Growth and development rates were determined for nauplii of Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) in the near-shore waters of a western Norwegian fjord from in situ mesocosm incubations. The major food source for the nauplii was diatoms, but Phaeocystis sp., dinoflagellates and ciliates were also part of the diet. At local temperatures ranging from 4.8 to 5.2 °C the cumulative median development time from hatching to Nauplius VI was 19 d. The time taken to molt to the next naupliar stage was approximately constant (3 d) from Stages IV to VI, but Stage III needed the longest development time (5 d). The instantaneous growth rate in terms of body carbon was negative from hatching to Nauplius Stage II, but as high as 0.25 to 0.30 d−1 from Stage III to V. Enhancement of food resources by nutrient addition led to no significant change in specific growth rates. Additionally, the cohorts from different nutrient regimes showed almost equal development time, size and body carbon within stages. Length–weight relationships of nauplii from the two different food resources were: W low resources = 4.17 × 10−6 × L 2.03 (r 2 = 0.84) and W high resources = 4.29 × 10−6 × L 2.05 (r 2 = 0.92), where weight (W) is in micrograms of C and body length (L) in micrometers. The natural body morphology of naupliar stages I to VI is illustrated with digital images, including the final molt from Nauplius VI to Copepodid Stage I. In general, development of the nauplii was faster than that of the copepodids of C. finmarchicus, and structural growth was exponential from naupliar stages III to VI. This study validates our earlier results that nauplii of C. finmarchicus can obtain high growth and nearly maximal developmental rates at relatively low food levels (∼50 μg C l−1), suggesting that nauplii exhibit far less dependence on food supply than copepodids. We investigated the influence of bacteria and metazooplankton on the production of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and dimethylsulfide (DMS) during blooms of Emiliania huxleyi (Lohmann) Hay and Mohler in seawater mesocosms. The phytoplankton succession was marked by the rapid collapse of an initial Skeletonema costatum (Greville) Cleve bloom followed by a small E. huxleyi bloom. The collapse of the diatom bloom was accompanied by an increase in concentrations of dissolved DMSP (DMSPd) and bacterial abundance and activity (as determined by the thymidine incorporation technique). The increase in bacterial activity was followed by a rapid decrease in DMSPd concentrations which remained low for the rest of the experiment, even during the subsequent collapse of the E. huxleyi blooms. The absence of DMSPd and DMS peaks during the declining phase of the E. huxleyi blooms was attributed to the high bacterial activity prevailing at that time. The influence of metazooplankton grazing on DMSP and DMS production was investigated by adding moderate (24 mg dry weight m-3) and high (520 mg dry weight m-3) concentrations of Copepodite Stage V and adults of Calanus finmarchicus to two of four filtered (200 m mesh net) enclosures during the E. huxleyi blooms. The addition of C. finmarchicus, even in high concentrations, had no apparent effect on the dynamics of E. huxleyi, suggesting that the copepods were not grazing significantly on nanophytoplankton. The addition of copepods in high concentrations favored an accumulation of chlorophyll a and particulate DMSP. These results suggest that copepods were preying on the herbivorous microzooplankton which, in turn, was controlling the biomass of nanophytoplankton. DMS production was also enhanced in the enclosure with maximum metazooplankton biomass, suggesting that the grazing of C. finmarchicus on microzooplankton containing DMSP may contribute to DMS production. These results provide strong support to the emerging idea that bacteria and metazooplankton grazing play a dominant role in determining the timing and magnitude of DMS pulses following phytoplankton blooms.  相似文献

The potential effects of sucralose on the Arctic copepods Calanus finmarchicus and Calanus glacialis were studied in Disko Bay, Greenland. Sucralose is a non-calorie sweetener and chlorine derivate of sucrose containing three chlorine atoms. Scandinavian screening studies of sucralose in 2007, revealed sucralose in all effluent samples. To investigate whether sucralose is harmful to the Arctic aquatic ecosystems, possible short-term effects were investigated on egg production, hatching rate, food intake and mortality of two species of Arctic copepods. The copepods were exposed to six different concentrations (0–50,000 ng · L?1) of sucralose, which spans the range of concentrations found in the screening studies. Exposure led to no mortality among the copepods. Food intake by C. glacialis increased with increasing concentrations of sucralose. In C. finmarchicus, food intake did not differ with increasing concentrations. No effect of sucralose was observed on egg production of C. finmarchicus. Despite increased food intake with increasing concentrations of sucralose, C. glacialis did not increase its egg production. The results show that both species responded weakly to sucralose, but with C. glacialis being possibly slightly more sensitive to sucralose than C. finmarchicus.  相似文献

