The sperm of Acanthodoris pilosa were examined in fresh preparations, histochemically stained samples, electronmicroscope sections, and in paraffin sections of the whole reproductive mass. Sperm are morphologically the same in the ampulla (vas deferens) and the spermatotheca and spermatocyst (bursae for sperm received during copulation). The electron micrographs show sperm with a long spiralled, fibrous, nuclear head with non-fibrous tongue-like acrosome. The tail, attached directly to the posterior of the head, has a 9+2 filamentous arrangement surrounded by a spiralled sheath which contains mitochondria and granular thread running the length of the tail. The thin-walled ampulla contains non-motile sperm and no energy sources such as polysaccharides and lipids. The bursae hold motile sperm and, with histochemical stains, were shown to contain polysaccharide droplets in walls and lumen. The lack of self-fertilization in nudibranchs appears to be associated with a physiological immaturity of the sperm in the hermaphroditic duct, where egg and sperm meet as they leave the ovotestis.  相似文献

Sperm competition occurs when the sperm of two or more males compete to fertilize the egg/s of a particular female. Males of some species respond to a high risk of sperm competition by increasing the number of sperm in their ejaculates. Males may accomplish such a response by increasing the intensity or duration of contraction of the cauda epididymidis and vas deferens. During emission (first phase of the ejaculatory process), the vas deferens receives sperm from the cauda epididymidis and propels the sperm to the urethra. In this paper, we tested the hypothesis that males exposed to a high risk of sperm competition mobilize larger numbers of sperm from the cauda epididymidis to the vas deferens before initiation of copulatory behavior. This accumulation of sperm in the vas deferens would result in a larger number of sperm in the ejaculate. To test this hypothesis, we exposed male meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, to either low or high risks of sperm competition using soiled bedding of conspecific individuals. At three different times after this exposure (15, 30, or 60 min), we removed both vasa deferentia and counted the sperm within them. We found a significant increase in sperm numbers in the vas deferens of males after 30 min of being exposed to a high risk of sperm competition. The lower sperm numbers after 15 and 60 min of exposure suggest that the observed response is relatively slow and that sperm mobilized to the vasa deferentia may return to the cauda epididymides if ejaculation does not occur some time after the observed response. Our results indicate that the physiological response that may result in high sperm numbers in the ejaculate in relation to high risk of sperm competition can occur before initiation of copulatory behavior.  相似文献

In the spiny lobster Panulirus homarus (Linnaeus) the spermatophoric mass consists of a highly convoluted tube, containing the sperm mass and a gelatinous matrix. The spermatophoric components have their origin in the proximal vas deferens and the completed spermatophoric mass is stored within the distal dilated part of the vas deferens. In the proximal vas deferens the inner glandular epithelial cells give rise to leaf-like typhlosoles which gradually diminish in size and finally disappear in the distal vas deferens. The secretions originating from the typhlosole form the outer gelatinous matrix of the spermatophoric mass. Histochemical observations reveal that the wall of the spermatophore tube consists of neutral mucopolysaccharide, whereas the sperm mass and the gelatinous matrix are rich in acidic mucopolysaccharides. Both polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and agarose gel electrophoresis were used to separate the acidic mucopolysaccharide (AMPS) complexed with the proteins and the simple proteins. In addition, AMPS have been isolated following the method of Rahemtulla and Lovtrup (1974) and used for electrophoresis. In both the polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and agarose gel electrophoresis, the extracted acid mucopolysaccharides give only a single fraction which, in comparison with the standard acid mucopolysaccharides, corresponds to chondroitin sulphate. The functional significance of the chondroitin sulphate and neutral mucopolysaccharides in the spermatophoric components of P. homarus is discussed in relation to their functional role in spermatophore hardening and protection of the delicate spermatozoa during their prolonged storage on the sternum of the female.  相似文献

Male swiss mice were administered with the leaf extract of Thespesia populnea at a daily dose of 400 mg/kg body weight for 15 days and the testis were subjected to structural analysis. The structure of the seminiferous tubule in the testis of treated animal was elongated. Sertoli cells were enlarged in its structure and spermatids became round and disintegrated. It is suggested that the extract of T. populnea treatment leads to pathological changes in the seminiferous tubules, Sertoli cells and spermatids of the testis.  相似文献

