Populations of over 100 colonies of Capnella gaboensis Verseveldt, 1977 at each of four study sites in Sydney Harbour were monitored for recruitment, survival, and mortality from October 1982 to November 1984. Larval settlement and survival were observed in the laboratory. Successful in situ larval settlement of C. gaboensis was estimated to be in the order of 0.26%. The predominant mode of recruitment was from larvae. Asexual recruitment resulted only from the fission of large colonies, and not by fragmentation or by stolon development. Mortality of newly settled C. gaboensis in situ during their first year was estimated to be around 99.75%. For colonies more than 1 yr old, mortality was highest amongst juveniles. After colonies reach about 3 yr of age, they have a high expectation of further life, until they reach about 15 yr of age; life expectancy declines each year thereafter. These estimates of life expectancy are based upon the conservative assumption that the largest colonies are about 20 yr old. The likely causes of mortality for colonies in the field are: predation by urchins, ovulids and nudibranchs; abrasion by kelp; and overgrowth by algae and sponges. The causes of mortality for larvae and recruits in the field, however, can be predicted only on the basis of laboratory studies and observations of field conditions.  相似文献

Rangia cuneata were collected every six weeks for one year from February 1984 to January 1985 at the mouth of the Dog River, Alabama, USA and dosed with 200 ppb [9–14C] anthracene at 10, 20, and 30°C. Uptake rates of [9–14C] anthracene measured over a 15-h period were not significantly different (P>0.05), but depuration rates measured over a two-week period were significantly higher with increasing temperature. The seasonal changes in rates were related to the annual changes in biochemical composition of the clams associated with the reproductive cycle. Lipid levels were nearly constant over the year, averaging 88.0±2.0 mg/g dry wt. The level of carbohydrates peaked in July, a month before the maximal gonad index, and decreased steadily through September during spawning. The level of proteins increased from 76.6 mg/g dry wt prior to spawning to 138.3 mg/g dry wt after spawning. Uptake rates were highest in late summer during the peak of gametogenesis and decreased during spawning in the fall. Depuration rates remained low from March through August and rapidly increased to the highest levels during the fall spawning period. The results suggest that the stage of the reproductive cycle, with its associated biochemical changes, and temperature play an important role in the pattern of accumulation and release of anthracene in R. cuneata.  相似文献

Reproduction in the widely distributed tropical sea urchin Echinometra mathaei (de Blainville) was examined in three Kenyan reef lagoons that differed in substrate cover and E. mathaei population density. Histological examination of the gonads and gonad index measurements for 3 years showed a seasonal reproductive cycle with gametogenesis commencing in July, when temperature and light are at their lowest, and spawning commencing in December and peaking in February to May, when temperature and light reach their annual maxima. Monthly gonad indices correlated significantly with seawater temperature and light intensity. Male urchins had mature gametes for a longer period (8 months) than females (6 months), possibly an adaptive strategy that increases the probability of fertilization. Lunar periodicity was not observed, as male and female gonads were full of gametes on all days of the lunar cycle during the period of spawning. The peak in spawning activity coincides with the peak in phytoplankton abundance, which could ensure high food availability for the planktonic larvae. Gonad weights were significantly higher relative to urchin weight at the reef having the largest mean sizes and lowest population of urchins, indicating availability of food resources for growth and reproduction. E. mathaei at the reef with the highest density had the smallest urchins and high relative gonad sizes, indicative of a tradeoff between growth and reproduction when food is limited.Communicated by O. A field study was conducted at Wanlitung, southern Taiwan, in 1986–1089, to determine the reproductive cycle, development mode, growth rate and population dynamics of the small seastar Patiriella pseudoexigua (Dartnall), which occurs in highly stressful and disturbed intertidal pools in this area. An inverse relationship between gonad index and pyloric-caccum index was only recorded immediately prior to spawning. A short, well-synchronized seasonal spawning occurs in October. When reared at 25 °C, lecithotrophic larvae develop directly, lack a bipinnaria stage, and metamorphose completely on the seventh day after fertilization. The growth curves of field juveniles are linear, those of laboratory-reared juveniles are sigmoid. Juveniles appear in tide pools in spring-early summer of each year. Adults spawn mainly in late fall, enabling spawning to occur in time for the larvae to benefit from the environmentally favorable winter season. Populations in high-tidal pools decrease in later summer, but remain more stable in lowtidal pools and lagoons.  相似文献

