Early development of the Antarctic sea urchin Sterechinus neumayeri was examined under two differ-ent culture regimes: one to simulate development near-bottom (“demersal development”) and the
other to simulate the development of embryos in the water column (“pelagic development”). When embryos of both treatments
reached the hatching blastula stage at 5 d post-fertilization (−1.5 °C), the blastulae that had undergone demersal development
evidenced significant differences (by ANOVA or suitable non-parametric comparison) in the following: a thicker blastoderm
layer (12%, P < 0.001), higher ash-free dry weights (19%, P < 0.01), lower mass-specific respiration rates (50%, P < 0.001), higher incorporation rates of 35S-methionine into protein (23%, P < 0.003), and a differential pattern of protein synthesis. When embryos developed demersally, they remained in the jelly-coat
material released with the eggs at spawning. Quantitative isolation of this jelly-coat material in S. neumayeri demonstrated that it contained a significant amount of organic matter, 115 ng ash-free dry mass per egg, equivalent to 17%
of the egg's initial organic mass. Uptake of external nutrients during embryogenesis may be a significant component of the
physiological energetics of this polar invertebrate by allowing the utilization of jelly-coat material released by a female
during spawning.

Some of the largest concentrations of dugongs (Dugong dugon) occur in the coastal waters of eastern Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Designation of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park
has prompted the development of a program for management of dugong hunting by the aboriginal communities of the region. Assessment
of the population by aerial surveys combined with monitoring of the aboriginal hunters' harvest suggest that the take is well
below the sustainable yield. However, the reproductive rate of dugongs is so low that it will be a decade before the status
of the population can be established. Therefore, a conservative management policy for dugongs is recommended while acknowledging
the rights of traditional hunters. Greater participation of the aboriginal communities in the management program is sought

The aim of this paper was to investigate the effects of nitrogen (N) deposition on tree N cycling and identify potential biomarkers forNdeposition. Between April and October 2002 extensive fieldwork was undertaken at Mardley Heath in Hertfordshire. This woodland, located adjacent to the A1(M) motorway, is exposed to high levels of atmospheric nitrogen oxides from the traffic. Measurements of 15N, in vivo nitrate reductase (NR) activity, tissue, xylem and surface nitrate concentrations as well as N concentration and growth were made along a 700-m transect at 90° to the motorway. The 15N data show that oxidised N from the road traffic is taken up by nearby trees and is incorporated into plant tissues. Our measurements of NR activities suggest elevated rates close to the motorway. However, xylem sap, leaf tissue and leaf surface nitrate concentrations showed no differences between the roadside location and the most distant sampling point from the motorway. Taken together the 15N and nitrate reductase data suggest uptake and assimilation of N through the foliage.We conclude that for this lowland deciduouswoodland, tissue, xylem and surface measurements of nitrate are unreliable biomarkers for N deposition whereas 15N, growth measurements and integrated seasonal NR might be useful. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been used extensively as brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in textiles, upholstery and electronics. They are ubiquitous contaminants in wildlife and humans. A low concentration of nonabrominated diphenyl ethers (nonaBDEs) is present in commercial DecaBDE and they are also abiotic and biotic debromination products of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209). The objective of the present work was to develop methods for synthesis of the three nonaBDEs, 2,2',3,3',4,4',5,5',6-nonabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-206), 2,2',3,3',4,4',5,6,6'-nonabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-207) and 2,2',3,3',4,5,5',6,6'-nonabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-208), with the intention of making them available as authentic standards for analytical, toxicological and stability studies, as well as studies regarding physical-chemical properties. Two methods were developed, one based on perbromination of phenoxyanilines and the other via reductive debromination of BDE-209 by sodium borohydride followed by chromatographic separation of the three nonaBDE isomers formed. An additional nonabrominated compound, 4'-chloro-2,2',3,3',4,5,5',6,6'-nonabromodiphenyl ether (Cl-BDE-208), was also synthesized in the present work. Cl-BDE-208, prepared by the perbromination of 4-chlorodiphenyl ether, may be used as an internal standard in analysis of highly brominated diphenyl ethers. BDE-206, BDE-207, BDE-208 and Cl-BDE-208 were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, electron ionization mass spectra and by their melting points. The razorback sucker ( Xyrauchen texanus ) is a large, long-lived catostomid fish endemic to the Colorado River drainage of western North America, endangered because of recruitment failure. Efforts to preserve the species have emphasized artificial propagation and reintroduction. Given the importance of maintaining genetic diversity in such a program, we examined mitochondrial DNA diversity in a source population (Lake Mohave, Arizona-Nevada) and three hatchery-produced year classes (1987, 1989, 1990). The source contained considerable variation, indicated by high haplotype diversity ( ĥ = 0.97) and a large number of unique haplotypes (17 in 25 individuals). Diversity also was high in the 1987 ( ĥ = 0.89, 6 haplotypes in 10 individuals) and 1989 hatchery-produced year classes ( ĥ = 0.91, 7 in 11), but significantly lower in the 1990 year class ( ĥ = 0.71, 4 in 10). Low diversity in the last class was likely because of differences among females in fecundity, viability of progeny, or both. Because natural populations have collapsed throughout the species' range, we must identify methods that preserve the most diversity. We examined three potential alternatives: standard hatchery propagation, natural spawning in predator-free environments, and protective custody of larvae collected from the lake with reintroduction after growth to a size likely to survive. The last is the preferred alternative and should be pursued as the most cost-effective option for preserving genetic diversity in the razorback sucker. 相似文献

