Primary production within the Baie des Chaleurs, Canada, is dominated by a cyclonic gyre system. The pattern of production fits the theoretical expectation of increased productivity associated with colder, nutrient-rich water being brought closer to the surface within the gyre. Upper reaches of the bay, west of the gyre, follow a normal esturine form of circulation with lower rates of production. The hyperiid amphipods have been examined from an extensive series of depthstratified bongo net tows taken at 28°N; 155°W in the North Pacific central gyre, an open-ocean ecosystem. Seventy-nine samples from 6 depth ranges produced 14, 581 individuals belonging to 13 families, 42 genera, and 83 species. Data on depth distributions, rank orders of abundance, sex ratios, and vertical migration are presented. Most of these species are shown to be reproductively active in the gyre, and there appears to be no seasonality to their reproductive behavior. No species endemic to the gyre are yet known.  相似文献

Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate gyres within open lacustrine embayments subjected to parallel-to-shore currents. In such embayments, gyre formation occurs due to flow separation at the embayment’s upstream edge. High momentum fluid from the mixing layer between the embayment and offshore flows into the embayment and produces recirculating flow. Systematic numerical experiments using different synthetic embayment configurations were used to examine the impact of embayment geometry. Geometries included embayments with different aspect ratios, depths and embayment corner angles. The magnitudes of the recirculation and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) in the embayment vary significantly for angles in the range 40°–55°. Embayments with corner angles less than 50° have much stronger recirculation and TKE, other parameters remaining the same. The numerical findings are consistent with gyre formation observed in two embayments located in Lake Geneva, Switzerland, and thus help explain flow patterns recorded in lacustrine shoreline regions.  相似文献

In September and October 1980 we examined the relationships between food availability, depth, and chemical composition among 12 midwater fish species, from three adjacent areas of the eastern North Pacific: the eastern gyre, the California Current, and the transitional region between them. By comparing trends in chemical composition across a geographical productivity gradient, the influence of food availability could be examined both with and without depth as a dependent variable. In general, caloric density, lipids, and water content showed consistent trends along both vertical and horizontal gradients of food availability. Lipids and caloric contents were lowest among bathypelagic species and among fishes from the gyre. Water content was highest in the gyre and among deeper-living species. While protein content as a percentage of the total wet weight declined with depth, there was no clear trend among mesopelagic species between stations. Protein as percent of the total organic content showed no decrease with depth, but was significantly higher in the gyre among mesopelagic species. These findings suggest that compositional trends in water, lipids, and caloric content are correlated with food availability, regardless of any depth-related factors. In contrast, protein did not vary consistently with food availability and thus may be linked to other factors.  相似文献

SARAGO sections identify a sub-surface doming with higher chlorophyll a and primary production concentrations in the upwelling area of a cyclonic gyre region, detected by sea-surface temperature images. In the first section, the cyclone presents a double doming, in density and salinity, with shallower and concentrated patches of chlorophyll a for about 2 miles. Twenty days later, the second section shows that the gyre changes shape and extension, showing a single doming with higher primary production and chlorophyll a concentrations, distributed over a large area of about 40 nautical miles. SARAGO allows analysis of this high-variability phenomenon (cyclonic gyre) and allows concentrated patches (2 nm) to be identified, thus proving the importance of TUVs in the study of mesoscale processes.  相似文献

Mesozooplankton group composition was examined in the Northeastern Aegean Sea (NEA) over a grid of 30 stations sampled during July 2004. The surface water layer influenced by the low salinity Black Sea waters (BSW) is considered in this paper. We attempted to study horizontal distribution patterns of major mesozooplankters within a more comprehensive framework, taking into account not only hydrology but also available, concurrently collected data on lower trophic levels (autotrophic and microbial heterotrophic communities). BSW was mainly restricted in the eastern part of the surveyed area where it was entrapped in a ca. 50-km wide anticyclone (the “Samothraki” gyre). High Chlα concentrations, autotrophic biomass as well as abundance and biomass of mesozooplankton were associated with the BSW, with the highest values recorded inside the gyre as well as at its coastal northern periphery and the lowest values towards the western and offshore part of the surveyed area characterized by high salinity waters of Levantine origin. Among mesozooplankters, cladocerans (mainly Penilia avirostris) showed a high abundance within the gyre in contrast to the very low abundance of copepods and appendicularians. Low salinity-high temperature gyre waters were characterized by the dominance of cyanobacteria of the genus Synechococcus in autotrophic biomass and the significant contribution of heterotrophic nanoflagellates in microbial heterotrophic biomass. Based on existing knowledge on ecophysiological traits and prey size-spectra selectivity, we discuss the observed distribution patterns of major mesozooplankton groups in terms of ambient abiotic parameters and the possible biological interactions among these groups as well as with lower or upper trophic levels.  相似文献

