The distinctive larval stage of eels (leptocephalus) facilitates dispersal through prolonged life in the open ocean. Leptocephali are abundant and diverse off North Carolina, yet data on distributions and biology are lacking. The water column (from surface to 1,293 m) was sampled in or near the Gulf Stream off Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout, and Cape Fear, North Carolina during summer through fall of 1999–2005, and leptocephali were collected by neuston net, plankton net, Tucker trawl, and dip net. Additional samples were collected nearly monthly from a transect across southern Onslow Bay, North Carolina (from surface to 91 m) from April 2000 to December 2001 by bongo and neuston nets, Methot frame trawl, and Tucker trawl. Overall, 584 tows were completed, and 224 of these yielded larval eels. The 1,295 eel leptocephali collected (combining all methods and areas) represented at least 63 species (nine families). Thirteen species were not known previously from the area. Dominant families for all areas were Congridae (44% of individuals, 11 species), Ophichthidae (30% of individuals, 27 species), and Muraenidae (22% of individuals, ten species). Nine taxa accounted for 70% of the overall leptocephalus catches (in order of decreasing abundance): Paraconger caudilimbatus (Poey), Gymnothorax ocellatus Agassiz complex, Ariosoma balearicum (Delaroche), Ophichthus gomesii (Castelnau), Callechelys muraena Jordan and Evermann, Letharchus aliculatus McCosker, Rhynchoconger flavus (Goode and Bean), Ophichthus cruentifer (Goode and Bean), Rhynchoconger gracilior (Ginsburg). The top three species represented 52% of the total eel larvae collected. Most leptocephali were collected at night (79%) and at depths > 45 m. Eighty percent of the eels collected in discrete depth Tucker trawls at night ranged from mean depths of 59–353 m. A substantial number (38% of discrete depth sample total) of larval eels were also collected at the surface (neuston net) at night. Daytime leptocephalus distributions were less clear partly due to low catches and lower Tucker trawl sampling effort. While net avoidance may account for some of the low daytime catches, an alternative explanation is that many species of larval eels occur during the day at depths > 350 m. Larvae of 21 taxa of typically shallow water eels were collected at depths > 350 m, but additional discrete depth diel sampling is needed to resolve leptocephalus vertical distributions. The North Carolina adult eel fauna (estuary to at least 2,000 m) consists of 51 species, 41% of which were represented in these collections. Many species of leptocephali collected are not yet known to have juveniles or adults established in the South Atlantic Bight or north of Cape Hatteras. Despite Gulf Stream transport and a prolonged larval stage, many of these eel leptocephali may not contribute to their respective populations.  相似文献

Benthopelagic plankton was collected 10 to 100 m above the bottom of the deep sea (1100 to 3200 m) with an opening-closing net. Five samples were taken from the San Diego Trough, 2 from the eastern tropical Pacific and 2 from the northeast Atlantic. Roughly 80% of the individual organisms collected were copepods; the next most abundant groups were usually isopods, ostracods, and chaetognaths. Within the depth range studied, absolute abundances of most animal groups decreased with depth, but relative abundances (%) did not change. Of over 100 species of adult gymnopleid copepods collected, a few species were abundant, but most were rare. Copepod exoskeletons were more abundant than living copepods. For the gymnopleids, similarities among the 3 geographical regions were strong at the family and genus level but weak at the species level. Species that were widely distributed horizontally tended to occupy different positions (in terms of rank order of abundance) in each community. Gut content analysis indicated that the most abundant gymnopleids were generalized particle feeders. However, size-frequency distributions provided indirect evidence for niche separation. The deep-sea benthopelagic plankton was divisible into a truly planktonic component and a bottom-associated component. Abundances of some copepods changed relative to distance off the bottom. Several copepods and other animals, previously described as epibenthic or bottom-associated, were collected more that 10 m above the bottom and thus appeared to move freely between the bottom and lower water column.  相似文献

