Intraspecific variation in the patterns of parental care has been observed in a variety of animals; however, the possibility of parental care by a non-caregiving parent of uniparental species has not been thoroughly explored. In the coral-reef damselfish, Dascyllus albisella, only males normally exhibit parental care. In this study, we examined the response of females of this species to egg predators after experimental male removal and an elevated level of egg predation, at two small patch reefs (reefs 1 and 2) in Hawaii. We tested theoretical expectations that a nest was defended only by females which had spawned in the nest, and that larger females had a higher likelihood of defense than smaller females. A nest was defended against egg predators more frequently by females that had spawned in that nest than would be expected by chance. Not all females that had spawned in a given nest participated in defense. There was a positive association between female body length and the likelihood of defense at reef 2, but not at reef 1. Within a set of females that had spawned in the same nest during the same nesting cycle, defending females had larger body lengths than non-defending females at reef 2 but not at reef 1. Lack of association between female size and likelihood of defense at reef 1 was unexpected, but may correlate with the smaller average female size and smaller size differences among females on that reef.  相似文献

Although coral dwelling fishes are common on coral reefs, the nature of their effect on the host corals is poorly understood. The present study, conducted in the Gulf of Eilat (Red Sea) between July 1989 and August 1990, demonstrated that the branching coral Stylophora pistillata (Esper) benefits, in two components of coral fitness, from the presence of the damselfish Dascyllus marginatus (Rüppell), an obligate coral dweller. The growth rate of damselfish-inhabited corals was significantly higher than that of corals without damselfish. This was observed, using two growth assessment methods, in long-term (>7 mo) comparisons between: (1) corals where the damselfish were experimentally removed versus corals with unaltered fish groups; and (2) naturally inhabited versus non-inhabited corals. The presence of damselfish did not affect the coral's specific (per surface area) reproductive output, whether it was assessed by the number of female gonads per polyp or by the number of planulae released cm-2 surface area d-1. However, the more rapid increase in branch size in damselfish-inhabited corals resulted in an apparent increase in the total reproductive output, with age, in growing corals. These findings demonstrate that the association between the damselfish D. marginatus and its host coral, S. pistillata, is mutualistic.  相似文献

Gonad morphology and colony composition support the existing supposition that the obligate coral-dwelling damselfish Dascyllus aruanus has a protogynous hermaphroditic sexual pattern. Adults had either an active ovary containing vitellogenic oocytes, an ovotestis, or a spermiated testis and were classified as adult female, hermaphrodite, or adult male, respectively. Among individuals having male function, the testis (or testis portion of the ovotestis) takes the form of an unrestricted spermatogonial lobular testis. Among hermaphrodites having an ovotestis, a small proportion of individuals had a gonad in which both the ovarian and testicular portions were inactive (inactive hermaphrodites), whereas the majority had a predominantly testicular ovotestis that contained spermatozoa (male-active hermaphrodites). The size range of individuals within gonadal classes indicates that all D. aruanus first develop an ovariform gonad. Some individuals then undergo ovarian maturation to become adult females while others develop testicular tissue to form an ovotestis and become male-active hermaphrodites. Subsequently, progressive loss of ovarian tissue results in the development of a secondary testis from an ovotestis with the retention of a residual, afunctional lumen among adult males. The wide size range of individuals having an ovotestis suggests that some hermaphrodites function as adult females before developing testicular tissue while other individuals do not pass through an adult female stage. If this is the case, D. aruanus exhibits a diandric protogynous hermaphroditic sexual pattern. The apparent prolonged retention of an ovotestis with both healthy oocytes and an ovarian-type lumen in a spermiated ovotestis, as well as a functional sex ratio of 1:1 for adult females:adult males plus male-active hermaphrodites also raises the possibility that D. aruanus may be capable of bidirectional sex change during the hermaphroditic stage. Such a capability would be highly adaptive for a species having limited mobility and unpredictable recruitment of new colony members resulting in unpredictable mating opportunities.  相似文献

