Summary A fundamental prediction of food-based economic models of territoriality is that animals will not defend territories if food is so abundant that defense will not improve access to food. Several studies of nectar-feeding birds support this prediction, with territoriality being rare or absent in years when nectar was particularly abundant. However, these results could potentially be an artefact of changes in bird density with nectar availability, and in at least some cases the correlations between territory defense and nectar availability could be purely coincidental. This paper reports the first experimental test of whether cessation of territory defense in nectar-feeding birds results from a direct response to abundance of nectar. New holland honeyeaters Phylidonyris novaehollandiae and white-cheeked honeyeaters P. nigra show pronounced changes in their levels of territorial aggression over the 7–8 months that they breed. These changes are predictable from economic considerations in that the birds are least aggressive in the months when nectar is extremely abundant. I tested whether the birds were responding to changes in nectar availability by providing sugar-water feeders at neutral locations that were easily accessible to territory holders, but far enough away from territories that intrusion rates were unaffected. I tested for responses at two time scales feeders were put out for 48-h periods in 1987, and were left out continuously from January to October 1988. The only effect was that territory holders visited feeders instead of flowers when floral nectar was scarce. They continued to defend their territories aggressively at those times, showed seasonal changes in aggressiveness similar to birds on a site without feeders, and did not shift their territories toward feeders. I conclude that the observed changes in aggressiveness are not responses to changes in nectar availability, and suggest alternative explanations.  相似文献

This study involved an examination of a polyculture system (corn-bean-tomato) for specific interactions that may be useful in the development of agronomic systems that are less susceptible to pest attack. The data show that the arthropods generally prefer (are found in) one cultivar more than the others, even in polycultural situations. For example Trichogramma sp. are much more active on tomatoes than on corn, while Coccinellidae are much more common on corn than on tomatoes. The data do not, for the most part, demonstrate any significant differences in insect populations, yield or damage that resulted from interplanting the various cultivars. The role of diversity in agricultural systems is also discussed.  相似文献

Despite potential costs of changing roost or densites, many animals frequently move between roosts or dens. Pallid bats (Antrozous pallidus) change diurnal roost sites frequently and also reportedly have a variety of cooperative social behaviors, many of which are associated with the care of developing offspring. Roost switching is likely to increase the costs of maintaining the group stability expected with social cooperation. Pallid bats roosting in rock crevices in central Oregon were studied with radiotelemetry to (1) examine characteristics of day roosts, (2) determine what ecological factors were correlated with low roost fidelity, and (3) examine the temporal stability of roosting groups of pregnant and lactating bats. Pallid bats changed roosts an average of once every 1.4 days throughout the summer. The bats exhibited seasonal shifts in roost use, occupying roosts behind thin slabs of rock in cool weather and roosts in deep rock crevices in warm weather. Roost switching was not correlated with daily variations in weather conditions or with structural characteristics of the diurnal roosts, although switching may have allowed bats to maintain familiarity with several roosts that vary in microclimate. Roost switching was positively correlated with ectoparasite load. High ectoparasite levels were correlated with lower body weights in lactating females (Fig. 3), suggesting that parasites may be costly to the bats. Roost switching may be a strategy to decrease ectoparasite loads by interrupting the reproductive cycles of those parasites that spend at least part of their life cycle on the walls of the roost. Both pregnant and lactating pallid bats frequently changed their diurnal roost location, but lactating bats tended to travel shorter distances between consecutive roosts. Lactating bats were more likely to continue to associate with particular roostmates despite changes in the location of the diurnal roost (Fig. 4) and were less likely to roost alone. Although the stability of groups of lactating bats was not absolute, evidence supported the prediction that such groups are more cohesive than are those of pregnant bats. Between March 23 and April 4, 1981, samples were taken in the eastern tropical Pacific. The day/night vertical distribution of euphausiid species and biomass are described and contrasted in detail on two eastern tropical Pacific stations, the DOME station, in a region of continuous upwelling and the BIOSTAT station, in a nonupwelling area. The effects of various biological parameters, such as temperature, salinity and oxygen concentrations on the distributions of the species are examined. The numbers of euphausiids m-2 on both stations were highest during the day, indicating that avoidance of the sampler was not a problem. During the day the largest concentration of adult euphausiids was between 300 and 350 m whereas the juveniles were concentrated between 170 and 80 m on both stations. Very few individuals were found within the oxygen minimum layer, but low concentrations of some species were found below the oxygen minimum down to 1 000 m. At night the euphausiid concentration migrated upward into the mixed layer (20 to 30 m) at BIOSTAT and to the base of the mixed layer at the DOME. Significant differences in the night depths of the species were found on both stations. The oxygen minimum layer appeared to act as a barrier to the vertical distribution of all species. Only two species were found in water with an oxygen concentration of <0.1 ml O2 l-1. Twentyone species of euphausiids were found on the two stations but the adult population was dominated by only two or three species on both stations. The reproductive state of the species suggested that some species reproduced earlier on the DOME than on BIOSTAT. Analysis of the depth distribution by cluster analysis showed that the most abundant species occupied different depths during the night and day at BIOSTAT but the two most abundant species were concentrated at the same depth at the DOME station although portions of each species population occupied different pelagic zones.  相似文献

