A study was under taken, under controlled laboratory conditions, to investigate the influence of non-ionizing radiation (UV-B) and an organochlorine pesticide on the growth, photosynthetic pigments, protein content and DCPIP photoreduction of a cyanobacterium Nostoc carneum. Test algae was isolated from rice field soils of Sambalpur, Western Orissa, India and grown in nitrogen free BG 11 culture medium. Culture of algae from log phase of growth was treated with 5 ppm of the insecticide, Endodhan and UV-B (20 mW m−2) for 2 h daily, separately and in combination of insecticide and UV-B radiation. Algal samples treated with UV-B and pesticide separately showed distinct inhibitory effects on growth, pigments, protein content and DCPIP reduction of the test samples. However, when pesticide treated samples were subjected to UV-B exposure, the effect showed additive as well as synergetic effect. Experiment conducted to check the ability of the organism to recover from the stress, exposed for various time periods, suggest their ability to partially recover from the stress.  相似文献

Chronic toxicity studies were conducted with an algae (Nannochloris oculata) and the cladoceran (Daphnia magna) to determine their relative sensitivities to the thiocarbamate herbicide thiobencarb (S-4-chlorobenzyl diethylthiocarbamate). Most of the algal populations were initially affected by exposure to the herbicide. Thiobencarb concentrations higher than 0.5 mg/L significantly reduced algal densities after 24-h exposure. The 24-h static EC50 in D. magna was 3.01 mg/L. The sublethal effects of 0.3, 0.37, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.5 mg/L of thiobencarb concentrations on the survival, reproduction, and growth of D. magna were monitored for 21 days. The parameters used to determined the effect of the herbicide on D. magna were mean total young per female; mean brood size; days to first brood; intrinsic rate of natural increase (r); growth; and survival. Reproduction was significantly reduced at thiobencarb concentrations of 0.30 mg/L and higher while survival was affected after exposure to 0.75 and 1.5 mg/L of the pesticide. The r value decreased with increasing concentrations of thiobencarb. Growth, as measured by body length, was depressed significantly after exposure to all herbicide concentrations tested.  相似文献

The effects of the herbicide (2,4-D) and six organophosphorus insecticides (Diazinon, Dimethoate, Fenitrothion, Malathion, Phenthoate and Quinalphos) on growth, photosynthesis and chlorophyll a synthesis of the fresh water green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (mt +) were studied. At low concentrations (1 and 5 ppm), the herbicide and all six orgnophosphorus insecticides stimulated photosynthesis of the alga. The stimulating effects on algal growth and chlorophyll a synthesis were only observed in the presence of low concentration (1 ppm) of 2,4-D and Fenitrothion, Growth, photosynthesis and chlorophyll a synthesis of the alga were inhibited in the presence of high concentrations (10, 20 and 40 ppm) of the herbicide and all the six organophosphorus insecticides. Results also indicated that the toxicities of these organophosphorus insecticides on the tested alga were dependent on their chemical structures.  相似文献

The impact of graded concentrations (5, 10, 15 and 20 mg dm(-3) of acid mordant Metomega Chrome Orange GL, a common dye used in woollen, carpet and textile industries, was studied on protein and pigment content and photosynthetic oxygen evolution in a diazotrophic cyanobacterium Nostoc muscorum. The lower concentration of 5 mg dm(-3) showed a negligible effect on protein and pigment content and photosynthetic oxygen evolution, whereas at higher concentrations a drastic decrease in the above parameters was observed. The highest concentration of 20 mg dm(-3) resulted in a decrease of protein, chlorophyll a, phycocyanin and carotenoid content by 72, 76, 54 and 17% of the control, respectively. Photosynthetic oxygen evolution also decreased by 92% of the control at this concentration of the dye.  相似文献

Metazachlor is a frequently used herbicide with concentrations in surface waters up to 100 microg L(-1). A long-term mesocosm study was performed in order to investigate effects on stream and pond communities also regarding recovery. Single metazachlor doses of 5, 20, 80, 200, and 500 microg L(-1) were given and the aquatic communities monitored for 140 days. In this paper, special attention is paid to the plankton response and the results of the entire study are summarised. Metazachlor strongly affected the stream and pond mesocosm communities at concentrations higher than 5 microg L(-1). Direct negative effects were most prominent for chlorophytes whereas diatoms and cryptophytes seemed insensitive. The effects on zooplankton were caused by changes in habitat structure due to the strong decline of macrophytes. The slow degradation of metazachlor combined with the absence of recovery in both chlorophytes and macrophytes is likely to cause long-lasting effects on aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

