Morphological and behavioural traits can serve as anti-predator defence either by reducing detection or recognition risks, or by thwarting initiated attacks. The latter defence is secondary and often involves a ‘startle display’ comprising a sudden release of signals targeting more than one sensory modality. A suggested candidate for employing a multimodal defence is the peacock butterfly, Inachis io, which, by wing-flicking suddenly, produces sonic and ultrasonic sounds and displays four large eyespots when attacked. The eyespots make small birds retreat, but whether the sounds produced thwart predator attacks is largely unknown. Peacocks hibernate as adults in dark wintering sites and employ their secondary defence upon encounter with small rodent predators during this period. In this study, we staged predator–prey encounters in complete darkness in the laboratory between wild mice, Apodemus flavicollis and Apodemus sylvaticus, and peacocks which had their sound production intact or disabled. Results show that mice were more likely to flee from sound-producing butterflies than from butterflies which had their sound production disabled. Our study presents experimental evidence that the peacock butterfly truly employs a multimodal defence with different traits targeting different predator groups; the eyespots target birds and the sound production targets small rodent predators.  相似文献

Knowledge of how species interactions are influenced by climate warming is paramount to understand current biodiversity changes. We review phenological changes of Swedish butterflies during the latest decades and explore potential climate effects on butterfly–host plant interactions using the Orange tip butterfly Anthocharis cardamines and its host plants as a model system. This butterfly has advanced its appearance dates substantially, and its mean flight date shows a positive correlation with latitude. We show that there is a large latitudinal variation in host use and that butterfly populations select plant individuals based on their flowering phenology. We conclude that A. cardamines is a phenological specialist but a host species generalist. This implies that thermal plasticity for spring development influences host utilization of the butterfly through effects on the phenological matching with its host plants. However, the host utilization strategy of A. cardamines appears to render it resilient to relatively large variation in climate.  相似文献

During the Rocky Mountain Airborne Nitrogen and Sulfur (RoMANS) study, conducted during the spring and summer of 2006, a suite of instruments located near the eastern boundary of Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) measured aerosol physical, chemical and optical properties. Three instruments, a differential mobility particle sizer (DMPS), an optical particle counter (OPC), and an aerodynamic particle sizer (APS), measured aerosol size distributions. Aerosols were sampled by an Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) sampler and a URG denuder/filter-pack system for compositional analysis. An Optec integrating nephelometer measured aerosol light scattering. The spring time period had lower aerosol concentrations, with an average volume concentration of 2.2 ± 2.6 μm3 cm?3 compared to 6.5 ± 3.9 μm3 cm?3 in the summer. During the spring, soil was the single largest constituent of PM2.5 mass, accounting for 32%. During the summer, organic carbon accounted for 60% of the PM2.5 mass. Sulfates and nitrates had higher fractional contributions in the spring than the summer. Variability in aerosol number and volume concentrations and in composition was greater in the spring than in the summer, reflecting differing meteorological conditions. Aerosol scattering coefficients (bsp) measured by the nephelometer compared well with those calculated from Mie theory using size distributions, composition data and modeled RH dependent water contents.  相似文献

