Dentition characters of Conomurex persicus found along the Mediterranean coasts of Turkey were analyzed. For the analyses of radula, 289 individuals (34 adult males, 140 adult females and the remainder juveniles) were examined. Male and female individuals of the species had different numbers of radular cusps. The radula of the taenioglossate type was made up of two marginal teeth, one lateral and one central (rhachidian) tooth, each being delicate and with different numbers of cusps. The central and lateral teeth had seven cusps and five cusps, respectively, in both males and females. Outer and inner marginal teeth of males had two and one cusps, while those of females had five and six cusps, respectively. The females radula is yellow-whitish. Radular teeth of a neolepetopsid patellogastropod limpet, Paralepetopsis ferrugivora, from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent site have similar elemental composition (O, Si, P, S, Cl, K and Fe) to radular teeth of the shallow-waters patellogastropod limpets. However, in contrast to shallow waters limpets, the fully mature teeth of P. ferrugivora do not show any crystalline phases. Amorphous silica was found in the cusp of the teeth and amorphous iron oxide in the junction zone and base of the teeth. Ferritin-rich vesicles were observed in cells adjacent to the junction zone of the early mature teeth, suggesting that these vesicles can mediate the delivery of iron to the tooth matrix. The similarity in the elemental composition between the hydrothermal limpet P. ferrugivora and shallow-waters patellogastropod limpets shows that the extreme hydrothermal environment did not alter the elemental composition of the radular teeth in the deep-sea species.Communicated by P. Binary matrices originating from presence/absence data on species (rows) distributed over sites (columns) have been a subject of much controversy in ecological biogeography. Under the null hypothesis that every matrix is equally likely, the distributions of some test statistics measuring co-occurrences between species are sought, conditional on the row and column totals being fixed at the values observed for some particular matrix. Many ad hoc methods have been proposed in the literature, but at least some of them do not provide uniform random samples of matrices. In particular, some swap algorithms have not accounted for the number of neighbors each matrix has in the universe of matrices with a set of fixed row and column sums. We provide a Monte-Carlo method using random walks on graphs that gives correct estimates for the distributions of statistics. We exemplify its use with one statistic.  相似文献

Radular function in the muricid gastropod Urosalpinx cinerea follyensis Baker during shell penetration was examined with slow-motion picture photography and scanning electron microscopy. Particular attention was paid to possible injury of buccal structures by radular cusps. The presence of a flexible cuticulated buccal armature, and delicate synchronization of movements of odontophoral cartilages, subradular membrane, teeth, and buccal mass, explain the absence of shredding of live buccal tissues. Some light abrasion was evident, but generally only in the cuticulated gully of the subodontophoral shield, on the rim of the jaw, and on the anterior edge of the esophageal valve. Rasping at the surface of incomplete bore-holes is done by major cusps of rachidian teeth over the bending plane. Marginal teeth lie on the slopes of the odontophore, generally remain depressed below the level of rachidian teeth, and thus scrape the shell only lightly, if at all. The sharp posteriorly recurved shape of central and lateral rachidian cusps enhances their scooping effectiveness. These teeth produce smooth, conspicuous traces in the soft shell of Mya arenaria and shallow traces in the harder shell of Mytilus edulis Linné. The impact of individual cusp strikes was not evident in traces. With wear, rachidian cusps become increasingly blunted, a reflection of their ploughing action over chemically weakened shell, and are eventually sanded flat. Marginal teeth wear primarily at their ends, the tips becoming truncated as they pass lightly over the shell surface. The advancing edge of the odontophore during rasping strokes, plotted on the image from motion pictures moves slowly at first, then more rapidly in the middle of the stroke, and slows again at the end. Duration of strokes ranged from 0.45 to 0.75 sec. Duration of rasping cycles varied from 1.3 to 2.0 sec. The number of transverse rows of teeth passing over the bending plane during the rasping stroke varied from 14 to 32, and the average time for the passage of one transverse row over the bending plane ranged from 20 to 48 msec. The number of transverse rows of teeth remaining exposed beneath the odontophore below the bending plane at the end of the rasping stroke, and between the bending plane and the anterior end of the sulcus in the radular diverticulum, was approximately 10.  相似文献