Seventy-five species of pteropods (20 species), euphausiids (26 spcies), and chaelognaths (29 species) occur in the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea. All but one of these species are present in the South China Sea, while only 17 species (7 pteropods, 1 euphausiid, and 9 chaetognaths) are consistently present in the Gulf of Thailand. Abundances of South China Sea species have significant positive rank correlations with depth of water, salinity, and dissolved oxygen and negative correlations with temperature. These species are most abundant in the northern, oceanic, two-thirds of the South China Sea and many of them are vertical migrators or live at depth. Species in the Gulf of Thailand may be divided into two subgroups based on their tolerance for the semi-estuarine environment. Species in the most tolerant subgroup are more abundant within the Gulf of Thailand than in the South China Sea and have significant negative rank correlations with depth of water, salinity, and dissolved oxygen and positive correlations with temperature. The shallow, low-salinity environment of the Gulf is not as favorable for the species of the second sub-group. Rank correlations with depth of water, salinity, temperature, and oxygen are the same in sign but lower in value than for the South China Sea species, and maxisium abundances occur in the 50 to 200 m water depths of the southern third of the South China Sea. Species inhabiting the Gulf of Thailand are mostly non-migrators which are epipelagic even in the open ocean. The proportion of tolerant species diffiers among the major taxonomic groups, reflecting differing adaptive strategies.  相似文献

Few data are available on the movements and behavior of immature Atlantic loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from their seasonal neritic foraging grounds within the western north Atlantic. These waters provide developmental habitat for loggerheads originating from several western Atlantic nesting stocks. We examined the long-term movements of 23 immature loggerheads (16 wild-caught and seven headstart turtles) characterizing their seasonal distribution, habitat use, site fidelity, and the oceanographic conditions encountered during their migrations. We identified two movement strategies: (1) a seasonal shelf-constrained north–south migratory pattern; and (2) a year-round oceanic dispersal strategy where turtles travel in the Gulf Stream to the North Atlantic and their northern dispersal is limited by the 10–15°C isotherm. When sea surface temperatures dropped below 20°C, neritic turtles began a migration south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (USA) where they established fidelity to the waters between North Carolina’s Outer Banks and the western edge of the Gulf Stream along outer continental shelf. Two turtles traveled as far south as Florida. Several turtles returned to their seasonal foraging grounds during subsequent summers. Northern movements were associated with both increased sea surface temperature (>21°C) and increased primary productivity. Our results indicate strong seasonal and interannual philopatry to the waters of Virginia (summer foraging habitat) and North Carolina (winter habitat). We suggest that the waters of Virginia and North Carolina provide important seasonal habitat and serve as a seasonal migratory pathway for immature loggerhead sea turtles. North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras acts as a seasonal “migratory bottleneck” for this species; special management consideration should be given to this region. Six turtles spent time farther from the continental shelf. Three entered the Gulf Stream near Cape Hatteras, traveling in the current to the northwest Atlantic. Two of these turtles remained within an oceanic habitat from 1 to 3 years and were associated with mesoscale features and frontal systems. The ability of large benthic subadults to resume an oceanic lifestyle for extended periods indicates plasticity in habitat use and migratory strategies. Therefore, traditional life history models for loggerhead sea turtles should be reevaluated.  相似文献

Currently available information on the distribution of species of the opisthobranch orders Cephalaspidea, Nudibranchia and Sacoglossa (Mollusca: Gastropoda) in the northwest Atlantic Ocean is presented. Except for Sacoglossa, the fauna is markedly amphiatlantic, but the temperate West Atlantic component increases southward and dominates south of New Jersey. Species' diversity of nudibranchs and cephalaspids on the continental shelf decreases between northern New England and Cape Hatteras in association with a southward decline in the proportion of amphiatlantic species. This is not evident for the cephalaspids of the continental slope, a higher percentage of which are amphiatlantic. The entire fauna is subdivided into 5 groups: arctic, boreo-subarctic, boreal, West Atlantic temperate, and West Atlantic tropical. The latter does not extend north of Cape Hatteras, but the remaining groups broadly overlap in the northwest Atlantic. The southward limits of amphiatlantic species are presented and related to sea surface temperatures. The thermal characteristics of a critical zone between Cape Cod and Connecticut are discussed, and a maximum temperature of 15 °C is suggested for successful reproduction of the boreo-subarctic component, and 25 °C for the boreal component. The distribution of boreal species on both sides of the North Atlantic is discussed, and a suggestion is made that the southward speread of these species in North America is limited by extreme summer warming south of New Jersey, despite favorable winter temperatures, which extend much farther south.Contribution No. 66 of the Marine Research Laboratory, University of Connecticut, USA.  相似文献