Identification of hydroxylated metabolites in 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether exposed rats 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Faeces from day 1-5 of orally administered 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) in rat have been analysed for hydroxylated metabolites. Six hydroxylated tetrabrominated diphenyl ethers, as well as three hydroxylated tribrominated diphenyl ethers found, were structurally identified. They were 2'-hydroxy-2,4,4'-tribromodiphenyl ether, 3'-hydroxy-2,4,4'-tribromodiphenyl ether, 4'-hydroxy-2,2',4-tribromodiphenyl ether, 6-hydroxy-2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether, 2'-hydroxy-2,3',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether, 3-hydroxy-2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether, 5-hydroxy-2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether, 4'-hydroxy-2,2',4,5'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether and 4-hydroxy-2,2',3,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether. The analysis was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The identification of the hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ether (OH-PBDE) metabolites in the rat faeces was supported by similar relative retention times (RRTs) versus 2,2',3,4,4',5-hexabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-138) on two columns of different polarities compared to the authentic references. The identification of the OH-PBDE metabolites was also supported by full scan electron ionisation mass spectra. Most woody plants contain a diverse array of plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) that deter vertebrate herbivores. However,
mammalian folivores have evolved a complex of physiological and behavioural strategies to counter these compounds, leading
to the development of an “evolutionary arms race”. Marsupial folivores are ideal models to investigate the role of PSMs in
the interaction between the external foraging environment and the digestive physiology of mammalian herbivores, as we have
a very strong understanding of the diversity and modes of action of PSMs in Eucalyptus, as well as the mechanisms by which animals overcome the effects of these compounds. Studies of marsupial folivores have
benefited from the facts that: these herbivores subsist on relatively poor quality diets; they include feeding types from
specialist species such as the koala, to generalists; and life history factors such as maternal investment in reproduction
can be measured more easily than in eutherians. Here, we describe patterns of spatial variation in the types and distributions
of plant secondary metabolites in Australian forests and discuss how this variation influences foraging behaviour, habitat
selection and life history strategies in arboreal, folivorous marsupials. We also provide a summary of our understanding of
the mechanisms by which marsupials detect and regulate their intake of toxic compounds. While our examples are drawn largely
from studies of the interaction between marsupials and Eucalyptus, this knowledge is applicable to advancing our understanding of interactions in plant–mammal systems more broadly. We also

There is growing evidence that the sex ratios of wild vertebrate populations are determined by mechanisms that are directly
influenced by environmental characteristics. The Trivers–Willard (TWH) and extrinsic modification (EMH) hypotheses postulate
differing determinants of mammalian offspring sex ratios. TWH states that mothers allocate resources according to their current
condition and sex-specific offspring costs. EMH states that environmental forces that affect maternal condition determine
offspring sex ratios, independently of maternal tactics of sex-biased allocation. We statistically assessed support for each
of these hypotheses using long-term life histories of the allied rock-wallaby, Petrogale assimilis; a continuously breeding, polygynous, weakly dimorphic marsupial. We showed that birth sex ratios were equal and independent
of maternal and environmental conditions. However, secondary sex ratios were male-biased under good environmental conditions
and for high quality mothers or mothers in good condition. Sex differences in offspring survival contributed to these biases:
(1) environmental conditions strongly influenced survival to pouch emergence (in support of EMH) and (2) maternal quality
affected survival to the end of maternal care (in support of TWH). Environmental effects on survival were more important than
maternal factors over the entire period of maternal care and contributed most to male-biased sex ratios at pouch emergence.
In contrast, maternal mass was the best predictor of sex ratios at the end of maternal care—the life history stage where offspring
body mass differed between the sexes. 相似文献