Changes in aerobic bacteria and autotrophic nitrifier numbers, and in respiration and nitrification in two soils treated with cinosulfuron at 42 (field rate) and 4200 microg/kg were studied after 1 and 4 weeks of incubation under laboratory conditions. Only nitrification at 1 week was slightly inhibited by the cinosulfuron treatment, even at the field rate. In vitro toxicity tests carried out in agar media on representative aerobic bacteria, fungi and Azotobacter strains isolated from the two soils, as well as on nine collection soil bacteria, showed that only a very high cinosulfuron concentration (100 mg/l) can have negative effects on the growth of a limited number of soil heterotrophic microorganisms, under conditions similar to those of soil environment. The absence of three branched-chain amino acids increased bacterial sensitivity, thus showing the importance of the chemical conditions and suggesting acetolactate synthase enzyme blockage as the toxicity mechanism. It is concluded that cinosulfuron has a negative effect on only a few aspects of the microbial community in soil ecosystems, even at concentrations higher that those currently in use.  相似文献

Biochar, a by-product of pyrolysis made from a wide array of plant biomass when producing biofuels, is a proposed soil amendment to improve soil health. This study measured herbicide sorption and efficacy when soils were treated with low (1% w/w) or high (10% w/w) amounts of biochar manufactured from different feedstocks [maize (Zea mays) stover, switchgrass (Panicum vigatum), and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa)], and treated with different post-processing techniques. Twenty-four hour batch equilibration measured sorption of 14C-labelled atrazine or 2,4-D to two soil types with and without biochar amendments. Herbicide efficacy was measured with and without biochar using speed of seed germination tests of sensitive species. Biochar amended soils sorbed more herbicide than untreated soils, with major differences due to biochar application rate but minor differences due to biochar type or post-process handling technique. Biochar presence increased the speed of seed germination compared with herbicide alone addition. These data indicate that biochar addition to soil can increase herbicide sorption and reduce efficacy. Evaluation for site-specific biochar applications may be warranted to obtain maximal benefits without compromising other agronomic practices.  相似文献

The potential of purple non-sulphur bacteria for bioremediation was assessed by investigating the ability of Rhodobacter sphaeroides strain R26.1 to grow photosynthetically in heavy metal contaminated environments. Bacterial cultures were carried out in artificially polluted media, enriched with the transition metal ions Hg2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Ni2+, Co2+, MoO4(2-), and CrO4(2-) in millimolar concentration range. For each investigated ion the effect on growth parameters was evaluated. The analysis of concentration-effect curves revealed a differentiated response, indicating that diverse mechanisms of tolerance and/or resistance are involved. Adaptation or selection procedures were not applied, leading to assess intrinsic abilities of coping with these contaminants. The microorganism proved to be highly tolerant to heavy metal exposure, especially towards Co2+, Fe2+ and MoO4(2-). In addition Ni2+ and Co2+ were found to decrease the cellular content of light harvesting complexes. A characteristic behavior was observed with mercuric ions, which produced a significant increase of the lag-phase.  相似文献

The hypothesis that exposure to a common and widely applied photosynthesis-inhibiting herbicide, metribuzin, would alter the outcome of the competitive battle between susceptible green algae (Scenedesmus obliquus) and tolerant cyanobacteria (Microcystis aeruginosa) was tested. In a long-term (17 d) experiment, Scenedesmus and Microcystis populations as well as mixtures that started with different inoculum composition (i.e. 3:1, 1:1 and 1:3 Scenedesmus:Microcystis) were grown in the absence or presence of metribuzin (100 microg l-1). In the absence of metribuzin, Scenedesmus was competitively superior and out-competed Microcystis regardless the initial composition of the mixed communities. However, this competitive outcome was reversed completely in the presence of metribuzin, where despite growth inhibition Microcystis became dominant. Hence, photosynthesis-inhibiting herbicides may not only affect algal community structure, but also provide cyanobacteria founder populations a window for dominance and thus play an important role in promoting cyanobacteria blooms.  相似文献

