Hundreds of chemical contaminants have been identified in the Great Lakes System of North America. Depending on the agency or organization, various subset lists of these contaminants have been identified as chemicals of potential concern. However, there is no agreement on the method that should be used to make management decisions. Except for consensus on approximately 40 chemicals that most North American agencies agree can cause deleterious effects if released into the environment, no agreement has been reached regarding the priority that contaminants should receive for further action. That leaves hundreds of chemicals that have been, are being, or potentially could be released into the environment that have not been evaluated yet. A profile for potential chemicals of concern is generally thought to include persistence in the environment, potential to bioaccumulate, and ability to cause toxic effects at environmentally relevant concentrations. Except for the International Joint Commission’s definition of persistence (> 8 weeks residence time in air, water, soil or sediment), there is little concurrence about what defines these characteristics. For instance, the State of Michigan currently has no established definitions or profiles of persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic substances. Furthermore, there is no standard process to rank chemicals relative to these characteristics. The Chemical Scoring and Ranking Assessment Model (SCRAM) has been developed to provide a process to rank-order chemicals based on these characteristics. The SCRAM system was developed primarily for use in the Great Lakes region of North America and particularly in Michigan, but it is not site-specific. Use of this system may assist in pollution prevention activities and other future chemical control efforts, allowing attention to be focused first on those chemicals likely to present the greatest hazard.  相似文献

Data from an environmental hazard profile, including different tests on accumulation and degradation as well as Daphnia acute toxicity were used for a classification of chemicals into three categories: High hazard potential, uncertain hazard potential, and low likelyhood of environmental hazard. Directive 79/831/EEC came into force on 18th September 1981, enabling all the Member States of the EEC to classify so-called “new chemicals” with respect to their potential hazard to the environment and to human health on a standardized basis (Directive 79/831/EEC, Annex VII). The authors are of the opinion that the assessment of the “environmental hazard” of new chemicals before they are placed on the market, represents, in the present critical economic /ecological situation, which practically all the Member States have in common, a particular challenge to the scientific community and the competent authorities. The comments aim to achieve the following - to provide a more precise definition of certain key terms and to point out a way of selecting from the bundle of new chemicals those (few) which are potentially hazardous; a way which is clear to the administration, the scientific community, industry and, not least of all, to the individual as taxpayer and consumer.  相似文献

Partial order theory and Hasse diagrams appears to be a promising tool for decision-making in environmental issues. Alternatives or objects are said to be partial ordered when it is impossible to find a mutual relationship (< or >) for all criteria. This is often the case in complicated real life situations. However, sometimes it is attractive to apply a total order, i.e. linear rank, and not just the partial order. Based on ranking probabilities and linear extensions it is possible to derive a total order. A linear extension is a projection of the partial order into a total order that comply with all the relations in the partial order. When all linear extensions are known the ranking probabilities can be found as the probability for an object to occupy a specific rank. However, the total number of linear extensions is proportional with the faculty of the number of objects in the partial order. Therefore it is practically impossible to identify all possible linear extensions for partial orders with more than around 20 objects. This study reviews and evaluates a method which estimates the ranking probability based on sampling of a minor random fraction of the linear extensions. Using standard statistics the necessary number of random linear extensions is described as a function of the ranking probability estimate and the restrictions on the confidence interval around the ranking probability. The analysis reveals a smaller systematic uncertainty, which occurs due to the random selection of ranking between two incomparable objects. The discrepancy appears to be dependent on the structure of the partial order. The method using random linear extensions thus appears as a valuable tool for analysing larger partially ordered sets, which are practically impossible to handle using the total set of linear extensions.  相似文献

