Summary Parasites of social insect workers can be transmitted within the colony to other, related host individuals or, alternatively, to unrelated workers of other colonies. Division of labour affects the probability of transmission, as young individuals often work inside the nest whereas older ones often leave the nest to forage. Therefore, the relative probabilities of transmission within-vs. between-nests is also affected by the delay between host infection and the shedding of propagules, i.e. the latent period of the parasite strain. We therefore hypothesized that strains of the flagellate parasite Crithidia bombi (Trypanosomatidae, Zoomastigophorea) infecting workers of the bumble bee Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera, Apidae) could differ in their delays and coexist in a population. This would be the case if strains that are shed after a short time delay were more efficiently transmitted to other colony members, whereas strains with long delays were more efficiently transmitted to non-related workers in the population. We tested this hypothesis by experimentally varying time delay and by allowing transmission to either sister workers from the same nest or unrelated workers from other nests. Transmission of C. bombi was measured as the number of parasitic cells shed by the exposed workers after a standard period. The results showed that relatedness as such had no effect, but that delay and nest identity were highly significant effects to explain variation in transmission success. There was a significant interaction between nest identity and delay, such that bees of some colonies acted as efficient transmitters for C. bombi under short delays and vice versa. We discuss how division of labour may affect parasitism in social insects and, vice versa, how division of labour may be under selection from the effects of parasitism, using available evidence from the literature. In order to control mosquito, different chemicals were applied against the larvae of Culex fatigans (Diptera Culicidae). The tested chemicals were Lambda cyhalothrin, chlorpyrifos, Azadirachta indica (Spindales meliaceae) neem extract, and Sueda monoica extract. All chemicals were found to have significant efficacy against Culex fatigans mosquito larvae. In terms of efficacy, the biochemical effects after treatment with such chemicals were found to vary. Total protein levels and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were the parameters examined. Chlorpyrifos, Lambda cyhalothrin, and neem elevated AChE activity levels whereas the plant extract S. monoica decreased enzymic activity. Total protein levels were decreased by Lambda cyhalothrin and chlorpyrifos whereas protein was increased by neem extract and S. monoica.  相似文献

Basking sharks occur throughout New Zealand, but are most common in cool temperate latitudes of 39-51°S. Inshore records from miscellaneous sources peaked in spring-summer, with few winter records. Two records were of sharks observed in a large brackish water lake. About 203 basking sharks were observed caught by commercial trawlers between 1986 and 1999. Multiple captures were common, including 14 in one tow. Most trawl-caught sharks were taken near or outside the 250 m depth contour, and 91% came from three small regions - East Coast (EC) and West Coast (WC) of South Island and Snares-Auckland Islands (SA). The highest catch (93 sharks) and catch rate (58 sharks per 1,000 tows) were from EC, where sharks were caught only in spring-summer. In SA, sharks were caught mainly in summer, and in WC all were caught in winter. The modal seabed depths for shark tows were 300-400 m at EC, 700-800 m at WC and 150-250 m at SA. Sharks were therefore caught in the deepest water in winter at WC. It was impossible to determine the actual depths of capture, but circumstantial evidence indicates that most sharks were caught on or near the bottom. The capture of some sharks in midwater in winter argues against hibernation, because hibernating sharks are unlikely to hover in midwater. Males dominated catches in all regions, particularly in WC and SA. In WC and SA, most sharks (94%) were 7-8 m long, whereas in EC most sharks (73%) were <7 m. Based on their lengths, many of the WC and SA males could have been mature, but most EC males were probably immature. Few of the females would have been mature. This study provides support for the hypothesis that basking sharks over-winter in deep water on the continental slope.  相似文献

