Evidence from woodrat middens and tree rings at Dutch John Mountain (DJM) in northeastern Utah reveal spatiotemporal patterns of pinyon pine (Pinus edulis Engelm.) colonization and expansion in the past millennium. The DJM population, a northern outpost of pinyon, was established by long-distance dispersal (approximately 40 km). Growth of this isolate was markedly episodic and tracked multidecadal variability in precipitation. Initial colonization occurred by AD 1246, but expansion was forestalled by catastrophic drought (1250-1288), which we speculate produced extensive mortality of Utah Juniper (Juniperus osteosperma (Torr.) Little), the dominant tree at DJM for the previous approximately 8700 years. Pinyon then quickly replaced juniper across DJM during a few wet decades (1330-1339 and 1368-1377). Such alternating decadal-scale droughts and pluvial events play a key role in structuring plant communities at the landscape to regional level. These decadal-length precipitation anomalies tend to be regionally coherent and can synchronize physical and biological processes across large areas. Vegetation forecast models must incorporate these temporal and geographic aspects of climate variability to accurately predict the effects of future climate change. 相似文献

Microscale analytical methods for the quantitative detection of PCBs and PAHs in small tissue masses 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Microscale methods (MM) were evaluated and compared to traditional methods (TM) for measuring polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in spiked and standard reference fish and mussel tissues. MMs are advantageous because they use small tissue masses (ca. 100 mg), and maintain sensitivity through reducing final extract volume (traditionally 1 ml) by an order of magnitude or more (40 μl—PCBs; 100 μl—PAHs). Procedural losses occurred in the MMs’ combined cleanup/primary evaporation step (19% PAHs; 6% PCBs), and the final extract concentration (14% PAHs; 22% PCBs). The PAH MM performed comparably to the TM. Although most PCBs had recoveries >50%, the PCB MM generally yielded lower recoveries than the TM. Average method detection limits were 0.6 μg/kg (TM) and 1.0 μg/kg (MM) for PCBs and 25.7 μg/kg (TM) and 27.7 μg/kg (MM) for PAHs. MMs described for PCB and PAH tissue samples are potentially viable alternatives to TMs, and could lead to cost savings in bioaccumulation/toxicity tests. 相似文献

An understanding of the environmental effects of the use of wildland fire retardant is needed to provide informed decision-making regarding forest management. We compiled data from all post-fire surface water monitoring programs where the fire retardant constituents ammonia, phosphorus, and cyanide were measured, and data were available in the public domain. For streams near four major wildfires, we evaluated whether these chemicals originated primarily from fire or from retardant use. We compared measured concentrations in streams where chemical wildland fire retardant was applied with concentrations in streams draining areas where retardant was not used. Correlations with calcium provided an additional line of evidence, because calcium concentrations in ash are much higher than in retardant. Ammonia, phosphorus, and total cyanide were found in streams in burned areas where retardant was not used, at concentrations similar to those found in areas where retardant was applied. Concentrations of weak acid dissociable cyanide were generally non-detected or very low, whether or not wildland fire retardant was used in the watershed. These results indicate that the application of wildland fire retardant had minimal effects on proximate surface water quality. Cyanide concentrations in post-fire stormwater runoff were not affected by the presence of ferrocyanide in the retardant formulas and were due to pyrogenic sources. 相似文献

