Fugitive emissions are among the major concerns of industrial process releases. The emissions cause problem to various aspects including the environment, health, and economic. Early evaluation of process hazards is beneficial because process can be made inherently benign at lower cost. This paper discusses two important aspects of fugitive emissions assessment during process design – the quantification and the prevention strategies.For the quantification part, three methods are presented for fugitive emissions estimation during the process design. They are tailored to data available in simple process flow diagram (PFD), detailed PFD, and piping & instrumentation diagram (PID). Such methods are needed as early emissions estimation allows production routes and process designs with lower emissions to be selected. The fugitive emissions estimation and methods to abatement are demonstrated on a benzene process case study. Valves are found to be the major emission source with 50% of fugitive emissions of process area in a base case of petrochemical process, in which no fugitive emission reductions are yet made. Pumps without mechanical seals come second with 30% and flanges with 8% of emissions. Inherently safer design keywords can be applied to prevent fugitive emissions in the process plants. Substitution is the most applicable keyword in fugitive emission reduction of existing plants.The emission rate calculations together with estimation of health risk give a sound background for the decision making on elimination of emissions at source through equipment and piping changes. The case study presented reveals that by substituting emission prone components by inherently low-leaking ones, the plant emissions can be reduced over 90% in practice. This is created mainly by replacing rising stem valves with ball valves, installing double mechanical pump seals or hermetic pumps and making changes in sampling and relief systems. Ideally by also changing flanges to welded connections, which is not viable for various reasons, the emissions could be reduced nearly to zero.  相似文献

Marie Jahoda's latent deprivation model was tested with a representative sample of the German population (N = 998). As expected, employees reported high levels of time structure, social contact, collective purpose, and activity not only in comparison to unemployed persons but also in comparison to persons who are out of the labor force (i.e., students, homemakers, retirees). Even unskilled manual workers reported more access to these “latent functions” than persons without employment. For the fifth of Jahoda's dimensions, identity/status, no significant differences between employed persons and persons who are out of the labor force could be identified. However, unemployed persons reported less status than all other groups did. Thus, Jahoda's model was clearly endorsed for four of the five latent functions of employment and partly endorsed for the fifth function. All variables in the model correlated significantly with distress, as expected. Demographic correlates of the manifest and latent functions were also analyzed: Access to the latent functions was best among young men from higher social classes who lived in an intimate relationship in a comparatively large household with children. An optimized parameterization of the non-dimensional longitudinal dispersion coefficients in Greek rivers, $K_{x_a } $ , is described in terms of parameters derived from cross-section river geometry and longitudinal velocity data. Optimization is accomplished, using various combinations of the selected parameters, either for subsets of $K_{x_a } $ values, according to the cross-section aspect ratio range, or for the entire $K_{x_a } $ population. The use of shape factors associated with the river cross-section transverse profiles of depth-mean longitudinal velocities and the normalized intensities of longitudinal velocity variations from the overall mean cross-sectional velocity improves the parameterization. The statistical behavior of $K_{x_a } $ in terms of skewness, flatness and other shape coefficients is also examined. $K_{x_a } $ histograms show that these coefficients have a log-normal distribution. An empirical expression for $K_{x_a } $ is also proposed that takes into account both contributions from the transverse velocity profile and from the vertical profile of longitudinal velocities, at each cross-section, in shaping the value of dispersion coefficients when the aspect ratio of the cross-section is of O(1) and/or when $K_{x_a } $ is of O(1).  相似文献

