INTRODUCTION: This study analyzes the in-service performance of roadside hardware on the entire urban State Route system in Washington State by developing multivariate statistical models of injury severity in fixed-object crashes using discrete outcome theory. The objective is to provide deeper insight into significant factors that affect crash severities involving fixed roadside objects, through improved statistical efficiency along with disaggregate and multivariate analysis. METHOD: The developed models are multivariate nested logit models of injury severity and they are estimated with statistical efficiency using the method of full information maximum likelihood. RESULTS: The results show that leading ends of guardrails and bridge rails, along with large wooden poles (e.g. trees and utility poles) increase the probability of fatal injury. The face of guardrails is associated with a reduction in the probability of evident injury, and concrete barriers are shown to be associated with a higher probability of lower severities. Other variables included driver characteristics, which showed expected results, validating the model. For example, driving over the speed limit and driving under the influence of alcohol increase the probability of fatal accidents. Drivers that do not use seatbelts are associated with an increase in the probability of more severe injuries, even when an airbag is activated. IMPACT ON INDUSTRY: The presented models show the contribution of guardrail leading ends toward fatal injuries. It is therefore important to use well-designed leading ends and to upgrade badly performing leading ends on guardrails and bridges. We compared two methods of estimating crop water consumption to assess whether remote sensing techniques provide consumptive use (CU) estimates commensurate with conventional methods. Using available historical satellite and meteorological data, we applied Mapping EvapoTranspiration at high Resolution using Internalized Calibration (METRIC) to 317,455 ha in the South Platte basin, in northeastern Colorado, for the 2001 irrigation season. We then compared these derived CU estimates with values calculated by using the Colorado Water Conservation Board's South Platte Decision Support System StateCU model. Evaluating the data by irrigation ditch service area, we disaggregated the output to allow for comparison by service area size, crop type, irrigation method, water supply source, and water availability. We concluded that METRIC is a suitable alternative to StateCU in the South Platte basin and could help to identify areas with inhibited crop growth or deficit irrigation practices. In addition, METRIC could be used as a complement to StateCU to refine StateCU model parameters, allowing for more accurate estimates of crop water shortages and groundwater recharge associated with irrigation delivery and application. 相似文献

Despite annual increases in the amount of material solid waste (MSW) that is recycled in the United States, the overall amount of MSW generated continues to increase. In an effort to identify and test specific predictors of curbside recycling behavior, the current study adapted the empirically validated Information–Motivation–Behavioral Skills model (IMB), traditionally used to predict personal health behavior, to explain curbside recycling behavior. Using structured computer assisted telephone surveys with two random community samples; structural equation models indicated that the IMB model significantly predicted curbside recycling. Data from the current study provides specific information about critical psychosocial determinants of curbside recycling behavior and public policy implications. 相似文献

The majority of Australian weeds are exotic plant species that were intentionally introduced for a variety of horticultural and agricultural purposes. A border weed risk assessment system (WRA) was implemented in 1997 in order to reduce the high economic costs and massive environmental damage associated with introducing serious weeds. We review the behaviour of this system with regard to eight years of data collected from the assessment of species proposed for importation or held within genetic resource centres in Australia. From a taxonomic perspective, species from the Chenopodiaceae and Poaceae were most likely to be rejected and those from the Arecaceae and Flacourtiaceae were most likely to be accepted. Dendrogram analysis and classification and regression tree (TREE) models were also used to analyse the data. The latter revealed that a small subset of the 35 variables assessed was highly associated with the outcome of the original assessment. The TREE model examining all of the data contained just five variables: unintentional human dispersal, congeneric weed, weed elsewhere, tolerates or benefits from mutilation, cultivation or fire, and reproduction by vegetative propagation. It gave the same outcome as the full WRA model for 71% of species. Weed elsewhere was not the first splitting variable in this model, indicating that the WRA has a capacity for capturing species that have no history of weediness. A reduced TREE model (in which human-mediated variables had been removed) contained four variables: broad climate suitability, reproduction in less or than equal to 1year, self-fertilisation, and tolerates and benefits from mutilation, cultivation or fire. It yielded the same outcome as the full WRA model for 65% of species. The potential of TNT to accumulate in aquatic organisms was assessed by determining bioconcentration factors for TNT and TNT biotransformation products using two benthic invertebrates (Chironomus tentans and Lumbriculus variegatus), and by determining the bioaccumulation factor of TNT and TNT biotransformation products due to TNT exposure via feeding for channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). In all three species, TNT was rapidly biotransformed resulting in minimal accumulation. The bioconcentration factors for parent TNT ranged from 3 to 4 ml g(-1) for the invertebrates studied, while the TNT bioaccumulation factor for catfish via oral exposure of food pellets was 2.4x10(-5) g g(-1) based on the concentration of TNT in the food pellet. As indicated by this small bioaccumulation factor, TNT accumulation in channel catfish through trophic transfer would be negligible compared to aqueous exposure (previously reported BCF of 0.79 ml g(-1)). TNT extractable biotransformation products accumulated to a greater degree than parent TNT for all three species. In addition, a large fraction of the radioactivity within all three species resisted solvent extraction. The highest bioconcentration factors occurred in L. variegatus with extractable radioactivity measuring 76 ml g(-1) and total radioactivity measuring 216 ml g(-1). Because the bioaccumulation of TNT is very low compared to the bioaccumulation of its biotransformation products, further research including identifying and determining the relative toxicities of these biotransformation products is necessary to fully evaluate the environmental risk posed by exposure to TNT. 相似文献