The mechanism of silicification from which the intricate cell walls of diatoms emerge, as well as the stereochemical relationship between the wall's organic casing and the siliceous materials within, continue to elude current technology. The present study further develops Hecky et al.'s standing model of the organicinorganic interface with semi-empirical computer simulations of a biosilicification pathway. Polycondensation reactions between silicic acid molecules and a hydroxyl-rich -sheet protein template results in a stereochemically-compatible chemisorbed tetrasiloxane ring. The 24-stage reaction pathway has an activation barrier of +15.4 kcal mol-1 and results in a net stabilization of-28.0 kcal mol-1. Spatial matching and favorable thermodynamics support the theory of protein-mediated biomineralization of the diatom.  相似文献

The average grazing and ingestion rates of all stages of the marine planktonic copepod Calanus helgolandicus (Calanoida) from nauplius stage IV to adults were measured experimentally at 15°C in agitated cultures. The chain-forming diatom Lauderia borealis and the unarmoured dinoflagellate Gymnodinium splendens were offered as food. The food concentrations were close to natural conditions and ranged from 36 to 101 g of organic carbon per liter. The medium body weights expressed in g of organic carbon of almost all larval stages raised at 49 g C/1 were identical with the weight of the same stages caught in the Pacific Ocean off La Jolla, California, USA. In a log-log system, grazing and ingestion rates increased almost linearly with increasing body weight. Grazing rates ranged from 4 to 21 ml/day/nauplius stage IV to 286 ml to 773 ml/day/female. Ingestion rates increased from 0.2 g to 0.8 g C/day/nauplius stage IV to 18 g to 69 g C/day/female. Grazing and ingestion rates per unit body weight decreased gradually with increasing body weight. The daily ingested amount of food decreased from 292 to 481% of the body weight (g C) of nauplius stage V to 28–85% of the body weight of adult females. Grazing and ingestion performances of all stages increased with increasing particle size. Grazing rates decreased and ingestion rates increased with increasing food concentrations. The published data on food intake of the different age groups of C. helgolandicus show that the young stages of herbivorous planktonic copepods can play a major part in the consumption of phytoplankton in the sea due to their high grazing and ingestion rates.  相似文献

The pathways of 14C incorporation into the three major compartments of the coral body were analysed in colonies of Stylophora pistillata. We used the optic glass-fiber method to carry out two sets of experiments: in the first, 11 different colonies were sampled immediately after incubation; in the second, 3 colonies were returned to the reef at the termination of incubation for a further period of 29 h. Within the tissue compartment, significantly more 14C labeled products were incorporated into illuminated tips or bases than into unilluminated sections. Tips located above illuminated bases contained amounts of 14C products similar to unilluminated tips. Within the organic matrix compartment, illumination of tip or base segments again resulted in increased amounts of 14C fixation, and again unilluminated tips located above the illuminated bases did not accumulate more 14C photosynthates than other tips on the same branches. The absence of detectable translocation was also confirmed after a post-incubation period of 29 h, and raises questions as to the validity of the widely accepted theory of upward translocation. Within the skeletal carbonate compartment, although the results were associated with a high coefficient of variation, significantly more 14C accumulated in the tips than in the bases. Illumination of tips or bases did not enhance 14C uptake. A light-independent carbon assimilation (dark fixation) is significant in S. pistillata within the three tested compartments (the tissue, the organic matrix of the skeleton, and the skeletal carbonate). It is suggested that the dark fixation process in corals in a result of accumulation of respiratory CO2 and CO2 from sea water as malate or other titratable acids during the night. During the day these acids are broken down, releasing free CO2 for C3 pathway photosynthesis.  相似文献

In a study to assess qualitatively the importance of organic matter derived from kelp production in the Aleutian Islands of subarctic Alaka, replicated samples of autotrophic sources and primary and secondary consumer organisms were sampled for 13C among sources, sites, (treatment) islands, and years. Unanticipated variation in the 13C of kelps occurred among overtly similar sites at different islands. Variation in the 13C of the surface canopy-forming kelp Alaria fistulosa was particularly extreme, ranging from-15.5 to-28.0 compared to the understory kelps, Laminaria spp. A. fistulosa 13C varied by as much as 6 to 7 among similar sites at a given island within years, and by as much as 3 to 4 between years at the same sampling site. In serveral cases, 13C variation was weakly tracked by some consumer organisms, suggesting that even detritus pathways through the food web can be localized and tightly coupled. Dynamic cycles in the concentration and 13C of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and aqueous CO2 concentration ([CO2]aq) were measured at three sites on one island. The 13C or organic carbon fixed by A. fistulosa, calculated from diurnal DIC concentration and 13C measurements, varied by 15 and varied inversely with [CO2]aq concentrations. Local DIC variability, probably resulting from high productivity and decreased turbulence in dense kelp habitats, provides a possible mechanism of variation in kelp 13C. The short-term variability in the 13C of organic carbon fixed by kelps indicates that sampling methodology and design must assess this potential variation in marine macrophyte 13C before making assumptions about the transfer of 13C-invariate organic matter to higher trophic levels. On the positive side, a predictable relationship between [CO2]aq concentration and kelp 13C offers a potentially robust means to assess productivity effects on CO2 limination in kelps and other complex aquatic macrophyte habitats.  相似文献

