A statistical model for longitudinal count data is used to examine the potential adverse health effects of ambient air pollution. Daily respiratory admissions to 164 acute care hospitals in Ontario are obtained for the period 1983 to 1988. Estimates of ozone levels in the vicinity of each hospital are determined from air pollution monitoring stations maintained by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. Generalized estimating equation methods are used to make inferences about the regression and overdispersion parameters. The admission data display little evidence of serial correlation and extra Poisson variation. However, admission rates vary considerably among hospitals. This latter source of variation needs to be taken into account in examining the effects of air pollution on respiratory health status.  相似文献

The recent review by Caughley (1994) on approaches used in conservation biology suggested that there are two: the small population paradigm and the declining population paradigm. We believe that this division is overly simplistic and that it should not be perpetuated. Both the deterministic factors that reduce population size and the stochastic factors that lead to the final extinction of a small population are critical to consider in preventing extinction. Only through an overall and comprehensive effort, which we call inclusive population viability analysis, can extinction processes be understood and mitigated. In this context we discuss Caughley's comments about genetics, demography, and general population viability, with particular attention to cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) and Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus sp. ) .  相似文献

In a storm sewer system, the catch basin is the interface between surface runoff and the sewer. Responding to the need to improve the quality of stormwater from urban areas and transportation facilities, and spurred by Phase I and II Stormwater Rules from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, several companies market catch basin inserts as best management practices for urban water quality management. However, little data have been collected under controlled tests that indicate the pollutant removal efficiency of these inserts when the inflow is near what can be expected to occur in the field. A stormwater simulator was constructed to test inserts under controlled and replicable conditions. The inserts were tested for removal efficiency of total suspended solids (TSS) and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) at an inflow rate of 757 to 814 L/min, with influent pollutant concentrations of 225 mg/L TSS and 30 mg/L TPH. These conditions are similar to stormwater runoff from small commercial sites in the southeastern United States. Results from the tests indicate that at the test flowrate and pollutant concentration, average TSS removal efficiencies ranged from 11 to 42% and, for TPH, the removal efficiency ranged from 10 to 19%.  相似文献

To enumerate microorganisms having colonized biofilters treating volatile organic compounds, it is necessary firstly to evaluate dispersion methods. Crushing, shaking and sonication were then tested for the removal of microflora from biofilters packing materials (peat and activated carbon). Continuous or discontinuous procedures, and addition of glass beads had no effect on the number of microorganisms removed from peat particles. The duration of treatment also had no effect for shaking and crushing, but the number of microorganisms after 60 min of treatment with ultrasound was significantly higher than that obtained after 0.5 min. The comparison between these methods showed that crushing was the most efficient for the removal of microorganisms from both peat and activated carbon. The comparison between three chemical dispersion agents showed that 1% Na-pyrophosphate was less efficient, compared with 200 mM phosphate buffer or 1% Na-hexametaphosphate. To optimize the cultivation of microorganisms, three different agar media were compared. Tryptic soy agar tenfold diluted (TSA 1/10) was the most suitable medium for the culture of microflora from a peat biofilter. For the activated carbon biofilter, there was no significant difference between Luria Bertoni, TSA 1/10, and plate count agar. The optimized extraction and enumeration protocols were used to perform a quantitative characterization of microbial populations in an operating laboratory activated carbon biofilter and in two parallel peat biofilters.  相似文献

The extent of mass loss on Teflon filters caused by ammonium nitrate volatilization can be a substantial fraction of the measured particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 microm (PM2.5) or 10 microm (PM10) mass and depends on where and when it was collected. There is no straightforward method to correct for the mass loss using routine monitoring data. In southern California during the California Acid Deposition Monitoring Program, 30-40% of the gravimetric PM2.5 mass was lost during summer daytime. Lower mass losses occurred at more remote locations. The estimated potential mass loss in the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments network was consistent with the measured loss observed in California. The biased mass measurement implies that use of Federal Reference Method data for fine particles may lead to control strategies that are biased toward sources of fugitive dust, other primary particle emission sources, and stable secondary particles (e.g., sulfates). This analysis clearly supports the need for speciated analysis of samples collected in a manner that preserves volatile species. Finally, although there is loss of volatile nitrate (NO3-) from Teflon filters during sampling, the NO3- remaining after collection is quite stable. We found little loss of NO3- from Teflon filters after 2 hr under vacuum and 1 min of heating by a cyclotron proton beam.  相似文献