Feeding, egg production, hatching success and early naupliar development of Calanus finmarchicus were measured in three north Norwegian fjords during a spring bloom dominated by diatoms and the haptophyte Phaeocystis pouchetii. Majority of the copepod diet consisted of diatoms, mainly Thalassiosira spp. and Chaetoceros spp., with clearance rates up to 10 ml ind−1 h−1 for individual algae species/groups. Egg production rates were high, ranging from ca 40 up to 90 eggs f−1 d−1, with a hatching success of 70–85%, and fast naupliar development through the first non-feeding stages. There was no correlation between the egg or nauplii production and diatom abundance, but the hatching success was slightly negatively correlated with diatom biomass. However, the overall high reproductive rates suggested that the main food items were not harmful for C. finmarchicus reproduction in the area, although direct chemical measurements were not conducted. The high population egg production (>1,20,000 eggs m−2 d−1) indicated that a large part of the annual reproduction took place during the investigation, which stresses the importance of diatom-dominated spring phytoplankton bloom for population recruitment of C. finmarchicus in these northern ecosystems.  相似文献

The total lipid and wax ester content as well as the fatty acid and alcohol composition of all copepodid stages and adults of Calanus finmarchicus s.l. were investigated at different locations in the North Sea in 1983 and 1984. Total lipid and the wax ester proportion increased exponentially until Copepodid V. The females were sometimes lower in lipids than the Stage V. The wax ester proportion reached about 90% of total lipids in males and Copepodid V and up to 40% in Copepodid I. The major fatty acids were 16:0, 20:5, and 22:6 and the major fatty alcohols were 16:0, 20:1 and 22:1. At one station the 18:4 acid became one of the dominant acids, because of a Phaeocystis sp. bloom, indicating that the fatty acids of the diet are incorporated mostly unchanged into the lipids of the copepods. The other main fatty acids 20:1 and 22:1 are probably synthesized de novo, serving as precursors for the principal alcohols 20:1 and 22:1. Their levels decreased in the younger stages due to increases in 16:0 alcohol. The fatty alcohol-forming enzyme seems to be specific for saturated and monounsaturated acids, which may be synthesized de novo or derived from diet.  相似文献