A single population of short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis Linnaeus) occurs in the western North Atlantic from Florida to Newfoundland. Dolphins killed in a swordfish driftnet fishery between 1989 and 1998 provided samples for the present study. These were combined with additional observations from carcasses collected from stranding programs. Samples were examined from 74 female and 161 male short-beaked common dolphins. A highly significant male bias in the sex ratio of both the bycatch and stranding samples suggests that sex-based habitat partitioning or school segregation occurs in this population. Age was estimated from decalcified thin sections of teeth and testis and ovarian samples were examined both macro- and microscopically. Analyses showed that reproduction was both seasonal and synchronized. Females reached sexual maturation at approximately age eight; males matured at 9.5 years. Conception occurred during July and August (mean day 24 July). Gestation was estimated to last just under a year, so most females gave birth during July and August (mean day 15 July). Annual pregnancy rate was estimated to be between 25 and 33%. Males undergo a fivefold seasonal increase in testes mass and a twofold increase in seminiferous tubule diameter. Peak sperm production potential was observed in July. At the end of the breeding season testis size and activity decreased after August. Male dolphins in this population are hypothesized to engage in some form of sperm competition.  相似文献

Boswellia papyrifera and Boswellia carterii released from smoke contaminate indoor environment and consequently adversely affect humans as evidenced by respiratory disturbances. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of these plants on pathological and biochemical changes in vas deferens of albino rats. Animals were administered 4 g/kg body weight B. papyrifera and B. carterii daily for 120 days along with controls. Significant changes were observed in epithelial cell types and some cells showed signs of degeneration. The ultrastructural studies revealed marked changes in cytoplasmic organelles. Microvilli were missing and lysosomes were found in the cytoplasm. In addition, all treated groups plasma fructose and other biochemical parameters were decreased indicating reduced energy necessary for motility and contractility of spermatozoa. Many spermatozoa were disorganized and agglomerated. Data suggest that smoke from these plants adversely affects vas deferens.  相似文献

Light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to describe spermatogenesis and the morphology of mature sperm and sperm storage organs in five sibling species of Capitella, three species in the related genus Capitomastus, and one species in the genus Capitellides. These capitellids lack a well-developed testis, but young males have a few specialized regions of the peritoneum in the eighth setiger, where germ cells proliferate and spermatogonia are released into the coelom, and spermiogenesis is completed. Mature sperm are stored in the central regions of paired genital ducts (coelomoducts), which lie between the seventh and eighth setigers. The cells forming the walls of the coelomostome and central region of the duct are ciliated and have large glycogen deposits. The lumenal borders have extensive microvilli and there is evidence that they secrete glycogen-containing materials into the duct. All species have modified primitive sperm with a conical acrosome, elongated nucleus, and long middle piece extending along the proximal portion of the flagellum. A single ring-shaped mitochondrion encircles the centriolar region of the middle piece and the cytoplasm is filled with glycogen. The sperm of all nine species differ significantly in the lengths of their middle pieces, acrosomes and especially in their nuclear lengths. The nuclear lengths have a twofold range among the sibling species of Capitella and Capitomastus. Subtle differences in the shape and volume of the acrosomal vesicle and acrosomal space characteristic of the Capitella sibling species seem to correlate with a basic division of these species into those with diploid chromosome numbers of 20 or 26. Spermiogenesis, the number of sperm produced, and the method of sperm storage are appropriate for efficient sperm utilization in fertilization. No evidence indicates that spermatophores are formed and transferred between individuals and the method of sperm transfer is not understood. The differences in the dimensions and acrosome morphology of mature sperm, and the previously demonstrated specializations in the egg envelopes in the Capitella sibling species, are characteristic features of the reproductive isolation that exists among these capitellid species.  相似文献

The chronic effects low-dose 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) were examined on protein expression profiles in rat testis, sperm, and serum gonadal hormones. A total of 32 male rats were randomly divided into three TCDD-exposed groups, administered either 140, 350, or 875 ng TCDD/kg/week for 29 weeks, respectively, and one control group receiving only corn oil. The proteins from rat testis were separated and analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry. TCDD induced significant decreases in sperm counts and serum gonadal hormone levels compared with controls. TCDD altered testicular protein expression levels. Several interesting volume-altered proteins that were related to the reproductive toxicities or other toxicities of TCDD were identified. Among these proteins, PERF15 was the only down-regulated protein; sperm protein SSP411, ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase L-3, and eukaryotic translation elongation factor 1 gamma were up-regulated by TCDD. The differentially expressed proteins and other data provide further insight into the mechanisms of reproductive toxicity mediated by low-dose TCDD exposure.  相似文献