Effects of ambient ultraviolet light on the survivorship of eggs and planulae larvae was investigated for three species of broadcast-spawning reef corals, Acropora palmata, Montastraea annularis, and M. franksi. Eggs and larvae from these corals contain high concentrations of lipids (60–70% by weight) and float in surface waters for 3–4 days following spawning. Larvae originating from colonies living at deeper sites on the reef exhibited significantly lower survivorship than conspecifics originating from parents in shallow water when experimentally exposed for up to 4 days to ambient surface levels of ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Concentrations of the UVR-protective compounds correlated positively with survival and matched concentrations found in parent colonies, implying that higher concentrations of ultraviolet B protective compounds are responsible for greater survival of eggs and larvae from shallow compared to deeper-dwelling parents. Ultraviolet B appears to be responsible for most of the observed differences in larval survivorship with ultraviolet A playing a minor or insignificant role. Data presented here indicate that coral recruits on Caribbean reefs and elsewhere may originate primarily from adult colonies dwelling in shallow water.Communicated by P.W. Dissogony was observed in normal and experimentally manipulated individuals of Mnemiopsis mccradyi in February–April, 1985. The normal oral-aboral length at which sexual reproduction begins in M. mccradyi is 30±5 mm; however, some larvae, of 1.5 to 2.8 mm (oralaboral length), produce viable gametes. During the present study, not all individuals from a particular spawning which were kept in the same conditions became reproductive at an early age. The age at which larval reproduction began varied between individuals. The length of time over which individuals spawned varied considerably — some spawned only once, while others spawned repeatedly. Only the gonads located under the adesophageal ctene rows (and not those associated with the adtentacular rows) produced gametes during the early reproductive period. After larvae stopped spawning, the gonads regressed and the larvae grew to large lobate stages. Individuals which became sexually reproductive as larvae also became sexually reproductive during lobate stages.  相似文献

The dendrochirote holothurian Aslia lefevrei (Barrois) is locally and densely aggregated (>70 individuals m-2) in Galway Bay, on the west coast of Ireland. It has a discrete, relatively short breeding period from the end of February to the beginning of April, with peak activity in March. The sexes are separate and the single gonad, consisting of numerous tubules (100 to 800), lies in the anterior coelom. Both gonad index values and histological observations indicate that gametogenesis resumes in June/July after a brief post-spawned resting period. Little oocyte growth and sperm production occurs over the warm summer months when the holothurian is actively feeding. Gonad index values, however, increase rapidly during this period and reach high values by early winter without concomitant increases in maturity indices. This is subsequently followed by slight reductions in the gonad indices, before reaching peak values in February. It is suggested that this is probably due to the initial build-up and subsequent assimilation of storage products in the gonad, the development of gametogenic products and the frequent assimilation thereafter of unwanted ova. Spawning generally takes between 5 and 60 min, with the entire contents of the gonad rarely being shed in a single release. During this process, the holothurian raises its anterior end and, with the extended tentacles close together, emits a stream of gametes from the genital pore in the mid-dorsal line. Laboratory experiments and general observations indicate that increased temperature and low light levels may influence spawning behaviour.Contribution No. 248 to the School of Marine Sciences, University College Galway, Ireland  相似文献

Multispecies assemblages of the coral genus Acropora occur commonly throughout the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Nine species from such an assemblage comprising 41 species of Acropora, at Big Broadhurst Reef on the Great Barrier Reef, were studied during 1981–1983. Similarities and differences in reproductive modes and timing, oocyte dimensions and fecundity, recruitment by larvae and by fragments, and mortality were recorded. All species had an annual gametogenic cycle, were simultaneous hermaphrodites, and had the same arrangement of gonads in polyps. In six species, most colonies released gametes on the same night of the year, in early summer, during a mass spawning event involving many coral genera. A seventh species had colonies spawning at this as well as other times of the year. Another species spawned in late summer, and gametes were not observed to mature in the last species. Eggs were very large (601 to 728 m geometric mean diameter) and fecundity of polyps low, compared with other corals; no reduction in oocyte numbers occurred during oogenesis. Reef-flat species had slightly bigger and fewer eggs than reef-slope species. All species recruited by larvae, but four also multiplied by fragmentation, either year-round or during occasional rough weather. Yearround fragmenters had few larval recruits; non-fragmenters had many, and a rough-weather fragmenter had an intermediate number of larval recruits. It was concluded that larval recruitment largely determined species composition, and that reduced larval recruitment was responsible for sparse distribution of fragmenting species. Subsequent mortality in some species and increase by fragmentation in others probably determined relative abundances.  相似文献

