Monitoring of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by passive sampling on the Danish island Funen (Fyn) show that the concentration of nitrogen dioxide is low (2–20 ppb). The level of NO2 in rural and suburban areas is governed by imported airpollution, and elevated NO2 concentrations due to local traffic are of limited importance. These results are supported by diffusion denuder measurements of nitric acid (HNO3) and particulate nitrate. Measurements of NO2 with chemiluminescence and diffusive passive sampling showed good agreement between the methods. The special mounting device for the diffusive samplers used in this work seem to have reduced the turbulence at the open end of the tube. The product from the reaction between nitrogen dioxide and triethanolamine was investigated and tentatively identified as triethanolamine N-oxide, which is in accordance with the observed 1 : 1 stoechiometry in the conversion of NO2 to nitrite ions.  相似文献

There is a requirement to verify the performance of sorbent-based passive or active samplers and to extend their use, where possible, to monitor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are known to be photochemical ozone pre-cursors or are relevant to the activities of the petrochemical industry. We report measurements of the 14-day diffusive uptake rates for the VOCs: i-butane (2-methyl propane), n-butane, i-pentane (2-methyl butane), n-pentane, n-hexane, benzene, toluene, and m-xylene (at environmental level concentrations) for industry standard axial samplers (Perkin–Elmer-type samplers) containing the sorbents Carbopack-X, -Z, -B or Tenax-TA. We also present data on back-diffusion, blank levels, and storage for the above sorbents, and describe the simultaneous use of the sorbent Carbopack-X for pumped sampling of certain VOCs. The results were obtained by dosing samplers in a controlled atmosphere test facility (CATFAC) operating under well-defined conditions of concentration, nominal temperature of 20 °C, wind speed of 0.5 m s?1, and relative humidities of 0% and 80%. Field measurements were also obtained to provide supplementary data to support the laboratory study. Results are compared to existing published data, where these are available.  相似文献

In this paper, a new method to calculate the average spatial distribution of air pollutants based on diffusive sampling measurements and artificial neural networks evaluation is presented. Most established methods like interpolation algorithms are inflexible or limited in considering important distribution parameters such as emission sources or land use. Of special interest are air quality measurements since they provide a direct view on the actual pollutant level. With diffusive samplers, the average concentration of many gaseous species over a large area can be determined simultaneously. During a project in Cyprus, NO2 diffusive samplers were exposed at 270 sites in six month-long campaigns throughout one year providing the database for the model described in this paper. A multilayer perceptron was trained with the NO2 measurement data and distribution parameters like population density and meteorological parameters using a 1 × 1 km grid covering Cyprus. The best fit could be achieved with an emissions inventory including previously simulated concentration plumes and population density data as input nodes for the neural network, resulting in realistic maps of the annual average distribution of NO2 in Cyprus.  相似文献

Air and precipitation measurements at five sites were undertaken from 2001 to 2003 in four different provinces in China, as part of the acid rain monitoring program IMPACTS. The sites were located in Tie Shan Ping (TSP) in Chongqing, Cai Jia Tang (CJT) in Hunan, Lei Gong Shan (LGS) and Liu Chong Guan (LCG) in Guizhou and Li Xi He (LXH) in Guangdong. The site characteristics are quite varied with TSP and LCG located relatively near big cites while the three others are situated in more regionally representative areas. The distances to urban centres are reflected in the air pollution concentrations, with annual average concentrations of SO2 ranging from 0.5 to above 40 μg S m−3. The main components in the airborne particles are (NH4)2SO4 and CaSO4. Reduced nitrogen has a considerably higher concentration level than oxidised nitrogen, reflecting the high ammonia emissions from agriculture. The gas/particle ratio for the nitrogen compounds is about 1:1 at all the three intensive measurement sites, while for sulphur it varies from 2.5 to 0.5 depending on the distance to the emission sources. As in air, the predominant ions in precipitation are sulphate, calcium and ammonium. The volume weighted annual concentration of sulphate ranges from about 70 μeq l−1 at the most rural site (LGS) to about 200 μeq l−1 at TSP and LCG. The calcium concentration ranges from 25 to 250 μeq l−1, while the total nitrogen concentration is between 30 and 150 μeq l−1; ammonium is generally twice as high as nitrate. China's acid rain research has traditionally been focused on urban sites, but these measurements show a significant influence of long range transported air pollutants to rural areas in China. The concentration levels are significantly higher than seen in most other parts of the world.  相似文献

