Summary. In the present experiment the behaviour and endocrine status of males of the brown trout, Salmo trutta L., (Salmoniformes: Salmonidae) were studied when males were kept in a stream tank with a nest digging female. Groups of
mature adult males and precocious intact or anosmic male parr were placed with the nesting female so that the group resembled
a natural spawning situation with big anadromous fish acting as dominant males and precocious parr acting as “sneakers”. A
control experiment was also run with only males without a female present. In intact parr there were significant positive correlations
between the per cent of the total observation time spent with a female, milt volume, and plasma concentration of 17α, 20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one.
Anosmic parr had significantly lower volumes of strippable milt and gonadal steroid hormone levels compared with intact parr.
However, no differences were found in the control experiment. Significantly fewer anosmic parr attended and courted the nesting
female and those anosmic fish that attended the female had significantly lower plasma levels of gonadal hormones. Intact parr
also displayed a greater number of agonistic acts against other parr without any difference in fighting ability. No differences
in aggression occured in the control experiment. In adult males together with a female, post-experimental gonadal steroid
hormone levels were higher than pre-experimental levels. Positive correlations between aggression and androgen hormone levels
were observed in adult males. No differences in plasma hormone levels were observed between adult males and intact precocious
males. The results show that olfactory occlusion results in low steroid hormone levels and milt volumes in precocious males
placed in a spawning situation. The courting behaviour was also affected by anosmia. Odours from the nesting female may have
caused the enhanced plasma hormone levels and stimulated the males to attend the female.

Green radicalism among local environmental officials in Sweden is examined with the aims of theoretically elaborating on different dimensions of Green radicalism in the context of public administration, exploring the dimensionality of Green radicalism among officials, and examining the extent to which Green radicalism is associated with policy influence. Three types of Green radicalism are identified: Green ethics, Green institutional change, and Green activism. Survey data (N = 701) show that the three theoretical dimensions are present among officials, and that there is no negative association between radicalism and influence. It is primarily officials with Green activism beliefs who perceive themselves as able to influence policy. These findings suggest a need for more nuanced understanding of and further studies into the role of public administration in the quest for more radical Green reforms. 相似文献

This study investigates the possibility of capturing CO2 from flue gas under pressurised conditions, which could prove to be beneficial in comparison to working under atmospheric conditions. Simulations of two hybrid combined cycles with pressurised fluidised bed combustion and CO2 capture are presented. CO2 is captured from pressurised flue gas by means of chemical absorption after the boiler but before expansion. The results show a CO2 capture penalty of approximately 8 percentage points (including 90% CO2 capture rate and compression to 110 bar), which makes the efficiency for the best performing cycle 43.9%. It is 5.2 percentage points higher than the most probable alternative, i.e. using a natural gas fired combined cycle and a pulverised coal fired condensing plant separately with the same fuel split ratio. The largest part of the penalty is associated with the lower mass flow of flue gas after CO2 capture, which leads to a decrease in work output in the expander and potential for feed water heating. The penalty caused by the regeneration of absorbent is quite low, since the high pressure permits the use of potassium carbonate, which requires less regeneration heat than for example the more commonly proposed monoethanolamine. Although the efficiencies of the cycles look promising it will be important to perform a cost estimate to be able to make a fair comparison with other systems. Such a cost estimate has not been done in this study. A significant drawback of these hybrid cycles in that respect is the complex nature of the systems that will have a negative effect on the economy. 相似文献

The long-term stability of a biofilter loaded with waste gases containing NH3 concentrations larger than 100 ppmv was studied in a laboratory-scale compost reactor. At an empty bed residence time (tau) of 21 sec, elimination capacities of more than 300 g NH3/m3/day were obtained at elimination efficiencies up to 87%. Because of absorption and nitrification, almost 80% of the NH3-N eliminated from the waste gas could be recovered in the compost as NH4(+)-N or NO2-/NO3(-)-N. The high elimination capacities could be maintained as long as the NH4+/ NOX- concentration in the carrier material was less than 4 g NH4+/NOx(-)-N/kg wet compost. Above this critical value, osmotic effects inhibited the nitrifying activity, and the elimination capacity for NH3 decreased. To restore the biofilter performance, a carbon source (methanol) was added to reduce NH4+/NOx- accumulated in the compost. Results indicate that methylotrophic microorganisms did convert NH4+/NOx- into biomass, as long as the NO3- content in the compost was larger than 0.1 g NO3(-)-N/kg compost. Removal efficiencies of CH3OH of more than 90% were obtained at volumetric loads up to 11,000 g CH3OH/ m3/day. It is shown that addition of CH3OH is a suitable technique for regenerating the compost material from osmotic inhibition as a result of high NH3 loading. Most of the Swedish coastal fisheries are not sustainable from either a social, economic or ecological point of view. We propose the introduction of local fisheries management (LFM) as a tool for restructuring the present large-scale management system in order to achieve sustainability. To implement LFM two questions need to be answered: How to distribute the resource fish among different resource user groups? How to restructure present fisheries management to meet the criteria of sustainability? Starting from these questions we describe possible forms of LFM for Swedish coastal fishery supported by recent research. The biological and social preconditions for restructuring fisheries management are derived from an analysis of the ecological and managerial situation in Swedish fishery. Three types of LFM--owner based, user based, and community based management--are analyzed with regard to the tasks to be carried outin LFM, the roles of management groups, and the definition and optimal size of management areas. 相似文献

