Quartz-sand tailings is a waste product from the Florida phosphate mining industry. Individual tailings disposal areas may occupy 20 to 60 ha and support no vegetation. A split plot field experiment was conducted on a sand tailings deposit to study the effect of various amendments on yield, quality, and mineral concentrations of ‘Callie’ bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon var.aridus Harlan et de Wet) and ‘Siratro’ [Macroptilium atropurpureum (DC) Urb]. The two species were established on nine treatments: one sand-tailings control (SC); three with air-dried phosphatic clay (PC) at 110, 225, and 340 Mg ha-1; and three with overburden (OB) at 448, 1,120, and 1,800 Mg ha-1. All PC and OB treatment rates contained air-dried sewage sludge (SS) at 45 Mg ha-1 and were all roto-tilled to a 20 to 25 cm depth. There were two additional treatments of OB at 1800 Mg ha-1 without SS, with and without roto-tilling into sand tailings. Callie established slower (P<0.05) on SC and OB, than on treatments containing SS and/or PC. However, after the root system developed, yields were similar on all sand-tailings treatments. Crude protein andin vitro organic matter digestion for Callie and Siratro did not differ between soil treatments, but Siratro was generally superior to Callie in forage quality. Forage concentrations of P, K, Ca. Mg, Mn, and Zn were adequate in both species for good cattle growth on all treatments. However, Cu tended to be low in Siratro for plant and cattle growth. Once root systems were well established, good yields of quality forage with suitable mineral concentrations were produced on regularly fertilized, quartz-sand tailings.  相似文献

The requirement of plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) larvae for the fatty acids 20:5 3 and 22:6 3 was studied. Larvae were reared from first feeding to beyond metamorphosis on Artemia sp. nauplii (EG brand), whose nutritional content had been manipulated by enrichment. Some larvae were fed Artemia rich in 20:5 3 and 22:6 3, and others were fed nauplii with no 22:6 3 and low levels of 20:5 3 (1.9% of the total fatty acids). The differences in diet had no significant difference on growth or survival of the plaice larvae. The results indicate that the plaice larvae in this study did not require 22:6 3 in their diet, even when the levels of 20:5 3 were low.  相似文献

The age and habitat of the giant squid, Architeuthis sanctipauli Velain, 1877, were determined based on isotopic analyses of the statoliths of three female specimens captured off Tasmania, Australia, between January and March 1996. Assuming that the aragonite of the statoliths formed in equilibrium with seawater, 18O analyses indicated that the squid lived at temperatures of 10.5–12.9°C, corresponding to average depths of 125–250 m and maximum depths of 500 m. The capture records indicated that these squid may have occasionally ranged still deeper, to as much as 1000 m. All the statoliths were labeled with bomb 14C (14C=+22.9 to +44.6), consistent with the depths inferred from 18O. A thin section through one of the statoliths revealed 351 growth increments grouped into check-ring structures every 10–16 increments. A model for statolith growth and the pattern of temporal change in 14C in the water column was used to estimate the ages of the three specimens. These estimates were very sensitive to the choice of depth range over which 14C values were integrated. Assuming that the capture depths represented the maximum habitat depths of these individuals, the calculations suggested an age of 14 years or less. More refined age estimates require a better understanding of the variation of 14C and temperature with depth in the areas in which the squids live.Communicated by J.P. An experimental setup was designed for in situ videotape recording of the particle capture process in the crown of the polychaete Sabella penicillus. Intact individuals of S. penicillus (collected in the Gullmornfjord, Sweden in 1992) were exposed to either 6 m Latex spheres or Rhodomonas sp. flagellate cells (6 m). The capture of the added particles was recorded on video. From frameby-frame analyses particle velocities were estimated and the shape of the three-dimensional particle paths was inferred. The mean velocity of particles approaching the crown was estimated to be ca. 1 mm s-1, increasing to ca. 1.7 mm s-1 in the interpinnule channel. At the moment of capture the particles were seen to follow a curved, near circular path close to the tips of the latero-frontal cilia. The transport velocities on the frontal side of the pinnules and filaments were estimated to be up to 0.15 and 0.5 mm s-1, respectively. Counting captured particles relative to particles arriving within the area of the pinnules gave a rough, direct estimate of nearly 100% retention rate when the polychaete was feeding undisturbed. Together with results from clearance measurements in the literature this implies that the worm is able to capture particles down to 3 m entering the interpinnule channel almost 100% effectively. In view of the 80-m wide interpinnule channel and 40-m spacing between the tips of the latero-frontal cilia on both sides of the channel, this result cannot be explained by mechanisms based solely on direct mechanical contact between cilia and particles but must involve fluid mechanical mechanisms. The present work is the experimental basis for ongoing numerical simulations of the particle motion in the interpinnule channel.  相似文献

