Summary Evidence suggests that males incur costs in producing ejaculates. Therefore some discrimination should be expected with respect to their pattern of allocating ejaculates. In a laboratory study, males of the European swallowtail butterfly Papilio machaon were mated with conspecific virgin females up to six times. The weight of the spermatophore and of the accessory substances delivered by males, the duration of mating, and the number of sperm in ejaculates were measured. The weight of the first spermatophore was related to male weight but that of accessory substances was not. The weight of the spermatophore delivered by males upon remating was always less than that of the first spermatophore. Second spermatophores Produced by males were smallest when delivered on the day after the first mating and increased asymptotically to about half the initial size with time elapsed since the first mating. Copula duration was highest for males remating on the day after the first mating but decreased to the duration of the first mating for males that were remated on the third day after the first mating or later. The weight of accessory substances delivered by males and the number of sperm in ejaculates were also higher in first matings compared to all subsequent matings. Both of two males that were handpaired on three consecutive days after the first mating produced a cumulative ejaculate mass equalling that transferred at the first mating. Thus the fact that males delivered smaller ejaculates upon remating on the third day after the first mating or later requires explanation, especially in view of the fact that copulations were not prolonged. We argue that the male ejaculate delivery strategy in mildly polyandrous species should be to mate for the first time with virgin females, when a maximum size ejaculate should be delivered, and then to maximize the number of matings. The rationale behind the male shift towards smaller ejaculate sizes delivered at subsequent matings is that: (1) the size of the ejaculate that can be produced is dependent on the time elapsed since the last mating; (2) the abundance of virgin females decreases as the flight season proceeds; and (3) there is an inverse relationship between the size and number of ejaculates that a male can produce in his life-time.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Routine air quality monitoring produces filter samples that, when analyzed, yield the total amount of the aerosol present in the volume of air drawn by the pump in the monitoring device during the given sampling period. From this we obtain an average concentration of the aerosol for the given duration. The samples are therefore really aggregate samples. A natural question then is “what is the effect of the duration of aggregation on the accuracy and precision of the estimate of the quantity of interest?” The answer depends on a number of factors, such as the quantity that is being estimated: a mean, or an extreme value, or some other quantity; the nature of the measurement error—additive versus multiplicative; the costs of laboratory analyses, and so on. In this paper, we investigate these issues when the interest is in estimating the mean concentration of a specified aerosol species over a fixed time period. In particular, we propose a method for determining a sampling duration that will yield the “best estimate” of the mean concentration for a given cost whenever appropriate statistical assumptions hold.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Aerosol size distributions were measured during the summertime 1995 Southeastern Aerosol and Visibility Study (SEAVS) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park using an Active Scattering Aerosol Spectrometer (ASASP-X) optical particle counter. We present an overview of the experimental method, our data inversion technique, timelines of the size distribution parameters, and calculations of dry accumulation mode aerosol density and refractive index. Aerosol size distributions were recorded during daylight hours for aerosol in the size range 0.1 < Dp < 2.5 u,m. The particle refractive index used for the data inversion was calculated with the partial molar refractive index approach using 12-hr measured aerosol chemical composition. Aerosol accumulation mode volume concentrations ranging from 1 to 26 u,m3 cm-3 were observed, with an average of 7 ± 5 u,m3 cm-3. The study average dry accumulation mode geometric volume median diameter was 0.27 ± 0.03 u,m, and the mean geometric standard deviation was 1.45 ± 0.06. Using an internally mixed aerosol model, and assuming chemical homogeneity across the measured particle distribution, an average accumulation mode dry sulfate ion mass scattering efficiency of 3.8 ± 0.6 m2 g-1 was calculated.  相似文献

This paper discusses results of a research project designed to develop an empirical model that could be used as a tool to predict human visual sensitivity to plumes. The resultant probability of detection algorithm (PROBDET) allows one to estimate the probability of a plume of known size, shape and contrast being detected visually. As a basis for the algorithm, a series of laboratory experiments using a high threshold signal detection procedure and computer generated images of plumes with Gaussian luminance distributions was conducted to measure human visual sensitivity to plumes. Results of the laboratory experiments are compared with results of contrast sensitivity experiments that examined visual sensitivity to stimuli with square and sine wave luminance distributions. An example of the PROBDET algorithm is presented to demonstrate its potential

usefulness for assessing how probability of detection estimates change as plume size and contrast parameters vary. Since this research was designed to build on existing knowledge, a discussion of that knowledge and how it relates to the research conducted is also presented. The focus of this discussion is on the human visual system (HVS) and on how visual sensitivity is affected by factors such as the luminance of the stimulus and the surround, the luminance distribution of the stimulus, the size of the surround, and the size and spatial frequency characteristics of the stimulus.  相似文献