Bottom and near-bottom decapod shrimp communities from two northeast Atlantic abyssal sites (ca. 4 040 and 5 440m) were examined in 1984 and 1985. In both cases, an increase in abundance was observed in the bottom 90 m of the water column, with the largest numbers of shrimps occurring closest to the sediment surface (10 to 25 m off the bottom). The benthopelagic communities were composed of species drawn from both pelagic and benthic habitats rather than being specific and discrete. Hymenodora glacialis was the dominant species at the shallower site but it was absent from the near-bottom samples at the deeper one. H. acanthitelsonis, however, occurred at both sites. Several new depth records have been established, and there are two recordings of species previously unknown to the eastern Atlantic basin. Vertical migration and differences in modes of reproduction are discussed.  相似文献

Deep-water assemblages of suprabenthic peracarids were analyzed in the SW Balearic Islands (Algerian Basin, southwestern Mediterranean) between 249 and 1,622 m depth; the patterns of species composition, possible zonation, and trophic structure found in this area were compared with those exhibited by peracarids in the mainland side of the Catalan Sea slope (northwestern Mediterranean). One hundred and four peracarid species (plus one leptostracan) were identified on the Balearic Islands slope, amphipods being the most diversified taxon (45 species). On the Balearic slope, two distinct depth assemblages were distinguished: one at the upper slope (US), between 249 and 402 m depth and the second at the deep slope, between 543 and 1,620 m depth. A remarkable species substitution occurred at depths between 402 and 638 m. In the Catalan Sea, in addition to the US assemblage occupying depths between 208 and 408 m, a second boundary of faunal change was found around 1,250 m. Suprabenthos biomass increased from 242 to approximately 500 m. Suprabenthos attained the highest biomass values (100 g wet weight/10,000 m2) at intermediate depths between 504 and 1,211 m, as also occurred with the associated zooplankton collected with suprabenthos (peak biomass between 502 m and 898 m). Suprabenthos biomass did not show any significant correlation with any environmental water-column variable. In contrast, zooplankton (especially small fish and decapod crustaceans) showed a significant positive correlation with fluorometry and turbidity at different levels of the water column. The feeding guilds of species showed important differences between the two areas only on the US, with a higher abundance of deposit feeders in the Catalan Sea (20.4%) than in the Balearic Islands (4.2%). The low contribution of deposit feeders in the SW Balearic Islands may ultimately be a consequence of the lack of river discharges in this area.Communicated by S.A. Poulet, Roscoff  相似文献

Published and unpublished records of euphausiid distributions around southern Africa are examined for zoogeographic pattern and the results compared with patterns generated from intertidal data sets. Two basic groups of euphausiids are discerned from cluster analysis, corresponding to neritic and oceanic assemblages. Superimposed upon these are Indian Ocean (Agulhas Current) and Atlantic Ocean (Benguela Current) groups. Patterns of diversity and zoogeography generally conform to the large-scale hydrological features in the area. Diversity is higher in the oceanic than in neritic regions. Maximum diversity is recorded off Cape Point, where Indian, Atlantic and southern Ocean waters interact. Diversity is otherwise higher along the east coast, and particularly low in the nearshore waters of the Benguela Current. While particular species of euphausiids can be associated with Agulhas Current and Angola Current waters, westcoast communities lack any distinctive species, and this is discussed. Although the patterns of zoogeography observed for euphausiids are generally similar to those observed for rocky shore communities, there are clear differences between them that reflect their respective habitats and the influence that large-scale water movement has on each.  相似文献

The larval fish assemblage in the epipelagic zone of the North Pacific central gyre near Lat. 28°N, Long. 155°W during late summer was sampled with stratified opening/closing bongo nets. This assemblage exhibited recurring patterns of spatial and species distributions. Spatial patterns included species vertical distributions, co-occurrence and pathchiness; species patterns included species composition and abundance relations. Both types of patterns changed with depth, the most dramatic change occurring in relation to the bottom of the summer mixed layer. An examination of the physical and biological environments of the epipelagic zone with relation to the summertime species and spatial patterns and to seasonal changes in larval fish species structure indicates that the thermal structure of the upper water column may exert a major influence on overall ichtyoplanton species and spatial structures within the gyre.  相似文献

