On 28 and 29 November 2005, the tropical storm Delta struck the Canary Islands (Spain) and the western shores of Morocco. Gravimetric and radiometric measurements carried out in atmospheric aerosol and water samples, collected after the storm, showed increased levels of total suspended particles (TSP) in the atmosphere and gross alpha, gross beta as well as 90Sr activities in both the atmosphere and drinking water. These variations were most likely produced by local re-suspension of soil material. However, 210Pb and 7Be activities, measured in atmospheric aerosols, did not increase until a week after the storm had passed. 40K and 137Cs activities, also measured in atmospheric aerosols, did not vary significantly with respect to previous weeks indicating that the slightly higher levels of TSP, measured during the week when the storm occurred, were not produced by the long-range transport of re-suspended aerosols from the African continent, as it has been observed in other occasions at this site. Gross alpha, gross beta, 40K and 90Sr levels in drinking water samples increased after the storm over their average values by approximately 245%, 245%, 130% and 440%, respectively. These results indicate how important the local re-suspension and later deposition/scavenging of aerosols may be on the water supply in Tenerife.  相似文献

Leaves of linden (Tilia tomentosa L. and Tilia cordata Mill.) and horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) were analysed as biomonitors of radionuclides in urban air. Samples of soils, leaves and aerosols were collected in Belgrade, Serbia. Activities of 137Cs, 40K, 210Pb and 7Be in the samples were measured on an HPGe detector by standard gamma spectrometry. “Soil-to-leaves” transfer factors were calculated. Student’s t test and linear Pearson correlation coefficients were used for statistical analysis. Differences in local conditions at the sampling sites were not significant, and the mechanisms of the radionuclides’ accumulation in both plant species are similar. Ceasium-137 was detected in some of the leaf samples only. Transfer factors for 137Cs and 40K were (0.03–0.08) and 1.3, respectively. The concentrations of 210Pb and 7Be in leaves were higher in autumn than in spring, and there were some similarities in their seasonal patterns in leaves and in air. Weak to medium correlation was obtained for the 210Pb and 7Be activities in leaves and aerosols. Large positive correlation was obtained for the 210Pb activities in linden leaves and the mean activity in aerosols for the preceding months. Different primary modes of radionuclides accumulation in leaves were observed. Since large positive correlation was obtained for the 210Pb activity in linden leaves and the mean in aerosols for the preceding months, mature linden leaves could be used as biomonitors of recent 210Pb activity in air.  相似文献

The Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station (PBAPS) has contributed measurable quantities of radioactivity to Conowingo Reservoir, an impoundment of the lower Susquehanna River. As part of an ongoing radiological assessment program, concentrations of plant-related radionuclides in sediments have been monitored in spring and fall since 1980. Mass balance estimates derived from grab samples of surface sediments (< 10 cm) indicate that less than 20% of reactor released (60)Co, (65)Zn, (134)Cs and (137)Cs is present in these sediments. Significant seasonal variations in radionuclide trapping efficiency by the reservoir are not apparent. Deep core samples (c. 200 cm) confirm that some, but not all, of this surface sediment radionuclide inventory remains within the reservoir-trapped in discrete locations by subsequent sediment accumulation. The remaining radionuclide mass, in dissolved or particle-associated form, appears to be transported downstream, through Conowingo Dam, to upper Chesapeake Bay. The detection of PBAPS-derived radionuclides in the sediments of upper Chesapeake Bay, primarily the Susquehanna Flats, confirms the transport of these radionuclides from the lower Susquehanna River.  相似文献

