The likely introduction of non-indigenous species into the coastal ecosystems of oceanic islands through live-bait utilizations was studied. A store survey identified the species that are traded as live fishing-bait. Only Polychaeta species were identified as imported live-bait on São Miguel Island and all specimens were identified as Perinereis linea. Reponses to surveys of 77 anglers showed that: 44 % harvest from native sources, 44 % buy live-bait and 12 % do both; 56 % of the anglers’ fish on a weekly basis; 31 % dispose of the bait into the sea. A field survey at five sites where fishing rods are routinely utilized was developed to investigate if the non-indigenous polychaetes sold as fishing-bait are already established in the natural environment of the Azores archipelago. Three species of Nereididae were identified: the native Neanthes nubila and P. oliveirae and the cryptogenic P. cultrifera. The escalating utilization of live-bait argues for a change in the habits of fishermen with respect to the discarding of leftover bait, as the higher the volume of discards the higher becomes the probability of non-indigenous species establishment successes, especially on oceanic islands characterized by vulnerable ecosystems with simpler trophic webs. 相似文献

The rapid growth of insects that feed on tree leaves in the spring is believed to be due to high nutritional quality. This study tested the hypothesis that both high nutritional quality and low levels of oxidative stress (i.e., toxicological effects) benefit caterpillars that feed in the spring. Fourth-instar larvae of Lymantria dispar (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) were used to bioassay the leaves of two contrasting host plants in the spring and summer: red oak (Quercus rubra), a high-quality host, and sugar maple (Acer saccharum), a low-quality host. On spring foliage, the combined effects of rapid consumption rate, efficient nutrient assimilation, and high nutritional quality allowed larvae to grow rapidly and attain larger body mass. Ellagitannins, a major source of oxidative stress in the midgut, were at higher concentrations in the spring than in the summer in maple leaves, but were at negligible levels throughout the growing season in oak. Thus, the impact of phenolic defenses (measured as semiquinone free radicals and oxidized glutathione in the midgut) was not decreased in spring-feeding larvae. Instead, oxidative stress in larvae on maple remained at elevated levels in the spring and summer. By contrast, larvae that fed on oak had consistently low levels of oxidative stress. We conclude that oak and maple were better host plants in the spring because of their higher nutritional quality, and not because of a lower effectiveness of their chemical defenses. This work emphasizes the need to measure not only foliar nutritional and phenolic chemistry but also specific physiological responses in the herbivore, such as oxidative stress. These physiological mechanisms add to our understanding of why spring-feeding life-history strategies have evolved in some insect herbivores. 相似文献

The paper reports the findings of a two-year pilot scale experimental trial for the mesophilic (35°C), thermophilic (55°C) and temperature phased (65+55°C) anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge. During the mesophilic and thermophilic runs, the reactor operated at an organic loading rate of 2.2 kgVS/m(3)d and a hydraulic retention time of 20 days. In the temperature phased run, the first reactor operated at an organic loading rate of 15 kgVS/m(3)d and a hydraulic retention time of 2 days while the second reactor operated at an organic loading rate of 2.2 kgVS/m(3)d and a hydraulic retention time of 18 days (20 days for the whole temperature phased system). The performance of the reactor improved with increases in temperature. The COD removal increased from 35% in mesophilic conditions, to 45% in thermophilic conditions, and 55% in the two stage temperature phased system. As a consequence, the specific biogas production increased from 0.33 to 0.45 and to 0.49 m(3)/kgVS(fed) at 35, 55, and 65+55°C, respectively. The extreme thermophilic reactor working at 65°C showed a high hydrolytic capability and a specific yield of 0.33 g COD (soluble) per gVS(fed). The effluent of the extreme thermophilic reactor showed an average concentration of soluble COD and volatile fatty acids of 20 and 9 g/l, respectively. Acetic and propionic acids were the main compounds found in the acids mixture. Because of the improved digestion efficiency, organic nitrogen and phosphorus were solubilised in the bulk. The Brazilian Amazon is known to be a region with high levels of mercury (Hg) in the environment and studies point to an association between high levels of natural mercury in the mother rock and the vast number of clandestine gold mines. Other studies already report the contamination of fish in this region, as well as high levels of Hg in biological material from environmentally exposed populations. On the other hand, this is one of the least developed regions of the planet and it is necessary to understand the vulnerability factors in these populations that may be intoxicated by this element. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the vulnerability factors in communities from Xingu River—Amazon basin probably exposed to Hg. A cross-selection study in two cities localized in Xingu River was conducted, and the sample contained was 268 individuals. sociodemographic questions, lifestyle, diet habits and health conditions were collated. The majority of the sample was female, between 30 and 59 years old, had less than 3 years of educational level and lived in the local of study more than 240 months. There was regular fish consumption (95.9%), principally carnivorous species (80.5%). The visual problem has a highest prevalence (43.3%) between the health problems and about the symptoms of Hg intoxication, memory loss (42.9%), weakness (35.1%), fatigue (34.3%), mood changes (28.7%) and difficulties in concentration (27.2%) was most reported. The female sex, age over 60, educational level below 3 years of study, did not had flush toilet, smoke and least one chronic non-communicable disease represent higher probability to had symptoms of Hg intoxication. Lack of access to health services, low education level and income evidence the susceptibility of this community to diseases and injuries. We inferred climate drivers of 20th-century years with regionally synchronous forest fires in the U.S. northern Rockies. We derived annual fire extent from an existing fire atlas that includes 5038 fire polygons recorded from 12,070,086 ha, or 71% of the forested land in Idaho and Montana west of the Continental Divide. The 11 regional-fire years, those exceeding the 90th percentile in annual fire extent from 1900 to 2003 (>102,314 ha or approximately 1% of the fire atlas recording area), were concentrated early and late in the century (six from 1900 to 1934 and five from 1988 to 2003). During both periods, regional-fire years were ones when warm springs were followed by warm, dry summers and also when the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) was positive. Spring snowpack was likely reduced during warm springs and when PDO was positive, resulting in longer fire seasons. Regional-fire years did not vary with El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) or with climate in antecedent years. The long mid-20th century period lacking regional-fire years (1935-1987) had generally cool springs, generally negative PDO, and a lack of extremely dry summers; also, this was a period of active fire suppression. The climate drivers of regionally synchronous fire that we inferred are congruent with those of previous centuries in this region, suggesting a strong influence of spring and summer climate on fire activity throughout the 20th century despite major land-use change and fire suppression efforts. The relatively cool, moist climate during the mid-century gap in regional-fire years likely contributed to the success of fire suppression during that period. In every regional-fire year, fires burned across a range of vegetation types. Given our results and the projections for warmer springs and continued warm, dry summers, forests of the U.S. northern Rockies are likely to experience synchronous, large fires in the future. 相似文献

