The inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)-determined 206Pb/207Pb ratio of 145 samples of rainwater collected at 25 locations around Scotland during December 1997 and January 1998 and at three longterm monitoring stations in the northeast, central belt and southeast of the country from November 1997 to December 1998 averaged 1.144+/-0.017 (1 s). This represents a significant increase from the mean value of 1.120+/-0.016 recorded for the long-term sites in 1989 1991, only partly attributable to a concomitant increase in the 206Pb/207Pb ratio of leaded petrol from 1.075+/-0.013 to 1.088+/-0.007. The rainwater 206Pb/207Pb data for the late 1990s also contrast markedly with the lower 206Pb/207Pb ratios found for pine needle and atmospheric particulate samples from Scotland (e.g. Glasgow: 1.085+/-0.012 in 1985-1986, 1.099+/-0.007 in 1991-1992), England and Western Europe in this study for the period 1982-1992 when emissions of lead to the atmosphere from petrol-engined vehicles in the UK were approximately 2-9 times higher. The observed change in the lead isotopic signature of rainwater predominantly reflects the impact of measures, such as the introduction and growing uptake of unleaded petrol, to reduce car exhaust emissions of lead to the atmosphere in the UK. Based on the rainwater data, source apportionment calculations suggest a general decline in the contribution of leaded petrol to atmospheric lead in Scotland from 53-61% in 1989-1991 to 32-45% in 1997-1998, with a corresponding decline in the urban environment from 84-86% to 48-58%. 相似文献

Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in limb size in female decorated field crickets (Gryllodes sigillatus) was associated with a reduction in the size of the spermatophore and the amount of sperm transferred by males and an increase
in the time taken to transfer a spermatophore following introduction of a female. There was a weaker negative relationship
between limb asymmetry in males and sperm number but no significant relationship between asymmetry in either sex and spermatophylax
size. In line with a previous study, female size did not appear to influence spermatophore production or mating decisions
by males. The results imply that developmental instability affects both gamete production and mating decisions among males,
although the relationships between spermatophore size, sperm number and asymmetry in females are unlikely to be the result
of males perceiving differences in female FA.

This study examines the role of chronological age and age diversity in relation to the effects of organizational influences on the contributions of 458 volunteers in 74 geographically dispersed teams of a large nonprofit organization. The results indicate that the quality of member selection has a greater positive influence on in‐role performance for older rather than younger volunteers that the quality of training for group members has a greater positive influence on in‐role performance for volunteers who are less dissimilar in age from others in the group, and that the positive effects of chronological age on helping behaviors depend on the mean age of the group such that it is stronger for groups with older age means. Depleted uranium (DU) weapons testing programmes have been conducted at two locations within the UK. An investigation was therefore carried out to assess the extent of any environmental contamination arising from these test programmes using both alpha spectrometry and mass spectrometry techniques. Uranium isotopic signatures indicative of DU contamination were observed in soil, plant and earthworm samples collected in the immediate vicinity of test firing points and targets, but contamination was found to be localised to these areas. This paper demonstrates the superiority of the (235)U : (238)U ratio over the (234)U : (238)U ratio for identifying and quantifying DU contamination in environmental samples, and also describes the respective circumstances under which alpha spectrometry or mass spectrometry may be the more appropriate analytical tool. 相似文献

In a study of the relationship between Insurance Institute for Highway Safety frontal offset crash test ratings and real-world fatality rates, there was a clear trend for better-rated vehicles to have lower driver fatality risk, although the correlation was not uniform across all vehicle groups or statistically significant in all cases. For all types of crashes combined, fatality rates per registered vehicle were generally lower for vehicles rated good than for vehicles rated poor, but rates for acceptable and marginal vehicles were not always within this range. A more precise examination of fatality risk was accomplished by comparing driver outcomes in fatal two-vehicle crashes. When a rated vehicle collided with a nonrated vehicle, the fatality risk for the rated vehicle driver was highest for poorly rated vehicles, then progressively smaller for vehicles with marginal, acceptable, or good ratings. For two-vehicle crashes of similar vehicles rated good and poor, the odds of driver fatality was 34 percent lower for the good vehicle than for the poor vehicle, but this estimate was not statistically significant. Finally, in head-on crashes of rated vehicles, the estimated odds of driver fatality was approximately 74 percent lower for the good vehicle than for the poor vehicle, with confidence limits ranging from 28 to 91 percent. 相似文献

