Newark Bay, New Jersey, is particularly vulnerable to ecological damage from petroleum and chemical spills, as a result of the enclosed nature and shallow depth of the bay, the high frequency of shipping traffic, and the numerous chemical and petroleum transfer terminals located alongs its shores. To evaluate the potential impacts to the natural resources of this coastal estuarine ecosystem, chemical and petroleum accidents reported to the US Coast Guard (USCG) between 1982 and 1991 were compiled to determine the frequency and volume of these incidents in Newark Bay and in each of its major tributaries. Records obtained from the USCG National Response Center's computerized database indicated that more than 1453 accidental incidents, resulting in the release of more than 18 million US gallons of hazardous materials and petroleum products, occurred throughout Newark Bay during this period of time. The bulk of the materials released to the aquatic environment consisted of petroleum products, specifically No. 6 Fuel Oil (103 spills, 12 829 272 US gal) and gasoline (207 spills, 48 816 US gal). The majority of the reported incidents occurred in the Arthur Kill and its tributaries, as well as in the Kill Van Kull and the Passaic River. The results of this study indicated that the accidental discharge of petroleum and hazardous chemicals represents a significant source of chemical pollution in Newark Bay. Based on the frequency of spills and the volume of materials released to the aquatic environment, it is likely that these events are having a deleterious effect on the Newark Bay ecosystem.  相似文献

Exposure of the temperate sea anemone Anemonia viridis Forskål to increased seawater temperature (from 16 to 26°C) reduced the lysosomal latency of coelenterate tissues. Lysosomes in the mesenterial filaments of anemones were destabilised by increased temperature, with greater destabilisation in heat-shocked symbiotic anemones than in heat-shocked aposymbiotic anemones in the early stages of the experiment. Lysosomal enzyme activity in zooxanthellae from heat-shocked symbiotic anemones was associated with the algal membranes and the cytoplasm of degenerate algal cells. While the relationship between host coelenterate and symbiotic alga may confer many benefits under normal conditions, comparison of the responses of symbiotic and aposymbiotic anemones to heat shock suggests that there may be disadvantages for symbiotic anemones under stress.  相似文献

The radula (feeding organ) of the limpet Lottia gigantea is a membraneous ribbon to which are attached up to 150 transverse rows of teeth. The organic matrix of the teeth is impregnated with inorganic salts (Fe, Si, Ca). In its posterior end, the radula originates from a radular gland which is coiled dorsally, where long odontoblast cells secrete the tooth and the radular membrane. Teeth mature gradually. The organic matrix of this complex was stained homogeneously in the first five rows (hematoxylin-eosin). From Row 6 onward, the tooth became demarcated from the radular membrane by forming segments within the matrix of the radular membrane. The cusp's organic matrix milieu was histologically divided into two main domains, internal and external, each one consisting of fibrillar milieu. Teeth are embedded within the tall columnar superior epithelium, which superimposes the cusps. Iron-bearing granules started to appear in these cells beginning at Rows 7 to 10, increasing in number to Row 20 and continuing to at least Row 65. Iron proceeded to infiltrate first into the internal part of the cusp at Row 15. The outer part of the cusp was mineralized beginning at Rows 22 to 27. At about Row 30, the cusp was heavily mineralized by iron. Calcium was deposited into the radular membrane and tooth bases from the most posterior part. It is concluded that radula biomineralization is subject to highly complex but precisely controlled cytological-biochemical processes and that different parts of each young tooth are subjected simultaneously to different biomineralization pathways. This paper focuses on community-wide emergencies caused by war-related events in Lebanon at the beginning of June 1982. Mobilization for the "Peace for Galilee" campaign began on Friday, 4th June. Overnight, families were disrupted, husbands and sons were in danger, and within 24 hours there were notifications of casualities and deaths. Families in crisis became a widespread phenomenon. In Herzlia, as in many other communities, a new service - the Emergency Center - emerged under the auspices of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the Municipality. The authors describe this process of getting organized, the populations served, how the Center was staffed, the role of citizen volunteers, and the types of interventions used to help vulnerable families as well as soldiers home on leave. Stress is placed on the unique type of short-term co-operation achieved between social workers of the local Department of Social Welfare, the staff of the Department of Community Services (especially its Volunteer Bureau), the local liason officer of the Israel Defence Force, the municipal government, and public-spirited volunteers. Mention is made of conditions which made possible the activation of such a service within hours, of the Center's capacity to serve all segments of the population, and of how it was deactivated within a few weeks when the emergency ended. On the basis of lessons learned from this experience, the paper ends with a number of specific recommendations. The authors hope that such innovative forms of crisis-intervention will become part of the helping technology widely available at the community level in future years.  相似文献

Epidemiological procedures can be organised under disaster conditions by means of a simple surveillance system and with few personnel.
In the aftermath of the 4 February 1976 earthquake in Guatemala, an information system was organized by which the requisite information for decision-making was obtained with adequate speed and promptness.
The initial epidemiologic informution was based on reports collected during the early days on symptoms observed at hospitals and health centers and in localities and villages in the stricken area.
At a second, post-emergency stage a more elaborate surveillance system was instituted to provide guidance in the investigntwn of outbreaks, evaluate the health activities and establish basic criteria for preventive and control measures.  相似文献

Deposition velocities have been determined for corn and soybeans in the first 4–6 weeks of growth in a full-scale study of canopy flow in a wind tunnel. Particles of 1, 5, 10 and 15 μm aerodynamic diameter made of sodium florescein were injected into the Environmental Wind Tunnel Facility at Colorado State University. Deposition velocities were determined as a function of free stream velocity (183, 305 and 610 cm/s) and approach flow turbulence intensity (~1% and 8%). Plants were arranged in realistic field configurations. Hot-wire anemometer studies confirmed that the fluid velocity profiles developed in the wind tunnel were similar to the flow realized in canopies in natural fields. An increase in velocity and turbulence intensity was found to decrease the deposition velocities. A minimum deposition velocity was observed at a particle diameter of 5 μm.  相似文献

There is a growing recognition that knowledge of indigenous communities, based on accumulated observations and experience over time, is significant for sustainable environmental management in collaboration with modern scientific knowledge. A number of innovative policy initiatives are currently being implemented in New Zealand to enable indigenous Maori tribes and sub-tribes to rehabilitate and manage their local fisheries in accordance with customary values and practices. These policies are an important milestone from an historical perspective as they are meant to recognise and empower the role of Maori as Treaty partners. The fisheries management regime in New Zealand now provides for Maori representation at the local level within a co-management framework that enables local Maori communities to exercise their customary rights. These institutional arrangements have been crafted to facilitate Maori input, based on customary values and practices, to complement modern Western management practices for sustainable harvesting of marine resources. Nevertheless, the degree to which these initiatives constitute an adequate response to Maori Treaty aspirations is debatable. A major constraint in this respect is that the government is compelled to recognise the needs of other, economically and politically more dominant, non-Maori user-groups in allocating and managing access to fishery resources and the marine environment.  相似文献

As in geneticengineering of animals, issues about cloning fall into threecategories – suggestions that the technology is inherently wrong,risk emerging from the technology and harm to the creatureengendered.