Time series of levels of atmospheric particulate matter (TSP and PM10) were studied at 19 air quality monitoring stations in the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) during the period 1998–2000. After analysing seasonal variations, attention was focused on the detection of high TSP and PM10 events and on the identification of their natural or anthropogenic origins. Back-trajectory analysis and TOMS-NASA aerosol index as well as satellite imagery (SeaWIFS-NASA) were used to identify three types of African dust outbreaks differing in seasonal occurrence, source origin and impact on TSP/PM10 levels. Mean annual and daily TSP and PM10 levels were compared with the forthcoming limit values of the EU Air Quality Directive EC/30/1999, and the results showed that the annual and daily limit values established for 2010 would only be met at rural stations. PM levels at urban background, urban and industrial sites would exceed the 2010 objectives. Only the levels at the urban-background stations would meet the requirements for 2005 despite the fact that the trade winds result in lower levels of atmospheric pollutants in the Canary Islands than in continental environments. The results highlight the role of African dust contributions when implementing the limit values of the EU directive.  相似文献

CRS and SIT are two (210)Pb-based models widely used in the radiometric dating of recent sediments. (210)Pb chronologies should be validated using at least one independent tracer, such as (137)Cs. This paper demonstrates that simple methods based on the identification of (137)Cs fallout peaks cannot provide a definitive support for CRS and SIT chronologies. Two main arguments will support this assertion: Firstly, the (137)Cs time-marks cannot support a CRS or SIT chronology if the derived sedimentation rates cannot explain the whole (137)Cs activity profile without postulating mixing. Secondly, the support by the (137)Cs time-marks for a given CRS or SIT chronology cannot be considered as definitive if other dating models can equally explain the whole set of data, thereby producing a different chronology. Several case studies selected from the literature are used to support the present discussion.  相似文献

The transfer of radioactive caesium from soils to plants has been well researched. In contrast there is limited knowledge on natural stable 133Cs and its potential role as a predictor for radiocaesium behaviour. In a pot experiment with Agrostis capillaris close correlations were found between plant 137Cs and plant 133Cs concentrations (R2 90-96%). Season and leaf age had significant effects with concentrations increasing 10-30-fold between June and December. Simultaneously the plant concentrations of K, the nutrient analogue of Cs, decreased to around one third. In the soil the exchangeable fractions of K and 137Cs declined. No clear relationships were found between 137+133Cs in the plant and exchangeable K in the soil. However, at the end of the experiment the K content of the above-ground biomass was higher than the exchangeable pool in the soil, suggesting that depletion of soil K could be a key factor in the observed increase of plant 137+133Cs over time.  相似文献

This paper presents the hourly evolution of a severe Saharan dust outbreak, (SDO), affecting Central Spain over July 23-24, 2004 measured with a laser remote sensing device at a location close to the Guadarrama mountain range foothills and its impact on PM10 levels (particles with an aerodynamic diameter below 10 microm) recorded at four contrasting monitoring stations located in the upper and lower Spanish plateau, some 170km apart. During the period of study the Saharan dust layer, (SDL), presented significant hourly variability in height (3600-1500m), depth (1500-700m) and aerosol dust loading (extinction coefficient, EC, 0.22-1.28km(-1)). Overnight layering was generally observed whereas a well mixed layer prevailed in the afternoon. The (SDO) impact on the lower levels took place approximately 12h after the (SDL) was initially observed and triggered by a descending dust enriched, evidencing the important role of subsidence over the presence of dust in lower altitudes. During the event, PM10 levels at all the stations exceeded EU air quality daily mean standards, 50 microgm(-3), on 2-4days. The maximum values ranged from 185 to 245 microgm(-3) depending on the monitoring station. The impact on PM10 spread from 2days in the upper plateau to 3-4 in the lower plateau, in agreement with the geographical location of the monitoring stations with respect to the southwest origin of the intrusion. The impact was even more dramatic on PM10 hourly concentrations, leading to maximum hourly peaks ranging from 322 to 598 microgm(-3) again depending on the monitoring station. Correlations between EC vertical profiles and PM10 hourly concentrations at the monitoring stations showed the great influence of the (SDO) on surface concentrations. The best linear fits corresponded to the extinction coefficients in the lower altitudes (close to the lower range of the device 500-650m), EC2, yielding satisfactory correlation coefficients ranging from 0.68 to 0.71. The low variability of the slope of each individual linear fit, 19.2%, shows the similar impact of (SDO) on the PM10 hourly concentrations recorded in the area under study.  相似文献