Ophidiaster granifer Lütken is a small cryptic coral reef asteroid found in the Indo-West Pacific. Its mode of reproduction, shown by aquarium observations and gonad histology, is parthenogenetic. This is the first confirmation of natural parthenogenesis in the phylum Echinodermata, despite many studies showing artificial parthenogenesis in echinoderms. Populations of O. granifer from Micronesia, New Guinea and the Great Barrier Reef consisted only of females: no testes or spermatogenesis were found in any individual at any stage of gonad development of ca 400 individuals. Regular year-round population censuses at Guam, Micronesia, revealed a distinct 0-year class which grew to sexual maturity in two years. There was an annual reproductive cycle with apparently-synchronous spawning in early winter. The large eggs, ca 0.6 mm diameter, develop into lecithotrophic larvae. Some larvae are planktonic, while some remain attached under the rocks. The latter develop through metamorphosis in situ. Parthenogenetic reproduction leading to both stationary and dispersed larvae may be related to the low fecundity and low population densities of this small asteroid.  相似文献

Over a 3-year period (1996-1998), reproduction of the commercial sea cucumber Holothuria scabra (Jaeger, 1833) was investigated in the Solomon Islands to determine the spawning pattern and whether gametogenesis is continuous or seasonal. The gonad consisted of a single cohort of tubules that developed uniformly. Macroscopic examination of the gonads revealed that mature gametes were present throughout the year. Individuals with gonads at different stages of maturity were present in most samples. Partly spawned gonads were prevalent in females, whereas mature gonads were prevalent in males. The time at which the peak gonad index was recorded differed among years. Although gametogenesis was continuous, with a potential for prolonged gamete release, a period of enhanced spawning occurred during the dry season, from September to December. Maximum gonad indices were reached prior to and during this period of enhanced spawning. Histology revealed that gametogenesis reinitiated in partly spawned gonads, resulting in the presence of gametes at different stages of development in the gonad. The uniform growth of gonad tubules indicated that H. scabra does not conform to the progressive tubule recruitment model described for holothurian oogenesis. Continuous reproduction in H. scabra and prolonged availability of mature gametes would facilitate use of this species for aquaculture.  相似文献

Stereological methods applied to reproductive cycle of Tapes rhomboides   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A population of Tapes rhomboides (Pennant) in the Bay of St. Malo, France, was studied for one and a half years (July 1984–October 1985) to determine spawning frequency and fecundity under natural conditions, using the techniques of qualitative histological staging, condition index calculation and quantitative stereology. Spawning took place twice a year, in late May and in July/September. There was an extended winter resting period. Gonad development and oocyte production were positively correlated with female body size. The annual fecundity in a 40 mm clam was about 5x105. Stereological techniques provided accurate information on oocyte dynamics within a gonad and the relationship with atretic processes. Each oocyte generation from the onset of the cycle to the winter resting stage was spawned eventually if conditions were suitable, or the oocytes were resorbed. Atresia of oocytes was seen throughout the reproductive period, but especially after the spring spawning and at the end of the summer.  相似文献

The reproductive activity of 88 colonies of Pocillopora damicornis at Rottnest Island, Western Australia, was examined over 12 mo (20 August 1988 to 20 August 1989). Larvae were found close to the three new moons of February, March and April, 1989, but in large numbers only during March; 67% of all corals produced larvae. There was no obvious connection between gametogenesis and the production of brooded larvae; however, those corals which did not produce, larvae also did not produce ova but did produce, sperm, and must be considered male colonies. All colonies which produced ova went on to produce planulae. Spermatogenesis occurred throughout the year, but oogenesis occurred between September 1988 and April 1989. Dramatic declines in the percentage of polyps containing eggs and sperm occurred in early February and early April 1989. On these dates the amount of lipid in the tissue of the corals decreased, which suggests that the decline in the percentage of polyps with sperm and eggs was not due to the gametes being resorbed by the polyps. Therefore, P. damicornis at Rottnest Island appears to be both a brooder and a broadcaster with asexual reproduction through brooded larvae and sexual reproduction through spawning of gametes. This accounts for earlier evidence in the literature that some input from sexual reproduction had been occurring in the populations of P. damicornis at Rottnest Island. There is no direct evidence for spawning, as broadcasting of gametes has not been observed, but the indirect evidence provides a strong argument for the existence of this dual reproduction.  相似文献