Sperm competition should select for increased sperm production if the probability of fertilization by a specific male is proportional to the relative number of sperm inseminated. A review of the literature generally supports the predicted positive association between sperm production or allocation and various measures of the presumed intensity of sperm competition. However, it is not clear how increased sperm competition is related to extra-pair paternity, and it remains unknown whether certainty of paternity should be associated with relative testis size. Based on a large sample of bird species with information on extra-pair paternity gathered from the literature, we demonstrate that testis mass is related positively to the level of extra-pair paternity, after controlling for body size and phylogeny. Although large testes may be necessary to avoid sperm depletion in species in which males frequently engage in multi-pair copulations, we argue that selection has favoured increased testis mass in situations of more intense sperm competition in order to retaliate against copulations by rival males. The fact the males are not always successful in retaliating against rival ejaculates further suggests that females may largely control the allocation of paternity in birds and that increased sperm production by males may simply be a male strategy to make the best of a bad situation.  相似文献

Specimens from the prosobranch Hinia reticulata collected along the coast of Brittany and Normandy from 1988 to 1991 exhibited imposex (occurrence of male parts in addition to the female genital duct) in response to tributyltin (TBT) pollution. Four stages of imposex development (1 to 4) with two different types in the Stages 1, 3 and 4 could be distinguished and have been documented with scanning electron micrographs for the first time. Furthermore, three additional alterations of the genital tract are shown. Neither TBT-induced sterilization nor sex change occurred. TBT accumulation in whole body and selected tissues is described and sex-related differences are shown. The VDS (vas deferens sequence) index, cubed and uncubed RPS (relative penis size) index and average female penis length of a population were analysed with regard to their quality as indices for TBT biomonitoring. Based on the way imposex develops in this species the VDS is recommended as the most valid index. Only in highly polluted areas should the uncubed RPS be used as a second index.  相似文献

Gonopod tegumental glands: a new accessory sex gland in the Brachyura   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
It is not yet known whether gonopod tegumental glands (GTG) previously described in one species of brachyuran crab (Chionoecetes opilio) are a general feature in this large taxon. In order to determine the prevalence and role of GTG in the Brachyura, the first gonopods of six species of boreo-temperate and tropical brachyurans belonging to four families were examined morphologically and histologically, using the PAS–Alcian-blue staining protocol: Carcinus maenas, Portunus sebae, and Ovalipes ocellatus (Portunidae), Cancer irroratus (Cancridae), Grapsus grapsus (Grapsidae), and Petrolisthes armatus (Porcellanidae). Discrete rosette-type GTG were found in all species examined, although the longitudinal extent and location differed somewhat between taxa. The GTG were invariably grouped about the ejaculatory canal, and communicated with the lumen of the ejaculatory canal via ducts which traversed pores in the cuticle; staining properties of secretions at the duct openings to the ejaculatory canal matched those of the GTG. Neither GTG, ducts, nor pores were observed in regions distal to the ejaculatory canal. These data indicate that the prime, if not exclusive, role of the GTG is in reproduction, and that GTG may therefore be considered accessory sex glands. Together with previous and current investigations such GTG have been observed in all eight brachyuran species examined from five families, and are thus probably ubiquitous within the Brachyura. The organization and nature of the gland secretions differed between taxa: alternating acid (AMPS) and neutral mucopolysaccharide (NMPS) layers in the three Portunidae, AMPS only in Cancer irroratus, and NMPS only in Grapsus grapsus and Petrolisthes armatus. When combined with data on gonopod morphology and occurrence of spermatophore-less sealant in the ejaculate of various brachyurans, two plausible functions of the AMPS GTG secretions emerge: protection of the male's genetic investment (stored spermatophores) from opportunistic microbes following copulation, and the reciprocal processes of sperm competition and paternity assurance. The NMPS secretions may function as a lubricant to reduce mechanical wear of the ejaculatory canal by the second gonopod during copulation, and to reduce the viscosity of the ejaculate from the vas deferens as it enters the narrow ejaculatory canal. The androgenic gland of Palaemon dayanus Henderson differs in morphology and anatomy from that of all other known natantian decapods. The gland is attached to the distal extremity of the was deferens as a thin, plate-like structure made up of numerous parallel strands in close juxtaposition. The gland is clearly separated by intervening thick muscle bands from the epithelium of the vas deferens. The structure of the gland shows distinct zones of activity such as growth and degenerating zones. The presence of degenerating zones together with zones of activity in the same gland at the same time is attributed to a holocrine mode of secretion in the androgenic gland.  相似文献

