Objective
Women with high body mass index (BMI) tend to have reduced fetal fraction (FF) during cell-free DNA-based noninvasive prenatal screening (NIPS), causing test failure rates up to 24.3% and prompting guidelines that recommend aneuploidy screening other than NIPS for patients with significant obesity. Because alternatives to NIPS are only preferable if they perform better, we compared the respective sensitivities at different BMI levels of traditional aneuploidy screening and a customized whole-genome sequencing NIPS.Method
The relationship between FF, aneuploidy, and BMI was quantified from 58 105 patients screened with a customized NIPS that does not fail samples because of low FF alone. Expected analytical sensitivity as a function of aneuploidy and BMI (eg, trisomy 18 sensitivity when BMI = 35) was determined by scaling the BMI- and aneuploidy-specific FF distribution by the FF- and aneuploidy-specific sensitivity calculated from empirically informed simulations.Results
Across all classes of obesity and assuming zero FF-related test failures, analytical sensitivity for the investigated NIPS exceeded that of traditional aneuploidy screening for trisomies 13, 18, and 21.Conclusion

The investigation was carried out from 62°N to 73°N and from 14°E to 11°W in the Norwegian Sea during 19 June-12 July 1997. Regional differences in the phase of the seasonal development of the plankton community were evident, most pronounced across the Arctic front. In the Coastal and eastern Atlantic domains, post-bloom conditions prevailed, characterised by low chlorophyll a (chl a) levels and a phytoplankton assemblage dominated by coccolithophorids and small flagellates. During the study period, egg production rates of Calanus finmarchicus were low (<10 eggs female-1 day-1), older copepodite stages dominated, and the seasonal descent to deeper waters had started. In the Arctic domain, bloom conditions were evident by high chl a levels and a high abundance of large diatoms. Egg production rates were higher (a maximum of 29 eggs female-1 day-1), but the dominance of stages CI-CIII indicated that considerable spawning had already occurred prior to the spring bloom. The seasonal descent had barely started. Both invertebrate and fish predators were most abundant in the Coastal and eastern Atlantic domains, with abundance strongly decreasing north-westwards. No tight relationship between total abundance of invertebrate or fish predators and that of C. finmarchicus was apparent. However, a weak, but significant, relationship between abundance of young stages of chaetognaths and Euchaeta spp. versus young stages of C. finmarchicus was found, indicating that these invertebrate predators develop parallel to the development of the new cohort of C. finmarchicus. In early summer, C. finmarchicus had reached overwintering stages, and had started to accumulate in deeper waters in areas with the highest abundance of horizontally migratory planktivorous fish. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: In the Green Mountain state of Vermont, droughts of one form or another and of varying intensities, seventies, and areal extent are not uncommon occurrences. The 1990s were marked by at least three drought events of which the 1998 to 1999 was the most recent. In spite of this recurrence, ongoing drought monitoring and mitigative planning efforts are not as advanced as they could be and no official drought plan exists for the state. This article is the first of two in this volume. It summarizes the cascade of drought types that impacted the state during the 1998 to 1999 episode. From a number of precipitation statistics and drought indices, fine spatial scales (county or better) were found to best capture the character of drought impacts, while the weekly time step is recommended as the temporal unit around which to base planning and monitoring efforts. Consistent individual differences in boldness have been identified in many species and can have important effects on fitness.
In most animals, juveniles face different costs and benefits of risk-taking behavior than do adults. Furthermore, profound
changes in hormones, morphology and environment often occur when juveniles become adults. Therefore, the boldness of individuals
might change with ontogeny. In field crickets, adult males call to attract sexually receptive females, and male calling increases
predation risk. We measured the repeatability of boldness (latency to emerge from a safe refuge) in both male and female crickets.
Each cricket was tested once as a small nymph and once as an adult. We found that boldness was repeatable across metamorphosis
in females, but not in males. Males became less bold with maturation, a result that we predicted because of the risk associated
with calling for mates. We also found that in general, nymphs were bolder than adults and that individuals spent more time

Evolutionary theory suggests that divergent natural selection in heterogeneous environments can result in locally adapted plant genotypes. To understand local adaptation it is important to study the ecological factors responsible for divergent selection. At a continental scale, variation in climate can be important while at a local scale soil properties could also play a role. We designed an experiment aimed to disentangle the role of climate and (abiotic and biotic) soil properties in local adaptation of two common plant species. A grass (Holcus lanatus) and a legume (Lotus corniculatus), as well as their local soils, were reciprocally transplanted between three sites across an Atlantic-Continental gradient in Europe and grown in common gardens in either their home soil or foreign soils. Growth and reproductive traits were measured over two growing seasons. In both species, we found significant environmental and genetic effects on most of the growth and reproductive traits and a significant interaction between the two environmental effects of soil and climate. The grass species showed significant home site advantage in most of the fitness components, which indicated adaptation to climate. We found no indication that the grass was adapted to local soil conditions. The legume showed a significant home soil advantage for number of fruits only and thus a weak indication of adaptation to soil and no adaptation to climate. Our results show that the importance of climate and soil factors as drivers of local adaptation is species-dependent.