The sympatric echinoids Diadema savignyi and D. setosum coexist in shallow reef lagoons throughout East Africa. The reproductive strategies of these echinoids were studied to investigate reproductive isolation as a possible mechanism for maintaining the coexistence of these closely related species. The annual reproductive cycle and lunar periodicity were determined by gonad index measurements, histological examination of gametogenesis, and induction of spawning with injections of KCl. The peak reproductive period of D. savignyi coincided with the north-east monsoon period (when light and temperatures are high) as gonad indices were high (>8%) beginning in February and peaked at 9.7% in May. Gonad indices subsequently rapidly decreased (by 26%) in June at the beginning of the cooler south-east monsoon period. However, the presence of sperm and ova in most months of the year indicates continuous gametogenesis with reduced reproductive effort during the cooler months. The annual cycle for D. setosum showed less of a seasonal trend as gonad indices remained above 7% throughout much of the year but tended to be highest when temperatures were lower. This is the first confirmation of continuous reproduction in these two species at the equator. The reproductive patterns of both species remained consistent over 2 years of sampling. Both species exhibited a synchronized lunar spawning periodicity during the 3 months sampled, with D. setosum spawning on lunar days 8–10 and D. savignyi spawning after the full moon (lunar days 17–18). Whereas spawning in D. savignyi was very tightly synchronized, 20% of D. setosum individuals still spawned after the peak spawning period. The coexistence of these closely related species appears to be maintained by temporal reproductive isolation during the lunar spawning period reinforced by seasonal differences in reproductive effort.Communicated by O. Seasonal changes in gonald size and stages of gametogenesis in the black abalone Haliotis cracheroidii were related to changes in environmental parameters. H. cracheroidii showed an annual reproductive cycle terminating in a synchronized spawning in late summer. Gametogenesis was initiated immediately after spawning. Gametes were present in the gonad through the winter months. Gametogenesis was initiated a second time in the spring months. Maximal gonad growth (to a gonad index of 20%) occurred during summer months prior to spawning. Changes in gonad size andperiods of initiation of gametogenesis revealed no apparent correlation with changes in seasonal water temperature. Changes in gonad size showed no apparent relation to change in day length. Total polysaccharide levels in foot tissue changed seasonally, indicating that food availability is probably not a factor in directly regulating gonad growth. Gonad index data for the chiton Katharina tunicata (collected over a 10 year period) showed no apparent correlation to seasonal change in water temperature.  相似文献