Inhaca Island, southern Mozambique, is located towards the southerly latitudinal limits of coral reef growth. Reef development is restricted to the margins of channels which dissect intertidal flats on the Maputo Bay side of the island, and to depths of around 6 m. In contrast to lower latitude reefs, reef development is therefore both spatially and bathymetrically restricted (largely due to high turbidity levels). These natural stress levels were exacerbated, via increased freshwater and sediment discharge, during the severe floods of late 1999/early 2000. Flood impacts varied but were most significant on reefs on the inner (western) side of the island where live coral cover (LCC) decreased from 60.5% (1999) to 24.0% (2001). This is attributed to freshwater-induced bleaching. Dead in situ coral cover increased from 18.6% (1999) to 51.3% (2001). Reefs on the southern tip of the island, by contrast, were relatively unaffected. It is suggested that this largely reflects a closer proximity to the open Indian Ocean which mitigated the effects of freshwater dilution.  相似文献

To better understand the current physical and chemical properties of East Asian aerosols, an intensive observation of atmospheric particles was conducted at Gosan site, Jeju Island, South Korea during 2005 spring. Total suspended particle (TSP) samples were collected using pre-combusted quartz filters and a high-volume air sampler with the time intervals ranging from 3 h to 48 h. The kinds and amount of various organic compounds were measured in the samples using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Among the 99 target compounds detected, saccharides (average, 130 ± 14 ng m?3), fatty acids (73 ± 7 ng m?3), alcohols (41 ± 4 ng m?3), n-alkanes (32 ± 3 ng m?3), and phthalates (21 ± 2 ng m?3) were found to be major compound classes with polyols/polyacids, lignin and resin products, PAHs, sterols and aromatic acids being minor. Compared to the previous results reported for 2001 late spring samples, no significant changes were found in the levels of their concentrations and compositions for 4 years, although the economy in East Asia, especially in China, has sharply expanded from 2001 to 2005. During the campaign at Gosan site, we encountered two distinct dust storm episodes with high TSP concentrations. The first dust event occurred on March 28, which was characterized by a predominance of secondary organic aerosols. The second event that occurred on the next day (March 29) was found to be characterized by primary organic aerosols associated with forest fires in Siberia/northeastern China. A significant variation in the molecular compositions, which was found within a day, suggests that the compositions of East Asian aerosols are heterogeneous due to multi-contributions from different source regions together with different pathways of long-range atmospheric transport of particles.  相似文献

Vertical concentration profiles for NH3, HNO3 and HCl-gas and for NH4+, NO3, SO2−4, Cl and Na+ aerosol were obtained from a meteorological tower in the central part of the Netherlands. An upward NH3 flux of 0.12 μgm−2 s−1 was calculated from the NH3 profiles and meteorological data. From the HNO3 profiles a maximum HNO3 dry deposition velocity of 4 cm s−1 was calculated. Good agreement was found between the measured concentration products [NH3](g) × [HNO3](g) and the theoretical values at temperatures above 0°C and relative humidities below 80%. In other cases, higher NH3 and/or HNO concentrations in the gas phase were measured than theoretically predicted.  相似文献

The attachment rate of atoms and ions to the atmospheric aerosol indoors and outdoors was studied by means of the Tn(220Rn) decay products, which have a diffusion coefficient D = 0.068 cm2s−1 and a sticking probability S = 1. In a nuclei concentration range between 0.6–7 × 104 particles cm−3 the attachment rates were 0.009–0.05 s−1 (relative humidity : 30–50%) corresponding to a half-life of attachment 77 to 14 seconds. The change of the average nuclei size with humidity could be determined by measuring the attachment rate for different water vapour concentrations. By changing the humidity from 20% to about 100%, the average particle size increases up to a factor of 2.1.  相似文献