Over a distance of approximately 800 km simultaneous measurements of total gaseous mercury (TGM) were performed at four sampling sites between Stockholm and Berlin. The time resolution of mercury concentration measurements was 5 min. During the sampling period from 26 June to 7 July 1995, event sampling for precipitation was carried out using bulk samplers. In addition to the mercury data, the most common meteorological and air-quality parameters were determined. Comparing the TGM background concentrations at the four sites, a weak but statistically significant south-to-north declining TGM gradient was found. From the most southern sampling site to the northern most site median values of 1.93, 1.78, 1.53 and 1.54 ng m-3 TGM were detected. Compared with the median TGM concentration observed at the two Swedish sites, the regional background concentration near Berlin was elevated by about 25%. Whereas the 0.5 h average TGM concentration varies at the Swedish sampling sites in a very narrow range of only 0.69 ng m-3, a much broader range of 3.28 ng m-3 was observed at the southern sites. The increased TGM variability near Berlin was characterised by a diurnal cycle with a distinct maximum in the early morning hours (about 4:00 a.m.) before sun rise. The short time variability of the TGM concentration measured at the four sites on the south-to-north transect shows regional differences. A decreasing variability from the most southern to the most northern site became evident.  相似文献

Intensive pesticide use leads to the contamination of water, soil and atmosphere. Atmospheric transport is responsible for pesticide dispersal over long distances. In this study, we evaluate the local dispersal of pesticides from agricultural to urban areas. For this purpose, three high-volume samplers, each equipped with a glass fiber filter and XAD-2 resin for the sampling of particulate and gas phase have been placed in a south-west transect (predominant wind direction) characteristic of rural and urban areas. The urban site (Strasbourg centre) is situated in the middle of two rural sites. Samples were taken simultaneously at three sites during pesticide treatments in autumn and spring 2002–2003. Sampling took place for 24 h at a flow rate of 10–15 m3 h−1. The pesticides studied were those commonly used in the Alsace region for all crops (maize, cereal, vines …). Many of the pesticides analysed in atmospheric samples were not detected or observed very episodically at very low concentrations. For metolachlor, alachlor, trifluralin, atrazine and diflufenican, higher concentrations were observed, essentially during the application of these compounds. Moreover, some “spraying peaks” were observed for alachlor in the south rural site (near crops) at a level of 31 ng m−3 on 16–17 May 2003. These results show site and time dependence of atmospheric contamination by pesticides. A limited dispersal was also observed especially in the urban area during the application periods of pesticides.  相似文献

Membrane-enclosed copolymer (MECOPs) samplers containing crystalline copolymers of ethylvinylbenzene-divinylbenzene in polyethylene membranes were used to assess the influence of a steel complex on the level and spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ambient air. MECOPs were deployed at six sites in Pohang, Korea for 37 days (August 9, 2005–September 14, 2005). Fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, and fluoranthene were dominant PAHs with the highest contribution of phenanthrene (59%) to the total amount of vapor-phase PAHs. The spatial distribution of total PAHs in the vapor phase ranging from 76 to 1077 ng MECOP−1 and air dispersion modeling suggested that the steel complex was the major PAH source in Pohang. It was revealed that the major wind directions rather than the distance from the steel complex were a significant factor affecting the levels of PAHs at the sampling sites. Finally, we tried to convert MECOP concentrations (ng MECOP−1) to air concentrations (ng m−3) with the modified sampling rates (m3 day−1). This study demonstrates again that passive air samplers are useful tools for spatially resolved and time-integrated monitoring of semivolatile organic compounds (SOCs) in ambient air.  相似文献