The expression of protogyny often differs among populations of a single species. The humbug damselfish, Dascyllus aruanus (Linnaeus), typically lives in spatially discrete groups of several individuals around live coral colonies and has been reported to be protogynous. The size and sexual composition of groups of this species, however, vary with the size of the coral patch or the degree of coral cover. The present study examined gonadal development and sexual pattern in a population of D. aruanus living in continuous coral-cover habitat. Fish were collected in Tumon Bay, Guam (13°31′N; 144°47′E), during a 2-week period in July and August 1996. Reflecting their distributions, small fish (n=54) were collected at depths of 1–2 m over continuous Porites spp. patches, and large fish (n=56) were collected at depths of 2–3 m over a continuous Acropora spp. patch. Gonadal development was examined histologically. Gonads of D. aruanus first developed an ovarian lumen and primary-growth stage oocytes. From this ovarian state or from more developed ovaries with cortical-alveolus stage oocytes, some gonads developed into testes through degeneration of oocytes and development of spermatogenic tissue. Developing spermatogenic tissue only occurred in gonads having pre-cortical alveolus stage oocytes, and the size of individuals with gonads of this type overlapped mainly with the size range of individuals with gonads containing only pre-vitellogenic oocytes (i.e. immature females). This suggested that functional female-to-male sex change was rare or absent in this population of D. aruanus. Moreover, the different habitat distributions of small and large fish suggest that sex determination in immature fish occurs in the absence of adults.  相似文献

Both sexes of the damselfish Stegastes nigricans hold individual territories in which they feed on filamentous algae. At dawn, females visit males' territories to spawn, and the males guard the eggs until hatching. We examined how females' spawning behavior varied according to the distances to their mates. Females usually mated with a single male per morning. The distance to the territory of a mate (0.7–12.8 m) did not affect a female's total spawning time per morning, but affected the number of her spawning visits with that male. Females made many repeated spawning visits when spawning with males at short distances, while they spawned the entire clutch in one visit when spawning with males at long distances. This plasticity in female behavior appears to be related to two costs during the spawning visits: (1) intrusions by other fish to feed on algae in the female's territory during her absence, which may cause the female to return repeatedly to her territory for defense, and (2) attacks on the female by other territorial fish, which increased with the distance to their mates' territories. To minimize the sum of both costs, females should change the number of spawning visits depending on the distance to the males' territories. In June 1989 in a study conducted near Träminne Zoological Station, Finland (60° N 23° E) I investigated whether or not male mating success could be explained by female choice for male size in sand gobies (Pomatoschistus minutus). Male mating success was constrained by nest size and increased markedly with increasing nest size. I also found a negative correlation between the length of spawning females and the fullness of the nest. As large females lay more eggs, they also need to find a nest with more space available for the eggs. The size of males without eggs was the same across nest size, whereas the size of males with eggs significantly increased with increasing nest size. This is interpreted as female discrimination against males as mates in nests that are often contested. There was no correlation between a male's size and his mating success when males with no eggs in their nests were excluded. A male removal experiment, however, showed that, in a specific nest, when male size increases so does mating success, whereas, if male size decreases, mating success also decreases. It is concluded that in the sand goby females prefer to mate with larger males, especially when the male possesses a high-quality nest that he most probably will have to defend against other males.  相似文献

Damselfish neurofibromatosis (DNF) is a cancer affecting bicolor damselfish (Pomacentrus partitus) on reefs in South Florida, USA. Bicolor damselfish exhibiting DNF were observed on 18 of 19 reefs surveyed, with prevalence rates varying from 0.4 to 23.8% of the adult fish in these populations. These rates were very stable over 5 to 9 yr periods (1981 to 1989) on the two reefs monitored. High disease prevalence was associated with a high population density of large size-class fish and a population structure dominated by large fish. These patterns were observed both between and within reef populations. The distribution of cases within reefs was clustered rather than uniform or random. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that DNF is distributed primarily via fish to fish (horizontal) transmission of an infectious agent. Disease patterns are not consistent with what would be expected to result from inherited (or vertically transmitted) or water-borne agents.  相似文献