Laboratory simulation of light-focusing by water-surface waves   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A laboratory system has been developed to simulate wave-induced irradiance fluctuations that occur in the top few metres of the sea under sunny surface conditions. A principle of operation is that the fluctuations are produced after refraction of light by water waves generated in the tank. Simulated irradiance consists of repetitive high-amplitude flashes resulting from a lens-effect of the waves. Statistical properties of flashes are similar to those recorded at sea. In our laboratory simulation, the flashes that exceed an amplitude level of 1.5 (where is the time-averaged irradiance) have a mean frequency of about 230 min-1, and a typical duration of 5 to 20 ms. The frequency of the flashes decreases exponentially with increasing amplitude level. The system simulates timeaveraged irradiance comparable to full sunlight at shallow depths (800 mol quanta m-2 s-1 over the visible spectral region), and provides light with a reasonable spectral composition. The simulation method was designed for studying responses of phytoplankton, but applications involving optical aspects can also be foreseen.  相似文献

Microbial grazing by two species of meiofaunal harpacticoid copepods (Heteropsyllus nunni and Thompsonula hyaenae) was determined by uptake of radioactive labels following their introduction into natural sediments from a low-energy intertidal site in Florida (29°5440N; 84°3130W) in May 1986. Grazing was related to three methods of radioactive-label introduction: injection, porewater replacement, and slurry. Uptake of label by harpacticoids was examined using two dual-label combinations, 3H-thymidine/14C-bicarbonate and 3H-thymidine/14C-acetate. The injection and porewater-replacement methods yielded statistically indistinguishable results. Results obtained by the slurry method differed significantly from the other two methods. We suggest that the unique results obtained in the slurry method were a consequence of the disruption of microbial-meiofaunal spatial relationships.  相似文献

Summary Frontal gland secretions of termite soldiers of the speciesNasutitermes costalis, N. ephratae, N. nigriceps, N. rippertii, andN. hubbardii were analyzed. The chiral compositions of the monoterpene hydrocarbons were investigated by means of two-dimensional gas chromatography. Two of them, 3-carene and-pinene were present in the form of (–)-enantiomers of high purity in the majority of the samples. The other monoterpenes,-pinene, camphene, sabinene, limonene, and-phellandrene, exhibited a great variation in the enantiopurity between different species.-Pinene and limonene varied significantly even between different colonies within the species.N. costalis was the only species with an invariable composition of the secretion, independent of the locality or origin.  相似文献

The resting rate of ammonia excretion for the sediment living bivalve Nucula tenuis (Montagu) was found to be 38.8 gN mg-1 dw h-1×10-4 in August and November 1985 in the Oslofjord. The excretion rate of experimental individuals was 37% higher when placed in artificial glass bead sediment. The regression between dry weight and excretion was logN excretion=1.338+1.192 log x, where excretion is gN individual-1 h-1×10-4 and log x=mg dry weight.  相似文献

Summary. Polyphagous caterpillars of the giant geometer Biston robustum resemble the twigs of their respective food sources in color and shape. Common predatory ants, including Lasius and Formica, were often observed to freely prowl directly on caterpillars bodies, even after antennal contact. This suggests that the cuticular chemicals of the caterpillars resemble those of the twigs of the foodplants, so we analyzed both by GC and GC-MS. The chemical compositions differed among caterpillars fed on a cherry, Prunus yedoensis, a chinquapin Castanopsis cuspidata, and a camellia Camellia japonica. The cuticular chemicals of the caterpillars resembled those of their corresponding food sources. When the caterpillar diets were switched from the cherry to camellia or chinquapin at the 4th instars, the caterpillars cuticular chemicals changed after molting to resemble those of their respective foods. Caterpillars also changed their cuticular chemicals when they perched on cherry twigs and fed on camellia or chinquapin leaves, but not when they perched on camellia or chinquapin twigs and fed on cherry leaves. The chemical similarities between the caterpillars and the twigs were due to the digestion of host leaves, which indicates that this is a diet-induced adaptation.  相似文献

The ability to resist infections can differ between individuals of different social rank. This study investigates if the clearance of an avian virus infection (Sindbis virus) was related to the social status of greenfinches (Carduelis chloris) and if infected birds would decline in social status. The results showed that virus clearance patterns were related to social status. Within groups of birds with similar plumage color (a social status signal), body mass and age, a birds social status could be used to predict virus clearance patterns. Dominant birds had higher virus concentrations early in the infection and lower virus titres during later stages of the infection as compared to birds that were subordinates. The infection had no significant effect on previously established social ranks, and ranks that were established during the infection did not appear to be influenced by a birds infection status. In conclusion, this study exemplifies a case where the social rank of an individual was a predictor of the ability to clear a viral infection. The underlying physiological mechanisms of this relationship remain to be further investigated.Communicated by C. Brown  相似文献