Mediterranean amberjacks, Seriola dumerilii Risso, were caught off the Pelagie Islands, in the south Mediterranean Sea, between May 1997 and June 1999. Fish blood was sampled, and gonads were collected at 10-day intervals throughout the spawning period and at monthly intervals during the resting period. Concentrations of plasma estradiol-17ß (E2), testosterone (T), 17,20ß-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) and vitellogenin (Vtg) in females; and plasma T and 11-ketoT (11-KT) in males were correlated with changes in gonadal development. The first females that had already ovulated (F5) were found in late May. Most mature females (F4) were caught in June. Post-spawned females (F6) were found from late July until September. Estradiol-17ß was at baseline levels (<0.02 ng ml–1) during autumn/winter and rapidly peaked (6.29±0.68 ng ml–1) from May to early July. Plasma T levels showed a similar profile and were positively correlated to E2 (r2=0.668) during the spawning period. Continuously elevated levels of E2 and T were observed during the spawning season in vitellogenic females (stages F3, F4 and F5). Resting females were found during the autumn/winter months. Vitellogenin levels increased during May and peaked in June, reverting to undetectable levels in August, in parallel with sex steroid changes. Plasma DHP levels peaked in June (283.45±97.3 pg ml–1), falling to basal values (<5 pg ml–1) in August. DHP levels were higher in mature females (F4) than in maturing (F3) and in partially ovulated (F5) females. DHP values increased during germinal vesicle migration, peaked during germinal vesicle breakdown and decreased again during complete oocyte hydration. In males, changes in T and 11-KT plasma levels were related to testis development. The highest levels of T (5.76±2.64 ng ml–1) were measured during spermatogenesis and highest 11-KT (5.28±3.6 ng ml–1) in males with milt, from May to June. This study provides information, for the first time, on the relation between plasma sex steroid profiles and gonad development in wild Mediterranean amberjack, a useful benchmark for broodstock monitoring under controlled conditions.Communicated by R. Reproductive ecology of two major reef-building corals in the eastern Pacific [Pocillopora damicornis (Linnaeus) andPocillopora elegans Dana] was investigated between 1984 and 1990 in Costa Rica, Panama (Gulf of Chiriqui and Gulf of Panama), and the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) following the 1982–83 El Niño disturbance. Mature spermatocytes and oocytes were found in both species and were usually present in the same polyp in nearly equal ratios. Numerous zooxanthellae were observed in mature, unfertilized oocytes. Although spawning in field populations was not observed, it is likely that both pocilloporids are simultaneous hermaphroditic spawners, as evidenced by the disappearance of mature gametes after full moon. This is in contrast with most known pocilloporid corals that brood and release planula larvae. Corals were reproductively most active in the thermally stable environments of Costa Rica and the Gulf of Chiriqui (Panama) where 32 to 90% of all colonies contained gametes. In the moderately varying thermal conditions in the Galapagos Islands, 16 to 40% of colonies contained gametes, and in the pronounced seasonal upwelling environment of the Pearl Islands (Panama) only 6 to 18% of colonies contained gametes. Year-round reproduction occurred in Costa Rica and the Gulf of Chiriqui, whereas reproduction was confined to warm periods in the seasonally varying environments of the Galapagos Islands and the Gulf of Panama. Pocilloporid corals in Costa Rica and the Gulf of Chiriqui demonstrated lunar spawning activity, with mature gametes present a few days before and after full moon. Some limited spawning may have occurred also at new moon. While frequent gamete maturation has been demonstrated in this study, the relatively low rates of larval recruitment occurring on eastern Pacific coral reefs disturbed by the 1982–83 El Niño suggest that the recovery of important frame-building corals could be greatly prolonged.  相似文献

A mass synchronous spawning of the sea urchin Evechinus chloroticus (Valenciennes) was observed in situ in Doubtful Sound, a large New Zealand fiord. Spawning occurred between 17:30 hrs and 18:30 hrs on 27 January 1994 and coincided with a full moon, spring tides and a period of decreasing sea temperatures. During spawning, the sea urchins formed a dense spawning aggregation of both sexes, with >90% of the urchins observed spawning at the time. Spawned gametes clouded the water column, and some were eaten by small labrid fish species. The spawning, which may have been as widespread as 40 km, marked a 42 to 50% decrease in gonad indices and resulted in a widespread, dense cohort of  E. chloroticus larvae within the fiord. The reproductive ecology of Pavona gigantea Verrill and Gardineroseris planulata (Dana) was investigated in the equatorial eastern Pacific region from 1985 to 1994. These zooxanthellate scleractinian corals were adversely affected in this region during the 1982–1983 El Niño warming event. Both species were hermaphroditic, with individual colonies showing sequential cosexual development, thus resulting in dominantly outbreeding reproduction. Sexuality was mixed, with high percentages of gonochoric and hermaphroditic colonies in both species. Approximately 1:1 male-to-female gonad ratios were found in gonochoric and hermaphroditic colonies combined. Broadcast spawning was observed in P. gigantea in the Galápagos Islands, and the sudden disappearance of mature gametes and the presence of spent gonads suggest that G. planulata is also a broadcast spawner. Colonies of both species with 200 cm2 (10 cm diam) live tissue were nonreproductive. Estimated ages of the youngest reproductive colonies were 11 yr for P. gigantea and 20 yr for G. planulata. The percentage of all colonies of P. gigantea with gonads at nonupwelling sites (Caño Istand, Costa Rica and Uva Island, Panamá) ranged from 37 to 47%, respectively; colonies with gonads from upwelling environments (Saboga and Taboga Islands, Panamá) ranged from 31 to 39%, respectively, and reproductively active colonies from the thermally variable Galápagos islands comprised 40% of the collections. Compared with P. gigantea, the numbers of sexually active G. planulata colonies were roughly onehalf at nonupwelling Caño Island (20%) and Uva Island (25%) sites, or less (10%) at the upwelling Saboga Island site. Peak reproductive activity in P. gigantea occurred during the rainy season at all study sites. In the nonupwelling Costa Rican (Caño Island) and Panamainan (Uva Island) sites, mean monthly sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) were high (28 to 29°C), but slightly lower than in the dry season (29°C). In the upwelling Gulf of Panamá (Saboga and Taboga Islands), reproduction occurred after mean monthly SSTs increased from 24 to 28–29°C. In the Galápagos Islands, reproductive activity peaked during sea warming, when mean monthly SSTs reached 25°C. Sexually active colonies of G. planulata, present only at the main collection sites of Caño and Uva Islands, were also observed during the wet season. The presence of mature or spawned gonalds in both species mostly around new and full lunar phases suggests that spawning is at least weakly synchronized with moon phase. Fecundity estimates disclosed the following nonsignificant differences between sites for P. gigantea, expressed as egg production cm-2 colony surface surface yr-1: Galápagos (10 300 to 30 800), Uva Island (4900 to 9800), Caño Island (1800 to 7400), Saboga Island (600 to 1300) Taboga Island (1200 to 2400). Fecundity estimates for G. planulata were considerably lower: Uva Island (700 to 1400), Caño Island (500 to 1000). The sexual recruitment of P. gigantea into El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) 1982–1983-disturbed, equatorial eastern Pacific coral communities has been low, with only moderate recovery evident since 1983. G. planulata has revealed no sexual recruitment where seed populations are absent or rare (Caño Island, Galápagos Islands), and only low recruitment (Panamá) in areas with colonies that survived the ENSO disturbance.  相似文献