Day/night zooplankton sampling in Kosterfjorden, Sweden, gave information on population succession, vertical distribution and feeding of Calanus finmarchicus over 17 months. Copepodid Stage 1 and 2 (C-I, C-II) were present from December to August, indicating reproduction during most of the year. Mating and breeding for the overwintering generation mainly took place in February/March, resulting in peak abundance of C-I in March/April. Secondary breeding periods were in April and July/August, but the resulting recruitment from these were low. The relative recruitment success in the first spring was around 13 times higher than during the second spring. Low temperature in the surface water early in the year and depression of the spring phytoplankton bloom may have caused the failure in the second year. Population biomass peaked at >15 g dry weight m−2 during the numeric peak of the youngest stages in March/April. A more sustainable level of high biomass of 8 to 10 g dw m−2 was gradually built up during summer, mainly due to a continuous accumulation of C-Vs. Adults and C-Vs comprised the overwintering population, with 7 to 14% and 85 to 93%, respectively, for the 2 years, but only C-Vs staying in the deep water were in a resting state. Adult males showed a strong diurnal vertical migration (DVM) of the usual type from spring to early autumn and a reversed DVM during the cold season. They were in a feeding state throughout the year. Adult females showed the usual type of DVM during summer to autumn, but commonly a reversed DVM during winter to spring. They were usually in a feeding state, with no pronounced differences between surface and deep water or between day and night. C-Vs aggregated in the deep water from October to March and performed DVM in April to June. They were commonly feeding in the deep water between March and June but showed no or very low feeding activity there from July to February. C-Vs in the surface water were commonly feeding and showed the highest proportion of feeding in autumn, when the population in the deep water was inactive. C-V constituted up to nearly 100% of the population biomass, and therefore must be of profound ecological importance. Defined by this dominant role, the population of C. finmarchicus can be characterised as having an active period of feeding, reproduction and development from February to July with a following 6 to 7 months of resting in the deep water, when development is arrested and no feeding occurs.  Growth and developmental rates were determined for copepodids of Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) from experimental seawater mesocosms in a western Norwegian fjord. The instantaneous growth rates (g) from copepodid stage I (CI) to adult ranged from 0.08 to 0.10 d−1. Daily per capita mortality rate of the cohorts was as low as 0.012 d−1 (1.2% d−1). At local increasing temperatures (5.1 to 8.3 °C), development was equiproportional, and the cumulative median development time from egg to CV was approximately 65 d. CV moulted to males and females, and egg production was initiated. Enhancement of food resources by nutrient addition caused a 23.4% increase in growth rates from CI to adult. Additionally, copepodid stages showed a generally larger body size, carbon and nitrogen content and total storage lipid content (wax esters + triacylglycerols) in response to enhanced resources. Our data support an elsewhere proposed exponential-growth hypothesis; growth of the structural compartments and store lipids (mostly wax esters) was exponential during the copepodid stages. However, a sigmoidal pattern of growth best described growth of adult stages if reared at high resources, and depot lipid accumulation in late CVs and adults at high resources. Body nitrogen growth increased exponentially, however, no significant changes in nitrogen specific growth rates were found between individuals from low and high resources. CV and adults seem to have reached near-maximal weights at high resources, whereas structural weight continued to increase at low resources. Despite the differences in structural growth dynamics, cohort development was similar until the end of CV. During the onset of sexual differentiation, the male:female ratio and the adult:CV ratio were highest at high food resources, suggesting that the time used for the final moult depends on the feeding history of the copepods in relation to food quality and quantity. It appears that relatively small changes in food availability strongly influence the biochemical composition of C. finmarchicus copepodids. Phytoplankton production, standing crop, and loss processes (respiration, sedimentation, grazing by zooplankton, and excretion) were measured on a daily basis during the growth, dormancy and decline of a winter-spring diatom bloom in a large-scale (13 m3) marine mesocosm in 1987. Carbonspecific rates of production and biomass change were highly correlated whereas production and loss rates were unrelated over the experimental period when the significant changes in algal biomass characteristic of phytoplankton blooms were occurring. The observed decline in diatom growth rates was caused by nutrient limitation. Daily phytoplankton production rates calculated from the phytoplankton continuity equation were in excellent agreement with rates independently determined using standard 14C techniques. A carbon budget for the winter bloom indicated that 82.4% of the net daytime primary production was accounted for by measured loss processes, 1.3% was present as standing crop at the end of the experiment, and 16.3% was unexplained. Losses via sedimentation (44.8%) and nighttime phytoplankton respiration (24.1%) predominated, while losses due to zooplankton grazing (10.7%) and nighttime phytoplankton excretion (2.8%) were of lesser importance. A model simulating daily phytoplankton biomass was developed to demonstrate the relative importance of the individual loss processes.  相似文献

Natural feeding rates of Copepodite Stages IV and V, and adult female Calanus glacialis (Jaschnov) and Copepodite Stage V and adult female C. finmarchicus (Gunnerus) were estimated using fluorescence analysis of gut contents. Measurements were made on copepods sampled from arctic waters east of Svalbard (Barents Sea) during the spring phytoplankton increase, in the period from 27 May to 13 June, 1983. Observations on Copepodite Stages IV and V and adult female C. glacialis suggest that the gastric evacuation rate is independent of developmental stage, whereas C. finmarchicus Copepodite Stage V showed a lower gastric evacuation rate than adult females. Gut fullness displayed a low correlation with the ambient chlorophyll concentrations. Ingestion rates calculated for C. glacialis were 0.3, 2.3, and 11.0 g C h-1 for Copepodite Stages IV and V and adult females, respectively. Copepodite Stage V and adult female C. finmarchicus ingested 0.9 and 1.1 g C h-1 at a temperature of ca.-1.0°C. The maximum ingestion rate in terms of percent body carbon d-1 was higher for adult female C. glacialis and C. finmarchicus than for the respective Copepodite Stage V's. The results are discussed both in relation to the physiological state of the species and to the environmental conditions.  相似文献