The objective was to investigate how tributyltin (TBT) contamination resulting from the establishment of a new marina and increasing yachting activities at Phuket Island, Thailand affects the area. A minimum of 30 specimen of the mangrove dwelling muricid Chicoreus capucinus were collected at five stations 2 months before and 5, 9, 18 and 33 months after Yacht Haven Marina was constructed. Imposex measured as RPLI and VDSI were significantly correlated to duration of time after construction and distance from the marina. All females developed imposex close to the marina after 18 months, whereas no significant increase occurred at stations more than 2 km from the marina. To evaluate the range of effects of the increasing yachting activities the muricid Thais distinguenda was used as an indicator of imposex at two popular mooring sites for yachts at Phi Phi and Raja Island in Phangna Bay, Thailand. The incidence of imposex was 100% at stations close to the mooring sites. A significant correlation existed between the distance from the sites and the incidence of imposex. The increasing incidence of imposex suggest that TBT contamination is worsening, against global trends, because regulations prohibiting the use of TBT-based paints, do not exist in Thailand.  相似文献

Microbial biomass carbon (Cmic) and soil enzyme activities were measured at 12 sites along a gradient of former emissions of phosphate fertilizer production. Seven years after close down of operation, still moderate to high total concentrations of the dust constituents cadmium (up to 33 mg kg-1 dw), fluoride (5300 mg kg-1 dw) and phosphorous (120,000 mg kg-1 dw) were found in topsoils of contaminated sites. Accumulation of partially decomposed plant matter, soil respiration and dehydrogenase activity paralleled the increase of dust deposits, whereas microbial biomass decreased along the gradient. A significant negative correlation was obtained between the Cmic-to-Corg-ratio and the concentration of contaminants. In contrast, the Cmic-specific respiration (qCO2) and the dehydrogenase activity-to-Cmic-ratio were positively correlated. The low Cmic-values and the enhanced activities in the contaminated soils are suggested as a response of microbial communities to environmental stress or ecosystem disturbances. The apparently missing detrimental effects of the alkaline deposits on soil microbial activities are probably due to the low bioavailability of contaminants in the calcareous soil.  相似文献

Airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been collected at two sites in the West Midlands conurbation, UK, representing urban background and rural locations. Chemical analyses have been carried out for major anions, trace metals, total OC and EC, and for individual organic marker species including n-alkanes, hopanes, PAHs, organic acids and sterols. Source apportionment has been conducted using both a pragmatic mass closure model and the US EPA chemical mass balance (CMB) model. The pragmatic mass closure model is well able to account for the measured PM2.5 mass in terms of chemical/source components, and the chemical mass balance model has been used to apportion the carbonaceous component of the aerosol. The dominant components of PM2.5 at both sites are secondary inorganic (sulphate and nitrate) and carbonaceous particles. The CMB model shows the latter to arise mainly from road traffic sources, with smaller contributions from vegetative detritus, wood smoke, natural gas, coal, and dust/soil. The CMB model also identifies an important component of the organic aerosol not associated with these primary sources, which correlates very strongly with secondary organic aerosol estimated from the OC/EC ratio. The split between different automotive source types does not relate well to UK emission inventories, and may indicate that CMB source profiles from North American studies and different carbon analysis protocols may lead to erroneous conclusions.  相似文献

