Algal and bacterial biomass and production were measured in the plankton, platelet ice and congelation ice communities at one station in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica during September and October 1986. Bacterial abundances and particulate organic carbon and nitrogen were 10 to 100 times greater in the plankton than in the sea ice, whereas the chlorophyll a concentrations in the plankton and sea ice microbial communities (SIMCO) were similar Rates of both light-limited and light-saturated photosynthesis and daily primary production were 2 to 6 times greater in the plankton than in the SIMCO. Bacterial growth rates ranges from 0.7 to 1.5 d-1 in all three communities; however, because of the greater bacterial biomass in the plankton, bacterial production was 15 to 20 times higher there than in the SIMCO. These results suggest that during the early austral spring, planktonic production contributes significantly to total production in ice-covered environments.  相似文献

The principal trophic levels, each subdivided into groups of organismic elements, are distinguished in the planktonic communities of the Eastern Equatorial and the Peruvian upwellings. Production intensity or metabolism have been determined experimentally for all elements. A scheme is suggested for computing production from data on metabolism for all the elements of a community, as well as for computing net and real production and other functional characteristics for definite trophic levels and the community as a whole. Based on the quantitative estimation of the efficiency of primary production and other functional characteristics, the development of communities is divided into production and destruction periods; they are, in turn, subdivided into steps associated with a certain degree of water trophicity. The balance of net production of the communities in the Peruvian upwelling indicates that the excess production of a community above the shelf is utilized completely in the narrow (100 to 150 sea miles) band of off-shore water. This paper describes an attempt to trace the changes taking place in the functional characteristics of plankton communities and to compare them with the changes observed in the communities of the Peruvian and East-Equatorial upwellings.  相似文献

In mid-summer 1975 throughout the Western Slope Water of the North Atlantic Ocean, massive numbers ofSalpa aspera performed a diel vertical migration of at least 800 m. This resulted in a movement of 85 to 90% of the total zooplankton biomass out of the upper 500 m during the day. Fecal pellet production and losses from this salp population were estimated to contribute approximately 12 mg C m-2 day-1 to the deep planktonic and benthic populations. If all this organic matter reached the deep-sea floor, it would represent over 100% of the daily deep-sea benthic infauna energy requirements.  相似文献

Abstract

Kingston Harbour has been experiencing increased levels of organic pollution since initial ecological assessments in 1971. to develop a new baseline of eutrophication in the Harbour 20 years later, and determine the most appropriate indices to be used in the continued monitoring the area, the water quality of Kingston Harbour was reassessed between December 1992 and 1993, by contemporaneous sampling of traditional water column parameters and planktonic communities at 28 stations within the Harbour. Indices used for water quality assessment were temperature, salinity, light penetration, dissolved oxygen, BOD and nutrients (nitrates-N, phosphate-P and ammonia-N). Results indicated that the planktonic community provided the most reliable index of increased eutrophication and changes in water quality. While physical variables indicated little change in Harbour waters and chemical variables indicated significant but erratic changes, the planktonic community displayed the classic characteristics of eutrophication. Phytoplankton biomass (a maximum of 148 mg m?3 chlorophyll a) was 5 to 10 times greater than in 1971 while zooplankton abundances (maximum of 80,000 animals m?3) were 4 times greater. in both cases the community composition had altered and there were fewer taxa than previously found.  相似文献

Acetylene reduction rates were measured in lagoonal sediments, cyanobacterial mats and limestone surfaces between 1991 and 1995 at many sites, depths and seasons; all the studied substrata contained cyanobacteria. The acetylene reduction/15N2 fixation ratio was measured for the different communities and varied between 1.8 and 4.8, depending on substratum. Fixation rates were 1.7 to 7 times higher during daylight compared to night-time rates. N2 fixation rates ranged from 0.4 to 3.9 mg N m-2 day-1 for the lagoonal sediment/mat communities, and the rate was about 2 mg N m-2 day-1 for the lagoonal limestone substrata. Total lagoonal benthic N2 fixation contributed 24.4% of the total nitrogen requirement for the benthic primary production of benthic communities of the lagoon. The input of N2 fixation by the microbial planktonic communities (including cyanobacteria) of the lagoon, which are highly productive, is unquantified but is likely to be large.  相似文献