Our goal was to compare the performance of models developed using multiple linear regression (MLR) techniques with models developed using three relatively new techniques: classification and regression trees (CART), random forest (RF), and boosted regression trees (BRT). We used tolerance of taxa based on richness (RICHTOL) and ratio of observed to expected taxa (O/E) as response variables and land use/land cover as explanatory variables. Responses were generally linear; therefore, there was little improvement to the MLR models when compared to models using CART and RF. In general, the four modeling techniques (MLR, CART, RF, and BRT) consistently selected the same primary explanatory variables for each region. However, results from the BRT models showed significant improvement over the MLR models for each region; increases in R2 from 0.09 to 0.20. The O/E metric that was derived from models specifically calibrated for Oregon consistently had lower R2 values than RICHTOL for the two regions tested. Modeled O/E R2 values were between 0.06 and 0.10 lower for each of the four modeling methods applied in the Willamette Valley and were between 0.19 and 0.36 points lower for the Blue Mountains. As a result, BRT models may indeed represent a good alternative to MLR for modeling species distribution relative to environmental variables. 相似文献

The sulphur content and sulphur isotopic composition of Sphagnum as well as anionic compositions and sulphur isotope ratios of rainwater inputs and bog waters have been measured at Thorne Moors, a raised bog in eastern England. Rainwater sulphate isotopic composition shows the sulphur input at this site to be dominated by anthropogenic pollution from fossil fuel burning. Strong depletion of sulphate (low SO4(2-)/Cl-) and enrichment in 34S in sulphate occurs at depth in the bog porewaters due to bacterial sulphate reduction. Some surface waters have low SO4(2-)/Cl-) and are 34S enriched due to removal of sulphate by downward diffusion into a sulphate-reducing zone. Other sites have high SO4(2-)/Cl-) which appears to result from oxidation of organically bound sulphur in the peat. Sulphur is present in Sphagnum at around 0.2% by weight and is depleted by 0 to -9 per thousand in the heavier 34S isotope compared to sulphate. Comparison with similar data from pristine coastal sites shows that sulphur incorporation into Sphagnum is enhanced in the polluted site (as Sphagnum sulphur concentrations are higher at lower total sulphur inputs) and that sulphur incorporation is accompanied by a smaller isotopic shift than in the pristine sites. The data support a model of preferential incorporation of partially reduced sulphur species (probably HSO3-) into Sphagnum. In pristine sites these are only available as oxidation products of sulphide formed by sulphate reduction and are 32S depleted. In polluted sites this source is augmented by sulphur(IV) species in atmospheric inputs and the resultant mixture is less depleted in 32S. Thus, in the polluted sites more HSO3- is available for uptake and the isotopic shift between Sphagnum and aqueous sulphur species is smaller. 相似文献

The study team analyzed 20 public and 12 private incident reports using the TapRoot® methodology to identify root causes. These root causes were mapped to operations practice failures. This paper describes the top ten operations failure modes identified in the analysis. In situ treatability studies are being conducted to evaluate various in situ technologies to manage groundwater contamination at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The focus of these studies is to evaluate remediation options for contaminated (mostly aerobic) groundwater occurring within the basal portion of a clayey residuum called the rubble zone. The tension‐saturated media and unsaturated media lying above the rubble zone are also being treated where they make up a significant component of the contaminant mass. An in situ chemical reduction field pilot test was implemented (following bench‐scale tests) during July and August 2000. The test involved the injection of zero‐valent iron powder in slurry form, using the FeroxSM process patented by ARS Technologies, Inc. The pilot test focused on trichloroethene (TCE)‐contaminated groundwater within the rubble zone. Maximum pre‐injection concentrations of about 72,800 micrograms per liter (μg/l) were observed and no secondary sources are believed to exist beneath the area. The potential presence of unexploded ordnance forced an implementation strategy where source area injections were completed, as feasible, followed by overlapping injections in a down gradient alignment to create a permeable reactive zone for groundwater migration. Eight post‐injection rounds of groundwater performance monitoring were completed. The results are encouraging, in terms of predicted responses and decreasing trends in contaminant levels. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献