The larval fish assemblage in the epipelagic zone of the North Pacific central gyre near Lat. 28°N, Long. 155°W during late summer was sampled with stratified opening/closing bongo nets. This assemblage exhibited recurring patterns of spatial and species distributions. Spatial patterns included species vertical distributions, co-occurrence and pathchiness; species patterns included species composition and abundance relations. Both types of patterns changed with depth, the most dramatic change occurring in relation to the bottom of the summer mixed layer. An examination of the physical and biological environments of the epipelagic zone with relation to the summertime species and spatial patterns and to seasonal changes in larval fish species structure indicates that the thermal structure of the upper water column may exert a major influence on overall ichtyoplanton species and spatial structures within the gyre.  相似文献

Loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings emerge from nests on either the east or west coast of the South Florida peninsula and then migrate offshore in opposite directions. Under laboratory conditions, magnetic cues induce east coast hatchlings to swim in directions that promote their transport by oceanic surface currents, such as the North Atlantic gyre. However, the surface currents used by west coast hatchlings are unknown. We examined the responses of west (Sarasota) hatchlings to magnetic cues in the Gulf of Mexico, the Florida Straits, and the Gulf Stream to determine their (1) likely migratory routes (2) orientation where currents lead into the Atlantic Ocean, and (3) orientation adjacent to Florida’s east coast. The results suggest that migration inside Gulf waters may be circuitous, that the turtles respond appropriately to enter Atlantic waters, and that orientation along Florida’s east coast probably promotes transport by the Gulf Stream into the North Atlantic gyre.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal feeding patterns (determined from an index of gut fullness) are described for 10 typical species of calanoid copepods collected from the North Pacific central gyre (September 1968 to June 1977), an area where the zooplankton is food limited and there were a-priori reasons to suspect that feeding and competition for food were important in regulating zooplankton community structure. Over 100 samples from 11 cruises to the eastern part of the gyre were examined, and patterns of gut fullness were related to environmental variables and the copepod species structure. The copepods studied all tended to be omnivores and food generalists. Males had lower indices of gut fullness than females but both males and females of a species had similar spatial and temporal feeding patterns. Guts were usually fuller at night than during the day, even in nonmigrating species; however, within nighttime depth distributions, no depths were preferred for feeding. There were also differences between species in mean gut fullness, but different species tended to have similar spatial and temporal feeding patterns. There was considerable spatial variability, and locales could be identified in which most species had higher indices of gut fullness. The copepods were not necessarily more abundant in these locales, nor did these tend to be areas of above average chlorophyll concentration. These patterns were consistent with relatively nonselective feeding, and there was no evidence that these species separate their niches by feeding at differing places or times.  相似文献

Studies were made of Amphipoda Hyperiidea collected in 1987 with a pelagic trawl in the South Pacific anticyclonic gyre in the vicinity of the Nazca and Sala y Gómez ridges (17°35 to 26°01S, 80°10 to 100°50W), at depths ranging from 50 to 300 or 600 m. Forty-three hauls contained 7 198 specimens, comprised of 119 species within 43 genera. Two of the species appeared to be new for science; two others were found in the Pacific Ocean for the first time. A comparison with hyperiid collections from other tropical Pacific regions revealed great stability of oceanic faunal composion. However, the collections differed considerably in their dominant species. Furthermore, comparison of Hyperiidea from various parts within the investigated area of the South Pacific gyre also reflected differences in dominant species. The degree of these mesoscale spatial differences was comparable to that among the central regions of the northern and southern anticyclonic gyres.  相似文献

During a study of midwater fish feeding in the oligotrophic North Pacific gyre in August 1978, nine specimens of a tropical-subtropical myctophid, Ceratoscopelus warmingii, were found to have been feeding on mats of diatoms, Rhizosolenia spp. Chemical analyses of the intestinal contents of several additional specimens showed significantly elevated levels of diatom degradation products. Therefore, C. warmingii, although known to feed on zooplankton, appears to be adapted for occasional herbivory. Such an adaptation is exceptional within a major ecological group of oceanic fishes that was previously thought to be exclusively carnivorous. Like omnivorous and herbivorous fishes in general, C. warmingii has a longer intestine than other myctophid species. As an adaptive response to competition from a diverse fish fauna in a low-productivity environment, occasional herbivory by C. warmingii runs counter to the theoretical expectation by expanding rather than narrowing the range of potential food types.  相似文献