The Chinese Guger-Tree (Schima superba Gard et Champ var. superba) is an important harwood species in Taiwan where the ambient SO(2) concentration in some areas is high. Seedlings were raised in field chambers with and without SO(2) to determine whether this species is affected by this pollutant. After 4 weeks of exposure to 325 ppb of SO(2), the photosynthetic rate of seedlings decreased immediately. During the fumigation period, stem height growth was not inhibited, however, the stem diameter growth was reduced significantly. The dry weight of leaves was unchanged, while stem, root and total seedling weight were lower than those of control plants. Sulfhydryl groups in leaves increased by 75%, whereas they did not change in roots following SO(2) uptake. Superoxide dismutase in leaves did not change, however, peroxidase activity increased significantly. Results suggest that ambient SO(2) in some areas in Taiwan may affect the physiology and growth of the Chinese Guger-Tree.  相似文献

Nematomorpha (horsehair worms) is a poorly known group of worm-like animals similar to nematodes. Adults are free-living and reproduction takes place in freshwater environments, where preparasitic larvae undergo development. All species have a parasitic juvenil stage and infection may result in the host's death, insects being the most frequent host. Most of the life cycle occurs in freshwater environments, which are often contaminated by different pollutants. Based on the lack of information on the toxicity of herbicides to horsehair worms, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of glyphosate (technical grade and formulated product) on Chordodes nobilii (Gordiida, Nematomorpha). Bioassays were performed with embryos and larvae (preparasitic stages), and adults (postparasitic stage). Test organisms were exposed for a short period of time to concentrations ranging between 0.1 and 8 mga.e.l(-1) of glyphosate (technical and formulated). Although embryo development was not inhibited, there was a significant decrease in the infective capacity of larvae derived from eggs that had been exposed to >or= 0.1mg/l. Similar results were obtained for directly exposed larvae. No differences in toxicity were detected between the active ingredient and formulated product. Adult exposed for 96 h to 1.76 mgl(-1) formulated Gly shown a mortality of 50%. Results indicate that C. nobilii is affected at glyphosate concentrations lower than those expected to be found in freshwater environments and those specified in the legislation.  相似文献

Individual and combined effects of three heavy metals; namely, copper, chromium and nickel, on growth, photosynthesis and chlorophyll a synthesis of the unicellular green alga, Chlorella pyrenoidosa 251, were determined. Within the concentration range of 0.1 to 1.0 mg litre(-1) of the three heavy metals tested on growth, photosynthesis and chlorophyll a synthesis of the alga, the order of toxicity of the three heavy metals was copper > chromium > nickel. The presence of one of the three heavy metals interacted synergistically with the other two heavy metals in various bimetallic combinations on growth, photosynthesis and chlorophyll a synthesis of the alga.  相似文献

The effects of 2,4-D, glyphosate and paraquat on growth, photosynthesis and chlorophyll-a synthesis by a freshwater green alga, Scenedesmus quadricauda Berb 614, were determined. These herbicides are the most often used in Hong Kong. Within the concentration range 0.02-200 mg/l, paraquat was more toxic than glyphosate and 2,4-D to the growth, photosynthesis and chlorophyll-a synthesis. The presence of 0.02, 0.2 or 2 mg/l of 2,4-D was not toxic to the alga. Algal growth, photosynthesis and chlorophyll-a synthesis were stimulated by the presence of low concentrations (0.02 or 0.2 and 0.02 mg/l, respectively) of 2,4-D and glyphosate. The presence of 0.02 or 0.2 mg/l of paraquat, 2 mg/l of glyphosate or 20 mg/l of 2,4-D was significantly inhibitory to the three test parameters, whereas the presence of 2 or more mg/l of paraquat, 20 or more mg/l of glyphosate or 200 mg/l of 2,4-D completely inhibited algal growth, photosynthesis and chlorophyll-a synthesis. The use of the alga as a bio-indicator of herbicide contamination in freshwater environment was discussed.  相似文献

Diuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)- = 1,1-dimethylurea] and simazine (6-chloro-N(2), N(4)-diethyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) are soil-applied herbicides used in olive crops. The objective of this study is to investigate the combined effect of these herbicides and the amendment of soil with an organic waste (OW) from the olive oil production industry on the growth and photosynthetic apparatus of adult olive trees and to compare the results with those obtained by Redondo-Gómez et al. for two-year-old trees. For this purpose, growth rate, gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were measured in 38-year-old olive trees, after one and two months of soil herbicide treatment and/or OW amendment. Soil co-application of OW and herbicide increases the quantum efficiency of Photosystem II (PSII) and the assimilation of CO(2) in olive trees, which led to a higher relative growth rate of the branches and leaves in length. Herbicide treatment reduced the photosynthetic efficiency in olive trees after two months of soil application, while this reduction is evident from week one in younger trees.  相似文献

