The fish fauna in 22 limed and seven unlimed small streams was monitored using yearly electrofishing to assess the effects of liming on species occurrence and abundance. The liming techniques were divided into three main methods, lake liming, doser liming and wetland liming, to evaluate whether different strategies had different effects on the fish fauna. The predominant species at the investigated stations were salmonids, mainly brown trout (Salmo trutta) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Other species generally occurred in low numbers. The average number of fish species did not increase significantly after liming, which was probably due to recolonization difficulties caused by the frequent occurrence of migration obstacles in the streams. After liming the density of salmonids increased significantly, irrespective of the liming method. Other fish species showed no general increase, but in individual streams significant increases of European minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) and bullhead (Cottus gobio) occurred. Some unlimed streams had acid spates with a pH below 6, which immediately lowered the numbers of salmonid parr. Other unlimed streams lost fish species progressively due to increasing acidification. pH, and probably increased levels of metals, were the major factors regulating the fish fauna. Few examples of biotic interactions were observed, but with an increase of Atlantic salmon parr after liming, brown trout abundances decreased in three streams.  相似文献

Bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) and caddis flies (Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae) were collected from a stream receiving fly ash discharge and nearby reference streams to determine tissue levels of selenium (Se) and other metals, and compare these levels to published "no effect" thresholds. Stingy Run samples contained elevated levels of several metals. Mean Se concentrations in bullhead minnow whole body, bluegill whole body, bluegill ovary, and testes tissues were 44.6, 17.3, 32.5, and 37.1 microg/g (dry wt), respectively. These levels were 2-3 times higher than proposed toxic thresholds for fish whole body (7.9 microg/g) and ovary (17 microg/g). Although monitoring indicated a persistent bluegill population, some reproductive impairment may have occurred. Tissue residue data should be treated with caution because feral fish may accumulate several metals. In Stingy Run, persistence of a bluegill population may be explained by antagonistic interactions with other metals that were also elevated in the fish.  相似文献

Previous studies relating forest presence to stream acidity and aluminium concentration were based on small numbers of catchments, often precluding the elimination of confounding influences on stream chemistry, such as geology or soil type. Spatial patterns in aluminium and pH data from 113 Welsh catchments of contrasting land use were therefore analysed in three different ranges of acid sensitivity (< 10, 10-15, 15-25 mg CaCO(3) litre(-1) total hardness). In each range, pH declined and aluminium increased significantly with increasing percentage forest cover. There was no evidence that the relationships reflected a spurious effect of forest location. Where aluminium concentrations were elevated under forest in a sub-set of 13 streams, aluminium was present predominantly in the labile form, most toxic to fish. Regressions of pH and aluminium on percentage forest cover provide a useful method of assessing the amount of forest in Welsh catchments which might give rise to given chemical conditions (e.g. pH <6, Al > 80 microg litre(-1)), though some difficulties are likely in accurately specifying the conditions desirable for fish or other biota.  相似文献

Laboratory data on ammonia effects, the US EPA national water quality criteria for ammonia, and ammonia site-specific criteria were evaluated in four outdoor experimental streams (one control and three treatment streams) over a 76-week period. Calculated un-ionised ammonia concentrations varied daily and seasonally according to pH and temperature changes. Populations of four major microinvertebrate taxonomic groups (cladocerans, copepods, rotifers and protozoans) were monitored during a 4-week period early in the study, and six fish species (fathead minnows, bluegills, channel catfish, white suckers, walleyes, and rainbow trout) were tested for various time intervals, from 4 to 26 weeks, throughout the 76-week study period. Copepods and rotifers were unaffected in all three treatment streams, based on comparisons with the control stream. Cladoceran and protozoan populations were reduced in at least two treatment streams, but because of large variability, effects were considered to be inconclusive. However, complete mortality of cladocerans did occur in the high and medium treatments when placed in in situ biomonitor chambers. All six fish species were affected in one or more treatments. Generally, the fish effect values agreed with most laboratory effect values. Of 12 fish groups tested, one channel catfish group and one white sucker group were affected below the recommended protection levels of the national and site-specific criteria. The lowest effect concentrations tested for the other ten groups occurred above the criteria levels.  相似文献