In broadcast spawners, low densities and poor spawning synchronization can reduce fertilization success. In wild populations, individuals in close proximity tend to spawn more synchronously than those further apart, suggesting that low spawner densities may reduce gamete production by lessening the efficacy of pheromone signalling. This study assessed the role of adult density in aggregation patterns and spawning synchronization in a semi-sessile, hermaphroditic scallop, Pecten fumatus. The study was carried out in Great Bay, Tasmania, Australia (147.335 W, 43.220 S) in 2010–2012 by assessing (1) the relationship between density, small-scale aggregation patterns and nearest neighbour distance (NND), (2) the temporal pattern of spawning synchronization, and (3) the effect of site density and conspecific proximity on the probability of spawning. Densities observed in the field ranged from 1.455 to 0.021 ind m?2. Sites with lower densities had less small-scale aggregation and greater NNDs. Patterns of small-scale aggregation and NNDs in P. fumatus were comparable to those observed in a gonochoristic species. Spawning synchronization was highly variable, ranging between 3.5 and 59.8 % of individuals spawning. P. fumatus was more likely to engage in spawning activity when at greater densities and at closer proximity to conspecifics. This strongly suggests that lower densities in this scallop reduce not only the number of individuals contributing to the production of gametes, but also reduces the synchronization of spawning.  相似文献

Dascyllus aruanus were collected from 13 different locations in French Polynesia between 15 November 1990 and 15 February 1991 in order to examine larval dispersal on four spatial scales: within-feef, within-island, within-archipelago, among-archipelagoes. Average polymorphism was analysed by protein electrophoresis at two levels (P95=0.285 and P90=0.107) from 12 and 3 polymorphic loci, respectively. Spatial genetic variation displayed a low level of differentiation between populations among archipelagoes, and homogeneity at lower spatial scales. Two hypotheses are proposed to explain the genetic structure observed. The first suggests substantial gene flow between the islands during the pelagic larval phase, the second that the absence of differentiation is the result of recent colonisation. Genetic variation amongst size classes showed a significant heterozygote deficiencies at two loci (PGM * and EST-2 *) in the smallest size class. This suggests a cyclic selection which affects larvae and adults differentially. The data revealed little differentiation among populations at the different localities, despite the short larval duration of D. aruanus; this suggests that larval duration is not the main factor presently affecting genetic structure in an insular model. The effects of copper-enriched seawater on fertilization success, early cleavage, larval skeletal development, and survivorship of adults of the coral-reef echinoid Echinometra mathaei (de Blaiville) were tested. Fifty percent reduction of fertilization success and cleavage success to the 8-cell stage occurred in 0.18 and 0.42 mg added Cu++/l, respectively. Adults had respective 48- and 96-h TL50 values of 0.54 and 0.30 mg/l. Larval skeletal development was suppressed in 0.02 mg/l. The latter process appears to be very sensitive and may be the most suitable for assessing effects of stress on this species.Contribution No. 68, University of Guam Marine Laboratory.  相似文献

Mating system of the hermaphroditic coral-reef fish,Serranus baldwini   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary The lantern bass, Serranus baldwini, is a small hermaphroditic serranid found adjacent to coral reefs throughout the Caribbean. Data from gonad inspection, spawning behavior, and gamete release from individuals all confirm that populations consist of simultaneous hermaphrodites and males. This gender pattern appears to be sequential, with larger males derived from smaller hermaphrodites. The social system is haremic, with the male defending an area containing 1–7 hermaphrodites. The social system and gender pattern are similar to those of the eastern Pacific serranid, Serranus fasciatus. Males obtain disproportionately high mating success by being nearly the sole mates of hermaphrodites within their harems. Hermaphrodites obtain very low levels of mating success through male function. This pattern may result from female choice by hermaphrodites, mate sequestering tactics by males, or both. The serranids that change gender from hermaphrodite to male appear to have a higher environmental potential for polygyny than other simultaneous hermaphrodites in this family. Factors that may maintain male function in hermaphroditic S. baldwini are outlined, but none currently provides clear evidence for why this species has not evolved to protogyny.  相似文献