The investigation was carried out from 62°N to 73°N and from 14°E to 11°W in the Norwegian Sea during 19 June-12 July 1997. Regional differences in the phase of the seasonal development of the plankton community were evident, most pronounced across the Arctic front. In the Coastal and eastern Atlantic domains, post-bloom conditions prevailed, characterised by low chlorophyll a (chl a) levels and a phytoplankton assemblage dominated by coccolithophorids and small flagellates. During the study period, egg production rates of Calanus finmarchicus were low (<10 eggs female-1 day-1), older copepodite stages dominated, and the seasonal descent to deeper waters had started. In the Arctic domain, bloom conditions were evident by high chl a levels and a high abundance of large diatoms. Egg production rates were higher (a maximum of 29 eggs female-1 day-1), but the dominance of stages CI-CIII indicated that considerable spawning had already occurred prior to the spring bloom. The seasonal descent had barely started. Both invertebrate and fish predators were most abundant in the Coastal and eastern Atlantic domains, with abundance strongly decreasing north-westwards. No tight relationship between total abundance of invertebrate or fish predators and that of C. finmarchicus was apparent. However, a weak, but significant, relationship between abundance of young stages of chaetognaths and Euchaeta spp. versus young stages of C. finmarchicus was found, indicating that these invertebrate predators develop parallel to the development of the new cohort of C. finmarchicus. In early summer, C. finmarchicus had reached overwintering stages, and had started to accumulate in deeper waters in areas with the highest abundance of horizontally migratory planktivorous fish.  相似文献

Species of Calanus were sampled at stations off southwest Nova Scotia during an 8-d cruise in June, 1982. A simple model using shipboard measurement of molting rates of predominant copepodite stages accurately predicted the changes in cohort structure that occurred at stations along a transect at the beginning and end of the cruise. The combined durations of C. finmarchicus (Gunnerus) stages CIII and CIV, calculated from the inverses of molting rates corrected for presence of diapausing C. glacialis Jaschnov, corresponded well with development times based on laboratory rearing experiments. We conclude that our molting rate measurements accurately reflected processes in nature. This methodology is useful for analyzing the dynamics and production of copepod populations.  相似文献

Relationships between linear dimensions of casts produced at the final moult in the laboratory and definitive sex confirm that Calanus finmarchicus (Gunn.) is sexually dimorphic in Copepodite Stage V. Two forms of Stage V copepodite were present at all times of the year in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. Except in early spring, when size was similar, these were consistently distinguished by the prosome length. The small form moulted to adult females and the large form to adults of either sex. Relative to the metasome, the length of the cephalosome was greater in the large than small form of Stage V copepodite. This, to an increased extent, distinguished males from all females in the adult. Differences between females of the large and those of the small form were similar in the Stage V copepodite and adult. Feminization in the large form entailed an arrest in the differentiation of secondary male sex-characters. Most morphological females moulting from both forms of Stage V copepodite possessed an apparently normal ovary, with eggs extending into oviducal diverticula. In the case of the large form, however, eggs were occasionally absent from diverticula. The gonad in two specimens resembled an immature testis. In males, a normal testis was always present. Differentiation into the adult male entailed the internal suppression of feminizing factors. On average, within collections, females of the large form moulted later than the small form and definitive males. A similarly consistent difference between females of the small form and males was absent. Moulting times in the large form of Stage V copepodite depended on the presence or not of feminization. Differentiation into the adult male required the environmental stimulation of development. Comparisons with moulting patterns in the sea suggest a mechanism that regulates the recruitment of males to the adult.  相似文献

Samples taken in the northern North Sea with the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR), the Undulating Oceanographic Recorder (UOR), the Longhurst Hardy Plankton Recorder (LHPR) and by our colleagues from other participating Institutes during the Fladen Ground Experiment (FLEX 76) were used to describe the vertical distribution and population dynamics of Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) and to provide estimates of the production and carbon budget of the population from 19 March to 3 June, 1976. Total production of the 19 March to 3 June, 1976. Total production of the nauplii and copepodite stages (including adults), during the exponential growth phase in May, was estimated to be in the range of 0.49 to 0.91 g C m-2 d-1 or 29.0 to 55 g dry wt m-2 (14.5 to 27.8 g C m-2) for the three successive 10 d periods in May. Two gross growth efficiencies (K 1) (20 and 34%), together with the lower value of C. finmarchicus production, were used to calculate the gross ingestion levels of algae as 2.45 and 1.44 g C m-2 d-1 (73.5 and 43.2 g C m-2 over the May period). These ingestion levels, together with the algae ingested by other zooplankton species, are greater than the estimated total phytoplankton production of 45.9 g C m-2 over the FLEX period. A number of factors are discussed which could explain the discrepancies between the production estimates. One suggestion is that the vertical distribution of the development stages of this herbivorous copepod and their diel and ontogenetic migration patterns enable it to efficiently exploit its food source. Data from the FLEX experiment indicated that the depletion of nutrients limited the size of the spring bloom, but that it was the grazing pressure exerted by C. finmarchicus which was responsible for the control and depletion of the phytoplankton in the spring of 1976 in the northern North Sea.JONSDAP Contribution No. 51  相似文献