In this paper, we elaborate on the concept of ecological debt. Starting from the enriching environmental justice perspectives, this grass-roots concept has to offer to sustainability discourse, a broad conceptual discussion is presented resulting in a working definition for ecological debt. In elaborating on this definition, we try both to accommodate these enriching perspectives and to offer a more robust conceptualisation that is applicable in international sustainability discourse. Also, a scientifically sound methodology is presented which allows quantifying different aspects of ecological debt. There has been increased focus on recycling in Sweden during recent years. This focus can be attributed to external environmental factors such as tougher legislation, but also to the potential gains for raw materials suppliers. Recycling centres are important components in the Swedish total recycling system. Recycling centres are manned facilities for waste collection where visitors can bring, sort and discard worn products as well as large-sized, hazardous, and electrical waste. The aim of this paper was to identify and describe the main flows and layout types at Swedish recycling centres. The aim was also to adapt and apply production theory for designing and managing recycling centre operations. More specifically, this means using lean production principles to help develop guidelines for recycling centre design and efficient control.Empirical data for this research was primarily collected through interviews and questionnaires among both visitors and employees at 16 Swedish recycling centres. Furthermore, adapted observation protocols have been used in order to explore visitor activities. There was also close collaboration with a local recycling centre company, which shared their layout experiences with the researchers in this project.The recycling centres studied had a variety of problems such as queues of visitors, overloading of material and improper sorting. The study shows that in order to decrease the problems, the recycling centres should be designed and managed according to lean production principles, i.e. through choosing more suitable layout choices with visible and linear flows, providing better visitor information, and providing suitable technical equipment. Improvements can be achieved through proper planning of the layout and control of the flow of vehicles, with the result of increased efficiency and capacity, shorter visits, and cleaner waste fractions. The benefits of a lean production mindset include increased visitor capacity, waste flexibility, improved sorting quality, shorter time for visits and improved working conditions. 相似文献

Based on lake sediment data, archaeological findings, and historical records, we describe rapid transformations, resilience and resistance in societies and ecosystems, and their interactions in the past in the North Water area related to changes in climate and historical events. Examples are the formation of the polynya itself and the early arrival of people, ca. 4500 years ago, and later major human immigrations (different societies, cultural encounters, or abandonment) from other regions in the Arctic. While the early immigrations had relatively modest and localised effect on the ecosystem, the later-incoming culture in the early thirteenth century was marked by extensive migrations into and out of the area and abrupt shifts in hunting technologies. This has had long-lasting consequences for the local lake ecosystems. Large natural transformations in the ecosystems have also occurred over relatively short time periods related to changes in the polynya. Finally, we discuss the future perspectives for the North Water area given the many threats, but also opportunities. 相似文献

Summary. Sequestration of plant toxins in herbivores is often
correlated with aposematic coloration and gregarious behaviour. Larvae
of Pieris brassicae show these conspicuous morphological and behavioural
characteristics and were thus suggested to sequester glucosinolates that
are characteristic secondary metabolites of their host plants. P. rapaeare camouflaged and solitary, and are thus not expected to sequester. To
test this hypothesis and to check the repeatabi-lity of a study that did
report the presence of the glucosinolate sinigrin in P. brassicae,
larvae were reared on three species of Brassicaceae (Sinapis alba,
Brassica nigra and Barbarea stricta), and different leaf and insect
samples were taken for glucosinolate analysis. The major host plant
glucosinolates could only be found in traces or not at all in larval
haemolymph, bled or starved larvae, faeces or pupae of both species or
P. brassicae regurgitant. Haemolymph of both Pieris spp. was not
rejected by the ant Myrmica rubra in dual-choice assays; the regurgitant
of P. brassicae was rejected. This suggests the presence of compounds
other than glucosinolates that might be sequestered in or produced by P.
brassicae only. In faeces of both Pieris spp. a compound which yielded
4-hydroxybenzylcyanide (HBC) upon incubation with sulfatase was detected
in high concentrations when larvae had been reared on S. alba. This
compound may be derived from hydrolysis of sinalbin, the main
glucosinolate of that plant. The unidentified HBC progenitor was
apparently not sequestered in the two Pieris spp., and was not detected
in faeces of larvae reared on B. nigra or B. stricta.
