Lochnagar is a remote mountain lake to the south-east of the Cairngorm region in Scotland. Its catchment receives anthropogenic trace metals solely from atmospheric deposition. Ten peat cores were taken from the catchment and analysis confirmed that they have been contaminated by trace metals. The peats have an high affinity for trace metals and this results in metal accumulation in the surface peat layers. The formation of trace metal sulphides may also reduce remobilisation. In this way, trace metals derived from atmospheric deposition have been scavenged and accumulated. In contaminated peat layers, 77.4% Hg, 89.6% Pb, 93.4% Cu, 72.4% Zn and 86.5% Cd of the total stored are from anthropogenic sources. The accumulated trace metals in the peats can potentially influence the lake system through erosion. Spheroidal carbonaceous particle (SCP) profiles were used to date the peat cores. By referring to the SCP profiles in the peats and comparing these with the trace metal profiles in the lake sediments, the mobility of trace metals in the catchment peats is confirmed. 相似文献

Levels of acidic deposition have declined in Galloway over the last two decades. At the Round Loch of Glenhead this has led to a slight recovery from lake acidification, lake water pH rose by approximately 0.2 units between 1978 and 1989. The diatom flora of the lake has responded to this recovery and a clear floristic reversal dating to the late 1970s is apparent in the sediment cores studied. The detection of this reversibility trend, however, is dependent on the accumulation rate of individual cores. The trend could be detected only in cores with accumulation rates greater than 0.7 mm year(-1). It is also argued that sediment mixing has led to some loss of resolution of the sedimentary record. 相似文献

presented as a key element in the global scientific endeavour aimed at understanding human–environment interactions at the
present day and in the future. The paper explains the need for the focus on palaeoenvironmental studies as a means of ‘learning
from the past’, and presents the rationale and structure of the IGBP-PAGES Focus 5 programme ‘Past Ecosystem Processes and
Human–Environment Interactions’. The past, as described through palaeoenvironmental studies, can yield information about pre-impact
states, trajectories of recent change, causation, complex system behaviour, and provide the basis for developing and testing

Leaders of the PAGES Focus 5 programme ‘Past Ecosystem Processes and Human–Environment Interactions’ identify key issues for
research on human–environment interactions for wider discussion. These include the need for long-term perspectives, the opportunities
for maximising palaeoenvironmental research, the need for integration and regionalisation and the challenge of developing
dynamic simulation models. A new organisational matrix for regional studies is outlined, based on a series of zonal/azonal
regions and on the degree of human impact. Future priorities for palaeoenvironmental research include new studies in degraded
human-dominated landscapes, highly-valued ecosystems and sites relevant to other IGBP Core Projects. Simulation of future
human–environment interactions using modelling approaches that have been tested against long records lags behind global climate
modelling, but cellular approaches for biogeophysical and multi-agent systems show promise. 相似文献

We reconstruct the pre-acidification pH of the Round Loch of Glenhead for 1800 AD using three diatom-pH transfer functions and a diatom-cladocera modern analogue technique (MAT), and compare these palaeo-data with hindcast data for the loch using the dynamic catchment acidification model MAGIC. We assess the accuracy of the transfer functions by comparing pH inferences from contemporary sediment and sediment trap diatom samples from the lake with measured pH from the UK Acid Waters Monitoring Network. The results from the transfer functions estimate the pH in 1800 to have been between 5.5. and 5.7, the MAT approach estimates pH at 5.8 and the MAGIC hindcast (for 1850) is pH 6.1. Whilst we have no independent method of assessing which of these values is most accurate, the disagreement between the two approaches indicates that further work is needed to resolve the discrepancies. 相似文献