The morphological expressions of imposex in gastropods have been classified into seven stages (S0–S6) with three types (a, b and c). This typical imposex scheme, however, fails to cover some new findings such as specimens with the proximal vas deferens section passing by the vaginal opening (VDSP) and aborted egg capsules. In the present study, Cantharus cecillei was sampled from the coastal waters of China from May to November in 2003. This species showed all the morphological expressions in the typical imposex scheme with the exception of S1b and S2b. In addition, specimens with VDSP occurred in all stages other than stage 4, and were documented for the first time with scanning electron micrographs or in histological sections. Besides VDSP, which was observed exteriorly, excrescent tissue, e.g. the vas deferens, also originated in the ventral channel or the inner wall of the pallial oviduct was extruded. Based on these new findings, the typical imposex scheme was modified to obtain one valid for C. cecillei. Types a*, b* and c* were added as new types corresponding to types a, b and c, respectively. S4* was also rearranged to correspond to S4; S4*, thus, no longer represented the end of imposex development. The updated scheme was not only valid for describing diverse expressions of imposex development in C. cecillei and Nassarius reticulatus, but could also be generalized to define various forms of VDSP in other species. Histological observation indicated that egg capsules would be blocked by the tissues of the vas deferens section or the extrusion of the pallial oviduct wall. This new mechanism, leading to the sterilization of imposex-affected females, was first conclusively revealed and described in the present scheme.Communicated by T. Ikeda, Hakodate  相似文献

Imposex (the occurrence of penis and vas deferens in females) in Hexaplex trunculus collected from Malta (Central Mediterranean) in 1992 is reported. This phenomenon is related to the levels of tributyltin (TBT) in the organisms as well as in sediments. Imposex indices (relative penis size and vas deferens sequence) are used to biomonitor coastal contamination by TBT for the first time in the Mediterranean. In its response to TBT, H. trunculus is ranked as one of the most sensitive neogastropod species studied so far. Accumulation of TBT and its metabolites in the digestive glands, gonads and the rest of the body are described, and sex-related differences are shown. No preferential female mortalities are recorded in populations exposed to high levels of TBT. However, a reported shift in the size frequency distribution of H. trunculus in contaminated sites, towards bigger snails, may suggest reduced reproductive potential.  相似文献

Impaired testicular function was observed after an exposure of Swiss albino mice (30 +/- 2 g) to mercuric chloride. A sublethal chronic exposure (0.5 ppm for 21 days) resulted in regressed histological and histochemical properties of the testis. The changes observed were degenerated tunica albuginea, abnormal configurations of seminiferous tubules, deformed primary and secondary spermatocytes, hypertrophy and vacuolization in interstitial cells and Sertoli cells. The 3 beta and 17 beta hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase enzyme and the level of testosterone hormone were significantly (p < 0.001) reduced. The diameter of different spermatogenic cells were significantly (p < 0.001) reduced.  相似文献

While sperm competition may be a major factor affecting relative testis size in vertebrates as a whole, additional hypotheses have not been given much attention in frogs. This is important because sperm competition is relatively uncommon in frogs and relative testis size varies in frogs that do not have multiple-male breeding systems. This paper tests two additional hypotheses for differences in relative testis size among frogs: relative clutch size (number of eggs/snout vent length) and androgen level. Testis size was measured in 90 species of frogs belonging to five families. Relative testis size was found to be positively correlated with relative clutch size in species that lack sperm competition. Mean androgen levels of species also positively covaried with relative testis size. However, there was no correlation between relative testis size and level of male agonistic behavior among species, despite other work indicating that testosterone levels are positively correlated with agonistic behavior in at least some species. These findings suggest that a number of factors in addition to sperm competition are important in the evolution of testis size in male frogs. We investigated male assessment of sperm competition in the bitterling, Rhodeus sericeus, a freshwater fish that spawns on the gills of living unionid mussels. Field experiments showed males increased their inspection rate of mussels into which a testis solution containing sperm had been experimentally released. Males avoided leading females to mussels that contained high numbers of embryos, but did not alter their leading behavior in response to the presence of sperm. In laboratory experiments males also increased their inspection rate of mussels into which a testis solution had been released and also failed to alter their leading behavior in response to the presence of sperm in mussels. However, males avoided leading females to mussels in close proximity to other males, and thereby may avoid sperm competition. In a second field study, territorial males were shown to ejaculate into mussels at a low rate in the absence of competitors, increase the frequency of ejaculations in competition with a rival, then decrease relative ejaculate expenditure as the number of competing males increased. Observed data were shown to be significantly correlated with predicted estimates of ejaculate expenditure for a model of sperm competition intensity. We discuss our results in the context of adaptive responses of males to sperm competition.  相似文献