Rare earth elements (REEs) have been accumulated in the agricultural environment. Acid rain is a serious environmental issue. In the present work, the effects of lanthanum ion (La3+) and acid rain on the growth, photosynthesis and chloroplast ultrastructure in soybean seedlings were investigated using the gas exchange measurements system, chlorophyll fluorometer, transmission electron microscopy and some biochemical techniques. It was found that although the growth and photosynthesis of soybean seedlings treated with the low concentration of La3+ was improved, the growth and photosynthesis of soybean seedlings were obviously inhibited in the combined treatment with the low concentration of La3+ and acid rain. At the same time, the chloroplast ultrastructure in the cell of soybean seedlings was destroyed. Under the combined treatment with the high concentration of La3+ and acid rain, the chloroplast ultrastructure in the cell of soybean seedlings was seriously destroyed, and the growth and of photosynthesis were greatly decreased compared with those of the control, the single treatment with the high concentration of La3+ and the single treatment with acid rain, respectively. The degree of decrease and destruction on chloroplast ultrastructure depended on the increases in the concentration of La3+ and acid rain (H+). In conclusion, the combined pollution of La3+ and acid rain obviously destroyed the chloroplast ultrastructure of cell and aggravated the harmful effect of the single La3+ and acid rain on soybean seedlings. As a new combined pollutant, the harmful effect of REEs ions and acid rain on plant should be paid attention to.  相似文献

Abstract

Malathion is an organophosphorus pesticide widely used in agricultural crops, despite its toxicity. In addition, malaoxon occurs by oxidation of malathion being more toxic. The toxic effects of malathion and malaoxon in humans include hepatoxicity, breast cancer, genetic damage and endocrine disruption. The aim of this study involved assessing the effect of malathion commercial grade on Chroococcus sp., and its potential as an alternative to the removal of this pesticide and its transformation product such as malaoxon. We evaluated the effect of malathion at different concentrations (1, 25, 50, 75 and 100?ppm) on the biomass of the cyanobacteria Chroococcus sp. grown in medium BG-11; also, we analyse its ability to degrade both malathion and malaoxon into a temperature of 28?±?2?°C and at pH 6. The results showed that 50?ppm of malathion the cyanobacteria Chroococcus sp. reached the highest removal efficiency of malathion and malaoxon (69 and 65%, respectively); also, the growth rate of Chroococcus sp. increased without inhibiting the production of chlorophyll “a”, this can be explained by the hormesis phenomenon. Therefore, we consider that the cyanobacteria Chroococcus sp. may be a good candidate for bioremediation of aquatic systems contaminated with organophosphorus pesticides such as malathion and its transformation product such as malaoxon.  相似文献

Photodegradation of the herbicide EPTC (S-ethyl-N, N-dipropylthiocarbamate), and the safener dichlormid (2,2-dichloro-N, N-diallylacetamide) has been examined in methanol and in water solutions. Irradiation of EPTC and dichlormid with UV light at 254 nm caused rapid degradation in both media. Remarkable and gradual changes in color of EPTC irradiated solution was observed from clear to yellow then to intense orange. EPTC half-life of elimination in water was 14.0, and 18.5 min, and in methanol 37.2 and 32.2 min, when irradiated with and without dichlormid, respectively. There was significant difference between rate of EPTC degradation in water and methanol in the presence or in the absence of dichlormid. Negligible degradation of EPTC or dichlormid at > 290 nm was observed. Photoproducts were separated and identified using GC or/and thin-layer chromatography then identified using mass spectrometry. It appeared that some products have high molecular weight that formed as a result of dimerization. This is possibly a result of the coupling of radicals that formed through EPTC degradation. The cleavage of C-S and C-N bonds accounted for the formation of these radicals. Gradual dealkylation of the acid chains of EPTC has also occurred. EPTC-sulfoxide, EPTC-sulfone, Propylamine and dipropylamine were detected as photoproducts of EPTC at 254 nm. Dichlormid pathways of degradation at 254 nm were characterized as dechlorination, dealkylation, and hydrolysis both in water and methanol. The findings showed that dichlormid did not significantly affect EPTC photodegradation either at 254 nm or at > 290 nm. The biological/toxicological properties of the photoproducts need further study, particularly the dimer compounds.  相似文献