Ground-based, high-resolution measurements of downward atmospheric thermal emission spectra are reported for a northern mid-latitude location for summer and winter conditions. These measurements clearly show the presence of the 11.3-μm thermal emission band of nitric acid situated between 850–920 cm−1. By using the FASCOD3 line-by-line radiation code to simulate the background thermal emission, the measured seasonally averaged surface radiative forcing due to nitric acid is determined to be 0.055 W m−2±15%. The zenith column amounts of nitric acid are found to vary between 7.9×1015 and 1.1×1016 molecules cm−2±15%. An estimation is made of the contribution of nitric acid to the direct radiative forcing of the Earth's surface since pre-industrial times for northern mid-latitudes. This work suggests that nitric acid may play a role that is comparable to that of other greenhouse gases, such as CFC-11, in the forcing of the Earth's climate system. Under polluted conditions, nitric acid may contribute about half of the radiative forcing that is currently associated with tropospheric ozone.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured together with inorganic air pollutants at two urban sites and one rural background site in the Banja Luka area, Bosnia and Hercegovina, during 72 h in July 2008 using a high time resolution (5 samples per day) with the aim to study the spatial and temporal variabilities and to explore the significance of averaging effects inherent to 24 h-sampling. Measurement uncertainty was quantified on basis of three independent side-by-side samplers, deployed at one of the sites.PAH abundances in the urban and rural environments differed largely. Levels at the urban sites exceeded the levels at the rural site by >100%. The discrepancy was largely dominated by emission of 3–4 ring PAHs in the city, while 5–6 ring PAHs were more evenly distributed between city sites and the hill site. During the night a higher fraction of the semivolatile PAHs might have been stored in the soil or sorbed to surfaces. PAH patterns were undistinguishable across the three sites. However, concentrations of more particle-associated substances differed significantly between the urban sites than between one of the urban sites and the rural site (3σ uncertainty). Time-averaging (on a 24 h-basis) would have masked the significant inter-site differences of half of the substances which were found at different levels (on a 4 h-basis).  相似文献

Atmospheric deposition of lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) was investigated near the former Black Angel Pb–Zn mine in Maarmorilik, West Greenland during 2010–2011. Thalli of the lichen Flavocetraria nivalis were transplanted from an uncontaminated site into sites near the mine and collected the following year. At 20 of the total 21 sites, concentrations of Pb, Zn and Cd were significantly elevated in lichens after 1 year of transplantation compared to initial concentrations. Elevated concentrations were observed within a distance of approx. 20 km from the mining area. Concentrations decreased with increasing distance from the mine and the relation was well described using a power function with a negative exponent (r2 = 0.90; 0.83 and 0.83 for Pb; Zn and Cd). To examine the relation between metal concentrations/uptake in lichen transplants and atmospheric bulk deposition, 10 Bergerhoff dust samplers were placed near lichen transplants and samplers and lichens were collected after a 7-weeks exposure period. A significant linear correlation was observed between metal concentrations in lichen transplants and atmospheric bulk metal deposition (r2 = 0.94; 0.88 and 0.89 for Pb; Zn and Cd). Combining the results and including an area distribution within a defined metal deposition area, the “annual” deposition of Pb, Zn and Cd as dust was estimated during the 2010–2011 snow-free period (~5 months). The results reveal that 20 years after mine closure, 770 kg Pb, 3700 kg Zn and 24 kg Cd were still being deposited as dust per year (snow-free period only) within a distance of 20 km from the mine.  相似文献