Based on a large monitoring data set from Danish coastal waters we tested the hypotheses: (1) The vertical pattern of algal abundance is regulated by exposure in shallow water and by light limitation towards deeper water, resulting in a bell-shaped abundance curve, with peak abundance located deeper at more exposed sites, (2) in deeper water, total algal abundance and abundance of perennial algae decrease along a eutrophication gradient while (3) abundance and relative abundance of opportunists increase. The vertical pattern of algal abundance showed a peak at intermediate water depths which was located deeper in more exposed areas and thus confirmed our first hypothesis. For algae growing from depths of peak abundance and deeper, the study demonstrated that total algal abundance and abundance of perennials and opportunists at given depths decreased significantly along a eutrophication gradient and the relationships had high explanatory power (R 2 = 0.53–0.73). These results confirmed our second hypothesis. By contrast, the relative abundance of opportunists responded solely to salinity and was largest in the most brackish areas, in contradiction to hypothesis three. The lack of coupling between eutrophication and relative abundance of opportunists arises because both opportunists and the entire algal community were light limited and their ratio therefore relatively insensitive to changing water clarity. The analyses indicated that algal abundance initially responded slowly to increasing eutrophication but showed a more marked response at TN concentrations of 35–40 μM. However, the existence of possible threshold nutrient levels demands further analyses.  相似文献

Fiddler crabs consume the surficial microphytobenthos around their burrows during low tide. We studied the spatial and temporal feeding patterns in the species Uca uruguayensis by using sequences of digital pictures of feeding pellets accumulation. Data from 61 crabs, feeding without the interference of neighbors, were fitted to different models using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian approaches. Initial feeding location was independent from the emergence location, and then, crabs continued holding a main feeding direction (clockwise or counterclockwise), suggesting a systematic mechanism that may avoid feeding over already processed sediment. Crabs used at least half of their potential feeding area, but these areas were heterogeneous. Both sexes developed similar feeding areas; however, females were faster and needed less time to feed than males, suggesting that males are time restricted. Our work also highlights the importance of incorporating other underlying mechanisms of the behavior of species into the study of feeding strategies.  相似文献

I investigated the ability of predators to influence the patterns of species richness and abundance of non-piscivorous fishes on small, artificial reefs replenished by natural recruitment. Periodic removal of predators effectively reduced the species richness and abundance of predators on removal reefs. The difference between the number of predators on control and removal reefs was greatest immediately following the removal of predators and attenuated between removals. During periods of recruitment, species richness and total abundance of recently-recruited, non-piscivorous fishes were generally greater on predator-removal reefs than on control reefs. Species richness and total abundance of resident non-piscivorous fishes were not affected by the removal of predators in the first year of the experiment. Both abundance and species richness of residents, however, were greater on the removal reefs during the second year of the experiment. The difference in the responses of the two age classes to the removal of predators suggests that predators may affect community patterns of older age classes through time-lagged effects on the survivorship of younger age classes. At the end of the experiment, species richness was positively related to abundance for recruits and residents. The effects of removing piscivorous fishes on the abundance of non-piscivorous fishes were similar for species considered separately. A greater number of species of recruit and resident fishes were more abundant on reefs from which predators had been removed. These data suggest that predators can play an important role in structuring communities of fishes on coral reefs.  相似文献

The surface area of organisms and substrata is shown to be a significant ecological parameter because of its functional importance in the system. Quantification of surface area can be of particular value in morphologically complex environments such as coral reefs. The amount of surface in a reef habitat can be estimated by direct measurements and theoretical approximations, using a surface index (SI) for the amount of surface increase over that of a similarly bounded plane. SI values for a section of the British Honduran barrier reef ranged up to 15 in the reef-crest area at scales significant to macro-organisms. By combining substrate-area measurements with estimates of percent coverage of the major benthic algal components, a reef transect with a horizontal area of 300 m2 was shown to have over 300 m2 covered by benthic macroalgae. The potential for the further development of surface estimation techniques is discussed.  相似文献

