was alteration of male calling behaviour. Autotomized males remained silent for significantly longer time after disturbance than intact males, but there was no difference in call rate once they had resumed calling, suggesting that behavioural changes were not merely a result of injury response but a controlled modification of behaviour as a result of autotomy. These data suggest that autotomy in field crickets results in altered calling behaviour, which was not significantly altered with different acoustic environments.  相似文献

Two laboratory experiments were conducted on Ophiocoma echinata (Lamarck, 1816) collected from Missouri Key, Florida, USA, to ascertain the effects of arm regeneration on energy storage and gonad production. In each experiment individuals were divided into non-regenerating (all arms intact) and regenerating (three arms autotomized) groups and maintained together in a re-circulating seawater system for 2 mo. In Experiment 1, individuals were fed once a week, and in Experiment 2 once every 2 wk. The amount of food energy required for maintenance was estimated to be 0.172 kJ d−1. The lower feeding level (Experiment 2) was below maintenance ration and both groups lost material relative to an initial group. At the higher feeding level (Experiment 1), regeneration of three arms resulted in less storage of organic material, mainly lipid in the stomach, and less gonad production. Thus, regeneration may reduce energy reserves and reproductive output. Received: 23 April 1998 / Accepted: 11 January 1999  相似文献

When females receive no direct benefits from multiple matings, concurrent multiple paternity is often explained by indirect genetic benefits to offspring. To examine such possibilities, we analyzed genetic paternity for 1,272 hatchlings, representing 227 clutches, from a nesting population of painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) on the Mississippi River. Goals were to quantify the incidence and distribution of concurrent multiple paternity across clutches, examine temporal patterns of sperm storage by females, and deduce the extent to which indirect benefits result from polyandrous female behaviors. Blood samples from adult males also allowed us to genetically identify the sires of surveyed clutches and to assess phenotypic variation associated with male fitness. From the genetic data, female and male reproductive success were deduced and then interpreted together with field data to evaluate possible effects of female mating behaviors and sire identity on offspring fitness. We document that more than 30% of the clutches were likely fathered by multiple males, and that presence of multiple paternity was positively correlated with clutch size. Furthermore, the data indicate that the second male to mate typically had high paternity precedence over the first.  相似文献

Avian incubation is often initiated before all eggs are laid. In altricial birds this has been proposed to facilitate brood reduction through asynchronous hatching. However, in precocial birds eggs normally hatch synchronously even if incubation has started before all eggs are laid. Patterns of incubation start may be the adaptive trait selected for both in altricial and precocial species. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the timing of incubation start in birds. Decreasing egg-size after incubation start may be adaptively related to an early incubation start, either to ensure synchronous hatching or to decrease fitness cost of late hatched eggs. We have measured individual body condition, egg size and start of incubation in common eider Somateria mollissima, a precocial sea-duck which does not feed during the incubation period. Females in poor body condition start to incubate earlier in the laying sequence than those in good body condition. Furthermore females in poor body condition lay smaller final eggs than females in good body condition. The laying of smaller eggs late in the sequence is therefore probably related to energetic or nutritional state. We propose that females in poor body condition start to incubate early to shorten the nest period in order to reduce their mass loss, but at the cost of reduced size and growth of the ducklings from the eggs laid after incubation start. Females in good body condition on the other hand postpone incubation start at the cost of a longer incubation period and a higher mass loss to the benefit of synchronized hatching and a higher survival of ducklings.  相似文献

The boreo-Mediterranean amphiurid Amphiura chiajei Forbes occurs in high numbers (700 individuals/m2) in Killary Harbour, a fjordic inlet on the west coast of Ireland. 99.1% of the adult individuals show signs of arm regeneration, while 0.5% show regeneration of the disc. A study of the phenomenon commenced in November 1987 and continued on a seasonal basis until July 1989. Specimens were collected by SCUBA. The overall mean length of regenerated arm tissue over the 21 mo sampling period was 33.5±6.5 mm. Regeneration points were most common in the proximal and in the distal one-third of each arm. An overall mean of 4.21±0.3 arms per individual showed evidence of regeneration, while biomass assays revealed that regenerated tissue accounted for up to 57.9% of the total body weight. Anthropogenic activity (e.g. bottom trawling) may contribute to regeneration, although sub-lethal predation appears to be the main causitive factor of regeneration. Gut analyses of potential predators at the sampling station revealed that fish species (especially the Pleuronectidae) are particularly implicated. This predation seems to vary seasonally, being greatest in the summer months. Since the larger individuals showed the greatest evidence of arm regeneration, it is assumed that such sub-lethal damage is a persistent experience. Whatever the causality, the population of A. chiajei in Killary Harbour is deemed to be highly resilient.  相似文献