In this study, we quantified the accumulation and toxicity of cadmium and copper in a freshwater green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, under different phosphate conditions. The accumulated Cd and Cu concentrations increased significantly with increasing ambient P concentrations and free metal ion concentrations. The metal:P ratio remained independent of the ambient P concentration. For the three pulse-amplitude-modulated parameters, the median inhibition concentrations were 1.5-1.6x and 2.0x higher, but the medium inhibition cellular quota was 2.2x and 1.2x lower for cells maintained at 0.1 microM P than for cells maintained at 10 microM P for Cd and Cu, respectively. Furthermore, the difference in metal toxicity decreased (for Cd) or disappeared (for Cu) when the toxicity was expressed by the metal:P ratio in the cells, indicating that the stoichiometry of metals and P can be better used to predict the toxicity of metals. The purpose of the study was to quantify the impact of traffic conditions, such as free flow and congestion, on local air quality. The Borman Expressway (I-80/94) in Northwest Indiana is considered a test bed for this research because of the high volume of class 9 truck traffic traveling on it, as well as the existing and continuing installation of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to improve traffic management along the highway stretch. An empirical traffic air quality (TAQ) model was developed to estimate the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emission factors (grams per kilometer) based solely on the measured traffic parameters, namely, average speed, average acceleration, and class 9 truck density. The TAQ model has shown better predictions that matched the measured emission factor values more than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-PART5 model. During congestion (defined as flow-speeds < 50 km/hr [30 mi/hr]), the TAQ model, on average, overpredicted the measured values only by a factor of 1.2, in comparison to a fourfold underprediction using the EPA-PART5 model. On the other hand, during free flow (defined as flow-speeds > 80 km/hr [50 mi/hr]), the TAQ model was conservative in that it overpredicted the measured values by 1.5-fold. 相似文献

Wildlife resource selection studies typically compare used to available resources; selection or avoidance occurs when use
is disproportionately greater or less than availability. Comparing used to available resources is problematic because results
are often greatly influenced by what is considered available to the animal. Moreover, placing relocation points within resource
units is often difficult due to radiotelemetry and mapping errors. Given these problems, we suggest that an animal’s resource
use be summarized at the scale of the home range (i.e., the spatial distribution of all point locations of an animal) rather
than by individual points that are considered used or available. To account for differences in use-intensity throughout an
animal’s home range, we model resource selection using kernel density estimates and polytomous logistic regression. We present
a case study of elk (Cervus elaphus) resource selection in South Dakota to illustrate the procedure. There are several advantages of our proposed approach. First,
resource availability goes undefined by the investigator, which is a difficult and often arbitrary decision. Instead, the
technique compares the intensity of animal use throughout the home range. This technique also avoids problems with classifying
locations rigidly as used or unused. Second, location coordinates do not need to be placed within mapped resource units, which
is problematic given mapping and telemetry error. Finally, resource use is considered at an appropriate scale for management
because most wildlife resource decisions are made at the level of the patch. Despite the advantages of this use-intensity
procedure, future research should address spatial autocorrelation and develop spatial models for ordered categorical variables. 相似文献

Parasites can affect host behavior in subtle but ecologically important ways. In the laboratory, we conducted experiments to determine whether parasitic infection by the intestinal protozoan Crithidia bombi or the tracheal mite Locustacarus buchneri alters the foraging behavior of the bumble bee Bombus impatiens. Using an array of equally rewarding yellow and blue artificial flowers, we measured the foraging rate (flowers visited per minute, flower handling time, and flight time between flowers) and flower constancy (tendency to sequentially visit flowers of the same type) of bees with varying intensities of infection. Bumble bee workers infected with tracheal mites foraged as rapidly as uninfected workers, but were considerably more constant to a single flower type (yellow or blue). In contrast, workers infected with intestinal protozoa showed similar levels of flower constancy, but visited 12% fewer flowers per minute on average than uninfected bees. By altering the foraging behavior of bees, such parasites may influence interactions between plants and pollinators, as well as the reproductive output of bumble bee colonies. Our study is the first to investigate the effects of parasitic protozoa and tracheal mites on the foraging behavior of bumble bees, and provides the first report of Crithidia bombi in commercial bumble bees in North America. 相似文献

Using estimates of land suitable for restoration in woodlands, grasslands, and deserts, as well as estimates of the rate at
which restoration can proceed, we estimate that carbon storage in these biomes can range up to 0.8 billion tons of carbon
per year (Gt C/yr), for a combination of land management strategies. This corresponds to a reduction in atmospheric buildup
of 0.5 Gt C/yr, which represents up to 15% of the average annual atmospheric carbon buildup in the next century, 3.5 Gt C/yr,
assuming the IPCC 92d scenario. A global strategy for reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration will require the implementation
of multiple options. The advantage of carbon storage in restored drylands is that it comes as a side benefit to programs that
