The analysis of monitoring data with the aid of time-series analysis

Methods derived from time-series analysis are proposed for processing monitoring data. The necessity for the use of these methods is demonstrated. In a case study time-series analysis was applied to assess the impact of the closure of the Grevelingen estuary (S. W. Netherlands) in 1971 on a local wintering population of Oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus) in the adjacent Oosterschelde estuary.Communication No. 328 of the Delta Institute for Hydrobiological Research.     

Field scale variability of cadmium and zinc in soil and barley

CaCl₂-extractable soil Cd and Zn contents have been suggested as a measure of bioavailability. To investigate the ability of this measure to reflect spatial patterns of Cd and Zn concentrations in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in an arable field, plant and soil samples were taken from a 0.5 ha area sandy soil contaminated with Cd and Zn. Cd and Zn contents in barley and yield were spatially variable. Yield was low, which may have been caused by Zn toxicity or atrazine turnover. For Cd, CaCl₂-extractable soil contents explained only 17% of the variation in Cd contents in grain, and for Zn no significant correlation was observed. Nevertheless, surface plots of CaCl₂-extractable soil contents and contents of barley grain illustrated their corresponding spatial patterns. Despite the poor linear correlation between CaCl₂-extractable soil-Cd and grain-Cd, a stochastic model for long term behaviour of Cd in field soils predicted observed variability in Cd contents of barley grain well from spatial variability of soil pH and organic matter content. The probabilistic model predicted behaviour of Cd in terms of probability, and was more appropriate than the deterministic approach.

Chorionic villus sampling—short-term versus long-term culture in a subtle 2; 18 translocation

Prenatal diagnosis on chorionic villous tissue was performed for a woman with the karyotype 46,XX,t(2;18)(q32;q12)—a subtle ‘difficult’ translocation. The case illustrates the necessity of good quality cytogenetics for accurate prenatal diagnosis. For chorionic villi this can be obtained only with long-term culture.     

ANALYZING CORRELATIONS BETWEEN STREAM AND WATERSHED ATTRIBUTES1

ABSTRACT: Bivariate correlation analysis has been widely used to explore relationships between stream and watershed attributes that have all been measured on the same set of watersheds or sampling locations. Researchers routinely test H₀: ρ= 0 for each correlation in a large table and then go on to discuss only those that are declared “significant.” Such test results are inaccurate because no allowance is made for multiple testing, and also because the tests are not mutually independent. This paper reviews the Bonferroni approach to controlling the overall error rate in multiple testing and shows how the approach becomes impractical for large correlation tables. The Hotelling/Williams test is introduced for comparing two dependent correlations that share a variable, and numerical constraints for two such correlations are illustrated. References are also given for testing other hypothesized patterns among dependent correlations, and links to dependent correlation software are provided. The methods are illustrated for watershed and stream variables sampled in 23 small agricultural watersheds of the Willamette Valley, Oregon.