The precision and persistence of the nocturnal, surface locomotor activity rhythm of the sand-beach amphipod Talorchestia deshayesi is described. The rhythm is expressed as a circadian activity period with no evidence of a circa-tidal component associated with the time of high tide. The rhythm is light-sensitive and entrainment occurs in response to changes in the time of an experimentally simulated dusk transition. Locomotor activity is initiated at the end of the dusk transition with cessation always occurring prior to dawn. The point of activity initiation is taken to be the position of a synchronizing cue controlling entrainment. The cue appears to be an absolute irradiance level of approximately 1.0 to 2.0×10-4 W m-2  相似文献

The effect of light intensity, pH and carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitors on photosynthesis of the red marine macroalgae Solieria filiformis (Kützing) Gabrielson, collected from Taliarte (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands) in 1991, has been investigated. Plants taken from the sea (wild phenotype) developed spherical morphology (ball phenotype) after 2 mo culture in aerated tanks. The photosynthetic oxygen evolution in the wild phenotype was saturated at 100 mol photons m-2s-1, while the ball phenotype displayed saturation at 200 mol photons m-2s-1. The inhibitors of total CA activity (6-ethoxizolamide) and extracellular CA activity (dextran-bound sulfonamide) inhibited photosynthesis at pH 8.2, to 90 and 50% respectively, in both phenotypes. No inhibition of the photosynthetic oxygen evolution was detected at pH 6.5. CA activity was associated with both supernatant and pellet fractions of crude extracts of S. filiformis. The rate of alkalization of the medium by the algae was dependent on light intensity. We suggest that carbon dioxide is the general form of inorganic carbon transported across the plasmamembrane in S. filiformis. HCO3 transport into the cell takes place simultaneously by an indirect mechanism (dehydration to CO2 catalyzed by CAext) and by direct uptake. Extracellular (CAext) and intracellular (CAint) CAs are involved in the mechanisms of inorganic carbon assimilation by S. filiformis.  相似文献

Concentrations of Ca, Mg, K, Na, Cu, Zn, Al, Fe and Mn were measured in soils and in Tamarix nilotica from Wadi Allaqi on the shore of Lake Nasser in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. All of the elements were concentrated in the leaves of Tamarix relative to the stems and roots. Leaf:soil concentration ratios, used as an indicator of metal accumulation in the plant, showed high enrichment factors for Na (67.5), K (63.0) and Mg (35.0); of the trace elements measured, Zn had the highest enrichment factor (7.64). Comparison with other desert species suggested that Tamarix was exceptional only in the accumulation of sodium. Periodic inundation of the soil by Lake Nasser caused dilution and dispersion of the accumulated salts.  相似文献

Littorina angulifera (Lamark) and Nerita senegalensis Gmelin, both intertidal gastropods, appear to have a preference for specific levels of the shore. In some experiments conducted both in the laboratory and in the field, displaced snails exhibited a general homing behaviour when displaced upshore or downshore. Fatty acid biosynthesis in the larval stages of Penaeus japonicus Bate was examined by feeding microencapsulated diets containing (1-14C) palmitic acid, and fat-free diets supplemented with defined fatty acids. Highest larval growth rates were achieved on diets containing Tapes philippinarum lipid and, when defined fatty acids were substituted, on diets containing 20:63 fatty acid. The radioactive tracer experiments indicate that 16:17, 18:0 and 18:19 fatty acids may be synthesised from palmitic acid and that P. japonicus larvae may possess the ability to elongate 18:33 to 20:53 and 22:63, and 18:26 to 20:46. However, the rates of these reactions appear to be too slow to meet the larval requirements for essential fatty acids and the 3 series of polyunsaturated fatty acids must be provided in the diet.  相似文献

For elucidation of the metabolism of the endocrine disruptor nonylphenol by Sphingomonas sp. strain TTNP3, the degradation of an isomer of nonylphenol, 4(2,6-dimethyl-2-heptyl)-phenol, has been studied. As in the case of 4(3,5-dimethyl-3-heptyl)-phenol, the metabolism of this nonylphenol isomer leads to the formation of the NIH-shifted product 2(2,6-dimethyl-2-heptyl)-1,4-benzenediol (NIH: National Institute of Health), but also to the alkoxy derivative 4(2,6-dimethylheptan-2-yloxy)phenol as additional metabolite. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing the formation of alkoxyphenol as a degradation product of nonylphenol. Additionally, these results provide for the first time evidence for slight differences in the biodegradation of the isomers of nonylphenol.  相似文献

