The Mormon cricket, Anabrus simplex, is one of just a few species of katydids (or bushcrickets, Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) that, like migratory locusts, appear to have solitary and migratory morphs. Using radio telemetry we studied movements of individuals of two morphs of this flightless species. Individuals within each migratory band had similar rates of movements along similar directional headings whereas solitary individuals moved little and showed little evidence of directionality in movement. Our results also add to other recent radio-telemetry studies showing that flightless insects of 1–2 g in mass can be tracked successfully using these methods. In katydids such as Kawanaphilanartee, a female bias in the operational sex ratio (OSR) results in female competition for mates and male choice of mates. Previous work showed that the excess of sexually active females occurs when food availability is low, in part because less food increases the propensity of females to mate as they forage for the large edible spermatophores produced by males. In this study with K.nartee, a pollen-feeding species, we estimate natural variation in numbers of sexually active males and females by assessing male calling activity and the propensity of females to respond to experimental calling males. We found an excess of sexually active males at a site with many flowers and an excess of sexually active females at a site with few flowers about 900 m away. Between-site differences in gut masses of calling males were consistent with the hypothesis that pollen availability controls OSR. Finally, at a third site where flowers were at first scarce, we found that the initial excess in sexually active females changed to an excess of sexually active males after a clump of grass-trees flowered. The mean gut mass of all sampled males from this site increased after flowering. The large variation in OSR that we document for K. nartee highlights the importance of identifying the appropriate spatial and temporal scales over which OSRs are measured in studies of factors controlling sexual selection. Female seed beetles, Callosobruchus maculatus, mate multiply even though association with males and copulations carry costs, such as injury to the genital tract. Multiple mating (polyandry) may, however, offset these costs through the acquisition of food and water, two material benefits hypothesized to be obtained from the large ejaculates produced by males. The material benefits hypothesis can be tested by increasing female access to nutrients and water, with the prediction that female mating frequency will decrease as copulation is no longer required to derive these materials. Females were given water, 5% sugar–water or baker’s yeast, and were compared with females deprived of these. We presented females with virgin males daily for 8 days and recorded female mating frequency, survivorship, and fecundity. Females provided with water and sugar–water decreased mating frequency. Thus, water, rather than nutrients in the ejaculate, appears to be important to females of this species. In addition, both life span and fecundity were extended for females in the sugar–water and water treatments. Since water is scarce in the arid environment in which this species is found, we conclude that polyandry provides material benefits to females that may offset some of the costs of associating with males.  相似文献

GEMS is an established, operational fact, a fact that has been with us for ten years. In 1975, following the instructions of the UN Conference on the Human Environment, UNEP moved into the field of environmental monitoring by establishing at its Nairobi Headquaters a Programme Activity Centre for GEMS. The role given to this Programme Activity Centre is to co-ordinate the disparate international monitoring activities that are conducted thoughout the world, particulary within the UN system, and to advise the Environment Fund of UNEP on how best to support and stimulate the initiation of new activities or the expansion of ongoing ones through the allocation of financial resources to these activities. The data gathered within the GEMS networks are used for assessment of the state of the environment and its trends, for better, more rational management of the environment and its natural resources. Ten years after it began the United Nations GEMS effort can be seen to be both fully operational and global in scope.  相似文献

Courtship feeding in katydids benefits the mating male's offspring   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary For species exhibiting courtship feeding it is typically argued that the food gift presented by males is a sexually-selected trait in serving to acquire fertilizations. An alternative hypothesis is that the trait is maintained by natural selection for parental investment in which the fitness of the mating male's offspring is increased. Here I argue that the spermatophylax, a nutritious part of the spermatophore provided to female katydids, Requena verticalis, functions mainly as parental investment. Previous research suggested that variation in the size of the male donation in this species (1) did not influence the ability of males to transfer ejaculates and (2) resulted in variation in offspring fitness. In the present paper genetic markers and radiolabels are used to show that the offspring are fathered by the males that donate the nutrients. Although these results indicate that the large spermatophylax is maintained by selection for increased parental investment, it is likely that this male offering originated in a sexual selection context whereby males fed females in order to obtain fertilizations.  相似文献