Asymmetry in traits of sexual relevance may impair copulation behaviour and sexual performance of males, ultimately resulting in a fitness cost. Freshwater crayfish males use chelae, a sexually selected trait, to secure and position the female prior to and during mating. Thus, a relatively large chelae asymmetry, resulting from accidental loss and regeneration of one cheliped after autotomy, could have great consequences for male sexual behaviour. We studied copulatory behaviour and sperm expenditure of males paired to a mated female in Austropotamobius italicus, a freshwater crayfish species where both male and female mate multiply and where last-mating males are able to actively remove previously deposited sperm. We aimed at assessing whether male sperm removal and expenditure varied according to sperm allocated by first-mating males, and according to copulation behaviour and phenotypic traits (carapace length, chelae length and relative chelae asymmetry) of second-mating males. Second-mating males did not adjust their ejaculate size in relation to first-mating male ejaculate, nor to the first-mating male’s sperm removed. Moreover, the amount of sperm removed by second-mating males increased with increasing first-mating males ejaculate size, and first-mating male sperm remaining after removal did not correlate with the original first-mating male ejaculate size. Interestingly, the amount of sperm removed by second-mating males decreased with increasing relative chelae asymmetry, while increasing with male body size. However, second-mating (but not first-mating) asymmetric-clawed males produced larger ejaculates than symmetric-clawed ones. Importantly, the proportion of second-mating male sperm remaining after the two matings did not vary with relative chelae asymmetry nor with body size of second-mating males. Thus, small, asymmetric-clawed crayfish males appear to adopt sperm allocation tactics that allow them to fully compensate for their inferior sperm removal ability.  相似文献

This paper describes the catch composition in the rapido trawl fishery and the direct effects on non-target species. All data were collected on commercial fishing vessels so as to reflect commercial rapido-trawling practice. The effects on non-target species were measured using two different damage scales (three- and seven-level scales) depending on the morphology of the taxa. Damage assessment was performed taking into account the whole fishing process by collecting individuals that passed through the cod-end, individuals that were retained in the cod-end and dropped onto the deck and individuals that were collected at the end of the sorting operation just before their return to the sea. Due to differences in the habitat and spatial distribution of target species, discard/commercial ratio was very different among the three different target species fisheries: 1:6 in the queen scallop (Aequipecten opercularis) fishery, 2:1 in the flatfish (Solea spp., Platichthys flesus, Psetta maximus and Scophthalmus rhombus) fishery and 9:1 in the scallop (Pecten jacobaeus) fishery. Damage sustained by non-target species was species-specific and related to the morphology of different organisms. The sorting operation produced similar levels of injury to those of the gear itself: all discarded animals showed higher levels of damage after the sorting than before. Damage to animals that had passed through the cod-end followed the same pattern, and these data could give an estimate of the "unobserved mortality". Our observations indicated a higher impact on non-target species caused by the queen scallop fishery than that caused by the flatfish fishery. This could be due to the total amount of hard-shelled species (in the queen scallop fishery, A. opercularis accounted for 87% of the total catch biomass) in any given haul, since shells macerated the catch during towing. Discarded animals from the queen scallop fishery showed higher levels of damage than those collected in the flatfish fishery. The rapido trawl fishery seemed to exert a strong selective pressure on the macrobenthic community, being able to modify the epibenthic fauna structure which, in heavily exploited fishing grounds, was dominated by bivalves, gastropods, crabs, starfish and brittlestars.  相似文献