In our field study we analyzed the C and H isotopic and biochemical (C, N, P, protein, lipid, carbohydrate) composition of the jellyfish Pelagia noctiluca (collected from the Gulf of Trieste in 1985 to 1986) and its presumed diet-net zooplankton. The mean 13C (-18.8) and D (-58.4) ratios of P. noctiluca showed enrichment in heavy isotopes relative to net zooplankton (2 for carbon and 30 for hydrogen). Both the jellyfish and net zooplankton were characterized by a linear correlation between 13C and D. C. N, P, protein, lipid, and carbohydrate contents of P. noctiluca were low on a dry weight basis as compared to net zooplankton. Significantly lower C:N and C:P ratios were found in jellyfish indicating a greater loss of carbon relative to nitrogen and phosphorus along the passage to a higher trophic level. Isotopic and biochemical evidence indicate that, though collected in nearshore waters, P. noctiluca depended on autochthonous marine organic matter.  相似文献

The ratios of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the lipids of hatchery-reared plaice [Pleuronectes platessa (L.)] maintained on a diet containing corn oil and freeze-dried cod muscle accurately reflect ratios of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the diet. Such plaice have much greater levels of triglycerides in both their livers and extrahepatic tissues than wild plaice of comparable size; the total amount of 22:6 3 acid in triglycerides of the two groups is, however, very similar. Transfer of experimental plaice to a fat-free diet caused a marked depletion of triglycerides from both livers and extrahepatic tissues with almost all fatty acids being reduced in amount. Addition of 12:0 and 14:0 ethyl esters (4% of each) to the fat-free diet caused some accumulation of triglycerides in extrahepatic tissues. Further addition of 18:2 6 and 18:3 3 acids (both at levels of 0.4%) to the diet caused an accumulation of triglycerides in the liver. These triglycerides had increased levels of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids up to C 18 but the levels of higher polyunsaturated fatty acids were not inereased. There was relatively little change in the fatty acids of phospholipids throughout these experimental dietary regimes. The levels of phospholipids were constant and very similar to those of wild plaice. The results indicate: (1) plaice fed a diet relatively low in 22:6 3 acid may accumulate relatively large amounts of triglyceride in order to store adequate amounts of 22:6 3 acid; (2) plaice are capable of synthesising saturated and mono-unsaturated fatty acids up to C 18 in the presence of dietary 12:0 and 14:0 acids; (3) 18:2 6 and 18:3 3 acids in the diet do not undergo chain elongation and further desaturation in plaice with the dietary regimes we used.  相似文献

The spatial organisation of male and female wood mice,Apodemus sylvaticus, was investigated in a large-scale radio-tracking study on arable farmland near Oxford, United Kingdom, during the breeding season. Both sexes had significantly larger home ranges in the breeding season than at other times, and the breeding season home ranges of male (X = 1.44 ha) were significantly larger than those of females (X = 0.49 ha). Home range overlap was significantly greater between males, and between males and females, than it was between females. Overlap between males tended to be greatest in heavily utilised areas. Except during sexual consortship, there was minimal evidence of dynamic interaction among individuals. Home range sizes of breeding males varied widely, as did their body weights. There was no relationship between male body weight and home range size or any other movement parameter. However, males with the largest home ranges had the highest scores on all other movement parameters, indicating that they expended more energy in movement. These more vigorous males had access to the home ranges of more females than did males with small home ranges.  相似文献

The relationships between aggressive behaviour and animal density and between aggressive behaviour and metabolic excretion have been investigated in Carcinus mediterraneus Czerniavsky. Increasing the crab density by increasing the number of crabs or reducing the available area revealed that the aggressive interactions perindividual did not increase. The frequency of interactions reached a maximum in several minutes following the introduction of crabs. Individuals isolated between 6 and 24 h were more aggressive than non-isolated ones. The water in which a group of crabs had been held had an inhibitory effect (not abolished by commercial aquarium filters) on aggressiveness of pairs of crabs grater than plain water or water in which single crabs had been kept. No home-group effect was observed. The effect of group water was enhanced by increasing the concentration of crabs in the duration of confinement, and it is probably due to the accumulation of catabolites in the medium. Crabs kept in groups had a greater excretion than isolated crabs and the nitrogen oupput decreased with an increase in the number of crabs or whith a decrease in the size of the tank (with a constant volume of water and number of crabs).  相似文献