During the course of its embryonic development, the European lobster Homarus gammarus Linnaeus exhibits progressive increases in content of water (54.0 to 83.1%), ash (2.7 to 16.7%), protein (47.4 to 50.9%) and non-protein nitrogen (1.0 to 2.4%), and steady decreases in content of fat (43.8 to 25.4%) and energy (6343 to 5431 cal/g dry organic substance). Cumulative yolk utilization efficiency during the total development is 81.8% for dry weight; the corresponding value for energy is 60.1, for protein 75.6 and for fat 47.4%. Energy content of a single egg is 10.49 cal. Of 4.20 cal expended for metabolic processes of the embryo, only 13.3% energy is drawn from protein oxidation; fat oxidation supplies as much as 87.7% energy, that of carbohydrate only 2.3%. Embryonic development results in a remarkable decrease in net yolk utilization efficiency, which falls from 85.5% in the early developmental stages, to less than 70% in later developmental stages. The mean dry weight of a single egg membrane increases from 38 g (2.2% of egg weight) in a freshly laid and attached egg, to 81 g in an egg with an almost completely developed embryo. This result supports the earlier observation of Cheung (1966) that the formation of the inner chitinous egg membrane occurs after the egg is laid and attached to the setum. Protein seems to be the major constituent of the egg membrane (4049 cal/g dry weight), which has the following composition: protein 70.4%, non-protein nitrogen 0.13%, ash 2.83%. Initial permeability of the egg membrane to water (about 6% of the total water requirement is let in) is followed by a period during which the egg membrane is almost impermeable to water (stages I to III); the egg membrane becomes permeable to water again and lets in 85% of the total water requirement (the rest, i.e. 9%, is metabolic water) at a relatively advanced stage of development. These assumed changes in egg membrane permeability appear to be indicative of variations in the egg's osmoconcentration leading to shiftings in net transport of water. Rates of water and salt uptake during embryonic development are essentially parallel (Fig. 1). The egg membrane remains permeable to salts throughout development; salt intake almost doubles after the egg passes through stage III. A single egg, weighing 3.7 mg requires 4.9 mg water for successful completion of embryonic development. The imbibition of water by the developing marine demersal egg seems to (1) serve in osmotic hatching; (2) float the hatched larva by means of specific gravity reduction; (3) aid the larva to quickly adjust its body temperature. The simple osmotic hatching mechanism, proposed by previous workers, seems to be inadequate to account for the events and timing of the hatching process in the lobster. It is suggested that hatching time is determined not solely by increased internal pressure caused by inflow of water and salts, but also by some unknown internal factor. In the lobster egg, as well as in many other marine demersal eggs, protein metabolism is suppressed to a considerable extent, and fat metabolism is geared up Thus, the non-cleidoic lobster eggs exhibit metablic properties which are typical of cleidoic eggs. This finding is discussed in the light of Needham's (1950) concept of cleidoicterrestrial and non cleidoic-aquatic eggs.Dedicated to Professor P. The reproductive biology of the Mediterranean vermetid gastropod Serpulorbis arenarius, a subtidal sessile solitary species that lives in shady rocky communities, was studied at two localities south-east of the Iberian Peninsula. Its population density is usually low, with specimens sometimes sparsely distributed. Its shell often appears to be covered by epibiotic organisms. The sex ratio is biased toward males (63%) in the populations of SE Spain, and the results point towards hermaphroditism with alternating sexuality. The results obtained suggest that all specimens are first males, change to females under some as yet unknown condition and, after the ovogenesis cycle has been completed, revert to the original sexual state (male). The possible adaptive forces that favour hermaphroditism in this species are discussed, and we hypothesise that the seizure of a spermatophore by males may stimulate sex change to female. Brooding females (51% of females studied) were found from March to December. In males, histological study of testes revealed that spermatogenesis seems to occur throughout the year. Females brooded between 5 and 28 (=15) egg capsules, which were attached by stalks to the inner surface of the shell. It is noteworthy that the gonads of two of the specimens brooding egg capsules were developing testes. The newly laid egg capsules were filled with an organic intracapsular matrix, in which 40–153 (=94) eggs were embedded. The mean diameter of the uncleaved ova was 352.5 µm. The organic intracapsular matrix and some nurse eggs were used as an extra-embryonic food source. Hatching occurred at an advanced veliger stage, immediately followed by metamorphosis. Therefore, the larval development of S. arenarius is of a lecithotrophic intracapsular type, with a short, free-swimming/crawling phase.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Nitrogen regeneration accompanying the bacterial degradation of a variety of amino acids supplied at 10.0 M to samples of coastal plankton communities collected near Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada was examined. A lag period characterized by a low rate of amino acid uptake and ammonia release was typically followed by a dramatic increase in the rates of uptake and ammonia release. The duration of the lag period varied with the amino acid tested. The ratio of the final ammonia concentration to the nitrogen supplied as amino acid was taken as the regeneration ratio. This value varied from 0.58 to 0.86 for L-arginine and 0.38 to 1.17 for the other amino acids tested, with an average value of 0.74. The presence of inorganic fixed nitrogen at 10.0 M had no effect on the degradation of L-arginine. Other organic compounds supplied at 10.0 M decreased the lag period for L-arginine uptake and degradation. Glucose supplied at 50.0 M decreased the nitrogen regeneration ratio, but did not further decrease the lag for L-arginine degradation. Carbon respiration ratios for L-arginine, L-glutamate, and L-lysine were 0.70, 0.68, and 0.65 when the nitrogen regeneration ratios were 0.86, 0.38, and 0.77, respectively.  相似文献