In soft-sediment marine and estuarine habitats, population dynamics of resident species are an important aspect of commnity structure and function, yet the population dynamics of many members of these communities remain poorly studied. The population dynamics and secondary production of the infaunal terebellid polychaete Loimia medusa (Savigny) were investigated in a shallow sand habitat of the York River, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, between June 1989 and December 1990. Monthly sampling throughout 1 yr revealed that individuals were present year-round with maximum densities of 60 ind m-2 and a life span of 1 yr. Abundances were highest from August through September when two cohorts recruited to the population. Mean individual growth was highest in summer, and appeared to be a function of temperature rather than food limitation. Adults were reproductive from May through October and exhibited high fecundity; the number of oocytes segment-1 ranged from 201 to 15840 among worms. Larvae initially appeared approximately 1 mo after gametes were first observed in adult L. medusa, and these larvae appeared to spend less than 1 mo in the plankton. Abundances of larvae in the water column were significantly higher around new moon, suggesting lunar spawning periodicity. New recruits attained sexual maturity within 2 mo of settlement. Secondary production was 3.3 g ash-free dry wt m-2 yr-1 and the P/B (production/biomass) ratio was 3.0. Despite equilibrium species characteristics such as large size, high fecundity, and planktonic larvae, L. medusa exhibits some characteristics typically ascribed to opportunistic species, namely, the capacity for rapid growth and maturation, a short life span and a relatively high P/B ratio. This mixture of life history characteristics emphasizes that there is no simple dichotomy between opportunistic and equilibrium species. We caution that the dominance of large infaunal polychaetes in soft-bottom estuarine and marine environments may not be a useful indicator of undisturbed habitats.  相似文献

Large predatory fishes are disproportionately targeted by reef fisheries, but little is known about their trophic ecology, which inhibits understanding of community dynamics and the potential effects of climate change. In this study, stable isotope analyses were used to infer trophic ecology of a guild of large predatory fishes that are targeted by fisheries on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Each of four focal predators (Plectropomus leopardus, Plectropomus maculatus, Lethrinus miniatus and Lutjanus carponotatus) was found to have a distinct isotopic signature in terms of δ13C and δ15N. A two-source mixing model (benthic reef-based versus pelagic) indicated that P. leopardus and L. miniatus derive the majority (72 and 62 %, respectively) of their production from planktonic sources, while P. maculatus and L. carponotatus derive the majority (89 and 74 %, respectively) of their production from benthic reef-based sources. This indicates that planktonic production is important for sustaining key species in reef fisheries and highlights the need for a whole-ecosystem approach to fisheries management. Unexpectedly, there was little isotopic niche overlap between three of four focal predators, suggesting that inter-specific competition for prey may be low or absent. δ15Nitrogen indicated that the closely related P. leopardus and P. maculatus are apex predators (trophic level > 4), while δ13C indicated that each species has a different diet and degree of trophic specialisation. In view of these divergent trophic ecologies, each of the four focal predators (and the associated fisheries) are anticipated to be differentially affected by climate-induced disturbances. Thus, the results presented herein provide a useful starting point for precautionary management of exploited predator populations in a changing climate.  相似文献

The planktonic larval durations of a preliminary sample of one hundred species of wrasses from both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans were estimated with the use of the daily otolith-increment aging-technique. Larval durations were determined by counting the number of daily increments between the center of the otolith and the mark corresponding to settlement. The duration of the planktonic larval phase of wrasses appears to be extremely variable between species, ranging from 15 d in Diproctacanthus xanthurus to 121 d in a specimen of Thalassoma ballieui. Larval durations within species were also variable, especially in species with relatively long durations. Congeners tended to have similar larval durations and similar otolith-increment characteristics. Hawaiian and Eastern Pacific species had longer larval durations than their Caribbean or Western Pacific congeners. Similarly, Hawaiian populations had significantly longer larval durations than their Western Pacific conspecifics. The implications of these findings for biogeographical studies are discussed.  相似文献

The hypothesis that drifting red algal mats inhibit settlement of planktonic larvae was tested in a field experiment in 1986. Substratum free of algae (caged boxes) was compared with substratum covered with algae (natural substratum and open boxes). Whereas settling densities of 1500 to 5500 ind. m-2 of the bivalves Macoma balthica, Cardium glaucum and Mya arenaria were observed in sediment without algal cover, no recruits of the same species were found beneath the algae during the period of peak settlement (June to July). The same difference was observed for the polychaete Nereis diversicolor, although in this case occasional individuals were found beneath the algae. The results demonstrate that algae mats may be efficient inhibitors of larval settlement to benthic soft-substratum communities. It is concluded that algae act as a larval filter.  相似文献

