Wind Characteristics of Mesquite Streets in the Northern Chihuahuan Desert, New Mexico, USA 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Past research has shown that the most important areas for active sand movement in the northern part of the Chihuahuan Desert
are mesquite-dominated desert ecosystems possessing sandy soil texture. The most active sand movement in the mesquite-dominated
ecosystems has been shown to take place on elongated bare soil patches referred to as “streets”. Aerodynamic properties of
mesquite streets eroded by wind should be included in explaining how mesquite streets are more emissive sand sources than
surrounding desert land. To understand the effects of wind properties, we measured them at two flat mesquite sites having
highly similar soil textures but very different configurations of mesquite. The differences in wind properties at the two
sites were caused by differences of size, orientation, and porosity of the mesquite, along with the presence of mesquite coppice
dunes (sand dunes stabilized by mesquites growing in the dune and on its surface) found only at one of the two sites. Wind
direction, u* (friction velocity), z0 (aerodynamic roughness height) and D (zero plane displacement height) were estimated for 15-m tower and 3-m mast data. These aerodynamic data allowed us to distinguish
five categories with differing potentials for sediment transport. Sediment transport for the five categories varied from unrestricted,
free transport to virtually no transport caused by vegetation protection from wind forces. In addition, “steering” of winds
below the level of the tops of mesquite bushes and coppice dunes allowed longer parallel wind durations and increased wind
erosion for streets that aligned roughly SW–NE.

Among a population of 6305 pregnant women, aged 25 to 34 years and estimated to be at no increased risk of genetic disease in the fetus, 4606 women participated in a randomized controlled trial of genetic amniocentesis between 1980 and 1984. In the study group having amniocentesis (2264 women), 23 fetal chromosome abnormalities (1.0 per cent) were found: eight autosomal aneuploidies, seven sex chromosome aneuploidies, seven balanced structural rearrangements and one case of a marker some. The structural rearrangements and the marker chromosome were all shown to be inherited. The study group seemed representative for the whole population of younger women at low genetic risk. Therefore, a 1.0 per cent total rate of fetal chromosome abnormalities, consisting of one-third autosomal aneuploidies, one-third sex chromosome aneuploidies and one-third structural rearrangements, may be expected in the second trimester in younger low-risk women. In the same period of time, 562 women in the same age group were offered amniocentesis because of an estimated increased risk of fetal genetic disease. The total rate of fetal chromosome abnormality in this ‘high-risk’ group was 0.9 per cent and thus no different from the rate in the low-risk group. 相似文献

Organotin compounds are widely used as biocides in marine and terrestrial environments. Several currently used techniques allow either the measurement of the chemicals or their effects on living organisms. Our current research focuses on the development of a complementary method based on a bacterial bioluminescence-based bioassay for the specific detection of organotin compounds. The performance of the bioassay was assessed. The Escherichia coli bacterial strain used in this study is specific for TBT and DBT (with Cl, Br or I as the halogen group) with the central tin atom important for light production. The assay is conducted after overnight culture of the bacterial strain, followed by 60 min of contact time with the organotin compound for significant light production. The detection limits were found to be 0.08 microM for TBT (26 microgl(-1)) and 0.0001 microM for DBT (0.03 microgl(-1)) with a linear range of one logarithm. The repeatability of the bioassay is 8% and the reproducibility for TBT and DBT was approximately 14%. Lyophilization of the strains did not significantly modify the detection limit as well as the range of detection. Applications of the bioassay to environmental samples are discussed. 相似文献

Terrestrial invertebrates are becoming widely established as tools to assess heavy metal pollution at contaminated sites. A practical and time saving method to sample terrestrial invertebrates consist of pitfall traps, often filled with a 4% formaldehyde solution and some detergent. The reliability of metal concentrations based on organisms captured and stored in this solution might however be questioned and we therefore tested the effect of formaldehyde on Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb concentration experimentally in three isopod species. Our results showed that in many cases, significant decreases in Cu concentrations compared to animals stored in a freezer were observed that could be as high as 40%, while Zn, Cd and Pb concentrations increased. A regression analysis of individual dry weight on individual size revealed that formaldehyde decreases the dry weight substantially and in that way causes increased measurements of Zn, Cd and Pb concentrations. We conclude that pitfall traps with formaldehyde should better not be used to collect animals in which concentrations of heavy metals or other toxic substances will be determined. 相似文献

A one-dimensional flow and transport model was developed to describe the movement of two fluid phases, gas and water, within a porous medium and the transport of 226Ra and 222Rn within and between these two phases. Included in this model is the vegetative uptake of water and aqueous 226Ra and 222Rn that can be extracted from the soil via the transpiration stream. The mathematical model is formulated through a set of phase balance equations and a set of species balance equations. Mass exchange, sink terms and the dependence of physical properties upon phase composition couple the two sets of equations. Numerical solution of each set, with iteration between the sets, is carried out leading to a set-iterative compositional model. The Petrov-Galerkin finite element approach is used to allow for upstream weighting if required for a given simulation. Mass lumping improves solution convergence and stability behavior. The resulting numerical model was applied to four problems and was found to produce accurate, mass conservative solutions when compared to published experimental and numerical results and theoretical column experiments. Preliminary results suggest that the model can be used as an investigative tool to determine the feasibility of phytoremediating radium and radon-contaminated soil. 相似文献

Emission factors for selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate emissions were developed while processing eight commercial grades of polycarbonate (PC) and one grade of a PC/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) blend. A small commercial-type extruder was used, and the extrusion temperature was held constant at 304 degrees C. An emission factor was calculated for each substance measured and is reported as pounds released to the atmosphere/million pounds of polymer resin processed [ppm (wt/wt)]. Scaled to production volumes, these emission factors can be used by processors to estimate emission quantities from similar PC processing operations. 相似文献

Sperm traits often show extreme variation both between and within species. Between-species variation may often be interpreted
in the context of a sperm competition theory, but within-species variation has remained unexplained. Previous studies on intraspecific
variation in sperm traits have focused on a limited set of variables and may have failed to explain observed variation because
of potential trade-offs between different sperm traits. We report on variation in number, size, motility and longevity of
sperm in the frog Crinia georgiana, a species where sperm competition is common. We found intrapopulation variation in sperm size and motility and interpopulation
variation in relative sperm number and size. When we combined relative sperm number and size into one variable, and motility
and longevity into another, we found significant interpopulation variation in these variables as well. We also detected considerable
intra- and significant interpopulation variation in cumulative sperm quality, a combination of all four sperm traits. Furthermore,
a significant effect of the interaction between population origin and male size on sperm characteristics indicated interpopulation
variation in the strength of selection acting on sperm traits of males adopting different mating strategies. We discuss heterogeneity
in the reproductive environment, a complex genetic background in the determination of sperm characteristics and varying levels
of developmental noise as potential contributors to the observed variation in sperm traits. 相似文献