The gas phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-PAHs in the atmosphere of five European countries (Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Sweden) were measured simultaneously during two 21-day passive sampling campaigns using semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs). SPMD samplers, consisting of a pair of SPMDs covered by a metal umbrella, were deployed at 40 locations ranging from remote and rural to urban and industrial, at a similar time during each of the two sampling campaigns (autumn 1999, except in Poland, winter 1999, and summer 2000). The total amounts of PAHs and nitro-PAHs found in the SPMDs ranged between 5.0–1.2×103 and 1.1×10−3–4.0 ng SPMD−1 day−1, respectively. The measured environmental sampling conditions were similar between sites and, thus, the variations in the SPMD data reflected the spatial differences in gas phase concentrations of nitro-PAHs and PAHs within and between countries. The gas phase concentrations of nitro-PAHs and PAHs found in East Europe (Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland 1999) were 10 times higher than those measured in Sweden, Austria and Poland in 2000. In each country, the levels of PAHs and nitro-PAHs differed by one–three orders of magnitudes amongst sampling sites. The highest within-country spatial differences were found in Poland where levels of PAHs and nitro-PAHs were about one and two orders of magnitudes, respectively, higher in winter 1999 than in summer 2000, probably due to increasing emissions of coal combustion for residential heating. Differences in PAH-patterns between sites were visualized by the multivariate projection method, principal component analysis (PCA). However, no specific source patterns were found, probably since imissions rather than emissions were measured, so the PAHs detected at many sites originated from multiple sources.  相似文献

For over one year, the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County (EPCHC) in Tampa, Florida, operated two dichotomous sequential particulate matter air samplers collocated with a manual Federal Reference Method (FRM) air sampler at a waterfront site on Tampa Bay. The FRM was alternately configured as a PM2.5, then as a PM10 sampler. For the dichotomous sampler measurements, daily 24-h integrated PM2.5 and PM10–2.5 ambient air samples were collected at a total flow rate of 16.7 l min−1. A virtual impactor split the air into flow rates of 1.67 and 15.0 l min−1 onto PM10–2.5 and PM2.5 47-mm diameter PTFE® filters, respectively. Between the two dichotomous air samplers, the average concentration, relative bias and relative precision were 13.3 μg m−3, 0.02% and 5.2% for PM2.5 concentrations (n=282), and 12.3 μg m−3, 3.9% and 7.7% for PM10–2.5 concentrations (n=282). FRM measurements were alternate day 24-h integrated PM2.5 or PM10 ambient air samples collected onto 47-mm diameter PTFE® filters at a flow rate of 16.7 l min−1. Between a dichotomous and a PM2.5 FRM air sampler, the average concentration, relative bias and relative precision were 12.4 μg m−3, −5.6% and 8.2% (n=43); and between a dichotomous and a PM10 FRM air sampler, the average concentration, relative bias and relative precision were 25.7 μg m−3, −4.0% and 5.8% (n=102). The PM2.5 concentration measurement standard errors were 0.95, 0.79 and 1.02 μg m−3; for PM10 the standard errors were 1.06, 1.59, and 1.70 μg m−3 for two dichotomous and one FRM samplers, respectively, which indicate the dichotomous samplers have superior technical merit. These results reveal the potential for the dichotomous sequential air sampler to replace the combination of the PM2.5 and PM10 FRM air samplers, offering the capability of making simultaneous, self-consistent determinations of these particulate matter fractions in a routine ambient monitoring mode.  相似文献

Atmospheric concentrations of and personal exposure to benzene have been measured in four French metropolitan areas for 210 subjects over two seasons. Half of the volunteers were 6–13-year-old children. The adult subjects were non-smokers, not occupationally exposed and they live and work in the monitored areas. Measurements were performed using diffusive samplers followed by GC-FID analysis. The average values for ambient air concentrations (μg m−3) were: Rouen: 1.5; Île de France (Paris area): 1.6; Grenoble: 2.3 and Strasbourg: 2.6, showing that benzene concentrations in the ambient air of the four cities satisfy the requirements of the European Directive 2000/69EC of the European Parliament which stipulates a limit value of 5 μg m−3. However, the 48 h exposures measured were found to be between 2.7 and 3.5 times higher than ambient air concentrations. As a consequence, 60% of the subjects investigated, including children, were exposed to concentrations higher than the ambient air limit value. This work confirms that air monitoring data collected by fixed stations should be used with caution when assessing population exposure to benzene, especially given the influence of indoor sources and other polluted microenvironments where people spend part of their time.  相似文献