Summary Mating behaviour of the katydid Metaballus sp. varies. At sites QS and DB (in 1982) females competed for access to calling males and males chose mates by mating with heavier, more fecund females. At another site (BR) there was no evidence of role-reversal in reproductive behaviour, and males were observed to compete for mates. This species has a large spermatophore, a product of male reproductive glands, that is eaten by the female after mating. Males at the DB site had small reproductive glands. This suggests that some aspect of the QS and DB environments decreases spermatophore production; spermatophores become a limiting resource for females resulting in the reversal in reproductive roles observed at these sites. A field experiment that involved moving individuals from site BR to QS in 1983 determined that mating system was influerced by site (Table 1). At BR, males produced a continuous calling song, a third of the males observed attracted mates, and called for about 30 min before the female arrived; courtship duration was short. Males that were moved from BR to QS encountered a higher density of receptive females as all males attracted females after an average of just 3 min of calling. They changed their behaviour by producing short periodic bursts of song (zipping), and by courting females for long periods of time. The long courtship period may function as as a mate-assessment period for males. The reproductive behaviour of BR males moved to QS differed from that of native QS males only in the length of time spent in copula.  相似文献

The wide application of microalgae in the field of wastewater treatment and bioenergy source has improved research studies in the past years. Microalgae represent a good source of biomass and bio-products which are used in different medical and industrial activities, among them the production of high-valued products and biofuels. The present review focused on greywater treatment through the application of phycoremediation technique with microalgae and presented recent advances in technologies used for harvesting the microalgae biomass. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed. The microbiological aspects of production, harvesting and utilization of microalgae biomass are viewed.  相似文献

Secondary copulatory structures are well-known in male dragonflies and spiders. Here I report a secondary copulatory organ in female ground weta, Hemiandrus pallitarsis (Ensifera, Orthoptera - crickets and allies). The organ, located on the underside of the abdomen, appears to secure the male's genitalia during the transfer of a spermatophylax nuptial meal to this location, an area quite separate from the female's primary copulatory structures, where the sperm ampulla is attached.  相似文献

Summary In the digger wasp Philanthus bicinctus the first adult males emerge about a week before the first females. The sex ratio of emerging wasps is near unity. Females appear to mate once and do so when they first start to nest, not when they first emerge.Males defend mating territories in a large area of female ground nests. Territoriality begins when females first start to nest and throughout the season coincides with the digging activities of females initiating rests. During the day territoriality occurs only when females are engaged in digging activities.Males compete for certain territory sites within the resting area; the most frequently occupied male territories are in areas where the density of nests is highest. About half of the males are excluded from nesting area territories. Some of these males defend areas among the flowers of snakeweed where females occasionally forage; this appears to be a loser tactic of males unable to obtain nesting area territories.Although there was no significant difference in the sizes of males on nesting area and snakeweed territories, within the nesting area larger males usually occupy territories with the higher nest densities.  相似文献

Simulation tools are often used to establish pedestrian and evacuee performance. The accuracy and reliability of such tools are dependent upon their ability to qualitatively and quantitatively capture the outcome of this performance; i.e. whether the simulated agents perform the expected acts and take the expected amount of time to complete them. This article investigates the relationship between simulating individual agent actions and generating reliable emergent conditions (e.g. congestion). Once this relationship is established for a particular tool, it can then be used to investigate the conditions that may emerge in certain scenarios and mitigate against them. This article presents a simple framework for categorising real-world observations and then translating these observations into the simulated environment - extracting key information from the data collected to configure the simulation tool as required. The article addresses the qualitative benefits of representing individual-level actions, and, to a lesser degree, the quantitative benefits, although this effort is limited given the nature of the data. It tests this relationship using observations made at the Hajj, specifically the Sa’ee where large numbers of pilgrims perform religious rites in concert. Several scenarios are simulated using the buildingEXODUS model, enabling the importance of individual-level behaviours upon emergent conditions to be investigated, even when simulating relatively large crowds of up to 15,000 people.  相似文献