The process of moult in birds requires the investment of substantial amounts of energy and nutrients in feather production and attendant processes. Flight performance may be reduced during the moult of the wing feathers, and moulting birds may suffer from an increased predation risk. These factors may explain why the moult is usually separated in time from other energetically demanding processes, such as reproduction. In this study, we investigated the importance of the temporal separation of moult from breeding activities in the pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca. We induced a moult-breeding overlap by removing the two innermost primaries on both wings, thus imitating the natural loss of these feathers during the initial stage of the moult. The experiment probably did not stimulate feather regrowth, but may have reduced flight performance. Just before fledging of the young, manipulated males and females, as well as the fledglings, had a lower body condition than control birds. The return rate of adult males in the year following the manipulation was significantly lower for males in the manipulated group than for control males. The return rate of females was lower than that of males, but there was no difference between the two female groups. The number of nestlings recruited in the year after the manipulation was significantly lower for the group with an induced moult-breeding overlap than for the control group. The reproductive performance in recruited and returning old females was independent of the manipulation, and in returning adults and recruits the feather quality in terms of number of barbs/mm was independent of the manipulation. These results suggest that a moult-breeding overlap induces fitness costs in terms of reduced recruitment rate and adult survival in a long-distance migrant. In Lepidoptera, female mating systems range from strict monandry to strong polyandry. Males transfer an ejaculate during copulation that contains both sperm and accessory gland substances. In butterflies the male ejaculate has at least three effects: it (1) contains sperm that can fertilize the eggs of the male’s mating partner, (2) influences the refractory period of the mated female, and (3) contains nutrients that can be used by the female to increase her reproductive output. A number of recent studies have shown that males in polyandrous mating systems are endowed with adaptations to increase mating capabilities. Relative to males in more monandrous species they transfer larger first ejaculates which contain relatively more protein, and allocate proportionally more resources to reproduction. The objective of this study was to compare male reproductive investment in successive ejaculates, in terms of both mass and quality, to determine if males of polyandrous species are capable of maintaining the production of larger and more nutritious ejaculates than males of more monandrous species. We used three species of pierid butterfly, with mating systems ranging from relative monandry to polyandry. The degree of polyandry had a substantial effect on the reproductive performance of males. The cumulative protein content of ejaculates increased with the degree of polyandry. Only males of the most polyandrous species, Pieris rapae, produced three successive ejaculates of similar mass and protein content. In the relatively monandrous species, Aporia crataegi and P. brassicae, males in subsequent matings never produced another ejaculate as large as that transferred by males mating for the first time, although the protein content (mg) of ejaculates did not differ in second and third ejaculates. Moreover, the ability to remate varied with the degree of polyandry. Given the opportunity to remate, the majority of P. rapae males mated three times, whereas relatively few A. crataegi and P. brassicae males were able to perform three matings. These results suggest that male capacity to produce large, nutritious ejaculates is limited in relatively monandrous species. In this study only males belonging to the most polyandrous species had the ability to recuperate quickly from a mating event and remate. Our results suggest that males in polyandrous systems are better adapted to mating more than once. Received: 3 November 1995/Accepted after revision: 13 July 1996  相似文献

Summary In many insects nutrients transferred by the male to the female at mating are later incorporated into both the eggs and soma of the mated females. Accordingly, it has been suggested that female insects can use these male-derived nutrients both for somatic maintenance and to increase both the number and quality of their offspring. Moreover, much discussion is presently devoted to whether the male nuptial gift represents paternal investment, defined as any increase in given male's total surviving progeny by increasing the reproductive output by a given female, or mating effort which obtains if a male gains by increasing the proportion of eggs he fertilizes from a given female (Parker and Simmons 1989). If the male nuptial gift represents parental investment it should be expected to benefit predominantly the offspring sired by the donor, whereas the physiological fate of the male nuptial gift is somewhat irrelevant under the mating effort explanation. In this paper we test these issues by studying the lifetime fecundity, egg weights and longevity of two groups of females of the polyandrous green-veined white butterfly, Pieris napi, one group of which was allowed to mate only once and the other of which was allowed to mate at liberty, the latter group of females mating on average 2.28 times. Moreover, to test the incorporation rate of male-derived nutrients, we performed a second set of experiments where females were allowed to mate with radioactively labelled males. The results showed that polyandrous females had higher lifetime fecundity compared to monandrous females, laying on average 1.61 as many eggs, and that the difference in cumulative fecundity between the two groups was statistically significant from the 5th day of egg-laying onwards. Polyandrous females also lived longer and maintained egg weight at a high level for longer than monandrous females. Largely concomitant with egg-laying rate, incorporation rate of male-derived nutrients peaked 3–4 days after mating, subsequently tapering off to stabilize at about 40% of the maximum. Given the opportunity, female P. napi remated after 3–5 days, the duration of the refractory period being positively correlated with ejaculate mass. Hence, although the nutrient investment of the first male to mate with a female subsidizes the progeny of later-mating males, the male nuptial gift in P. napi clearly qualifies as both paternal investment and mating effort. Under the IMPROVE visibility monitoring network, federal land managers have monitored visibility and fine particle concentrations at 29 Class I area sites (mostly national parks and wilderness areas) and Washington, DC since 1988. This paper evaluates trends in reconstructed visibility and fine particles for the 10th (best visibility days), 50th (average visibility days), and 90th (worst visibility days) percentiles over the nine-year period from 1988-96. Data from these sites provides an indication of regional trends in air quality and visibility resulting from implementation of various emission reduction strategies.  相似文献