Ionization-based air cleaners can emit high concentrations of ozone. With the aim to limit the ozone concentration below the standard value in actual use conditions, we propose a standard procedure for testing and ranking the ozone emission of air cleaners. It is demonstrated by testing 27 samples of air cleaners that ozone emission rate can be measured in an airtight environmental chamber, by applying a generation-decay model to the concentration increase curve. The results indicate that deposition velocities vd on chamber wall surfaces need to be better characterized so that the ozone emission of a tested product could be characterized by a three-parameter model. The model takes into account actual room sizes and surface material deposition effects to predict ozone concentrations in indoor applications. This procedure accounts for ozone decay effect in an explicit manner and allows using alternative testing chamber sizes other than as specified in the current Underwriters Laboratory standard.  相似文献

Air toxics emission inventories play an important role in air quality regulatory activities. Recently, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) staff compiled a comprehensive air toxics emission inventory for 1996. While acquiring data on the mass of emissions is a necessary first step, equally important is developing information on the potential toxicity of the emitted pollutants. To account for the toxicity of the pollutants in the emission inventory, inhalation health benchmarks for acute effects, chronic effects, and cancer were used to weight the mass of emissions. The 1996 Minnesota emissions inventory results were ranked by mass of emissions and by an index comprised of emissions divided by health benchmarks. The results show that six of eight pollutants ranked highest by toxicity were also the pollutants of concern indicated in environmental monitoring data and modeling data. Monitoring data and modeling results did not show high impacts of the other two pollutants that were identified by the toxicity-based emission ranking method. The biggest limitation in this method is the lack of health benchmark values for many pollutants. Despite uncertainties and limited information, this analysis provides useful information for further targeting pollutants and source categories for control.  相似文献

Wide distribution, stability and long persistence in the environment of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), probably the best-known and most useful insecticide in the world, imposes the need for further examination of the effect of this chemical on human health and especially on the human genome. In this study, peripheral blood human lymphocytes from a healthy donor were exposed to 0.025 mg/L concentration of p,p'-DDT at different time periods (1, 2, 24 and 48 h). For the assessment of genotoxic effect, the new criteria for scoring micronucleus test and alkaline comet assay were used. Both methods showed that p,p'-DDT induces DNA damage in low concentration used in this research. Results of micronucleus test showed a statistically significant (p < 0.05) genotoxic effect of p,p'-DDT on human lymphocytes compared with corresponding control and a different exposure time. A comet assay also showed increased DNA damage caused in p,p'-DDT-exposed human lymphocytes than in corresponding control cells for the tail length. Results obtained by measuring the level of DNA migration and incidence of micronuclei (MN), nucleoplasmic bridges (NPBs) and nuclear buds (NBUDs) indicate the sensitivity of these tests and their application in detection of primary genome damage after long-term exposure to establish the effect of p,p'-DDT on human genome.  相似文献

This study aimed at cross-border mapping metal loads in mosses in eight European countries in 1990, 1995, and 2000 and at investigating confounding factors. Geostatistics was used for mapping, indicating high local variances but clear spatial autocorrelations. Inference statistics identified differences of metal concentrations in mosses on both sides of the national borders. However, geostatistical analyses did not ascertain discontinuities of metal concentrations in mosses at national borders due to sample analysis in different laboratories applying a range of analytical techniques. Applying Classification and Regression Trees (CART) to the German moss data as an example, the local variation in metal concentrations in mosses were proved to depend mostly on different moss species, potential local emission sources, canopy drip and precipitation.  相似文献

Ammonia, nitrous oxide, and methane emission from animal farming of South, Southeast, and East Asia, in 2000, was estimated at about 4.7 Tg NH3–N, 0.51 Tg N2O–N, and 29.9 Tg CH4, respectively, using the FAO database and countries’ statistic databases as activity data, and emission factors taking account of regional characteristics. Most of these atmospheric components, up to 60–80%, were produced in China and India. Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Indonesia, which were large source countries next to China and India, contributed more than a few percent of total emission of each atmospheric component. The largest emission livestock were cattle whose contribution was considerably high in South, Southeast, and East Asia; more than one-fourth of ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions: more than half of methane emission. The other major livestock for nitrous oxide and ammonia emissions were pigs. For methane emission, buffaloes were second source livestock. To provide spatial distributions of these gases, the emissions of county and district level were allocated into each 0.5° grid by means of the weighting by high-resolution land cover datasets. The regions with considerable high emissions of all components were able to be found at the Ganges delta and the Yellow River basin. The spatial distributions for ammonia and nitrous oxide emissions were similar but had a substantial difference from methane distribution.  相似文献