•PAN concentrations at a rural site near Beijing were monitored from 2015 to 2019. •PAN concentrations exhibited high values in spring and low values in winter. •Anomalously southerlies induced extreme high PAN concentration in spring 2018. Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) is one of the most important photochemical pollutants and has aroused much concern in China in recent decades. However, few studies described the long-term variations in PAN in China. In this study, we continuously monitored the PAN, O3 and NOx concentrations at a regional background site near Beijing from August 2015 to February 2019. Based on the observed concentrations and climate data, we analyzed the seasonal PAN variations. The results revealed that the monthly mean PAN concentration ranged from 0.33–2.41 ppb, with an average value of 0.94 ppb. The PAN concentration exhibited a distinct seasonal variation, with high values in spring and low values in winter. After analyzing the corresponding meteorological data, we found that stronger ultraviolet (UV) radiation, a relatively longer lifetime and a higher background PAN concentration contributed to the high PAN concentrations in spring. In addition, with the utilization of the WRF-Chem (Weather Research and Forecasting with Chemistry) model, the cause of the extremely high PAN concentration in spring 2018 was determined. The model results demonstrated that an anomalously low pressure and the southwesterly winds in northern China might be the main causes of the increased PAN concentration in Beijing and its surrounding area in spring 2018.  相似文献

In various months of the years between 1960 and 1972, the R.R.S. “Discovery II” and R.R.S. “Discovery” carried out a number of echo-surveys in the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean between Latitudes 12° and 62°N, and from the European and African coasts to a longitude of approximately 29°W. The prime objective was to acquire data on sea-floor topography. In addition, numerous echo-traces of biological scattering present in midwater between depths of approximately 35 and 460 m were obtained. The traces were of variable quality, but were considered suitable for a preliminary evaluation of the scattering mainly as a basis for further investigation. The scattering recorded in daytime was broadly divisible into three types:
  1. Diffuse layers, which were probably due to dispersed single fish. These were not analysed further.
  2. Very small discrete echoes, mostly derived from single fish and very small shoals. These were mapped to show geographical regions of greater abundance.
  3. Larger discrete echoes, most of which were almost certainly given by fish shoals. These were analysed in detail and information obtained on depth distribution, shoal density, geographical distribution and relative abundance. Small and moderate-sized shoals were found to be very numerous in spring and summer in oceanic water to the West and North-west of the British Isles. Large numbers of shoals of various sizes were also observed at various time of the year in the Bay of Biscay and near certain parts of the European and African Continental Shelf, near certain seamounts, and near islands such as the Azores, Madeira, and the Cape Verde Islands. In general, shoals appeared to be relatively sparse in the more southerly temperate and subtropical regions of the open ocean. The depth distribution of shoals in open water varied greatly but, on average, the maximum daytime depth of those in the more southerly area of the survey was slightly greater than that of those in the more northerly area. Shoal size also varied, shoals to the north of Latitude 50°N were on average slightly smaller than those detected in southerly regins. Possible identification of the fish is discussed.

Population structure and production in Lumbrineris fragilis (O. F. Müller) based on samples collected from April 1981 to June 1983 were investigated. Based on the number of growth lines on the mandibles, the population of L. fragilis at Bjørnehode Bay in the Oslofjord could be divided into ten size classes, with the first six size classes being most commonly represented. There were strong indications that the dark bands in the mandibles were formed during winter and the light bands during summer. Neither seasonal changes in temperature nor gametogenesis were likely causes of dark band formation. A possible cause could be a reduction in feeding intensity during winter either due to changes in quantity or quality of available food. Production was calculated to be 1.32 g AFDW (ash-free dry weight) m-2 year-1 and the P/B ratio was 0.826. Chemical analysis of the mandibles showed that, in L. fragilis, calcium was present in highest concentrations while smaller quantities of copper, zinc, iron, phosphorous and sulphur were also recorded.  相似文献

In the Sargassum region on the coast of Mukaishima, in the Inland Sea of Japan, the phytal animals living on Sargassum serratifolium, and the alga itself as a habitat for phytal animals, were studied from August, 1966 to August, 1968. The standing crop of Sargassum/m2 bottom was 4.93 kg/m2 (March, 1967) and 3.53 kg/m2 (February, 1968) in the most luxuriant season, and 0.4 to 0.5 kg/m2 (July, 1967 and 1968) in the off-season. The individual number of phytal animals per mean plant, without sessile fauna, reached a maximum in late winter and early spring (about 130,000 in 1967, 266,000 in 1968) when Sargassum was luxuriant, and a minimum in summer (about 15,000 in both years) when Sargassum was declining. Among the phytal animals, benthonic copepods (Harpacticoida) were very abundant in most seasons. Their dominance decreased in spring, whilst nematode dominance increased. It appears that such seasonal changes are closely related to the standing crop of S. serratifolium. Fluctuations in numbers of most groups of the meiofauna of phytal animals, such as foraminiferans, ostracods, isopods, amphipods, copepods, tanaids and nematodes, are connected with changes in the standing Sargassum crop. Seasonal fluctuations of some groups, such as echinoderms, actinians, mysids and decapod crustaceans (macrofauna), were, however, independent of Sargassum crop variations. The individual number of phytal animals/m2 bottom in the Sargassum region were compared with findings of previous studies in other habitats, such as naked sandy and mud bottoms.Contribution No. 100 from the Mukaishima Marine Biological Station.  相似文献