Batch experiments were conducted to determine the effect of temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration on the rates of growth and substrate (benzene and toluene) degradation by the toluene degrading strain, Pseudomonas putida F1. Over a range of temperature from 15 to 35 degrees C the maximum specific growth rate followed the Topiwala-Sinclair relationship when either benzene or toluene served as the sole carbon and energy source. Oxygen limited growth followed Monod saturation kinetics with the specific growth rate given as a function of the dissolved oxygen concentration. The oxygen half-saturation coefficient was found to be approximately 1 mg/l regardless of whether benzene or toluene was the substrate. Similar experiments with Burkholderia (Ralstonia) pickettii PKO1 for grown on toluene revealed an oxygen half-saturation coefficient of 0.7 mg/l.  相似文献

The release of contaminants from sediments is an important problem facing environmental managers concerned with issues such as maintenance dredging, habitat restoration and dredge spoil placement. While there are laboratory methods to assess the remobilization of contaminants from resuspended sediments, little is known about how their operating characteristics influence a sediments response to resuspension. In this study, a particle entrainment simulator (PES) for resuspending sediments was evaluated by assessing variability among replicates and over operation time (12 h) for three estuarine sediments. These sediments varied in physical and chemical properties as well as the degree of metal contamination. Results showed that under identical resuspension conditions, there was low variability among sediment replicates. Sediment properties and the degree of metal contamination affected the magnitude and variation in water column parameters and contaminant release. Fine-grained sediments affected water column parameters, which stabilized over several hours of resuspension. While metal concentrations in the aqueous and particulate samples varied throughout operation, variation was highest for Cd and Ni. Compared to other methods used to evaluate the effects of sediment resuspension, the PES has operational advantages such as the ability to monitor water column conditions and resuspend sediment at specified energy levels. Overall, the PES provided reproducible conditions of resuspension effects among sediments varying in composition and contamination, demonstrating its value as a tool to evaluate contaminant mobility.  相似文献

The Coordinating Research Council (CRC) held its 12th workshop in April 2002, with nearly 90 presentations on the most recent on-road vehicle emissions research. This paper summarizes the presentations from researchers who are engaged in improving understanding of the contribution of mobile sources to air quality. Participants in the workshop discussed mobile source emission models and emission inventories, results from gas- and particle-phase emissions studies from spark-ignition and diesel-powered vehicles (with an emphasis in this workshop on particle emissions), effects of fuels on emissions, evaluation of in-use emissions control programs, and efforts to improve our capabilities in performing on-board emissions measurements, as well as topics for future research.  相似文献

The chemical oxidation of trichloroethene dense non-aqueous phase liquid by permanganate was studied in an aqueous system using micro-reaction/extraction vessels in a novel approach. Experiments were conducted at ambient temperature ( approximately 20 degrees C) under static and mixed conditions to evaluate the rate of TCE(DNAPL) dissolution as a function of permanganate concentration. Chemical oxidation by permanganate was shown to increase the rate of TCE(DNAPL) dissolution under static conditions and decrease the rate of dissolution under mixed conditions. The apparent inconsistency in results appears to result from the local deposition of a film at the DNAPL interface composed of manganese oxide solids as discovered through visual observation with the aid of a Goniometer. Data from interfacial deposition experiments suggest that the film formed rapidly and reached maturation within approximately 2 h with little or no growth occurring thereafter. A conceptual model of the reaction and mass transfer processes occurring at the DNAPL interface was proposed based on the experimental results.  相似文献