We have added the capability to simulate polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzo [p] dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzo-furans (PCDD/Fs) to the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system, thus taking advantage of the latter's capability to simulate atmospheric advection, diffusion, gas-phase chemistry, cloud/precipitation, and aerosol processes. The modifications reported here include the addition to the CMAQ system of two gas/particle partitioning models options: the Junge–Pankow adsorption model and the KOA absorption model, as well as chemical transformations and atmosphere/water surface exchange processes for these semi-volatile organics. Simulations for the purpose of model testing and validation were conducted for the years 2000 and 2002 on a domain covering most of North America. Both partitioning models give reasonable results when compared with available measurements. The model predictions of deposition and air concentrations also agree well with measurements. The modeling results also indicate that the long-range transport is important and anthropogenic emissions of PCBs and PCDD/Fs are dominant although surface exchange of PCBs may be important for some clean locations.  相似文献

The decision of intensive care unit (ICU) admission in acute pesticide poisoning is often challenging, especially in developing countries with limited resources. This study was conducted to compare the efficacy of the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II), Modified Early Warning Score (MEWS), and Poisoning Severity Score (PSS) in predicting ICU admission and mortality of acute pesticide-poisoned patients. This prospective cohort study included all patients admitted to Tanta University Poison Control Center with acute pesticide poisoning from the start of March 2018 to the end of March 2019. Patient data, including demographic and toxicological data, clinical examination, laboratory investigation, and score values, were collected on admission. Out of 337 acute pesticide-poisoned patients, 30.5% were admitted to the ICU, including those poisoned with aluminum phosphide (ALP) (81.5%) and organophosphates (OP) (18.5%). Most non-survivors (86.6%) were ALP poisoning. The PSS had the best discriminatory power in predicting ICU admission and mortality, followed by APACHE II and MEWS. However, no significant difference in predicting ICU admission of OP-poisoned patients was detected between the scores. Additionally, no significant difference in mortality prediction of ALP-poisoned patients was found between the PSS and APACHE II. The PSS, APACHE II, and MEWS are good discriminators for outcome prediction of acute pesticide poisoning on admission. Although the PSS showed the best performance, MEWS was simpler, more feasible, and practicable in predicting ICU admission of OP-poisoned patients. Moreover, the APACHE II has better sensitivity for mortality prediction of ALP-poisoned patients.

The use of the octanol/water partition constant (Kow) as a surrogate parameter for lipid/water partitioning of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) was reassessed by comparing the measured Kow of 12 selected polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCBs) with partition constants in triolein/water (Ktw) and membrane/water (Kmw) systems. Kow and Ktw were measured by the slow-stirring method. Kmw was measured by an adaptation of the slow-stirring method using suspensions of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylserine liposomes. Partitioning of POPs to octanol, triolein, and liposomes is similar but not equal. The log-log correlation for Kow and Ktw is excellent (r2 = 0.982) and that for Kow and Kmw is somewhat weaker (r2 = 0.856). Ktw values are greater than Kow by a factor of 1.6. Kmw of some PCB congeners exceed both Kow and Ktw by an order of magnitude. The differences are attributed to different PCB activity coefficients in the different lipid phases. The results imply that Kow can be used as a reasonable conservative estimate of lipid/water partitioning. But the observed differences between Kow and Kmw also indicate that using Kow to predict accumulation of POPs, particularly highly hydrophobic ones, in the polar lipids of organisms will underestimate their concentrations at equilibrium.  相似文献