The geographical distribution and annual mean abundance of Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) and C. helgolandicus (Claus) in the northern North Atlantic Ocean were shown in relation to the seasonal and annual fluctuations of abundance of the species in the Celtic Sea from 1960 to 1981. These congeneric copepods, although showing allopatric distributions over most of their geographical range, have sympatric distributions in the Celtic Sea where they dominate the dry weight biomass of the plankton throughout the year. The two species respond differently to the development of the seasonal thermocline and halocline by taking up different vertical distributions in the water column. C. finmarchicus occurred in the colder, more saline water below the thermocline, while C. helgolandicus occurred in the warmer, less saline water above the thermocline. This behaviour is postulated as a mechanism by which these morphologically similar copepods more fully exploit the resources of their temporally and spatially heterogeneous environment and also minimise interspecific competition. The species have the same foraging techniques and are able to exploit the same size spectrum of particulates. The vertical depth strata in which the populations are found for most of the year in the Celtic Sea means that both species exploit the diatom bloom in early spring but, thereafter, C. helgolandicus grazes on the daily production of the autotrophs in the euphotic zone while C. finmarchicus, below the thermocline, has to rely for its food on sedimenting particulates (whole cells, detritus and faecal material). The isolating mechanisms whereby these two populations partition the habitat in the Celtic Sea are discussed.  相似文献

A similar, sexual dimorphism in Copepodite Stage V was observed in winter generations of Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) and C. helgolandicus (Claus), co-existing in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. In both species, the frequency distribution of prosome length in the Copepodite V population was bimodal. Among individual Stage V copepodites kept in the laboratory, those of the larger form alone produced adult males. Indications of morphological distinctions between the forms other than in size, however, were absent. Differences in least-squares regressions of individual cephalosome on metasome lengths, previously attributed to a distinction in prosome shape by Grigg et al. (1985), reflected size alone. These two measurements also were greater in the “large” form, but this independently of each other. Variations in their relative contributions to the prosome length distinguished individuals, and were continuous between the forms. Present and previously published observations on members of the family Calanidae have been compared. The presence, or not, of a sexual distinction in prosome length in the Stage V copepodite is variable among calanids, within and between species. A possible association with the extent of seasonal variations in size and life-cycle characteristics is suggested.  相似文献

Several experiments were conducted with starved and fed females of the Arctic copepod Calanus hyperboreus (1) to investigate their lifespan, reproductive period, egg production and egg viability; (2) to study the effect of origin, i.e., Atlantic and Arctic Waters in the Greenland Sea, on the timing of reproduction; and (3) to study the effect of time of collection on the onset of reproductive activity as a first approach to study control mechanisms of the reproductive cycle. Females collected in October produced up to 1,000 eggs and had a maximum lifespan of 164 days without feeding, whereas fed females produced up to ca. 6,000 eggs and survived up to 806 days. These observations support earlier assumptions that females were multiannual-iteroparous, i.e., capable to spawn in successive years, which would be unique for calanoid copepods. In starved females, clutch size decreased significantly with each spawning event. Viable eggs were produced during most of the life time. There was no difference in the timing of reproductive activity between females from the West Spitsbergen Current and the Greenland Sea Gyre. Fed and starved females collected in May and June began to spawn circa 2 and 4 months after collection, respectively, whereas females collected in August and October started spawning at the same time, in the middle of October. This indicates initiation of reproductive activity in the field in August, coincident with the descent into deep waters. Potential cues for the untimely spawning of females collected in spring and ‘unnatural’ feeding in fall experiments are discussed. Their large size, robustness and combination of different types of diapause in their life cycle make C. hyperboreus a good model organism to study diapause control mechanisms.  相似文献

The interaction of hydrological, chemical and biological factors in a defined time may cause an excess bloom of phytoplankton in an ecosystem, which can persist over a long period or occur from time to time.

