The South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB) of Alberta, Canada, is semiarid and under severe water stress due to increasing human demands. We present the first examination of projected changes in SSRB runoff from a large set of North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program regional climate models (RCMs) plus one Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment RCM. We used six different runoff estimation methods: total surface and subsurface runoff (total runoff), surface runoff, and four estimations based on Budyko functions. Most RCM estimations showed substantial biases and distribution differences when compared to observed data; thus bias correction was necessary. Total runoff was the best of the six variables in modeling observed runoff for each of the four SSRB subbasins. Projected total runoff for 2041–2070 shows a geographic gradient in the SSRB, with possible drying in the southern Oldman River subbasin and possible increased runoff in the northernmost Red Deer River subbasin. A shift to an earlier spring peak in runoff and drier late summer, with a need for increased irrigation, should be expected. In a first examination of the important question of projected changes in interannual variability, we show increasing magnitude. This result further adds to adaptation challenges over the course of this century in this basin, which is already largely closed to further allocation. 相似文献

Radioactive particles present a novel exposure pathway for members of the public. For typical assessments of potential doses received by members of the public, habit surveys and environmental monitoring combine to allow the assessment to occur. In these circumstances it is believed that the probability of encounter/consumption is certain. The potential detriment is assessed through sampling the use of environmental monitoring data and dose coefficients such as that in ICRP 60 [ICRP, 1990. 1990 Recommendations of the international commission on radiological protection. Publication 60. Annals of the ICRP 21 (1-3)]. However, radioactive particles often represent a hazard that is difficult to quantify and where the probability of encounter is less than certain as are the potential effects on health. Normal assessment methodologies through sampling and analysis are not appropriate for assessing the impact of radioactive particles either prospectively or retrospectively. Orb web spiders sit at the centre of their approximately circular webs when waiting for prey and so face many of the same
challenges as central-place foragers. Prey value decreases with distance from the hub as a function of prey escape time. The
further from the hub that prey are intercepted, the longer it takes a spider to reach them and the greater chance they have
of escaping. Several species of orb web spiders build vertically elongated ladder-like orb webs against tree trunks, rather
than circular orb webs in the open. As ladder web spiders invest disproportionately more web area further from the hub, it
is expected they will experience reduced prey gain per unit area of web investment compared to spiders that build circular
webs. We developed a model to investigate how building webs in the space-limited microhabitat on tree trunks influences the
optimal size, shape and net prey gain of arboricolous ladder webs. The model suggests that as horizontal space becomes more
limited, optimal web shape becomes more elongated, and optimal web area decreases. This change in web geometry results in
decreased net prey gain compared to webs built without space constraints. However, when space is limited, spiders can achieve
higher net prey gain compared to building typical circular webs in the same limited space. Our model shows how spiders optimise
web investment in sub-optimal conditions and can be used to understand foraging investment trade-offs in other central-place

Small scale co-composting of faecal matter from dry toilet systems with shredded plant material and food waste was investigated in respect to heat development and deactivation of faecal indicators under tropical semiarid conditions. Open (uncovered) co-composting of faecal matter with shredded plant material alone did not generate temperatures high enough (<55 °C) to reduce the indicators sufficiently. The addition of food waste and confinement in chambers, built of concrete bricks and wooden boards, improved the composting process significantly. Under these conditions peak temperatures of up to 70 °C were achieved and temperatures above 55 °C were maintained over 2 weeks. This temperature and time is sufficient to comply with international composting regulations. The reduction of Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Salmonella senftenberg in test containment systems placed in the core of the compost piles was very efficient, exceeding 5 log10-units in all cases, but recolonisation from the cooler outer layers appeared to interfere with the sanitisation efficiency of the substrate itself. The addition of a stabilisation period by extending the composting process to over 4 months ensured that the load of E. coli was reduced to less than 103 cfu?g and salmonella were undetectable. 相似文献

The oviposition preference and larval performance of the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella, was studied using Arabidopsis thaliana plants with modified glucosinolate (GS) profiles containing novel GSs as a result of the introduction of individual CYP79 genes. The insect parameters were determined in a series of bioassays. The GS content of the plants as well as the number of trichomes were measured. Multivariate analysis was used to determine the possible relationships among insect and plant variables. The novel GSs in the tested lines did not appear to have any unequivocal effect on the DBM. Instead, the plant characteristics that affected larval performance and larval preference did not influence oviposition preference. Trichomes did not affect oviposition, but influenced larval parameters negatively. Although the tested A. thaliana lines had earlier been shown to influence disease resistance, in this study no clear results were found for P. xylostella. 相似文献

The frequency distribution of total suspended particulate matter for Indianapolis, Ind., was examined in order to determine the precision associated with any given sampling scheme. By assuming a basic loge-normal distribution, a theoretical set of confidence intervals about the geometric mean was derived for random sampling. Verification of the loge-normal distribution was made for particulate matter in Indianapolis. Application of the derived confidence intervals revealed that for a 30-day period 20 samples must be taken to ensure that the 90% confidence interval will be within 10% of the geometric mean. Analysis of the records for 19 sampling locations within Indianapolis revealed that only 2 sites possessed sufficient data to allow monthly climatological evaluation over the period 1968-1970. 相似文献
