We examined whether background radiation, or radiation at a slightly higher level, plays a role in the reproduction of a terrestrial earthworm. Enchytraeus japonensis a recently described terrestrial oligochaete, reproduces asexually by fragmentation and subsequent regeneration. Following radiation exposure in which the worms were subjected to a 32P beta-emitter source at 15 times the background dose rate (4.5 microGy/h), a statistically significant decrease in the number of fragmentations was observed as compared with the sham controls. At that time, in a stained preparation with haematoxylin and eosin (HE), sexual reproduction occurred instead of asexual fragmentation, and mature oocytes were observed in the body of grown worms. However, increasing the radiation dose rate by 30 microGy/h resulted in the complete disappearance of the radiation-induced effects, i.e., fragmentation again occurred after 14 h. The results of this study indicate that a lower dose of radiation may be essential to achieve sexual reproduction, inducing an inhibition of fragmentation (asexual reproduction), but at higher, more cytotoxic doses of radiation these effects are negated.  相似文献

Patterns of contamination by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were investigated in fourteen samples of coastal sediments from Hong Kong. Congener-specific analyses revealed nine sediment samples from Junk Bay to contain PCBs at concentrations ranging from 31 to 2200 ng g(-1) dry weight, concentrations generally increasing with distance north in the Bay. By contrast, five sediments from the Tolo area to the north-east of Hong Kong exhibited total PCB levels of only 6.6 to 45 ng g(-) dry weight. The patterns of relative abundance of PCB congeners in the northern Junk Bay sediments suggested the existence of ongoing source(s) of PCBs in this area; biphenyls of lower chlorination were present at high concentration in these samples. Three coplanar PCBs (3', 4, 4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl; 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl; and 3,3',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl) were found to be present in Junk Bay sediments; these are highly toxic and are cause for concern in aquatic environments. The abundance of the three coplanar PCBs in the sediments studied was similar to that in commercial PCB mixtures, suggesting that these congeners are not enriched over other PCBs by the sediments of coastal ecosystems. It is concluded that the preferential enrichment of coplanar PCBs occurs in the biosphere, rather than in sediments.  相似文献

The feasibility of utilizing non edible rice (broken rice) for production of fine materials such as poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) was considered as one of the alternative ways of keeping the environment clean for sustainable development. Thus, production of PHB from broken rice by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) was investigated. During the SSF process, the rice (15% w/v) material was hydrolyzed to glucose, which was utilized by Cupriavidus necator for growth and production of PHB. The PHB content reached 38% at 58 h fermentation. The PHB had weight average molar mass (Mw) and polydipersity index of 3.82 × 105 (g/mol) and 4.15, respectively. Differential calorimetric scan of the PHB showed a melting temperature (Tm) of 176 °C. Given that the PHB was a homopolymer (which consisted of (R)-3-hydroxybutyric acid monomers), it was thought that broken rice could be a raw material for production of both PHB and (R)-3-hydroxybutyric acid. This SSF process would not only help in the utilization of broken rice or non edible rice, but would also serve as a model for utilization of other raw materials that contain starch for production of PHB.  相似文献

Subcritical water hydrolysis was carried out to produce valued materials from squid viscera, the waste product of fish processing industries. The reaction temperatures for hydrolysis of rawand deoiled squid viscera were maintained from 180 to 280 degrees C for5 min. The ratio of material to water forhydrolysis was 1:50. Most of the proteins from deoiled squid viscera were recovered at high temperature. The protein yield in raw squid viscera hydrolyzate decreased with the rise of temperature. The reducing sugar yield was higher at high temperature in subcritical water hydrolysis of both raw and deoiled squid viscera. The highest yield of amino acids in raw and deoiled squid viscera hydrolyzates were 233.25 +/- 3.25 and 533.78 +/- 4.13 mg g(-1) at 180 and 280 degrees C, respectively. Most amino acids attained highest yield at the reaction temperature range of 180-220 degrees C and 260-280 degrees C for raw and deoiled samples, respectively. The recovery of amino acids from deoiled squid viscera was about 1.5 times higher than that of raw squid viscera.  相似文献

