Economics: Theory versus Practice in Wildlife Management   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
One of the most controversial issues in wildlife management in North America is the trend towards the commercialization of wildlife. The sale of hunting privileges and game ranching are forms of wildlife commercialization that have not been unanimously accepted, and widely opposing views exist on the merits and drawbacks of the use of economic incentives for the management of wild animals. In this essay the use of economics is explored from a theoretical "free market" perspective and from a more practical point of view. The issue of market failure is addressed and potential solutions are offered, such as tax incentives and government farm programs. Also the question of when market-oriented solutions are applicable to wildlife is discussed. We conclude that polarization of the issue is counterproductive and that some of the more innovative solutions to current wildlife management problems can be found between the opposite extremes of public ownership and the profit-motivated incentives offered by the market.  相似文献

The results of a survey of air particulates at 23 sites across Jamaica for total suspended particulates (TSP), Al, Br, Cl, Na, Pb, and V, by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) are reported. The geometric mean of TSP values, 35 g m-3, is well within the World Health Organisation's standard of 60 g m-3 for TSP, but in areas of high vehicular traffic density the TSP values exceeded this limit. The correlation coefficient between Br and Pb concentrations in the particulates was 0.92 and the Br/Pb ratio of 0.38 compares well with a ratio of 0.39 found in commercial petrol indicating that the exhaust from vehicular traffic is the major source of Pb in atmospheric particulate matter in Jamaica.  相似文献

The combined impact of multiple plant parasites on plant performance can either be additive (the total damage equals the sum of the individual effects) or nonadditive (synergistic or antagonistic damage). Two statistical models are available for testing the independent (=additive) effects of two factors. Here we suggest that the natural history of the plant-parasite system should motivate the choice of a statistical model to test for additivity. Using in-field, manipulative experiments, we examined the interactions between the herbivorous mite Calacarus flagelliseta Fletchmann, De Moraes and Barbosa (Acari: Eriophyidae), the fungal pathogen Oidium caricae F. Noack (a powdery mildew), and their host plant Carica papaya L. in Hawaii. First, we found that herbivorous mites had a moderate negative effect on powdery mildew: when mites were absent, powdery mildew colonies were larger and more numerous. Second, we showed that each plant parasite, when evaluated alone, significantly reduced several measures of plant performance. Third, we found that the combined impact of mites and mildew on plant performance is mostly additive and, for a few variables, less than additive. Finally, we explored compensatory responses and found no evidence for nonlinearities in the relationship between plant performance and cumulative parasite impact. Plants are almost universally subject to attack by multiple herbivores and pathogens; thus a deeper understanding of how multiple plant parasites shape each other's population dynamics and plant performance is essential to understanding plant-parasite interactions.  相似文献

Mature female stages of Tanais cavolinii Milne Edwards are described according to degree of oostegite development. Sexual dimorphism of the chelipeds of copulatory males is explained functionally. An aberrant marsupium consisting of two closed ovisacs with a small slit for sperm transfer protects the brood from sudden unpredictable changes in salinity. Behavioural traits, courtship, copulation, and parental care are described and compared to those of Heterotanais oerstedi Kröyer. The different habitats selected by the two species are reflected by several adaptations in their morphology and behaviour as tube dwellers. A phenomenon unique among invertebrates is that the female T. cavolinii supplies additional yolk to the larvae just before their release. The production and timing of this food supply is described and its adaptive significance is discussed.  相似文献

Inorganic arsenic and its methylated metabolites were determined in urine from adults and children in Cornwall and from corresponding control groups in Glasgow. In the mineralised south-west of England, where it has been suggested that the highly enriched soil arsenic concentrations may at least be a cofactor in the increased incidence of skin cancer, urinary arsenic levels were, in general, only slightly elevated. The potential for increased intake of inorganic arsenic in Cornwall was, however, reflected in the more frequent occurrence of trivalent inorganic arsenic and monomethylarsonic acid in urine and, of especial significance, in two comparatively highly elevated sum of arsenic species concentrations of 48.7 and 20.8 g g–1 creatinine recorded for two pre-school children. These findings are discussed with reference to recommended limits and pathways of exposure to inorganic arsenic.  相似文献

Samples of Siphonaria sp. were collected between 1978 and 1982 from sites covering its known geographic range, from Kalbarri, Western Australia to Port Robe, South Australia. Geographic variation of 7 polymorphic enzymes was examined in this intertidal pulmonate limpet, and was found to be consistently small, indicating a large-scale influence of gene flow due to planktonic dispersal. Despite this large-scale uniformity, there is fine-scale genetic patchiness, which is repeated, rather than accumulated, on the larger scale. Throughout its geographic range, Siphonaria sp. shows deficits of heterozygotes for all 7 loci. The consistency among loci indicates that the causes of the deficits are populational, rather than locus-specific. A Wahlund effect, the departure from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium due to mixing of individuals from groups with different allelic frequencies, is the simplest explanation of such deficits. The limited geographic variation of allelic frequencies, however, is grossly inadequate to produce these deficits through a Wahlund effect. Similarly, temporal variation in allelic frequencies in recruits does not explain the deficits. The largest contributor to a Wahlund effect appears to be binomial sampling variance among small local breeding groups. Thus, mixing of larvae on a scale of metres, rather than among geographical areas, apparently produces the deficits of heterozygotes.  相似文献

Dissolved total carbohydrate (TCHO), polysaccharide (PCHO), monosaccharide (MCHO) and organic carbon (DOC) were determined at 3-h intervals over 5 diel cycles in the mixed layer of the northwestern Caribbean Sea while following a drogued buoy. These data have been compared to populations of phototrophic (PNAN) and heterotrophic (HNAN) nanoplankton (2–20 m diameter) and heterotrophic bacteria (HBAC) (0.2–2.0 m diameter) estimated by epifluorescence counts, as well as to CO2, phosphate, chlorophyll a and phaeopigment data determined simultaneously. Two different types of apparent diel dissolved carbohydrate (CHO) patterns were found. On 3 d when no sustained net CO2 uptake was evident, TCHO and PCHO generally declined during the afternoon and early evening while MCHO tended to increase. On two other days when apparent sustained CO2 uptake occurred during the day, there were large evening TCHO and PCHO peaks with constant or declining MCHO levels. These accumulations probably resulted from the release of recently produced PCHO from phototrophs. As was found earlier in the Sargasso Sea, PNAN populations were inversely related to PCHO concentrations. The sample to sample fluctuations of PNAN also were inversely related to the apparent rates of change of TCHO and PCHO, possibly due to an inverse relation between the rates of PNAN cell division and CHO excretion. Fluctuations in HBAC populations were inversely correlated with PCHO dynamics and directly related to MCHO variations, possibly due to extracellular hydrolysis of PCHO to MCHO during periods of rapid bacterial growth as well as to net heterotrophic PCHO uptake. A direct relationship between HNAN and TCHO fluctuations suggests the importance of HNAN excretion in the release of dissolved organics. The combined PNAN and HBAC fluctuations accounted for a more significant fraction of the variance in the apparent rates of change of PCHO than did any single population parameter indicating that intimate interactions between the microbial plankton groups are important in the in-situ regulation of CHO dynamics. Total system net TCHO release and uptake rates for 5 d averaged 56 and 53 g C l-1 d-1 respectively, assuming that the observed fluctuations resulted from temporal planktonic processes in homogeneous water masses. While the data contain indications that this was the case, this assumption is not definitive.  相似文献