The university has a role to play in helping revitalise US cities. University participation contributes to all three aspects of life on campus: teaching, research and service. This evaluation uses a case study qualitative approach in order to assess a $2 million university-community partnership programme in Louisville, Kentucky. A selective sample of business, community, university and government leaders was interviewed to evaluate the impact of the University of Louisville Housing and Neighborhood Development Strategies programme. The programme consisted of special classroom and related projects devoted to applied research by faculty and students including, but not limited to, housing development and the recycling of environmental infrastructure (i.e. housing lots, storm and sanitary sewers and water pipes, etc.). The partnership has won environmental awards from the Sierra Club and the US Environmental Protection Agency, and was a semi-finalist in the Innovations in American Government Awards from Harvard University. It also included use of professional staff to deliver a broad spectrum of human resource services to the community with a feedback loop to research themes. There are positive and negative aspects to these partnerships. On balance, both town and gown have the potential to gain immeasurably from the collaborative efforts of university- community partnerships.  相似文献

Sediments may act as both a carrier for and a potential source of contaminants such as toxic organics in aquatic environments. This study investigated the spatial distribution of the pesticide DDT [1,1, 1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane] in sediments from the Cedar and Ortega Rivers located in the lower St. Johns River basin, Florida, USA, using field measurements and three-dimensional kriging analysis. High DDT concentrations were found near the junction of the Cedar and Ortega Rivers and at the north end of the Ortega River in the upper 0.5 m of the sediments, indicating that the sediment was enriched with DDT in the top layer although use of this chlorinated compound was banned in 1972. Further study revealed that the influence of sediment grain size or texture on DDT contamination was negligible in this river system and no linear correlations existed among DDT and its metabolites such as DDD [1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane] and DDE [1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethylene]. Comparison of three-dimensional distribution of DDT content to the Florida sediment quality assessment guideline or probable effect level (PEL) showed several "hot spots" in the Ortega River sediments, where DDT contents exceeded the PEL value of 4.78 microg kg(-1). Such contamination may pose a significant hazard to aquatic life.  相似文献

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and earning management have become important to firm’s operation. Previous researches use of discretionary accruals (DA) as a proxy variable for earnings management can easily result in errors in empirical analysis. Thus, this study uses the CSR index proposed by Chen et al. 2013. Journal of American Business Review, 2, 181–188, discretional accrual and real earning management to examine the association with CSR, earning management, and firm value. The empirical results find that the firm engages CSR not only to increase more information transparency of CSR and creating interaction with stakeholders but also to reduce earning management phenomenon. When firm has lower CSR performance, it has prone to earning management. In addition, CSR performance can enhance firm value, but the firm engage CSR to cover up and shift attention away from earnings manipulation by managers, it would decrease firm value.  相似文献

Consulting firms and contractors can mitigate the environmental effects of construction; however, they may disagree in their interpretations of how to address various environmental topics and the linkage between key topics and related indicators disclosed in corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports. This study investigated the linkage between key topics and performance indicators disclosed by the two types of companies in eight CSR reports. The present study identified and analyzed environmental material topics, indicator disclosures, and their relationships. The key topics (such as those concerning materials and energy) identified by consulting firms were not necessarily those regarded as important by the contractors. A strong correlation existed between the indicator disclosures of the companies. Emissions indicators were most frequently disclosed. The contribution of this study is proposing the importance of aligning topics and indicators. Companies that review this study can align their practices with its findings to improve CSR reporting quality.  相似文献

The Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment provided subsidy over the period 2004–2008 to a number of companies to introduce changes aimed at reducing accidents by changing their safety culture and aspects of their safety management. As part of the programme a scientific evaluation was set up to assess the effectiveness of the interventions in 17 of the projects, covering 29 companies. Before and after studies were made of the companies, documenting the state of their safety management and risk control efforts and their accident rates before the intervention, the changes made over the study period and the resulting changes in a range of measures aimed at assessing the success of the changes. The analysis led to a categorisation of the projects according to their degree of success.This paper describes the patterns of interventions distinguishing between successful and not successful projects and discusses the mechanisms lying behind them. Interventions bringing about constructive dialogue between shop-floor and line management, providing motivation to line managers and strengthening the monitoring and learning loops in the safety management system (SM) appeared more successful. The amount of energy and creativity injected by top managers and, above all, by the coordinator (safety professional) appeared also to be a distinguishing factor.  相似文献