The Mexico City Metropolitan Zone (MCMZ) presents important emissions of hazardous air pollutants. It is well documented that the MCMZ suffers a critical air pollution problem due to high ozone and particulate matter concentrations. However, toxic air pollutants such as benzene and toluene have not been considered. Benzene has accumulated sufficient evidence as a human carcinogen, and the ratio benzene/toluene is an excellent indicator to evaluate control strategies efficiency.In order to evaluate the levels of these two air toxic pollutants in the MCMZ, ambient air samples were collected in canisters and analyzed with a gas chromatograph with a flame ionization detector, according to procedures described in the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) method TO-15. Quality assurance was performed collecting duplicate samples which were analyzed in replicate to quantify the precision of air-quality measurements.Three different sites located in the Southwestern area in the MCMZ were selected for the sampling: the University campus, a gas station, and a vertical condominium area, in the same neighborhood, which presents different activities. At these sites, grab air samples were collected during the morning hours (7–8 a.m.), while for the University area, 24 h integrated air samples were collected simultaneously, with grab samples.Benzene concentrations (24 h sampling) in the atmosphere around the University campus have similar present levels as in other cities of North America. Mean values in this site were about 1.7 ppb.A significant variation exists between the benzene and toluene concentrations in the studied sites, being the more critical values than those registered at the gas station (an average of 25.8 ppb and a maximum of 141 ppb of benzene). There is a fuel regulation for gasoline in Mexico, which allows a maximum of 1 percent of benzene. However, since more than 60 percent of vehicles do not have catalytic converters (models before 1991) it is expected that most of this benzene be emitted through exhaust pipe. Another strategy being implemented is the use of vapor recovery systems at the gas stations. Vehicles emission control technology must be matched with adequate fuel characteristics in the problem area where it will be implemented, to achieve maximum emission reductions.  相似文献

The effects of pesticides (a herbicide and a fungicide) on the microbial community structure and their activity were analyzed in soil from four alpine pasture grasslands in Slovakia. Specifically, the effects of the herbicide, Gesagard (prometryn active ingredient), and fungicide, Fundazol 50 WP (benomyl active ingredient), on the microbial respiration activity (CO2 production), the numbers of selective microbial physiological groups (CFU.g?1) and the structure (relative abundance) of soil microbial communities [(phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA)] were analyzed under controlled laboratory conditions. All treatments including the treatments with pesticides increased (statistically significantly) the production of CO2 in all fields during 21 days of incubation and posed a statistically insignificant negative influence on the numbers of the observed physiological groups of microorganisms. The significantly negative influence was evaluated only in the numbers of two physiological groups; spores of bacteria utilizing organic nitrogen and bacteria, and their spores utilizing inorganic nitrogen. A shift in the microbial composition was evident when the PLFA patterns of samples from different sites and treatments were compared by the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). According to the second component PCA 2 (15.95 %) the locations were grouped into two clusters. The first one involved the Donovaly and Dubakovo sites and the second one contained the Velka Fatra and Mala Fatra locations. The PLFA composition of the soils showed important changes after the treatment with pesticides according to PCA 1 (66.06 %). Other treatments had not had a significant effect on the soil microbial community with the exception of the population of fungi. The lower relative abundance (significant effect) of Gram-positive bacteria, actinomycetes and general group of bacteria were determined in samples treated by the herbicide Gesagard. The application of fungicide Fundazol decreased (statistically significantly) the relative abundance of actinomycetes and general group of bacteria and paradoxically increased the population of fungi.  相似文献

Ozone uptake was studied in a pine forest in Tenerife, Canary Islands, an ecotone with strong seasonal changes in climate. Ambient ozone concentration showed a pronounced seasonal course with high concentrations during the dry and warm period and low concentrations during the wet and cold season. Ozone uptake by contrast showed no clear seasonal trend. This is because canopy conductance significantly decreased with soil water availability and vapour pressure deficit. Mean daily ozone uptake averaged 1.9 nmol m(-2) s(-1) during the wet and cold season, and 1.5 nmol m(-2) s(-1) during the warm and dry period. The corresponding daily mean ambient ozone concentrations were 42 and 51 nl l(-1), respectively. Thus we conclude that in Mediterranean type forest ecosystems the flux based approach is more capable for risk assessment than an external, concentration based approach.  相似文献