The ability of 15 species of Atlantic reef corals to act as suspension feeders was demonstrated by their removal of suspended particles from sea water in culture vessels. Mean clearance rates varied from 16.6 to 145.5 ml water cleared/h/cm2 of live coral tissue. The lowest rates was found in Porites porites which is primarily a tentacle feeder, and the highest in Diploria clivosa which acts as both a tentacle feeder and suspension feeder. Rates of particle clearance in Agaricia agaricites, which is primarily a suspension feeder, were influenced by current velocity and type of food.  相似文献

Two complete collections of the fishes residing on an isolated coral patch reef ( 1500 m2) at Oahu, Hawaii, were made 11 years apart. Of the 112 species of fishes in both collections combined, only 40% were in common, but these made up more than 85% of the wet biomass in each collection. The two assemblages of fishes were similar in trophic structure and standing crop. Many coral reef fish communities are dominated by carnivorous forms. In the present study, planktivorous fishes were the most important trophic group in the community; this was related to abundant zooplankton resources. Following the second collection in 1977, recolonization by fishes was followed for 1 year. Recolonization proceeded rapidly and was primarily by juvenile fishes well beyond larval metamorphosis. Within 6 months of the second collection, the trophic structure had been re-established. The MacArthur-Wilson model of insular colonization described the recolonization process and predicted an equilibrium situation in less than 2 years. The recolonization data suggested that chance factors may explain the colonization process on a small scale, but a relatively deterministic pattern emerged when considering the entire reef. Thus, at the community level the fishes are a persistent and predictable entity.  相似文献

Phytotoxicity data for aquatic plants have served a relatively minor role in regulatory decisions concerning the environmental hazard of most potential contaminants. A variety of phytotoxicity tests have been conducted with freshwater green algae, duckweed, blue-green algae, diatoms and rooted macrophytes (whole plants and seeds). Several test methods have been standardized for microalgae which are used primarily with chemicals, effluents, contaminated sediment elutriates and hazardous waste leachates. Current scientific understanding concerning the phytotoxic effects of these contaminants is based mostly on results for a few green algae. The greatest limitation of these results is their uncertain environmental relevance due to the large interspecific variation in response of standard algal test species and the unrealistic experimental test conditions. Results of the few field validation toxicity tests conducted to resolve this uncertainty have been chemical-specific and unpredictable. Aquatic vascular plants have been used less frequently than algae as test species. Duckweeds have been used more often than rooted submersed species but the uncertain nature of their sensitivities relative to animal and other plant species has limited their use. Regulatory interest in wetland protection, contaminated sediment evaluations and sediment quality criteria development will result in increased use of whole rooted plants and their seeds as test species. Overall, regardless of the test species, if phytotoxicity data are to be more available and effective in the hazard assessment process, additional information concerning species sensitivity, and environmental relevance of the results will be needed.  相似文献

Breakthrough curves of 137Cs and tritiated water injected instantaneously into artificial fractures in Lac du Bonnet granite were analyzed using the analytical solution for a single rock-fracture system and assuming the linear sorption isotherm of the solute. Parameters of nuclide diffusion and sorption in rock matrices, obtained by fitting, varied depending on the flow velocity in the fractures. According to theoretical calculations, different fracture flow velocities lead to different diffusion distances of nuclides in matrices at the same injection volume. As microscopic inhomogeneity is considered to exist in the rock matrix, the average diffusion-sorption characteristics of the matrix within the diffusion distance may have varied with the fracture flow velocity. Surface sorption was marked in fractures that had relatively high matrix sorption-diffusion capacities. The phenomenon was interpreted using the theoretical relationships developed between the surface sorption, matrix sorption and pore diffusion coefficient, and the porosity of matrices.The effect of the nonlinear sorption of solute was examined by numerically solving model equations that incorporate the nonlinear isotherm. This incorporation may contribute to the reduction of deviations between theoretical and experimental BTC's.  相似文献