Acidification of lakes results in a number of chemical, physical and biological changes. This review initially outlines the major floristic changes that occur in acidifying and limed lakes. The different types of evidence (historical comparisons, inter-lake comparisons and palaeoecological studies) are considered. These studies emphasise the replacement of calcicole species and others such as the isoetids with Juncus bulbosus and Sphagnun spp. in acidifying lakes. The review then discusses the way in which the various alterations in lake conditions affect the physiology of the macrophytes, particularly with changes in the availability of carbon, a change from nitrate to ammonium as a nitrogen source and the effects of an alteration in the Lake light climate. The population biology, community ecology and ecosystem functioning of macrophytes are discussed, especially where competitive processes may seem more important in determining community change than physiological processes. Particular consideration is paid to the types of evidence of floristic change that are useful and the importance of undertaking experimental studies at the correct scale to determine which factors may be causally related to the floristic evidence. 相似文献

Per vehicle crash involvement rates were compared for otherwise identical vehicle models with and without electronic stability control (ESC) systems. ESC was found to affect single-vehicle crashes to a greater extent than multiple-vehicle crashes, and crashes with fatal injuries to a greater extent than less severe crashes. Based on all police-reported crashes in 7 states over 2 years, ESC reduced single-vehicle crash involvement risk by approximately 41 percent (95 percent confidence limits 3348) and single-vehicle injury crash involvement risk by 41 percent (2752). This translates to an estimated 7 percent reduction in overall crash involvement risk (310) and a 9 percent reduction in overall injury crash involvement risk (314). Based on all fatal crashes in the United States over 3 years, ESC was found to have reduced single-vehicle fatal crash involvement risk by 56 percent (3968). Studies were conducted to assess the spatial learning ability in adult males of the short-tailed opossum, Monodelphis domestica using a T-maze, complex maze and elevated radial 8-arm maze. This is the first study of maze learning in opossums. In the T-maze, the performance of these animals improved over an 8-day training period. Eighty percent of the subjects initially trained to turn to the right for food reinforcement reached criterion (80% correct responses) by day 3 and all reached criterion by day 4. Reversal training (subjects then trained to turn to the left) was more difficult and required 8 days for all subjects to reach criterion. In the complex maze, 89% of the animals achieved the criterion level of performance (3 consecutive trials with 5 or fewer errors) on the eighth day of training and all reached criterion by day 10. The relative importance of intramaze vs. extramaze cues in directing choice behavior was investigated in the radial arm maze. A discrimination procedure was used which selectively rewarded subjects for following only one set of cues. Animals in the intramaze group obtained a food pellet from a cup at the end of each arm. In the extramaze group, the food cups were placed on a small platform just beyond the end of each arm. All subjects were initially trained to visit each arm with the maze in a fixed position (controls) and did so within 15 test sessions. Following these initial trials, the maze was rotated to a different position after each choice. For subjects in the intramaze group, the food moved in conjunction with the rotation of the arms thereby increasing the relevance of intramaze cues. In the extramaze group, extramaze cues became more important because the food remained on the platforms in the same position in the room. Animals in the extramaze group performed significantly better than chance whereas the intramaze subjects did not. This indicates that intramaze cues are not as important as extramaze cues for accurate choice behavior in this marsupial. In addition, animals injected with tetraethyllead showed a significant impairment in running speed and T-maze learning ability as compared to saline-injected controls. 相似文献