There are inadequate measurements of surface ambient concentrations of mercury species and their deposition rates for the UK deposition budget to be characterized. In order to estimate the overall mercury flux budget for the UK, a simple long-term 1D Lagrangian trajectory model was constructed that treats emissions (1998), atmospheric transformation and deposition across Europe. The model was used to simulate surface concentrations of mercury and deposition across Europe at a resolution of 50 km×50 km and across the UK at 20 km×20 km. The model appeared to perform adequately when compared with the few available measurements, reproducing mean concentrations of elemental gaseous mercury at particular locations and the magnitude of regional gradients. The model showed that 68% of the UK's mercury emissions are exported and 32% deposited within the UK. Of deposition to the UK, 25% originates from the Northern Hemisphere/global background, 41% from UK sources and 33% from other European countries. The total mercury deposition to the UK is in good agreement with other modelling, 9.9 tonne yr−1 cf. 9.0 tonne yr−1, for 1998. However, the attribution differs greatly from the results of other coarser-scale modelling, which allocates 55% of the deposition to the UK from UK sources, 4% from other European countries and 60% from the global background atmosphere. The model was found to be sensitive to the speciation of emissions and the dry deposition velocity of elemental gaseous mercury. The uncertainties and deficiencies are discussed in terms of model parameterization and input data, and measurement data with which models can be validated. There is an urgent requirement for measurements of removal terms, concentrations, and deposition with which models can be parameterized and validated.  相似文献

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were measured in bulk deposition at three Danish rural forest sites with a mutual maximum distance of 450 km. At one of the forest sites concentrations in the ambient atmosphere were sampled from a 12 m high tower. Sampling was carried out within a period of 3 years with sampling intervals of 1–2 months. Mean bulk deposition fluxes were 1 ng m−2 yr−1 I-TEQ and deviated less than 30% between the sites. Yearly average PCDD/F concentrations in the atmosphere were 24 fg m−3 I-TEQ with maximum values in the winter period. During winter months atmospheric concentrations of PCDD/F and oxidized sulphur compounds showed a positive correlation, furthermore seasonal bulk deposition showed correlation between PCDD/F and sulphate.  相似文献

Chemical composition of precipitation was measured with wet-only samplers at a rural site at Bhubaneswar in eastern India during 1997–1998. All rain events were compared with trajectories and precipitation fields from the ECMWF. The pH and ionic concentrations were found to vary systematically with the origin of air and the amount of rainfall along the trajectory. A seasonal cycle for pH was found with a monthly median pH below 5.0 during October–December. The highest monthly median concentration of Ca2+ was found in May with 20 μmol l−1 and for SO42− in January with 52 μmol l−1. Samples with trajectories within 400 km from Bhubaneswar during the last 5 days were found to have a median pH slightly below 5.0 as an average. These samples also had the highest concentration for all measured ions, indicating large pollution sources within the region. Samples with continental origin showed a decrease of ∼70% in concentration if there had been rain during >50% of the last 5 days compared to rain during <50% of the last 5 days. High concentrations of Na+ and Cl were also found in continental samples. Resuspension of previously deposited sea salt is believed to be the reason. The data were compared with data from three other sites in western India and higher concentrations of almost all ions (NH4+ being the exception) compared to Bhubaneswar were found at the west coast in monsoon samples.  相似文献

We present two years (January 2007–December 2008) of atmospheric SO2, NO2 and NH3 measurements from ten background or rural sites in nine provinces in China. The measurements were made on a monthly basis using passive samplers under careful quality control. The results show large geographical and seasonal variations in the concentrations of these gases. The mean SO2 concentration varied from 0.7 ± 0.4 ppb at Waliguan on Qinghai Plateau to 67.3 ± 31.1 ppb at Kaili in Guizhou province. The mean NO2 concentration ranged from 0.6 ± 0.4 ppb at Waliguan to 23.9 ± 6.9 ppb at Houma in southern Shanxi. The mean NH3 concentration ranged from 2.8 ± 3.0 ppb at Shangdianzi in northeastern Beijing to 13.7 ± 8.4 ppb at Houma. At most sites, SO2 and NO2 peaked in winter and reached minima in summer, while NH3 showed maximum values in summer and lower values in cold seasons. On the whole, the geographical distributions of the observed gas concentrations are consistent with those of emissions. The ground measurements of SO2 and NO2 are contrasted to the SCIAMACHY SO2 and OMI NO2 tropospheric columns, respectively. Although the satellite data can capture the main features of emissions and concentrations of SO2, they do not reflect the variations of SO2 in the surface layer. The situation is better for the case of NO2. The OMI NO2 columns capture the geographical differences in the ground NO2 and correlate fairly well with the ground levels of NO2 at six of the ten sites.  相似文献