Sediment traps were deployed in a 60 m water column near the Eddystone Lighthouse on the south west coast of England for one year from March 1984. In April, the traps collected the cysts of a planktonic ciliate with a flux of almost 35 000 m-2 d-1. The cysts were attributed to a planktonic oligotrich [provisionally identified as Strombidium crassulum (Leegard) Kahl], which was common in the water at the time. Identification was achieved through the discovery of the incipient formation of the cysts in preserved water samples and by the similarity of the morphology of the cysts with that of other oligotrichid ciliates. Attempts to prove the relationship by incubation have so far failed. The production of the cysts followed the main spring bloom of diatoms and coincided with a small bloom of autotrophic oligotrichs. In the traps, the total number and percentage of cysts with contents decreased rapidly after the encystment event. However, potentially viable cysts were still recorded in the plankton eleven months later, with minimum fluxes of 200 cysts m-2 d-1. Resuspension of bottom sediments by tides and storms ensured that a large population of cysts was always present in the water column during the winter, awaiting the right conditions to stimulate excystment and the initiation of a new motile population.  相似文献

Nitrogen cycling in a natural planktonic food chain was followed before and after perturbation by copper (10 g l-1). Observations were separated into effects from artificial containment of the food chain and effects from the addition of copper. An initial reduction of seston-N and subsequent recovery, uniformly high settling rates of suspended particulate-N, and general decrease in zooplankton-N were attributed to the physical limitations imposed by the enclosures (e.g. elimination of normal mixing processes). Acute inhibition of nitrate assimilation by the seston, acute elevation of seston-N settling and chronic inhibition of zooplankton feeding, along with accelerated decline in zooplankton stocks, were attributed to copper stress. Since zooplankton stocks and fluxes were most drastically affected by copper, its overall effect on N-cycling through the planktonic food chain would depend largely upon the importance of zooplankton in regulating the production of the remaining seston.  相似文献

Increments on the otoliths of two common coral reef fishes, the bluehead wrasse Thalassoma bifasciatum and the slippery dick Halichoeres bivittatus, were demonstrated by mark-recapture experiments to be daily. Otoliths were marked in two ways; by depriving fish of light, food, and temperature cycles and also by supplemental feeding in the field. Both experiments were performed in late 1980 in the San Blas Islands of Panamá. A mark corresponding to settlement of the planktonic larva onto the reef was found on the otoliths of the bluehead wrasse. This settlement mark was used to calculate the dates of settlement of a collection of juveniles of this species taken from a patch reef in the San Blas Islands of Panamá in 1981. Settlement occurred in short and irregular bursts. The number of daily increments before the settlement mark indicates a planktonic larval life of 40 to 72 d.  相似文献

Forty-four measurements of net primary productivity by 14C fixation were made at a station near Barbados, West Indies, over a period of 22 months; in addition 12 measurements were made at 7 deep-water stations in the tropical Western Atlantic Ocean. Average daily production was 0.288 g C/m2 and estimated annual net production 105 g C/m2. There was no evidence of seasonal variations in the rate of primary production nor of significant differences between production at the principal station and the additional deep-water stations. The data are, therefore, considered to be representative of the rate of primary production in this part of the tropical Western Atlantic Ocean and not significantly affected by proximity to land.  相似文献

Measurements of net photosynthesis in mangrove communities by direct methods is technically and logistically difficult. Recording litter fall alone neglects other important components of production. A method has been developed which lends itself to ready application for obtaining survey estimates of photosynthetic yield. The procedure involves measurement of light attenuation through forest canopies attributable to photosynthetic utilization and standardized against leaf pigment assays. Rates of assimilation are assumed from the literature. Production estimates range between 16 and 26 kgC ha-1 day-1.  相似文献