This phenomenon has been recorded from the northern Adriatic and coastal enclosed basins along the eastern Adriatic coast (Ka?tela Bay, Split) for a long time now.

During 1988 this phenomenon of increased production was recorded from almost the entire northern and middle Adriatic with some traces even in its southern part. Some preliminary results for that period point to the fact that this was caused very likely by exceptionally warm and dry weather, with no significant precipitations and wind. Such conditions affect horizontal and vertical stratification of water masses.

High photosynthetic radiation, increased quantities of alochthonous organic matter, either in the form of particulate or dissolved organic matter, either in the form of particulate or dissolved organic carbon (POC or DOC), influx of nutrients (via rivers, municipal sewage or upwelling) are the main causes of sudden bloom and rapid reproduction rate of phytoplankton species (Diatoms) to the large quantities to which the pollution of the entire coastal area is due.  相似文献

The structure of the reproductive system in Copepodite Stages IV and V of the marine copepod Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) is described, together with seasonal variations in gonad development and sex ratio, from Balsfjorden (69°21N; 19°06E), a subarctic fjord in northern Norway. The genital system in Copepodite Stage IV consists of a small gonad with two genital ducts. The gonad of Copepodite Stage V in its most immature condition resembles that seen in Copepodite Stage IV, whereas the sex of Stage V copepodites with mature gonads can be easily and reliably determined. The genital ducts are the key characters for separating males and females in Copepodite Stage V; potential males have one and potential females two genital ducts connecting the gonad to the genital opening on the first urosome segment. Adults males were rare compared to females, and were only in the majority at the end of January and beginning of February. The sex-ratio also favoured females in Copepodite Stage V. Seasonal peaks in the proportion of adult males reflected peaks of males in Copepodite Stage V, suggesting that seasonal variations in the adult sex-ratio are a direct result of a situation which has already been determined in Copepodite Stage V. The seasonal variation in gonad development in Copepodite Stages IV and V of C. finmarchicus reveals that the size of maturity of the gonad varies throughout the year. This study indicates that visible sex-differentiation in Stage V and moulting into adults occurs in Balsfjorden at least 2 months before spawning in April. Phytoplankton levels are immeasurable before the spring diatom increase starts at the end of March, implying that development and maturation of gonads are dependent upon internal energy resources, whereas the final act of spawning seems to require energy input from phytoplankton.  相似文献

Two abundant macrozooplankters, Oikopleura vanhoeffeni (Lohmann) and Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) were collected from the coastal waters off Newfoundland in different seasons during 1990–1991 and incubated in natural seawater to collect freshly egested, field produced, fecal pellets. The densities of fecal pellets from O. vanhoeffeni and C. finmarchicus were measured in an isosmotic density gradient. These are the first reported seasonal measurements of fecal pellet densities from two different types of macrozooplankters, O. vanhoeffeni, a larvacean, filter feeder and C. finmarchicus, a crustacean, suspension feeder. Pellet density ranges and medians were significantly different among seasons for both species, depending primarily on the type of phytoplankton ingested and its ability to be compacted. Winter O. vanhoeffeni and fall C. finmarchicus feces filled with nanoplankters and soft bodied organisms had less open space [packing index (% open area) = 3.5 and 4% for O. vanhoeffeni and C. finmarchicus, respectively] and were more dense (1.23 and 1.19 g cm-3) than spring feces filled with diatoms (packing index = 15 and 23%, density = 1.13 and 1.11 gcm-3). For copepods, these results contrast with previously published density values and with the predicted copepod fecal pellet density calculated, in the present study, using the conventional mass/volume relationship. Copepod spring and summer diatom-filled feces had a calculated density of 1.12 and 1.24 gcm-3 vs a measured median density of 1.11 gcm-3 for both spring and summer feces; the fall feces containing nanoplankters had a calculated density of 1.08 gcm-3 vs a measured median density of 1.19 gcm-3. Knowledge of the seasonal variations in fecal pellet densities is important for the development of flux models.  相似文献