Abundance and life-cycle features of the mesopelagic hyperiid amphipod Primno abyssalis (formerly P. macropa) in the Oyashio region, western subarctic Pacific, were investigated using samples collected between July 1996 and July 1998. P. abyssalis was collected throughout the entire survey period, with abundance peaks occurring in spring to autumn. While all maturity stages of males and females were observed throughout the study period, the peak reproduction season was in summer. Instar analysis based on the segment number of the pleopod rami indicated that hatched juveniles molted 10 times before becoming adult males and 13 times before becoming adult females. Judging from the dry and ash-free dry weights of each instar, males and females continued to feed throughout the final instar stage. Based on cohort analysis of seasonal samples and laboratory observations on molting frequencies, growth in body length of P. abyssalis was linear with time, and estimated generation lengths were 2.3-3.8 years for females and 1.4-1.9 years for males. Brood size of females ranged from 66 to 337 and increased with increasing female body length. Lifetime fecundity, calculated as the sum of six successive broods, was 1,004. Compared with P. abyssalis in the southern Sea of Japan, those in the Oyashio region have a larger number of adult instars (six versus five for females, three 3 vs one for males), a lower growth rate (0.014 mm day-1 vs 0.021 mm day-1), and mature earlier (instar 13 vs instar 15 for females; instar 10 vs instar 11 for males). These characteristics are considered to be advantageous life-history traits to counteract higher niche competition within the mesopelagic community and higher predation pressure by mesopelagic fishes in the Oyashio region than in the Sea of Japan.  相似文献

In 1984, 115 samples of the starfish Asterias rubens L. collected in the south-eastern part of Cadet Trench (Mecklenburg Bay/Western Baltic Sea) were analyzed for their contents of a few major (calcium, magnesium) and trace elements (cadmium, copper, iron, mercury, manganese, nickel, lead, selenium and zinc). Distinct differences were found between starfish from different stations, and these are attributed to the composition of the sediments acting as a substrate for their prey (mussels, snails). Except for cadmium, the concentrations of the elements studied all correlated negatively with the diameter and weight of the starfish.

Parallel analyses of starfish arms and the central discs of the same animals showed that iron, zinc, copper and mercury levels were 16 to 30% higher, and selenium, manganese, magnesium, calcium and lead were 4 to 9% higher in the arms. Cadmium concentrations were 20% higher in the central discs than in the arms.

Stock estimations (about 52,000 tons fresh weight) show that starfish play a significant role in the benthic ecosystem of the western Baltic Sea. They can consume up to 200,000 tons of mussels and clams (Mytilus edulis, Macoma baltica) a year and may therefore represent a notable factor in the trace metal balance of the region.  相似文献

This study examined the occurrence and effects of inbreeding in the sessile, colonial hermaphrodite Celleporella hyalina. The results are discussed with regard to theoretical explanations for the prevalence of hermaphroditism in sessile clonal organisms. C. hyalina exhibited inbreeding depression at all stages, including the pre-zygotic. Outcrossing, sib and half-sib matings produced offspring but selfing did not. There was inbreeding depression in embryo production and survival. Inbred colonies showed slower growth and later maturation, with fewer reproductive zooids. The relative numbers of male and female zooids were affected by inbreeding; increased production of males is a sign of stress in C. hyalina. When mated with an outbred non-relative, inbred colonies had lower success both as males and as females in embryo production and offspring survivorship. The low survivorship of embryos fathered by inbred colonies is a clear effect of inbreeding on the F2 generation. These results indicate that C. hyalina is unlikely to inbreed in the wild, supporting the "space-limited" model of hermaphroditism for this species. This study indicates that hermaphroditism, by avoiding much of the cost of sex, can confer optimal reproductive fitness for sessile brooding animals in a space-limited habitat even in the absence of inbreeding.  相似文献

Sexual selection and species recognition play important roles in mate choice; however, sexual selection preferences may overlap with traits found in heterospecifics, producing a conflict between sexual selection and species recognition. We examined female preferences in Xiphophorus pygmaeus for male traits that could provide both types of information to determine how females use multiple cues when preferences for these cues would conflict. We also examined X. pygmaeus behavior in the field to determine if females have the opportunity to choose mates. As no male-male competition was observed in the field, and females occasionally chased males from feeding areas, females apparently have the opportunity to exercise mate choice in their natural habitat. In the laboratory, female X. pygmaeus used body size as a sexual selection cue, preferring large heterospecifics (X. cortezi) to small conspecifics. Females also preferred barless X. cortezi over barred X. cortezi when males were size matched. Because X. pygmaeus males do not have bars, this preference suggests that X. pygmaeus females use vertical bars in species recognition, and that large body size and vertical bars are conflicting cues. However, X. pygmaeus females did not have a preference for males of either species when sexual selection and species recognition cues were presented concurrently. This result was surprising, because preferences for species recognition cues are often assumed to be stronger than sexual selection cues. We suggest that females may be using additional species-specific cues in mate choice to prevent hybridization.  相似文献