A number of experimental studies on submerged canopy flows have focused on fully-developed flow and turbulent characteristics. In many natural rivers, however, aquatic vegetation occurs in patches of finite length. In such vegetated flows, the shear layer is not formed at the upstream edge of the vegetation patch and coherent motions develop downstream. Therefore, more work is neededz to reveal the development process for large-scale coherent structures within vegetation patches. For this work, we considered the effect of a limited length vegetation patch. Turbulence measurements were intensively conducted in open-channel flows with submerged vegetation using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). To examine the transition from boundary-layer flow upstream of the vegetation patch to a mixing-layer-type flow within the patch, velocity profiles were measured at 33 positions in a longitudinal direction. A phenomenological model for the development process in the vegetation flow was developed. The model decomposed the entire flow region into four zones. The four zones are the following: (i) the smooth bed zone, (ii) the diverging flow zone, (iii) the developing zone and (iv) the fully-developed zone. The PIV data also confirmed the efficiency of the mixing-layer analogy and provided insight into the spatial evolution of coherent motions.  相似文献

To estimate the impact of CO2-driven ocean acidification on the early life stages of gastropods, the effects of increased partial pressure of seawater carbon dioxide (pCO2) (800–2,000 μatm) on the early developmental stages and larval shell length of the commercially important gastropod, the horned turban snail, Turbo cornutus were investigated. Increase in experimental seawater pCO2 had an increasingly negative impact on the early developmental rate; the proportion of embryos or larvae displaying retarded development increased at higher pCO2. The proportion of embryos that developed to the 4-cell stage at 2 h after fertilization decreased linearly with increasing pCO2. At ~1,000 μatm pCO2, retarded development was observed in ~50 % of larvae. No embryos developed to the 4-cell stage at 2,000 μatm pCO2 within 2 h of fertilization. A similar trend continued until 24–26 h after fertilization; the proportion of larvae attaining veliger stage by 24–26 h also decreased with increasing pCO2. The shell length of T. cornutus veligers decreased gradually as seawater pCO2 increased, but markedly decreased in seawater under nearly unsaturated and unsaturated conditions (≤1.04) of the aragonite saturation state (Ω aragonite). The results indicate that increased pCO2 seawater has a progressive and acute effect on embryonic and larval T. cornutus, and imply that the extended early developmental period and/or the downsized larval shell produced by ocean acidification will have a negative impact on survival, settlement and recruitment well into the future.  相似文献

Some kinds of amine groups can be introduced to the glassy carbon surface by the electrode oxidation of the carbon electrode surface in ammonium carbamate solution, and this amine groups modified electrode is named as an aminated glassy carbon electrode. The existences of not only primary amine but also secondary and tertially amines were confirmed by X ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The applications of the aminated carbon material for the electrocatalytic reductions of oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and organic compounds such as quinones were carried out, and the effects of amination on the formation of electrocatalytic sites for many species were revealed. The electrocatalyzed cyclic voltammograms of metal ions and metal chelate compounds obtained by aminated glassy carbon electrodes are also discussed. Moreover, we intend to describe that the aminated carbon electrode can exhibit the large reduction waves of inorganic oxoacids such as N02? or bromide ion. The introduced functional groups containing nitrogen atom can change the distribution of the electron densities of the graphite carbon surface, and this specific electron distribution environment may generate the various electrocatalytic activities.  相似文献

The disposal of wood waste treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) is a problem in many countries. We have proposed a novel chelating extraction technique for CCA-treated wood using bioxalate, a solution of oxalic acid containing sufficient sodium hydroxide to adjust the pH to 3.2, which is an effective way to obtain an extraction efficiency of 90% for chromium, copper, and arsenic. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the characteristics of bioxalate extraction of CCA-treated wood. Extractions of CCA-treated western hemlock chips with solutions of bioxalate, oxalic acid, and sodium hydroxide were carried out. The use of bioxalate was confirmed as the most effective extraction technique for chromium, copper and arsenic, with an efficiency of 90%. Extraction with simple oxalic acid was ineffective for copper (less than 40% extraction efficiency), but effective for chromium and arsenic, with 90% efficiency. Sodium hydroxide showed a similar tendency, being ineffective for chromium and copper (less than 20% extraction efficiency), but relatively effective for arsenic (around 70–80% efficiency). We also discovered an interesting phenomenon whereby the addition of sodium hydroxide to a simple oxalic acid solution during the oxalic acid extraction progress resulted in dramatically increased extraction efficiency for copper, chromium and arsenic, up to 90%. Although oxalic acid was ineffective for copper extraction, the addition of sodium hydroxide during the oxalic acid extraction process rendered it effective.  相似文献
