Innovative cities are essential for the economic growth and development of countries. At the same time, however, social and environmental problems related to city growth can be serious threats to the full realisation of the socio-economic contribution that cities can make. City environments thus often provide both new problems and the creative and diverse environments, which make it possible to solve them. The question of whether or not sustainable development is possible largely will be answered in cities. This is also the case for problems related to waste management. Landfills may be located in the countryside, but if a country is to reduce environmental costs, the results will rest on the innovation power of cities. In this paper it is argued that the notion of a 'system of innovation' is helpful in understanding the factors that shape the processes of innovation and that determine the extent to which environmental problems may be solved. In this context, institutional innovation and political innovation as compared to technical innovation are of special importance.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Information reported here is the result of a detailed analysis of data on flared and vented solution gas in the Province of Alberta in 1999. A goal of characterizing these flares was to aid in the improved management of solution gas flaring. In total, 4499 oil and bitumen batteries reported flaring or venting with a combined gas volume of 1.42 billion m3. There was significant site-to-site variation in volumes of gas flared or vented, gas composition, and flare design.

Approximately 5% of physical batteries generate 35.7% of the gas flared and vented from oil and bitumen batteries. Therefore, if one were to attempt to mitigate flaring, significant progress could be made by starting with only the largest sites. The monthly variability of gas volumes was considered because high variability could affect implementation of alternative technologies. It was found that slightly more than 40% of the sites were reasonably steady and had monthly deviations of 100% or less from the average flared volume. The variability in monthly volumes was less for the larger batteries. Data from individual well sites show significant variability in the relative concentrations of each of the major species contained in solution gas.  相似文献

Abstract

The mechanism of delayed neurotoxicity of some OP (organophosphorus) esters such as DFP (di‐isopropyl phosphorofluoridate) and TOCP (tri‐o‐cresyl phosphate) involves an initial two‐step process affecting an esterase called NTE (neurotoxic esterase). This understanding permits the assessment of delayed neuropathic potential in terms of a quantitative measurement of inhibition of NTE in tissue taken from dosed hens. Structure/activity relationships have been rationalized and the neurotoxic potential of those OP esters which are direct inhibitors of esterases may now be assessed in vitro. The response of human NTE can usefully be compared with that of hen NTE. Nil delayed neurotoxic potential is associated with carbamate or phosphinate anticholinesterases which may be designed as insecticides.  相似文献