We estimated primary productivity and distributions of carbon in the phytoplankton, micro-zooplankton, and suspended and dissolved matter in various areas of the World Ocean to increase our information about the organic carbon cycle in the surface layer of the sea. Primary productivity ranged from about 0.1 gC m–2 day–1 in the Gulf of Mexico to 9 gC m–2 day–1 in nutrient-rich water off Peru. Phytoplankton carbon ranged from less than 10 g/l in the former to 750 g/l in the latter and in nutrient-rich water off southwest Africa. Micro-zooplankton carbon usually was less than 50 g/l in all waters, and was dominated by ciliates, copepodids, and copepod nauplii in all areas. Concentrations of particulate carbon ranged from 12 g/l off the east coast of South America to 850 g/l off southwest Africa. Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon varied between 0.5 and 1.5 mg/l in all areas except off Peru, where maximum values of 4.5 mg/l were observed. Turnover rates of carbon by small standing crops of micro-flagellates (1 to 5 longest dimension) and dinoflagellates in nutrient-poor waters were lower than those by large standing crops of diatoms and micro-flagellates in nutrient-rich waters. Concentrations of phytoplankton usually accounted for 20 to 55% and micro-zooplankton for 2 to 30% of the particulate carbon in the surface layer of the sea. Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon were not related to concentrations of particulate carbon in most waters except off Peru, where they appear to be directly related.  相似文献

Specimens of the Indo-Pacific piscivorous gastropod Conus magus Linnaeus, 1758 were either collected by SCUBA in the field in Palau (1983–1984) or raised in the laboratory from egg capsules. C. magus captures adult fish with a specially modified radula tooth. Radula morphology was analyzed in a size range of individuals from 4.1 to 43.7 mm shell length, which encompassed early postmetamorphic juveniles to adults. Post-metamorphic C. magus juveniles are too small to consume fish, and all individuals below 9 mm possess a juvenile radula tooth totally different from that of the adult and resembling that of some vermivorous Conus species. The only food remains found in the digestive tracts of juveniles were the setae of syllid polychaetes. All individuals above 10.5 mm possessed adult teeth and had only fish remains in the gut. Two specimens, 10.1 and 9.2 mm in shell length, had intermediate-type radula teeth.  相似文献