The importance of sexual selection in hybridization between species that evolved in allopatry is poorly understood. Even less is known about differences between populations in their resistance or susceptibility to genetic introgression with a congener. Here we examine behavioral differences between populations of the native Pecos pupfish (Cyprinodon pecosensis) and their potential effects in facilitating or retarding hybridization with an introduced congener, the sheepshead minnow (C. variegatus). We quantified competitive interactions, establishment of territories, and mating success of several naturally occurring C. pecosensis populations and an artificially created laboratory population (control) against C. variegatus. Experiments were conducted in large outdoor tanks during the summer months when high temperatures favor breeding activity in pupfish. C. pecosensis populations differed in agonistic behavior, territoriality, and in mating success when competing against C. variegatus. Differences in the competitive ability of males from different C. pecosensis populations suggest that the rate of introgression with C. variegatus may vary, depending on the population of C. pecosensis it comes in contact with. Our results suggest that large, stable C. pecosensis populations may be relatively resistant to hybridization with C. variegatus. Interpopulation variation in male behavior, shaped by sexual selection, may be important in determining the incidence and rate of hybridization between the two congeners. Experimental studies are a powerful tool in elucidating behavioral processes, such as the action of intrasexual selection, that facilitate or retard the coalescence of lineages through initial hybridization and subsequent genetic introgression after secondary contact between allopatric species.Communicated by M. The diets of fish from the tropical Embley Estuary in the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia, were analysed with particular reference to piscivory and predation on juveniles of commercially important penaeid prawns from October 1986 until July 1988. Of the 77 species caught, 52 were piscivorous, and of these 37 ate penaeid prawns. The most numerous piscivores wereScomberoides commersonianus, Arius proximus, Lates calcarifer, Polydactylus sheridani andRhizoprionodon acutus, the first four of which accounted for over 90% of all prawns eaten. Twenty species are commercially important species of prawns. The proportions of penaeids in the diets varied seasonally, according to the density of penaeids in the estuary. The proportion was highest during the pre-wet period (November) and lowest during the dry period (July–August). Predation on prawns was highest in the lower and middle reaches of the river. Estimates of the rates of predation on the two most common juvenile commercial prawns,Penaeus merguiensis andP. semisulcatus, are presented and discussed.  相似文献

Recent calls for the development of ecosystem-based fisheries management compel the development of resource management tools and linkages between existing fisheries management tools and other resource tools to enable assessment and management of multiple impacts on fisheries resources. In this paper, we describe the use of the Chesapeake Bay Fisheries Ecosystem Model (CBFEM), developed using the Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) software, and the Chesapeake Bay Water Quality Model (WQM) to demonstrate how linkages between available modeling tools can be used to inform ecosystem-based natural resource management. The CBFEM was developed to provide strategic ecosystem information in support of fisheries management. The WQM was developed to assess impacts on water quality. The CBFEM was indirectly coupled with the WQM to assess the effects of water quality and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) on blue crabs. The output from two WQM scenarios (1985-1994), a baseline scenario representing actual nutrient inputs and another with reduced inputs based on a tributary management strategy, was incorporated into the CBFEM. The results suggested that blue crab biomass could be enhanced under management strategies (reduced nutrient input) when the effective search rate of blue crab young-of-the-year's (YOY's) predators or the vulnerability of blue crab YOY to its predators was adjusted by SAV. Such model linkages are important for incorporating physical and biological components of ecosystems in order to explore ecosystem-based fisheries management options.  相似文献