Plant species distributions are expected to shift and diversity is expected to decline as a result of global climate change, particularly in the Arctic where climate warming is amplified. We have recorded the changes in richness and abundance of vascular plants at Abisko, sub-Arctic Sweden, by re-sampling five studies consisting of seven datasets; one in the mountain birch forest and six at open sites. The oldest study was initiated in 1977–1979 and the latest in 1992. Total species number increased at all sites except for the birch forest site where richness decreased. We found no general pattern in how composition of vascular plants has changed over time. Three species, Calamagrostis lapponica, Carex vaginata and Salix reticulata, showed an overall increase in cover/frequency, while two Equisetum taxa decreased. Instead, we showed that the magnitude and direction of changes in species richness and composition differ among sites.  相似文献

The ongoing program Clean Air for Europe (CAFE) is an initiative from the EU Commission to establish a coordinated effort to reach better air quality in the EU. The focus is on particulate matter as it has been shown to have large impact on human health. CAFE requested that WHO make a review of the latest findings on air pollutants and health to facilitate assessments of the different air pollutants and their health effects. The WHO review project on health aspects of air pollution in Europe confirmed that exposure to particulate matter (PM), despite the lower levels we face today, still poses a significant risk to human health. Using the recommended uniform risk coefficients for health impact assessment of PM, regardless of sources, premature mortality related to long-range transported anthropogenic particles has been estimated to be about 3500 deaths per year for the Swedish population, corresponding to a reduction in life expectancy of up to about seven months. The influence of local sources is more difficult to estimate due to large uncertainties when linking available risk coefficients to exposure data, but the estimates indicate about 1800 deaths brought forward each year with a life expectancy reduction of about 2-3 months. However, some sectors of the population are exposed to quite high locally induced concentrations and are likely to suffer excessive reductions in life expectancy. Since the literature increasingly supports assumptions that combustion related particles are associated with higher relative risks, further studies may shift the focus for abatement strategies. CAFE sets out to establish a general cost effective abatement strategy for atmospheric particles. Our results, based on studies of background exposure, show that long-range transported sulfate rich particles dominate the health effects of PM in Sweden. The same results would be found for the whole of Scandinavia and many countries influenced by transboundary air pollution. However, several health studies, including epidemiological studies with a finer spatial resolution, indicate that engine exhaust particles are more damaging to health than other particles. These contradictory findings must be understood and source specific risk estimates have to be established by expert bodies, otherwise it will not be possible to find the most cost effective abatement strategy for Europe. We are not happy with today's situation where every strategy to reduce PM concentrations is estimated to have the same impact per unit change in the mass concentration. Obviously there is a striking need to introduce more specific exposure variables and a higher geographical resolution in epidemiology as well as in health impact assessments.  相似文献

The recently completed Big Bend Regional Aerosol and Visibility Observational (BRAVO) Study focused on particulate sulfate source attribution for a 4-month period from July through October 1999. A companion paper in this issue by Schichtel et al. describes the methods evaluation and results reconciliation of the BRAVO Study sulfate attribution approaches. This paper summarizes the BRAVO Study extinction budget assessment and interprets the attribution results in the context of annual and multiyear causes of haze by drawing on long-term aerosol monitoring data and regional transport climatology, as well as results from other investigations. Particulate sulfates, organic carbon, and coarse mass are responsible for most of the haze at Big Bend National Park, whereas fine particles composed of light-absorbing carbon, fine soils, and nitrates are relatively minor contributors. Spring and late summer through fall are the two periods of high-haze levels at Big Bend. Particulate sulfate and carbonaceous compounds contribute in a similar magnitude to the spring haze period, whereas sulfates are the primary cause of haze during the late summer and fall period. Atmospheric transport patterns to Big Bend vary throughout the year, resulting in a seasonal cycle of different upwind source regions contributing to its haze levels. Important sources and source regions for haze at Big Bend include biomass smoke from Mexico and Central America in the spring and African dust during the summer. Sources of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions in Mexico, Texas, and in the Eastern United States all contribute to Big Bend haze in varying amounts over different times of the year, with a higher contribution from Mexican sources in the spring and early summer, and a higher contribution from U.S. sources during late summer and fall. Some multiple-day haze episodes result from the influence of several source regions, whereas others are primarily because of emissions from a single source region.  相似文献

Abstract

Existing quantitative standards/guidelines for fungi in indoor air issued by governmental agencies are based primarily on baseline data (rather than health effects data), and are either absolute (numerical) or relative (indoor/outdoor comparisons) or a combination of the two. The Russian Federation is the only governmental agency that has binding quantitative regulations for bioaerosols. Recommended guidelines have been proposed or sponsored by North American and European governmental agencies and private professional organizations. A considerable number of frequently cited guidelines have been proposed by individuals based either on baseline data or on personal experience. Quantitative standards/guidelines range from less than 100 CFU/ m3 to greater than 1000 CFU/m3 (total fungi) as the upper limit for non-contaminated indoor environments.

Major issues with existing quantitative standards and guidelines are the lack of connection to human dose/response data, reliance on short term grab samples analyzed only by culture, and the absence of standardized protocols for data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Urgent research needs include the study of human responses to specific fungal agents, development and widespread use of standard protocols using currently available sampling methodologies, and the development of long term, time-discriminating personal samplers that are inexpensive, easy to use, and amenable to straightforward, relevant analysis.  相似文献