Feeding in early life stages of the sedentary snail Crepidula is effected both by the use of the radula and by filtering with the gill. The present study is a contribution to the knowledge of the mechanisms of feeding by early juvenile snails of Crepidula fecunda. Experimental observations were made on specimens of known ages as they were fed constant concentrations of microalgae in the presence of a primary biological film on a glass substrate. Feeding activity was filmed under the microscope, and images were digitized for the identification and quantification of feeding structures. A morphological analysis was made of the structures associated with this process. Results showed that the radula was functional beginning in 1-day-old juveniles, and the gill functioned in respiration. Gill function in filter-feeding began in juveniles of 9 days old when dorsal and ventral ciliation had developed, as well as the food pouch. The latter structure begins activity as soon as the gill starts food collection. Osphradia appeared simultaneous with development of the filter feeding capacity by the gill. In their earliest stages after metamorphosis, the young snails begin life by radular scraping of primary biofilms, gradually shifting to filter feeding as the gill developed a critical number of filaments and cilia.  相似文献

Salinity and silicate concentrations were studied at about fortnightly intervals for 21 months at a station near Barbados, W. Indies; latitude 13°15 N, longitude 59°42 W. A sensitive inverse correlation was found to exist at 5 and 25 m, but not at greater depths. Salinity near the surface varied between 33.5 and 36.0, and silicate between a little less than 1 and 4 g at/l. Low salinity water, rich in silicate, was found from February to July; salinity increased and silicate decreased from September to December. It is argued that the low salinity water at Barbados can be identified with the areas of reduced salinity found by Ryther et al. (1967) about latitude 8° to 10° N, longitude 50° to 55° W, and that this water originates from the Amazon River. Local precipitation does not seem to be a significant factor.  相似文献

Surface soils (0–15 cm) were sampled at 10–20 km intervals along two transects in Venezuela. One (1162 km, 70 samples) ran west to east parallel with the Caribbean coastline, the other (920 km, 92 samples) ran south to north from the frontier with Brazil to the Caribbean shore. Sampling took place in both a wet and a dry season. Trace metals were extracted from dried, sieved (<2 mm) soil with boiling aqua regia followed by analysis by ICP or flame AAS. Metal values did not differ significantly between the two seasons and dates were averaged. Geometric mean values for the west–east transect were: Cr=41.5, Cu 17.9, Cs 3.6, Li=13.9, Mn=294, Ni=21.3, Pb=17.4, Sr=39.4, V=60.4 and Zn = 83.7g g–1, respectively. Similarly, for the south–north transect Cr=21.3, Cu=4.3, Cs=1.1, Li=2.0, Mn=55.7, Ni=4.4, Pb=6.1, Sr=13.3, V=28.2 and Zn=16.7g g–1, respectively. A classification of samples by lithology showed surface soil composition to be related to rock composition. Metal values were low in the soils in the south of the country, in the Guyana highlands (Gran Sabana). Low Zn contents were prevalent. Lead contents were affected by roadside fallout from vehicles using leaded petrol except that high Pb contents of soils in the Gran Sabana were of more complex origin.  相似文献

Row crops like vineyards undergo various and significant manipulations of training system and cultural practices, which strongly influence the quality of products. Variations of water vapour fluxes from the soil surface and the leaves in the row volume are closely linked to the ratio of energy available to each compartment. A physically realistic model of available energy partition between the rows and the soil surface is therefore a key factor towards optimization of such systems, and must be included in canopy models. A number of available models were not directly validated. The purpose of the study was therefore to design a model of net radiation partition and check it directly.The model of net radiation partition between rows (Rnv), considered as a whole, and intervening soil surface (Rns) of a row-crop canopy was developed from physically realistic yet simple assumptions:
-
global solar (short wave) radiation partition was calculated by a previously validated geometric model;
-
long-wave radiative fluxes between the soil surface, the rows and the atmosphere were calculated from the corresponding view factors, which only depended on canopy geometry;
-
atmospheric radiation was estimated by a simple empirical relation based on air temperature as the only input variable;
-
air temperature in the vicinity of leaves replaced leaf surface temperatures as a more convenient input variable, with little loss of information.
The input variables were incoming direct and diffuse solar radiation, soil surface mean temperature and air temperature near the leaves. The main parameters were soil and leaf albedos, row porosity and dimensions.A direct validation of the model was attempted by measuring net radiation above the canopy and at five positions above the soil surface in a vineyard of the Bordeaux area. The reliability of soil surface net radiation measurements was estimated by thorough error propagation analysis. When found significant, errors were corrected and finally soil surface net radiation data were corrected only for delay in direct downward solar radiation striking net radiometers, because canopy was discontinuous and height of net radiometers was not negligible compared to canopy height.In these conditions, model calculations were in agreement with measurements, although the model slightly underestimated Rns and therefore overestimated Rnv. As the mean error was about 20 W m−2, and therefore compatible with instrument accuracy, the results were considered satisfactory.This available energy partition model is able to estimate radiative balance in various canopy systems and in various thermal environment conditions, leading to easier simulations of energy balance and water fluxes. It could therefore be a useful tool for optimizing row-crop canopies, taking fully into account any kind of present or future thermal environment.  相似文献