Reproduction of Holothuria fuscogilva (Selenka, 1867) in the Solomon Islands was investigated over a 4 yr period (1994 to 1998) by macroscopic and microscopic examination of the gonad tubules, the gonad index (GI) method, histological examination of gametogenesis, and spawning-induction trials. The gonad consisted of numerous tubules that dominated the coelom of gravid specimens. New tubules appeared in March, and grew in size and extent of branching until they reached their maximum size and maturity in August. Spawning occurred from August to October, with the majority of gametes released during October, although it was only partial in many individuals. After spawning, the tubules appeared wrinkled and resorbed into the gonad basis. A five-stage gonad maturity scale based on the macroscopic appearance of the gonad tubules corresponded with discrete stages of gametogenesis identified by histology. Gametogenesis was initiated in mid-March, with oogenesis and spermatogenesis occurring in parallel, followed by the growing stage (May to July) which was marked by active gamete development. Successful induction of spawning during the breeding period corroborated the GI and histological data. The uniform growth of gonad tubules indicated that H. fuscogilva in the Solomon Islands does not conform to the progressive tubule recruitment model described for other holothurians. An important application of this study is that the appearance of gonad tubules, removed by biopsy, can be used to determine the gonad condition of wild adults or captive broodstock. The pattern of seasonal gonadal development and variations in plasma sex steroids were investigated in adult male and female winter flounder, Pleuronectes americanus (Walbaum), from Conception Bay Newfoundland beginning August 1987 to December 1988. The winter flounder reproductive cycle can be divided into five consecutive phases of relative reproductive activity including: (1) rapid gonadal recrudescence in the fall (August–December); (2) continued slow gondadal growth in females, or maintenance of the well developed gonads in males, during the winter (December–February); (3) a prespawning phase of gonadal maintenance in the spring (March–April); (4) spawning early in the summer (May–June) after the female gonads reach peak weight; and (5) the summer postspawned period (June–August) when the gonads remain regressed. Female gonadal recrudescence in August is characterized by small increases in plasma estrogen levels and recruitment of small oocytes (150 m) into yolk accumulation. For the winter months, estradiol-17 levels in the plasma remain stable, approximately 15 ng ml-1, until rising again together with testosterone to peak hormone levels just prior to spawning in conjunction with the highest seasonal values for the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and oocyte diameter. After spawning, the ovaries are regressed and sex steroids in the plasma fall to very low levels. Rapid seasonal recrudescence of the gonads in males is evident from rising GSI values, which reach a maximum in October, and from substantial early seasonal increases in plasma testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone. Afterwards, although GSI values subsequently decline presumably reflecting the process of spermiogenesis and/or onset of spermiation in some males, the testes remain relatively well developed with the presence of sperm throughout the spawning season. As the proportion of spermiating males increases, the plasma levels of the androgenic steroid hormones rise to peak circulating levels from April to June. At the end of the summer reproductive season, the testes of post-spawned males become regressed and plasma testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone levels fall, reaching the lowest seasonal values.  相似文献