The development of brown trout (Salmo trutta f. fario L.) in water of two differently polluted streams and in a control situation was monitored in order to get insights into the impact of anthropogenic chemical stressors on the reproductive success of this fish species indigenous to both streams. The test streams, situated in the south of Stuttgart, Germany, were the complexly polluted K?rsch stream and the less polluted Kr?henbach stream. Bypass systems connected to the streams and a laboratory control system were used for continuous exposure of early brown trout stages shortly after fertilisation up to the end of the embryonic development. Temperature and oxygen conditions were standardised in all test series in order to minimise unspecific effects. The examined endpoints were: (1) mortality, (2) developmental rate, (3) time course of hatching, (4) malformations, and (5) growth. A retarded development, reduced growth rates and higher mortality rates of K?rsch stream water exposed embryos indicated an embryotoxic potential for the more polluted stream. High infection-related mortality rates of embryos suggested the presence of confounding factors also in the less polluted Kr?henbach stream. In parallel to the exposure experiment, physicochemical and limnochemical parameters as well as concentrations of organic contaminants and heavy metals were monitored. Analytical data confirm the different degrees of pollution of both streams.  相似文献

Land use is known to alter the nature of land–water interactions, but the potential effects of widespread forest management on headwaters in boreal regions remain poorly understood. We evaluated the importance of catchment land use, land cover, and local stream variables for macroinvertebrate community and functional trait diversity in 18 boreal headwater streams. Variation in macroinvertebrate metrics was often best explained by in-stream variables, primarily water chemistry (e.g. pH). However, variation in stream variables was, in turn, significantly associated with catchment-scale forestry land use. More specifically, streams running through catchments that were dominated by young (11–50 years) forests had higher pH, greater organic matter standing stock, higher abundance of aquatic moss, and the highest macroinvertebrate diversity, compared to streams running through recently clear-cut and old forests. This indicates that catchment-scale forest management can modify in-stream habitat conditions with effects on stream macroinvertebrate communities and that characteristics of younger forests may promote conditions that benefit headwater biodiversity.  相似文献

Indicator species (IS) have been employed in modern aquatic research for monitoring of environmental changes and evaluating the efficiency of environmental management procedures. In this study, we evaluated the possibility of developing surrogate indicator groups as tools for the conservation and management of the biodiversity of Northern Nigeria streams by surveying 15 streams in Niger state for benthic macroinvertebrates and environmental variables as data sets, over a period of 24 months (2016 and 2017). Samples were collected in two locations of reference and impacted sites for each of the streams surveyed. The statistically significant (P < 0.05; based on 1000 permutations) indicator species for each of the status classes (reference versus impacted) was identified using the indicator species analysis/indicator value (Indval) method. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to evaluate the IS-environment relationships. Indicator value found fifteen species for the reference streams including Ephemeropteran (Bugilliesia sp., Tricorythus sp., Thraulus sp., Crassabwa sp.) and the Tricopteran (Leptonema sp.). Opposite, the Indval found seven (7) indicator species for the impacted streams, which included the Dipteran (Pentaneura sp., Tabanus sp.). Multivariate analysis revealed that species assemblage had wide dispersal patterns in relation to the sites for both status classes. CCA revealed that the reference and impacted indicator species responded to entirely different environmental factors, indicating their preference to particular environmental variables along the ecological gradients. While the indicator species of reference sites were associated with environmental predictors of good water quality such as high DO, increased flow, low conductivity, and low BOD, the indicator species of impacted sites were strongly related to environmental predictors of anthropogenic pollution, including low DO, high BOD, and increased nutrients concentrations. This study has provided a reference point and effective tool to monitor environmental changes, community, and ecosystem dynamics across the Northern Nigeria streams.