The magnitude and physiological characteristics of biological nitrogen fixation have been studied in the oligotrophic waters of the North pacific gyre. The filamentous blue-green algae Trichodesmium spp. and Richelia intracellularis were the important nitrogen-fixing phytoplankton. Most of the nitrogen fixation occurs in the upper 40 m of the water column, with detectable fixation as deep as 90 m, which corresponds to about the 1 % light depth. There was no evidence of photoinhibition of nitrogen fixation, although CO2 reduction was depressed slightly at the highest light levels. The rate of nitrogen fixation in the water column varied throughout the day, being highest in mid-morning and in late afternoon. Relatively high fixation rates were also found during periods of darkness. Elevated oxygen concentrations had a marked inhibitory effect on rates of nitrogen fixation, a pO2 of 0.4 atm causing a 75% inhibition. Data from studies of nitrogen fixation and assimilation rates of 15N-labelled nitrate, ammonium, and urea indicate that nitrogen fixation furnished about 3% of the total daily fixed nitrogen requirement for phytoplankton growth. Studies with isolated colonies of Trichodesmium spp. indicated that 100% of their nitrogen requirement was met by nitrogen fixation. Chemical composition of the Trichodesmium colonies showed that the C:N ratio was 4.1 and that their phosphorus content relative to carbon or nitrogen was much lower than that of the total particulate material in the water column. Elevated ratios of carbon: adenosine triphosphate (ATP) also suggest that phosphorus deficiency may be limiting the growth of Trichodesmium. The magnitude of nitrogen fixation in the gyre is seasonally dependent, with high rates in late summer and autumn. At these times the water column is stratified, with phosphate and nitrate barely detectable in the upper 100 m. Our data suggest that during these months of stratification, biological fixation of nitrogen amounts to about 33 g-at N/m2/day.  相似文献

Consecutive groynes and embayments form dead water zones, where sedimentation and high concentrations of pollutants are often observed. It is thus very important to understand the mass and momentum exchange between the main channel and side cavities in rivers and hydraulic engineering structures. The spanwise gradient of the streamwise velocity near the junction produces small-scale turbulent vortices because of shear instability. Furthermore, large-scale horizontal circulation is also generated in the cavity zone. These coherent turbulent structures play a significant role in mass and sediment transfer at the boundary between the mainstream and embayment. However, the relation between turbulence and mass transfer is poorly understood. In this study, we performed particle image velocity and laser-induced fluorescence experiments using a laboratory flume, laser light sheets and a high-speed CMOS camera. We examined the exchange properties of a dye as a function of bed configuration and sedimentation effect. Both primary and secondary gyres were observed in the flat bed and downward-sloping bed, whereas the primary gyre was prevalent in the upward-sloping bed. Moreover, the horizontal circulation strongly affected the mass-transfer properties between the mainstream and side cavity.  相似文献

During 1955–2003, flipper tags were attached to 46,983 green turtles and ten turtles were fitted with satellite transmitters at Tortuguero, Costa Rica. Eight satellite-tracked turtles stayed within 135 km of the beach and probably returned to nest after release. The internesting area is more extensive than previously documented. Post-nesting migration routes of satellite-tracked turtles varied. Seven turtles swam close to the coast and three turtles swam through oceanic waters before moving toward nearshore areas. Sea surface height anomaly maps indicate that oceanic movements were consistent with the southwestern Caribbean gyre. Circling and semi-circling turtles could have been disoriented but submergence and surface times suggest they may have been feeding in Sargassum sp. concentrations. Rapid post-nesting migrations (mean 2.2 km hr−1) ended on benthic feeding grounds in shallow waters (<20 m) off Belize (n=1), Honduras (n=1) and Nicaragua (n=8). The spatial distribution of migration end points (n=10) and tag returns (n=4,669) are similar. Fishermen in Nicaragua target green turtles along migratory corridors and on foraging grounds. Management efforts are urgently needed in Nicaragua, particularly in the high-density feeding areas south and east of the Witties (N14°09 W82°45). The proximity of foraging grounds to the nesting beach (mean 512 km) may permit female turtles to invest more energy in reproduction and hence the Tortuguero population may have greater potential for recovery than other green turtle nesting populations. Recovery of the Tortuguero green turtle population will benefit countries and marine ecosystems throughout the Caribbean, especially Nicaragua.  相似文献

We present a method for estimating the upper bound of the horizontal eddy diffusivity using a non-stationary Lagrangian stochastic model. First, we identify a mixing barrier using a priori evidence (e.g., aerial photographs or satellite imagery) and using a Lagrangian diagnostic calculated from observed or modeled spatially non-trivial, time-dependent velocities [for instance, the relative dispersion (RD) or finite time Lyapunov exponent (FDLE)]. Second, we add a stochastic component to the observed (or modeled) velocity field. The stochastic component represents sub-grid stochastic diffusion and its mean magnitude is related to the eddy diffusivity. The RD of Lagrangian trajectories is computed for increasing values of the eddy diffusivity until the mixing barrier is no longer present. The value at which the mixing barrier disappears provides a dynamical estimate of the upper bound of the eddy diffusivity. The erosion of the mixing barrier is visually observed in numerical simulations, and is quantified by computing the kurtosis of the RD at each value of the eddy diffusivity. We demonstrate our method using the double gyre circulation model and apply it to high frequency (HF) radar observations of surface currents in the Gulf of Eilat.  相似文献

