The presence of domestic dogs Canis familiaris in public open spaces is increasingly controversial. In our review of the literature, we located 133 publications of various types (papers, reports etc.) that examine some aspect of dogs in parks and open spaces (50 % focussed solely on dogs). There has been an exponential growth in the cumulative number of articles (R 2 = 0.96; 82 % published since 1997); almost all pertain to temperate latitudes (97 %) and most to the northern hemisphere (62 %). Most articles focus on impacts on wildlife (51 %), zoonotic diseases (17 %), and people’s perceptions regarding dogs (12 %). Articles mostly describe problems associated with dogs, while reports of low compliance with dog regulations are common. We outline six major findings regarding dogs in parks: (1) there is a paucity of information on dogs in parks, particularly in relation to their interactions with wildlife and regarding their management; (2) published studies are mainly restricted to a handful of locations in developed countries; (3) sectors of societies hold different views over the desirability of dogs in parks; (4) the benefits and risks of dogs to humans and park values are poorly documented and known; (5) dogs represent a notable disease risk in some but not all countries; and (6) coastal parks are over-represented in the literature in terms of potential negative impacts. Park managers globally require better information to achieve conservation outcomes from dog management in parks.  相似文献

Abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) are currently being discussed as a promising means to increase the energy efficiency and sustainability of today's transport systems. While technological progress and cost reduction are certainly crucial topics for their successful diffusion, consumer acceptance is another issue that warrants further analysis. Based on a large online survey (N?=?969), we compared four consumer groups which differ in their likelihood to purchase an EV with regard to their socio-demographic characteristics, their willingness to pay (WTP) and their perceptions of EVs. The findings indicate that early users in Germany are most likely to be middle-aged men living with their families in a multi-vehicle household who have a higher WTP for an EV. Perceived compatibility of an EV with personal needs seems to be the most influential factor on the stated willingness to purchase an EV. With regard to the promotion of EVs, strengthening their environmental advantages and providing financial incentives for purchase are rated as important measures by a majority of the sample, while performance characteristics which are comparable to conventional vehicles seem to be less important for most participants. Based on the data analyses, we provide recommendations for measures regarding the further development and promotion of EVs.  相似文献

Standing stock and size composition of the zooplankton comunity (>100 m) were studied in four depth strata of the upper 200 m of the water column during a Meteor cruise to the central Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in spring 1987. The central Red Sea was divided into a northern area of higher salinity and a less saline southern part. Both areas exhibited significant differences in zooplankton abundance and standing stock. The latter increased by the ratio 1:2:3 from the northern central Red Sea to its southern part and further south to the Gulf of Aden. For size structure analysis samples were fractionated into three size classes (100 to 300, 300 to 500, 500 to 5000 m). In the central Red Sea the smallest size was dominant whereas in the Gulf of Aden the largest size fraction played a greater relative role than in the central Red Sea. This shift in size structure of the zooplankton community from the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden is apparently primarily related to ecosystem difference between both areas, leading to a change in species composition. In addition, size reduction of individual species common to both seas may be of some significance in the extreme environment of the Red Sea.  相似文献

Abstract

Some neighbourhood environments have become dumping grounds for locally unwanted land uses (LULUs) that middle-class Americans do not want near their homes. LULUs may combine with other pariah land uses to collectively undermine the quality of the local environment, reduce investment, government services, the proportion of middle-income people and associated businesses. As important neighbourhood attributes are lost, illegal activities, derelict structures, trash-strewn lots and the concentration of poor and unhealthy people may increase. This paper describes the theory behind the impact of pariah land uses through examples of the downward spiral experienced by Camden, New Jersey and the south Bronx, New York. It then documents the experience of one community, Elizabethport, New Jersey, in reversing that downward spiral. Success in Elizabethport came from the synergistic activities of local, state and federal governments, community groups, and not-for-profit organizations as they struggled to regain control through local environmental management, rebuilding, and reducing crime. Social capital was also strengthened by using a local community health concern—that of childhood asthma. Efforts to reverse the downward spiral of urban decay from pariah land uses should be multi-faceted, spurred by local efforts that address local concerns.  相似文献

We constructed a model of marten population dynamics and used it to investigate extinction processes across a wide range of parameter values. The model was based on rules governing the behavior and physiology of individual martens and focused on energy balance. Spatial dynamics and demographic and environmental stochasticity were incorporated. The outcome was the probability of extinction and quasiextinction (20 females remaining) over 500 years. Three qualitative forms of extinction were delineated. The first was deterministic extinction, associated with those parameter combinations leading to a negative population growth rate. The second was probabilistic extinction in systems with a strong positive growth rate but restricted population size due to habitat constraint. The transition from 100% persistence to 100% quasiextinction, as the input habitat size was decreased, was abrupt. The final form of extinction was in systems with a growth rate of approximately zero. Prey availability maintained an upper limit on these populations, but otherwise fluctuations in population size were essentially random, leading to nontrivial probabilities of extinction in even relatively large populations. A number of issues requiring further empirical research were identified. These included the relationship between habitat quality and marten reproduction, dispersal patterns and dispersal mortality, the effect of habitat edge on marten reproduction and mortality, and the characterization of the severity and frequency of catastrophic mortality as experienced by marten populations.  相似文献

At low temperature (3°C), and in the absence of substrate and cofactor, the enzyme, fructose diphosphatase (FDPase), extracted from liver of the benthic fishCoryphaenoides acrolepis, is reversibly inactivated by exposure to relatively low pressures (5,000 psi). At pressures of 20,000 psi at 3°C the native enzyme is irreversibly denatured. When the cofactor and the substrate are present, the enzyme is protected against pressure denaturation; hence, catalysis is insensitive to at least 10,000 psi at 3°C. Similarly, interactions between FDPase and its negative modulator adenosine monophosphate (AMP), are largely pressure insensitive. Pressure sensitivity of the native enzyme and of the catalytic process is much reduced at temperatures above about 9°C. The homologous enzyme from a surface fish,Pimelometopon pulchrum, is strikingly more sensitive to pressure, particularly at low temperatures.  相似文献