Fish abundance is often better predicted by microhabitat variables on continuous reefs than on isolated patch reefs. Although this was suggested to stem from reduced post-recruitment relocation, this has not been shown experimentally. We found the relationship between the presence of a coral-dwelling fish, Dascyllus marginatus, and the size of its coral host to differ between corals on continuous reefs and the sparsely distributed corals on sandy bottoms. Empty transplanted corals were colonized exclusively by new recruits when on the sandy bottom, and both by new recruits and post-recruitment dispersal of adults when on the continuous reef. New recruits settled predominantly into small corals, although analyses of recruitment patterns were confounded by low recruitment in the studied years. Both tank experiments and field survey data suggest that the presence of recruits in small corals is at least partially driven by predation by the dottyback, Pseudochromis olivaceus, which lives predominantly in large corals within both habitats. Consequently, we suggest that the relationship between fish presence and coral size differs between the habitats due to coral size dependent predation on recruits and variability in the importance of direct recruitment to replenish fish populations.  相似文献

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) has been implicated in coral-bleaching processes and UVR may create stress to marine organisms by damage to DNA. Absorption of energy from UVB (280 to 320 nm) induces direct damage to DNA via cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer photoproduct-formation. We examined the extent of DNA damage created by UVR in coral reef microbial communities and whether the coral-surface microlayer (CSM) provides protection from UVR to the microorganisms found there. Diel patterns and depth profiles of UVR effects were examined in coral mucus (coral-surface microlayer, CSM) from Montastraea faveolata and Colpophyllia natans, and water-column samples of similar depths. UV-induced photodamage was determined using a radioimmunoassay specific for cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (thymine dimers). Significant photodamage was detected in water-column and CSM samples, although the level of damage in CSM samples was consistently lower than in water-column samples collected from the same depth, suggesting the presence of photoprotective mechanisms within the CSM. Diel patterns of photodamage were detected in both water-column and CSM samples, but peak damage occurred earlier in the day for the CSM samples, suggesting differences in damage and repair kinetics between the water column and CSM. The results suggest that microorganisms within the CSM are afforded some protection from UVR stress and that changes in the amount of DNA damage in these organisms may be an indicator of changing UVR stress to corals. In the western United States, forest ecosystems are subject to a variety of forcing mechanisms that drive dynamics, including climate change, land-use/land-cover change, atmospheric pollution, and disturbance. To understand the impacts of these stressors, it is crucial to develop assessments of forest properties to establish baselines, determine the extent of changes, and provide information to ecosystem modeling activities. Here we report on spatial patterns of characteristics of forest ecosystems in the western United States, including area, stand age, forest type, and carbon stocks, and comparisons of these patterns with those from satellite imagery and simulation models. The USDA Forest Service collected ground-based measurements of tree and plot information in recent decades as part of nationwide forest inventories. Using these measurements together with a methodology for estimating carbon stocks for each tree measured, we mapped county-level patterns across the western United States. Because forest ecosystem properties are often significantly different between hardwood and softwood species, we describe patterns of each. The stand age distribution peaked at 60-100 years across the region, with hardwoods typically younger than softwoods. Forest carbon density was highest along the coast region of northern California, Oregon, and Washington and lowest in the arid regions of the Southwest and along the edge of the Great Plains. These results quantify the spatial variability of forest characteristics important for understanding large-scale ecosystem processes and their controlling mechanisms. To illustrate other uses of the inventory-derived forest characteristics, we compared them against examples of independently derived estimates. Forest cover compared well with satellite-derived values when only productive stands were included in the inventory estimates. Forest types derived from satellite observations were similar to our inventory results, though the inventory database suggested more heterogeneity. Carbon stocks from the Century model were in good agreement with inventory results except in the Pacific Northwest and part of the Sierra Nevada, where it appears that harvesting and fire in the 20th century (processes not included in the model runs) reduced measured stand ages and carbon stocks compared to simulations.  相似文献