Although green turtles (Chelonia mydas Linnaeus) do not nest in Barbados, the easternmost island in the Caribbean archipelago, juveniles are regularly seen foraging in nearshore waters. To examine the stock composition of this foraging population, mitochondrial (mt) DNA control region sequences were analysed from 60 juvenile (31–70 cm curved carapace length) green turtles and compared with data published for key nesting populations in the Atlantic, as well as other feeding grounds (FGs) in the Caribbean. Eight distinct haplotypes were recognised among the 60 individual green turtles sampled around Barbados. Three of the haplotypes found have only previously been reported from western Caribbean nesting beaches, and two only from South Atlantic beaches. The nesting beach origin of one of the Barbados FG haplotypes is as yet unidentified. Stock mixture analysis based on Bayesian methods showed that the Barbados FG population is a genetically mixed stock consisting of approximately equal contributions from nesting beaches in Ascension Island (25.0%), Aves Island/Surinam (23.0%), Costa Rica (19.0%), and Florida (18.5%), with a lesser but significant contribution from Mexico (10.3%). Linear regression analysis indicated no significant effects of rookery population size or distance of the rookery from the FG on estimated contributions from the source rookeries to the Barbados FG. Our data suggest that the similar-sized green turtles sampled on the Barbados FG are a mixed stock of more diverse origins than any previously sampled feeding aggregations in the Caribbean region. The relatively large contribution from the Ascension Island rookery to the Barbados FG indicates that hatchlings from distant rookeries outside the Caribbean basin enter the North Atlantic gyre and become a significant part of the pool from which eastern Caribbean foraging populations are derived. These data support a life cycle model that incorporates a tendency of immatures to migrate from their initial foraging grounds at settlement towards suitable foraging grounds closer to their natal rookeries as they mature.Communicated by P.W. Pelagic species have been traditionally thought to occupy vast, genetically interconnected, geographic ranges in an essentially homogeneous environment. Although this view has been challenged recently for some mesopelagic planktonic taxa, the population structure of hyponeustonic (surface-drifting) species remains unknown. Here, we test the hypothesis of panmixis in Glaucus atlanticus, a cosmopolitan neustonic nudibranch, by assessing the genetic differentiation of multiple representatives from a global neustonic sampling effort. Specimens were collected from all subtropical oceanic gyre systems (North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Pacific, South Pacific, and Indian Ocean). We sequenced a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene for 98 individuals and performed population structure, differentiation (analysis of molecular variance, spatial analysis of molecular variance, F ST, Jost’s D), and molecular clock analyses. Our results indicate that G. atlanticus is not globally panmictic, but that populations appear to be panmictic within ocean basins. We detected several topologically ectopic haplotypes in the Atlantic Ocean, but the molecular clock analysis indicates that these have diverged from closely related Indo-Pacific haplotypes over 1.2 MYA, coinciding with cooling in waters around in the southern tip of Africa and resulting oceanographic changes. These data and the fact that G. atlanticus is not known from polar latitudes suggest that gene flow between ocean basins is hindered by physical barriers (supercontinents) and water temperatures in the Arctic and Southern Oceans.  相似文献

Eighteen species of Candaciidae have been identified from collections made at 339 stations in the Indian Ocean. Most species are zonally distributed; however, on the eastern and western sides of the Indian Ocean, species ranges are extended north or south by boundary currents. Factor analysis was used to cluster phenotypically similar species based on 130 characters taken from the maxilla (a feeding appendage), the first swimming foot, and the fifth foot (a secondary sexual structure). Four morphological clusters were extracted. Clusterings based on separate factor analyses limited to characters from feeding or from sexually adapted appendages are in substantial agreement with the clusters based on composite morphology. Two geographically recurrent groups of species were also identified, one from equatorial waters, one from the central gyre. Each recurrent group is composed of species exceptionally different in body size and belonging to different morphological clusters. Niches of the species are compared using Hutchinson's multidimensional hypervolume as a model. An attempt is made to describe the niche of each species in terms of environmental variables measured at stations where the species was abundant. Environmental variables (dimensions) included in this study are space, time, temperature, food, oxygen and salinity. Mean niche adaptations of most of the species are separable from congeners along at least one niche dimension. It is proposed that community relationships among the Candaciidae developed to prevent both gamete loss and to avoid trophic competition. It is postulated that newly evolving species underwent contemporaneous displacement of both secondary sexual and trophic characters as a condition for sympatry, or diverged in their physiological adaptations to escape sympatric interference.Contribution No. 3686 of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