We investigated, by field and laboratory experiments, the effects of aluminium in an acid stream (pH 5.0) on the growth and sporulation of aquatic hyphomycete fungi which degrade organic litter. The stream water had monomeric aluminium (Al(m)) concentrations of 9.1-13.4 microm - fifty times higher than a nearby circumneutral stream. Alder leaves submersed in the stream accumulated Al, most of which was tightly bound. Growth rates of four species of aquatic hyphomycetes were altered by inclusion of Al(m) in the culture medium. On a polypectate substrate, and on low-phosphate medium with glucose, growth rates increased significantly. On a low-nutrient substrate of homogenized alder leaves, growth rates were inhibited by aluminium. The pattern of mycelial growth was found to be different on a polypectate medium including Al(m), compared with a control without aluminium. There was a significant increase in hyphal radial growth and a decrease in the hyphal growth unit. The effect resembled the growth of a starved fungal colony. Treatment with Al(m) decreased pectinase production by the four fungal species tested. The capacity of these species to sporulate was reduced by flooding culture plates with Al(m) solution. These deleterious metabolic effects were most severe in isolates taken from circumneutral streams and less marked, though significant, in species originating from acid streams.  相似文献

The present study focuses on the relative sensitivity among freshwater fish species to aqueous aluminium. Seven common Scandinavian fish species were exposed to acidic Al-rich water, acidic Al-poor water, and approximately neutral water as a control. The relative sensitivity among the species to an acute aluminium challenge was documented, and was in the following order: Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, as the most sensitive; then roach, Rutilus rutilus; minnow, Phoxinus phoxinus; perch, Perca fluviatilis; grayling, Thymallus thymallus; brown trout, Salmo trutta; and Arctic char, Salvelinus alpinus. Substantial mortality was observed in all species when exposed to the Al-rich medium. Some mortality was also observed in minnow, roach, and brown trout exposed to the acidic Al-poor medium and the control medium. A high resistance to aluminium was observed in Arctic char, while perch was found to be more sensitive to aluminium than expected and, for the first time, a toxic response to aqueous aluminium in grayling was documented. Through controlled experimental studies, the results confirm that aluminium is an important factor in the toxicity of acidified waters to freshwater fish species.  相似文献

Five streams were studied on the Northern Appalachian Plateau of Pennsylvania from October 1988 through June 1989 to determine chemical changes that occur during episodic storm run-off and the responses of fish to these events. These second-order streams flowed through undisturbed, wooded, sandstone bedrock catchments with surface areas ranging from 500 to 1000 hectares. Median pH of precipitations was about 4.2, and among streams it ranged from 5.0 to 6.2. During storm events, pH declined by as much as 1.2 units and peak concentrations of total monomeric Al ranged from < 0.01 to 0.75 mg litre(-1). Organically bound A1 was generally a minor component of total monomeric A1. Wild brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) were found in all streams, although only a remnant population existed in the most acidic stream. Sculpins (Cottus bairdi or C. cognatus) were collected only in the two streams with the least severe episodes. Mortality of brook trout and sculpins in in situ bioassays ranged from 0 to about 80% among streams during acidic episodes and was positively related to concentrations of total dissolved Al. Radio-tagged brook trout moved downstream during episodes when Al reached toxic concentrations. Some displaced trout were found near groundwater seeps, where pH was higher and dissolved Al was lower than in the main channel.  相似文献

Concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn) were measured in water, bottom sediment and tissues (muscle and gills) of Leuciscus cephalus from the Dipsiz stream in the Yatagan basin (southwestern Turkey), the site of a thermal power plant. Results for levels in water were compared with national and international water quality guidelines, as well as literature values were reported for streams and rivers. Comparisons were made of metal concentrations in water and sediment with those in the muscle and gills of L. cephalus caught from the Dipsiz stream. We found that there was metal accumulation in the gills compared to the muscle. Concentrations of Cd, Pb, Zn and Cr in the gills were higher than that in the muscle; however, Cu levels were higher in muscle than that in gills. Concentrations of heavy metals in L. cephalus muscle were below the legal limits for human consumption, although Cr, Pb and Zn levels in the gills were above the limits in the fish taken from the Dipsiz stream. On the other hand, no correlation was found between metal concentrations in water and sediment or between metal concentrations in water and muscle and gills of L. cephalus. A positive correlation was found between concentrations of Cu and Zn in the sediment and in fish tissue, whereas there was no relationship between other metal concentrations in the sediment and water, and muscle and gills of L. cephalus. As with water, Pb and Cd concentrations in particular were higher in sediment than that in background levels. The results show that the pollutants from the thermal power plant may be a source of these elements.  相似文献

Flood plains can make a significant contribution to food security due to their rich agricultural and aquaculture potentials but the misuse of pesticides in these ecosystems may seriously threaten their sustainability. We have assessed the risk of commonly used pesticides by rice and vegetable farmers on two major streams in the Ndop flood plain in Cameroon using the PRIMET model. Thirty pesticide formulations were identified containing 17 active ingredients belonging to fungicides (7), herbicides (3), and insecticides (7). Out of these, five posed acute and/or chronic risks to the streams. Chlorpyriphos-ethyl (ETR = 655), chlorothalonil (ETR = 250), and cypermethrin (ETR = 190) posed a definite acute risk to both streams. These pesticides also posed possible chronic risks with cypermethrin also posing a definite chronic risk (ETR = 1658) to fish in one of the streams. Mancozeb (ETR = 2.2) and λ-cyhalothrin (ETR = 2.8) posed a possible acute risk to both streams. It was interesting to note that most pesticides, including some of those that posed a risk, were applied at lower doses than their respective recommended doses. Differences in ETRs were also observed in the two streams with higher values occurring in the stream having a lower concentration of suspended solids. The higher velocity of the Ngwala-Mesaw stream did not affect the acute risk posed by pesticides. Pesticide toxicity was an important determinant in the risk posed and we recommend that appropriate mitigation measures be put in place to reduce the risk of these pesticides such as the implementation of an appropriate buffer zone between the edge of field and water body.

Due to the wide occurrence of endocrine disrupting chemicals in the environment, it is much of importance to develop high throughput screening method for the analysis of this kind of pollutants. Using anion-exchange membrane chromatography, vitellogenin (VTG) from the plasma of 17β-estradiol (E2) treated Chinese rare minnow was rapidly purified within 15 min. Both polyclonal antibody (PcAb) and monoclonal antibody (McAb) against rare minnow VTG (R-VTG) were prepared in rabbit and Balb/c mice, respectively. The competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) based on either PcAb or McAb were developed to identify and quantify R-VTG in the plasma, and these two methods showed similar characteristics. The detection limits of both assays were lower than 3 ng mL−1 with the working ranges covering three magnitudes. The recovery efficiencies of PcAb and McAb based ELISA were 104.2% and 102.6%, respectively; and the intra-assay and inter-assay of these two assays were 6.2% and 9.2%, 8.6% and 12.8%, respectively. These results indicated that the described competitive ELISA methods were sensitive and valuable tools for quantifying vitellogenin in rare minnow plasma. These methods were then applied to measure R-VTG concentrations in plasma of male fish exposed to a series of E2 concentrations. When E2 levels were less than 10 ng L−1, R-VTG levels in plasma were comparable to that in solvent control, while R-VTG levels significantly increased 15-folds and 350-folds, respectively when E2 exposure concentrations were controlled at 10 and 50 ng L−1. The high sensitivity of Chinese rare minnow to E2 was demonstrated, making it a valuable model species to study environmental estrogens.  相似文献