In the present work, a box model is applied to estimate the direct climate forcing of aerosol particles for rural air in Central Europe during summertime. In the model, the input parameters reflect regional character: data from satellite observations and other surface measurements are used referring to the selected area, Hungary. In the calculation of direct climate forcing of aerosol particles satellite observations serve as the source of incoming solar radiation intensity data and cloudiness, while different aerosol parameters of the model (mass extinction coefficient, chemical composition, scale height, hygroscopic growth factor, etc.) are based on local measurements. Finally, surface albedo of the area studied was determined on the basis of vegetation cover and precipitation amount. As the summary of our calculations, in Central Europe direct climate forcing of ammonium sulfate is equal to –2.4 W m−2. The climate forcing of total carbon is composed of two terms. The forcings due to scattering and absorption are –1.0 and +0.2 W m−2, respectively. In spite of the fact that the mass concentrations of ammonium sulfate and total carbon are similar, their contribution to the aerosol direct forcing is different. We conclude that ammonium sulfate plays the major role in this process and organics have an additional impact.  相似文献

Overall dry deposition velocities of several elements were determined by dividing measured fluxes by measured airborne concentrations in different particle size ranges. The dry deposition measurements were made with a smooth surrogate surface on an automated dry deposition sampler (Eagle II) and the ambient particle concentrations were measured with a dichotomous sampler. These long-term measurements were made in Chicago, IL, South Haven, MI, and Sleeping Bear Dunes, MI, from December 1993 through October 1995 as part of the Lake Michigan Mass Balance Study. In general, the dry deposition fluxes of elements were highly correlated with coarse particle concentrations, slightly less well correlated with total particle concentrations, and least well correlated with fine particle concentrations. The calculated overall dry deposition velocities obtained using coarse particle concentrations varied from approximately 12 cm s−1 for Mg in Chicago to 0.2 cm s−1 for some primarily anthropogenic metals at the more remote sites. The velocities calculated using total particle concentrations were slightly lower. The crustal elements (Mg, Al, and Mn) had higher deposition velocities than anthropogenic elements (V, Cr, Cu, Zn, Mo, Ba and Pb). For crustal elements, overall dry deposition velocities were higher in Chicago than at the other sites.  相似文献

Sampling and analysis of carbonaceous compounds in particulate matter presents a number of difficulties related to artefacts during sampling and to the distinction between organic (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) during analysis. Our study reports on a comparative analysis of OC, EC and WSOC (water-soluble organic carbon) concentrations, as well as sampling artefacts, for PM2.5 aerosol in three European cities (Amsterdam, Barcelona and Ghent) representing Southern and Western European urban environments. Comparability of results was ensured by using a single system for sample analysis from the different sites. OC and EC concentrations were higher in the vicinity of roads, thus having higher levels in Amsterdam (3.9–6.7 and 1.7–1.9 μg m−3, respectively) and Barcelona (3.6–6.9 and 1.5–2.6 μg m−3) than in Ghent (2.7–5.4 and 0.8–1.2 μg m−3). A relatively larger influence of secondary organic aerosols (SOA), as deduced from a larger OC/EC ratio, was observed in Ghent. In absolute sense, WSOC concentrations were similar at the three sites (1.0–2.3 μg m−3). Positive artefacts were higher in Southern (11–16% of the OC concentration in Barcelona) than in Western Europe (5–12% in Amsterdam, 5–7% in Ghent). During special episodes, the contribution of carbonaceous aerosols from non-local sources accounted for 67–69% of the OC concentration in Western Europe, and for 44% in Southern Europe.  相似文献