The red gorgonian Paramuricea clavata is a long-lived, slow-growing sessile invertebrate of ecological and conservation importance in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. We develop a series of size-based matrix models for two Paramuricea clavata populations. These models were used to estimate basic life history traits for this species and to evaluate the viability of the red gorgonian populations we studied. As for many other slow-growing species, sensitivity and elasticity analysis demonstrate that gorgonian population growth is far more sensitive to changes in survival rates than to growth, shrinkage, or reproductive rates. The slow growth and low mortality of red gorgonians results in low damping ratios, indicating slow convergence to stable size structures (at least 50 years). The stable distributions predicted by the model did not differ from the observed ones. However, our simulations point out the fragility of this species, showing both populations in decline and high risk of extinction over moderate time horizons. These declines appear to be related to a recent increase in anthropogenic disturbances. Relative to their life span, the values of recruitment elasticity for Paramuricea clavata are lower than those reported for other marine organisms but are similar to those reported for some long-lived plants. These values and the delayed age of sexual maturity, in combination with the longevity of the species, show a clear fecundity/mortality trade-off. Full demographic studies of sessile marine species are quite scarce but can provide insight into population dynamics and life history patterns for these difficult and under-studied species. While our work shows clear results for the red gorgonian, the variability in some of our estimates suggest that future work should include data collection over longer temporal and spatial scales to better understand the long-term effects of natural and anthropogenic disturbances on red gorgonian populations. 相似文献

Summary. Summary. Oilseed rape, Brassica napus L. (cv Express),
plants were grown under three different sulphur regimes:
sulphur-free (S0), normal sulphur (Sn, normal field concentration)
and a sulphur-rich (S+, 2 × concentration of Sn). We
performed dual choice oviposition assays with the diamondback
moth, Plutella xylostella, using real plants and,
for the first time with this insect, artificial leaves sprayed
with methanolic leaf-surface extracts. The results mirrored
those of a separate study of preferences for whole plants.
Females laid more eggs on surrogate leaves that were
treated with Sn extracts than on S0 plants, while only a
slight, not significant, difference was observed between
extracts of normal and sulphur-rich plants. This shows
that chemical compounds on the leaf surface mediate the
oviposition preference and that the female insect can
perceive the quality of the host-plants in terms of their
fertilisation status.Since leaf volatiles are known to be oviposition stimulants,
we investigated the effects of leaf-surface extracts on
insect olfactory responses using electroantennograms
(EAGs). In agreement with the behavioural data, we found
that extracts of sulphur-treated plants yielded higher EAG
amplitudes than the S0 extracts. Since the leaf content of the
volatiles isothiocyanates is influenced by sulphur nutrition,
we analysed the extracts for these compounds. Above the
detection threshold of our GC-MS system, no isothiocyanates
were found. Thus, other compounds present in the
surface extracts must be perceived by the antenna.However, the HPLC analysis revealed 11 different
glucosinolates. Progoitrin (2-Hydroxy-3-butenyl) and
gluconapoleiferin (2-Hydroxy-4-pentenyl), which belong to
the hydroxy-alkene class of glucosinolates, were the most
abundant compounds. The total glucosinolate content
sharply increased from S0 to Sn plants, whereas it was slightly
lower in n versus S+ plants. Since it is known that glucosinolates
can stimulate oviposition, it seems likely that the
increased content we observed was influencing the insect