The cyclic siloxane decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) is a high production volume chemical which has recently been assessed under the Canadian Chemicals Management Plan (CMP). Cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (cVMS) are one of the challenge substances in the CMP batches. To provide toxicity and growth information on a species of relevance to the Canadian environment, we assessed D5 in a fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) embryo to young adult assay. The test was 65 d in length, and exposed fathead minnow eggs to juveniles until near maturity (60 d post-hatch). The D5 concentrations in flow-through fish exposure aquaria were about one-third of nominal D5 concentrations. Fathead minnows were exposed to 0.25, 0.82, 1.7, 3.6, and 8.7 μg L−1 D5. During the exposure of fathead minnows to D5 there were few effects seen. Egg hatching and larval fish survival and growth were normal. Juvenile fish survival and growth were good in all environmentally-relevant concentrations of D5, and were similar to control fish. The two highest D5 concentrations (8.7 μg L−1 and 3.6 μg L−1, mean measured D5) increased the condition factors of fathead minnows compared to water control and DMSO control fish. Although there were few effects of D5 in our fathead minnow study, the compound was taken up and stored in fish bodies over the 65-d exposure. The bioconcentration factor for D5 in fathead minnows was 4450, for the lowest environmentally-relevant D5 exposure water concentrations, and 4920 for all D5 exposure concentrations tested.  相似文献

Declining sulphur deposition since the late 1970s has led to increases in pH in lakes and streams of the English Lake District (Cumbria, UK). To determine whether there have been biological responses to the chemical changes, we carried out surveys of stream macroinvertebrates and lake surface sediment diatoms, and compared the results with those from earlier surveys. Macroinvertebrate taxa in five streams (current average pH range 5.1-7.0) sampled in 1999 showed clear changes from those found during 1965/1966 and 1972. For three of the streams, more taxa were present in 1999 than recorded using comparable sampling methods in the 1960s and 1970s, despite lower numbers of individuals being recovered in 1999. Values of the Margalef diversity index could be calculated for both 1965-1972 and 1999 for four of the streams; the index was significantly greater in 1999 (P < 0.001) in three streams, and unchanged in one stream (the most acid). The 1999 survey revealed the presence of acid-sensitive taxa that had been absent in the earlier surveys, notably the three stoneflies Leuctra fusca, L. moselyi and Chloroperla tripunctata. Some taxa that had been present during 1965-1972 were absent in 1999, but few of these were acid-sensitive. Diatoms from the surface sediments of six lakes were classified according to their acid sensitivities. In three of the lakes sampled in 1999 there were more diatoms characteristic of circumneutral waters, and less acidophilic species than had been found in 1983-1985. In the remaining three lakes, no noticeable changes had occurred. Overall, the observed biological changes are qualitatively as expected for the observed increases in pH, and there have been no instances of biological change in the opposite direction. The results support the expectation that changes in freshwater ecological status can be reversed by decreasing the remote emissions of acidifying pollutants.  相似文献

We investigated the integrity of fish assemblages of a small anthropogenically impacted urban stream system in south-western Germany. Heavy point and non-point pollution physiologically stresses the aquatic fauna while migration barriers and river morphological alterations negatively influence habitat availability. Investigations conducted in 1998 and 1999 revealed that the fish assemblage was altered and several site-specific fish species were missing while non-site-specific species were relatively common. Highest species diversity was recorded in a reach downstream of the main migration barrier, while upstream only a few species were present. In general, a shift to ubiquitous and limnophilic species as well as to less pollution sensitive species was observed. Adult fish dominated the population structure throughout the stream course. Recruitment was confined mainly to the less polluted headwater. In the present study we introduce an assessment system based on the similarity of the potential natural and the actually established fish assemblage as demanded by the Water Framework Directive of the European Union for the evaluation of the ecological status of a fish assemblage in a stream [EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of Europe establishing a framework for community action in the field of water policy. Studies on impacts of air pollutants on vegetation have focused primarily on individual pollutants: ozone, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. The impacts of pollutant combinations have not been extensively studied and there has been no concerted effort to ensure that experimental regimes for combined pollutant exposures are representative of ambient pollutant concentration, frequency, duration and time intervals between events. Most studies concerning the impact of pollutant combinations on vegetation have used concentrations of 0.05 ppm and greater. Therefore, co-occurrence was defined as the simultaneous occurrence of hourly averaged concentrations of 0.05 ppm or greater for pollutant pairs (SO2/NO2, O3/SO2, or O3/NO2). Air quality information from three data bases (EPA-SAROAD, EPRI-SURE and TVA) was analyzed to determine the frequency of co-occurrence for pollutant pairs. Ambient air quality data representing a diverse range of monitoring sites (e.g. rural, remote, city center, urban, near urban, etc.) were used in the analysis. Results showed that at most sites (1) the co-occurrence of two-pollutant mixtures lasted only a few hours per episode, (2) the time interval between episodes was generally large (weeks, sometimes months) and (3) most studies have used more intense exposure regimes than occurred at most monitored sites. When designing vegetation experiments for assessing pollutant mixture effects, it may be desirable to give greater emphasis to sequential patterns of exposure. It is suggested that future work is required before a reliable estimate can be made of the environmental significance of pollutant mixtures on vegetation.  相似文献