Pre-sphere, trochospiralOrbulina universa (d'Orbigny) were hand-collected between June and September, 1982 to 1984, from surface waters of the Pacific Ocean ca. 2 km off Santa Catalina Island, California, USA. The formation of a spherical chamber by this planktonic foraminifer was studied with light and electron microscopy. Chamber morphogenesis is preceded by the secretion of a cytoplasmic layer rich in mitochondria. The layer expands away from the pre-existing foraminiferal shell surface in a spherical pattern. Full cytoplasm expansion is followed by the secretion of an organic matrix (OM) approximately 200 m above the original shell surface. Cytoplasm, mitochondria and/or vesicles may play a role in OM secretion. Calcification and chamber thickening, new spine growth and pore development are documented and continue for a period of 1–7 d. Approximately 24 h prior to gamete release, the foraminiferal spines are resorbed and a veneer of calcite is deposited on the shell surface. An extensive intracellular organelle unique to foraminifera, the fibrillar system, is examined and is hypothesized to play a role in the biomineralization process. The taxonomic and functional significance of theO. universa spherical chamber is discussed with respect to other foraminiferal species.  相似文献

A technique utilizing combined fixation and gentle decalcification has been employed to study the ultrastructure of the vegetative cells of the articulated calcareous coralline algae Corallina officinalis Linnaeus and C. cuvierii Lamouroux (Rhodophyta: Cryptonemiales). The epidermal cells are distinctive, with many cell wall inggrowths which pass between the chloroplasts. It is suggested that these cells function as transfer cells. The epidermal cells contain no starch, although the chloroplasts have well developed photosynthetic lamellae. Damage to these epidermal cells leads to formation of new cells by renewed division of sub-epidermal meristematic cells. The outer cortical cells have few small vacuoles and many plastids, with an extensive photosynthetic lamellar system. Deeper into the thallus, the vacuoles increase in size and free cytoplasmic starch grains occur. The medullary cells have a very large vacuole and in older tissue often appear dead. The long genicular cells have calcareous walls at either end while the wall in the middle of these cells is non-calcareous and has an inner fibrillar layer and a thin outer cuticle. In partially decalcified material, the orientation of the CaCO3 (calcite) crystals next to the cells can clearly be seen. Immediately next to the cell the crystals are fairly small and arranged at right angles to the plasmalemma. Further away from the cell the crystal size is larger and their orientation is more random. The feeding structures or houses of the giant larvacean Bathochordaeus sp. serve as both habitat and food for the calanoid copepod Scopalatum vorax. Gut contents of S. vorax include both microbial and metazoan associates of larvacean houses, and possibly the house-mucus matrix itself. Copepods were observed and collected from larvacean houses between 100 and 500 m in Monterey Bay, California, using a submersible ROV (remotely operated vehicle) from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Gut contents were compared to potential food items on the houses and in the open water (not associated with the house). Copepods were generalist feeders, with amorphous detritus, diatoms, and copepods or other crustacean parts dominating gut contents. Protozoans and algae other than diatoms were rarer in guts. Houses contained a diverse assemblage of microplankton and metazoans, both intact specimens and detrital remains of these. Numbers of diatoms and fecal pellets were enriched by 1 to 3 orders of magnitude on houses compared to numbers in surrounding water. Many of the abundant species of diatoms and copepods on houses occurred in S. vorax guts. This observation coupled with S. vorax feeding habits observed in situ and in the laboratory provide evidence for feeding on houses. S. vorax appears to possess special adaptations to living in a resource-limited environment, such as gorging as a feeding adaptation, chemosensory structures to help locate houses, and the ability to change feeding modes. Consumption of detritus at depth by S. vorax provides evidence that metazoans contribute to remineralization of particulate organic carbon in the mesopelagic zone.  相似文献