Pop-up satellite archival tags were deployed onto four wahoo during 2006 in the western North Atlantic (~26.5°N, 79.3°W), providing movement, depth, and temperature data collected over a total of 198?days. Straight-line distances between tag deployment and pop-off positions ranged from 162.5 to 1,960.0?km. Wahoo spent >90?% of their time in water <200?m, and >90?% of their time in water between 17.5 and 27.5?°C. Three fish made regular trips to depths >200?m. The genetic population structure of the highly migratory albacore (Thunnus alalunga) was investigated using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of the mitochondrial ATPase gene amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). 620 individuals comprising 13 geographically distant samples (ten Pacific, two Atlantic and the Cape of Good Hope) were surveyed between 1991 and 1994 with two restriction endonucleases (Mse I and Rsa I), resulting in seven haplotypes. No heterogeneity was observed in the distribution of haplotypes among the ten samples from the North and South Pacific, nor among the samples from North and South Atlantic and Cape of Good Hope. However, highly significant heterogeneity was evident among Atlantic and Pacific samples. Higher haplotypic diversity (h) was observed in the Pacific samples (0.59 to 0.69) than in the Atlantic and Cape samples (0.22 to 0.43). These results suggest greater gene flow between albacore of the northern and southern hemispheres (within oceans) than between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.  相似文献

Summary Humpback whale songs recorded on tropical calving grounds exhibit different dialects depending on the oceanic basin. Songs sampled simultaneously from two populations in the North Pacific (Hawaii and Mexico) were essentially identical. These North Pacific songs were clearly different from the song type shared by two populations in the North Atlantic (Cape Verde Islands and West Indies). Songs from the Southern Hemisphere (Tonga) represent a third distinct dialect. Our evidence shows that, despite annual change in song organization, significant differences in humpback song occur between isolated ocean basins, while only subtle differences exist within an oceanic population (Hawaii and Pacific Mexico).  相似文献

Large Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) off the eastern coast of Canada were tagged with pop-up satellite archival transmission tags (N = 17) to track movements, determine ambient depth and temperature, and infer spawning activity. Many halibut showed seasonal movements from deepwater slope areas in fall and winter to shallower feeding grounds on the Scotian Shelf and Grand Banks in summer. Halibut depths ranged between 0 and 1,640 m. Mean temperature of occupation was 4.7 °C. Multiple short-term vertical ascents from a consistent baseline depth, characterized as spawning rises, were identified in seven of the tagged halibut south of the Grand Banks. All presumed spawning rises occurred in multiples of 2–6 events at 2- to 9-day intervals between October and January, spanning an average vertical extent of 50–100 m at depths of about 800–1,000 m. Given the direction and velocity of the slope water currents and the duration of the pelagic stage, the calculated 300–500 km drift of the eggs and larvae would take them onto the Scotian Shelf, as well as into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Therefore, the location of the presumed spawning grounds is consistent with expectations based on migration compensation theory, the northeasterly migratory patterns of the juveniles, the relatively static distribution of the adults off southern Newfoundland, and the prevailing currents at depth.  相似文献

The distribution of three important dissolved forms of nitrogen, viz. nitrate, nitrite and urea in the surface and bottom water samples collected from 27 selected hydrographic profiles, in the Arabian Sea, along the west coast of India is described. Of the three forms, nitrate concentrations were the highest and comparatively higher concentrations were observed in the bottom water. Decomposition of organic matter resulting in the release of the thermodynamically stable nitrogen species, i.e. nitrate, may be the major factor resulting in higher nitrate concentrations at these depths, where the water is also characterized by low values of dissolved oxygen and temperature. The significant positive correlation between A.O.U. and nitrate of the bottom water samples emphasizes the role of oxidative decomposition of organic matter which plays an active role in reducing the oxygen concentrations below the theoretical values since at this depth ( , 200 m) the net production is taken to be zero. This is also evidenced by the negative correlation of nitrate with dissolved oxygen and temperature, for the bottom samples.  相似文献