We investigated the accumulation of PCB and DDT in crayfish populations in 10 streams in southern Sweden. The results were compared with an earlier study on crayfish in lakes from the same area. We found that the concentration of pollutants in crayfish did not differ between the two types of systems. Variation in body burden was higher in stream living crayfish probably because of the higher influence from pollutants deposited in the catchment area and the more dynamic transport in streams. In streams, p,p'-DDE concentrations were positively correlated to trophic status (total phosphorous) while PCB did not show any correlation with the nutrient regime. Further, mean SigmaPCB and p,p'-DDE concentrations in crayfish did not correlate in streams. We suggest that the sources of the two pollutants differ for stream living crayfish. The results indicate that crayfish in streams are affected to a higher degree to pollutants in the catchment area and the precipitation regime. In lakes, internal processes govern uptake of pollutants in crayfish.  相似文献

Hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) are now emerging ubiquitous contaminants due to their wide usage, persistence and toxicities. To investigate the bioaccumulative characteristics of HBCDs, sediments, Winkle (Littorina littorea), crucian carp (Carassius carassius) and loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) were collected from two streams near an E-waste dismantling site in China, and HBCD exposure test was then conducted on Chinese rare minnow. The concentration of HBCDs was 14 ng g−1 dry weight in sediments, 186, 377 and 1791 ng g−1 lipid weight in winkle, crucian carp and loach, respectively. γ-HBCD was found to be the dominant diastereoisomer in the sediments (63% of total HBCDs). However, α-HBCD was selectively accumulated in the biotic samples and contributed to 77%, 63% and 63% of total HBCDs in winkle, crucian carp and loach, respectively. Moreover, an enrichment of (−)-enantiomers of α- and γ-HBCD were found in the winkle. The reverse results were observed in the crucian carp and loach. Similar observations of diastereoisomeric and enantiomeric composition were obtained in Chinese rare minnow with those found in the crucian carp and loach. These results indicate that the freshwater species from the streams are contaminated by HBCDs. α-HBCD can be selectively accumulated in organisms and the accumulative characteristics are enantioselective among species.  相似文献

Concentrations of DDTs and PCBs were determined in the zooplankton and in three different fish species (shad, whitefish and roach) collected seasonally during 2009 and 2010 in three sites in Lake Maggiore, a south-alpine lake that has been contaminated by DDT since 1996. As previously observed in 2008, even during 2009 DDTs concentrations were higher in zooplankton than in fish, probably due to the very unstable situation of the lake still influenced by local inputs. The situation changed in 2010, when all DDT compounds increased in fish to levels much higher than those measured in zooplankton. Biomagnification was statistically demonstrated for pp′DDE in all the three fish species, indicating a probable signal of recovery of the lake.Although with respect to total PCBs we observed that the contamination levels varied across time periods and across fish species, biomagnification was evident from zooplankton to fish both in 2009 and in 2010. As concern individual PCBs, biomagnification from zooplankton to all three fish species was significant for PCB 153 and PCB 138.  相似文献