The Southeastern Aerosol and Visibility Study (SEAVS) was undertaken to characterize the size-dependent composition, thermodynamic properties, and optical characteristics of the ambient atmospheric particles in the southeastern United States. The field portion of the study was carried out from July 15 to August 25, 1995. As part of the study a relative humidity controlled inlet was built to raise or lower the relative humidity to predetermined levels before the aerosol was passed into an integrating nephelometer or particle-sizing device. Five other integrating nephelometers were operated in various configurations, two of which were fitted with a 2.5 microns inlet. Fine particle (< 2.5 microns) samplers were operated to measure concentrations of sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium ions, organic and elemental carbon, and fine soil. Mass size distributions were measured with an eight-stage, single orifice cascade impactor. Four different strategies for estimating scattering were used. First, an externally mixed model with constant specific scattering coefficients, sulfate ion mass interpreted as ammonium bisulfate, and ammonium bisulfate growth as a function of relative humidity, is assumed. Second, an externally mixed aerosol model, assuming constant dry specific scattering but with sulfate ammoniation and associated composition-dependent hygroscopicity explicitly accounted for, is used. Third, an externally mixed aerosol model, but with sulfate ammoniation, associated growth as a function of relative humidity, and sulfate size distributions, is applied. Fourth, an internally mixed aerosol model with measured sulfur size distributions and estimated size distributions for other species is used with the growth characteristics of the mixture being estimated using the Zdanovskii-Stokes-Robinson (ZSR) assumptions. Only ionic species were considered to be hygroscopic. The second, third, and fourth approaches yield similar results with reconstructed scattering comparing quite favorably with measured scattering. Accounting for sulfate ammoniation and associated water uptake was the most important detail in achieving closure between measurements and modeled scattering. In general, differences between estimated scattering, assuming internally or externally mixed models, was small. These same models were used to estimate wet to dry scattering ratios. The R2 for an ordinary least-squares regression between measured and predicted ratios was high (0.71-0.92), and in most cases the scattering ratio was insensitive to modeling assumptions. However, during some sample periods differences between predicted scattering ratios for the different modeling assumptions were as high as 30%.  相似文献

In order to carry out efficient traffic and air quality management, validated models and PM emission estimates are needed. This paper compares current available emission factor estimates for PM10 and PM2.5 from emission databases and different emission models, and validates these against eight high quality street pollution measurements in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Finland and Austria. The data sets show large variation of the PM concentration and emission factors with season and with location. Consistently at all roads the PM10 and PM2.5 emission factors are lower in the summer month than the rest of the year. For example, PM10 emission factors are in average 5–45% lower during the month 6–10 compared to the annual average. The range of observed total emission factors (including non-exhaust emissions) for the different sites during summer conditions are 80–130 mg km−1 for PM10, 30–60 mg km−1 for PM2.5 and 20–50 mg km−1 for the exhaust emissions. We present two different strategies regarding modelling of PM emissions: (1) For Nordic conditions with strong seasonal variations due to studded tyres and the use of sand/salt as anti-skid treatment a time varying emission model is needed. An empirical model accounting for these Nordic conditions was previously developed in Sweden. (2) For other roads with a less pronounced seasonal variation (e.g. in Denmark, Germany, Austria) methods using a constant emission factor maybe appropriate. Two models are presented here.Further, we apply the different emission models to data sets outside the original countries. For example, we apply the “Swedish” model for two streets without studded tyre usage and the “German” model for Nordic data sets. The “Swedish” empirical model performs best for streets with studded tyre use, but was not able to improve the correlation versus measurements in comparison to using constant emission factors for the Danish side. The “German” method performed well for the streets without clear seasonal variation and reproduces the summer conditions for streets with pronounced seasonal variation. However, the seasonal variation of PM emission factors can be important even for countries not using studded tyres, e.g. in areas with cold weather and snow events using sand and de-icing materials. Here a constant emission factor probably will under-estimate the 90-percentiles and therefore a time varying emission model need to be used or developed for such areas. All emission factor models consistently indicate that a large part (about 50–85% depending on the location) of the total PM10 emissions originates from non-exhaust emissions. This implies that reduction measures for the exhaust part of the vehicle emissions will only have a limited effect on ambient PM10 levels.  相似文献