Both the vertical and horizontal distributions ofEurydice pulchra (Leach) within the water column of the surf zone were recorded throughout complete tidal cycles on a sandy beach in North Wales during the summer of 1989. Upon emerging from the sand, the isopods tended to swim up in the water column, where transport onshore would be facilitated by the wave-induced, onshore currents which laboratory wave-tank experiments have confirmed to occur near the water surface. This combination of active and passive transport to the water's edge results in high numbers of individuals in the narrow swash zone. At and just after the time of high tide, individuals swim to the water/sediment interface where, as again confirmed by wave-tank experiments, the predominant water movement is offshore. Continued swimming near the bottom during the ebb tide before reburrowing in the sand ensures transport downshore and avoidance of stranding above the characteristic level of zonation on the shore. Vertical migrations ofE. pulchra in the water column permit differential exploitation of up and downshore currents to achieve horizontal migration.  相似文献

The daytime vertical distribution of several species of crustaceans, gelatinous zooplankton, and fish were monitored in situ simultaneously with measurements of downwelling irradiance in Oceanographer Canyon in July 1999. During this submersible-based research cruise, an influx of turbid water significantly decreased downwelling irradiance and had a substantial impact on the depth distributions of a number of organisms. Several species of crustaceans, (Thysanoessa gregaria and Sergestes arcticus) and gelatinous zooplankton (Salpa aspera and Salpa fusiformis) ascended over 100 m in the water column during the influx and returned to their pre-influx depths once the influx had ceased. In situ light measurements demonstrated that each of these species was associated with the same irradiance levels during the influx as they were under pre- and post-influx conditions. By contrast, a statistically significant change in temperature, salinity, and oxygen concentrations measured post-influx had no apparent impact on the depth distributions. These results indicate that these species were adjusting their depth distributions to remain within a range of preferred irradiances. The spatial distribution of the most abundant eggs and larvae of teleost fish species on the continental shelf and slope off the northern Benguela region was studied in April 1986. The horizontal and vertical distribution of eggs and larvae were analysed together with environmental data, in order to determine patterns of ichthyoplankton distribution. Both species composition and relative egg and larval abundance levels exhibited important latitudinal differences during a period of quiescent upwelling with an intense intrusion of Angolan water into the system. Larval diversity was higher in the northern part of the study area, where, because of the intrusion of the warmer Angolan water, the water column was more stratified than in the southern part, where the affect of upwelling of South Atlantic Central Water was continuous and only a few species spawned. The frontal zone appeared to be a nursery ground for the most important pelagic species of the region:Trachurus trachurus capensis, Engraulis capensis, andSardinops ocellatus. Vertical egg and larval distributions showed evidence of stratification, with highest concentrations located in the uppermost 50 m. In comparison, during periods of intense upwelling, longitudinal gradients were responsible for the horizontal distribution of ichthyoplankton, and the vertical distribution of eggs and larvae were much more extensive because of the greater mixing of the water column.  相似文献

Between March 23 and April 4, 1981, samples were taken in the eastern tropical Pacific. The day/night vertical distribution of euphausiid species and biomass are described and contrasted in detail on two eastern tropical Pacific stations, the DOME station, in a region of continuous upwelling and the BIOSTAT station, in a nonupwelling area. The effects of various biological parameters, such as temperature, salinity and oxygen concentrations on the distributions of the species are examined. The numbers of euphausiids m-2 on both stations were highest during the day, indicating that avoidance of the sampler was not a problem. During the day the largest concentration of adult euphausiids was between 300 and 350 m whereas the juveniles were concentrated between 170 and 80 m on both stations. Very few individuals were found within the oxygen minimum layer, but low concentrations of some species were found below the oxygen minimum down to 1 000 m. At night the euphausiid concentration migrated upward into the mixed layer (20 to 30 m) at BIOSTAT and to the base of the mixed layer at the DOME. Significant differences in the night depths of the species were found on both stations. The oxygen minimum layer appeared to act as a barrier to the vertical distribution of all species. Only two species were found in water with an oxygen concentration of <0.1 ml O2 l-1. Twentyone species of euphausiids were found on the two stations but the adult population was dominated by only two or three species on both stations. The reproductive state of the species suggested that some species reproduced earlier on the DOME than on BIOSTAT. Analysis of the depth distribution by cluster analysis showed that the most abundant species occupied different depths during the night and day at BIOSTAT but the two most abundant species were concentrated at the same depth at the DOME station although portions of each species population occupied different pelagic zones.  相似文献