Effective escape behavior contributes to the success of copepods in planktonic communities. The kinematics of escape were studied in tethered Undinulavulgaris (Calanoida) by analyzing the timing and magnitude of their power strokes to a precisely controlled, sudden mechanical perturbation in the surrounding water. Copepods responded with rapid swims to water velocities of 36 to 86 μm s−1. Reaction times were under 2.5 ms following stimulus onset. The time course of force exerted was complex, but reproducible from stimulus to stimulus. Multiple power strokes (“kicks”) were frequently observed in response to single stimuli. Time intervals of 5 ms were observed between the end of one escape kick and the beginning of the next. U. vulgaris developed maximum forces of 40 to over 100 dynes (dyn) during a rapid swim. The behavioral reaction times and intervals between multiple responses observed in this calanoid are among the shortest reported in aquatic invertebrates. Our current knowledge of plankton ecology ascribes a large proportion of zooplankton losses to zooplankton cannibalism and carnivory, rather than via the activity of higher trophic levels beyond the plankton. However, planktonic ecosystem models, such as the widely used nutrient–phytoplankton–zooplankton (NPZ) type models, typically represent all zooplankton losses by mathematically (rather than biologically) justified closure functions. Even where it is assumed that these closure functions include zooplanktonic cannibalism and carnivory, these processes are not explicitly implemented within the grazing function of the zooplankton. Here it is argued that this representation of zooplankton losses through “closure” terms within planktonic food web models is neither appropriate nor necessary. The general consequences of implementing a simple function incorporating zooplankton cannibalism and carnivory (intra-guild predation) within a planktonic food web model are compared against models implementing different types of traditional closure functions. While the modelled biomass outputs may appear similar, the fate of annual primary production and f-ratios vary widely. There appears no justification for the continued use of traditional closure term to depict zooplankton loss processes on biological or modelling arguments. To do so can seriously misrepresent the fate of primary production and thence trophic dynamics.  相似文献

The copepod community observed during an 18-month period at the mouth of eutrophic Kingston Harbour, Jamaica, was dominated by small species of Parvocalanus, Temora, Oithona, and Corycaeus. Mean copepod biomass was 22.1 mg AFDW m−3 (331 mg m−2). Annual production was 1679 kJ m−2, partitioned as 174 kJ m−2 naupliar, 936 kJ m−2 copepodite, 475 kJ m−2 egg and 93 kJ m−2 exuvial production. All nauplii, most copepodites and many adults, equivalent to half of the biomass and production, were missed by a standard 200-μm plankton net, emphasizing the importance of nauplii and small species in secondary production estimates. The evidence suggests that growth rates and production are generally not food limited, and we speculate that size-selective predation shapes the structure of the harbour community. Biomass and production are higher than previous estimates for tropical coastal waters, but comparable to other eutrophic tropical embayments and many productive temperate ecosystems. Far from being regions of low productivity, tropical zooplankton communities may have significant production and deserve greater research attention than they currently receive. Four species of estuarine benthic diatoms: Amphiprora c. f. paludosa W. Smith, Nitzschia c. f. dissipata (Kützing) Grunow, Navicula arenaria Donkin, and Nitzschia sigma (Kützing) W. Smith were grown in unialgal cultures. The growth rates of the diatoms were determined as the rate of increase of the chlorophyll a content of the cultures. The diatoms were cultured at different combinations of temperture, daylength, and quantum irradiance. The highest growth rates of Navicula arenaria occurred at 16° to 20°C; the other 3 species had their optimum at 25°C or higher. The small-celled species had higher growth rates at their optimum temperature, but at lower temperatures the growth rates of all 4 species became very similar. The minimum daily quantum irradiance that could effect light-saturated growth at 12° and 20°C ranged from 2.5 to 5.0 E.m-2.day-1. At 12°C, two species had their highest growth rates under an 8 h daily photoperiod. At 20°C, the three species tested all had highest growth rates under 16 h daily photoperiod. The growth response of the benthic diatoms is comparable to that of several cultures of planktonic diatoms, as described in the literature. The influence of temperature and quantum irradiance on the diatoms in the present investigation was comparable to the influence of temperature and light intensity on the 14C-fixation of marine benthic diatoms (Colijn and van Buurt, 1975).  相似文献

This study represents the first report of primary production rates for Southern California intertidal producers. The production rates of 18 marine macrophytes near Wilson Cove, San Clemente Island, are close to those for other marine algal communities. No apparent relationship was revealed between the productivity of an alga and the division to which it belongs; however, productivity was associated with growth form. Encrusting prostrate forms were the lowest producers in terms of g C/m2/h and g C/g dry weight/h; sheet-like and finely-branched forms showed a greater productivity than coarsely-branched forms. Gelidium pusillum and Ulva californica had considerably greater production rates than the other algae measured.  相似文献
