Radon-222 activity concentration has been monitored since 1999 in an underground limestone quarry located in Vincennes, near Paris, France. It is homogeneous in summer, with an average value of 1700 Bq m(-3), and varies from 730 to 1450 Bq m(-3) in winter, indicating natural ventilation with a rate ranging from 0.5 to 2.4 x 10(-6) s(-1) (0.04-0.22 day(-1)). This hypothesis is supported by measurements in the vertical access pit where, in winter, a turbulent air current produces a stable radon profile, smoothly decreasing from 700 Bq m(-3) at 20 m depth to 300 Bq m(-3) at surface. In summer, a thermal stratification is maintained in the pit, but the radon-222 concentration jumps repeatedly between 100 and 2000 Bq m(-3). These jumps are due to atmospheric pressure pumping, which induces ventilation in the quarry at a rate of about 0.1 x 10(-6) s(-1) (0.009 day(-1)). Radon-222 monitoring thus provides a dynamical characterisation of ventilation regimes, which is important for the assessment of the long-term evolution of underground systems.  相似文献

This paper discusses the current approaches to environmental protection from ionising radiation from an ecological perspective, highlighting the need to understand fully what we are trying to protect. Ecologically relevant endpoints for environmental protection are discussed along with the need to integrate protection from ionising radiation with the approaches adopted for non-radioactive contaminants. High-resolution gamma spectrometry was used to determine the concentration of 40K, 238U and 232Th series in soil samples taken from areas surrounding the city of Aldama, in Chihuahua. Results of indoor air short-time sampling, with diffusion barrier charcoal detectors, revealed relatively high indoor radon levels, ranging from 29 to 422 Bq/m3; the radon concentrations detected exceeded 148 Bq/m3 in 76% of the homes tested. Additionally, liquid scintillation counting showed concentrations of radon in drinking water ranging from 4.3 to 42 kBq/m3. The high activity of 238U in soil found in some places may be a result of the uranium milling process performed 20 years ago in the area. High radon concentrations indoor and in water may be explained by assuming the presence of uranium-bearing rocks underneath of the city, similar to a felsic dike located near Aldama. The estimated annual effective dose of gamma radiation from the soil and radon inhalation was 3.83 mSv.  相似文献

The main goal of the present study was to develop an ecological integrity index for littoral wetland management and conservation in semiarid Mediterranean areas that have been highly impacted by agriculture, including the selection of pressure and state indicators at landscape and wetlands scales that reflect the status, condition, and trends of wetlands ecosystems. We used a causality framework based on the relationship between pressure of anthropogenic activities and the ecological state of wetlands and their catchments, integrating environmental, biologic, economic, and social issues. From the application of 51 indicators in 7 littoral wetlands in the southeastern Iberian Peninsula, we selected 12 indicators (5 at catchment scale and 7 at wetland scale) to constitute the ecological integrity index proposed. The potential nitrogen export per area at catchment scale and the potential relative nitrogen export from the area surrounding the wetlands were the best pressure single predictors of state indicators with a causal relationship with environmental meaning. Wetlands in catchments with more agriculture had less ecological integrity than those in less impacted areas. A wide riparian zone in some wetlands acts as a buffer area, diminishing the effects of intensive agriculture. The index of ecological integrity developed here has a number of essential characteristics that make it a useful tool for ecosystem managers and decision-makers. The index can be used to (1) assess and control ecological integrity, (2) diagnose probable causes of ecological impairment, (3) establish criteria for protecting and restoring wetland ecosystems, and (4) integrate catchment management. Without any incentive to clean up a contaminated site, remediation is often delayed until the site owner is compelled to act by regulatory agencies. In such a context, the selected technology is typically the one that will reach the remediation goals as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, this criterion is often met by overly expensive technologies, resulting in high and sometimes unaffordable total remediation costs, leading to a remediation with a negative net benefit. This study examines the effects of time constraint and benefit value on the optimal remediation strategy for a diesel-contaminated site. This strategy is developed using the technico-economic model METEORS, which takes into account the technology’s effectiveness, the uncertainty of the level of contamination, and the possibility of reducing this uncertainty through either an additional characterization (before selecting and applying a technology) or the monitoring of the remediation technology (during its use). Results of simulations with both economic and temporal constraints support a proactive approach to site remediation.  相似文献

The influence of three different artificial diets (Tetramin, Bioter food and Renutryl) on the life cycle of Tisbe holothuriae Humes, 1957 has been investigated under constant experimental conditions (19°C; 38 S). Females (F2) whose life history has been followed, were obtained from a common mother (F1). They were bred in 50 ml dishes and transferred into a fresh container as soon as they produced a new egg-sac. Offspring (F3) resulting from successive egg-layings were counted as soon as they moulted into adults. Larval mortality was estimated in two ways: (1) by enumeration of adults issuing from a known number of nauplii; (2) by comparison of the average number of eggs from egg-sacs of F2 with the average number of adult offspring F3. The life-span of F2 females, including the larval stages, varies between 23.6 days (Renutryl diet) and 33.4 days (Tetramin diet). The first egg-sac appears about 12 days after hatching, whatever diet is used. The first copulation immediately follows the last moult, about 8 days after hatching. The reproductive period lasts for 6.5 (Renutryl) to 10.4 days (Bioter). The average number of successive egg-sacs laid is minimal with Renutryl (3.7) and maximal with Tetramin (5.1), but actual egg production is higher with Renutryl (86 eggs/sac) than with Bioter (67) or Tetramin (58). Nevertheless, as a result of varying larval mortality with the different diets, eventual numbers of adult F3 obtained are significantly higher with Bioter (310) than with Tetramin and Renutryl (216 and 188, respectively). The offspring F3 sex-ratio varies in successive broods and with the nature of the food offered: more females are produced with Bioter or Renutryl than with the Tetramin diet. Then net reproduction rate, R 0, is higher with Bioter, because of the low larval mortality, high fertility, and high ratio of females resulting from this diet. The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) is similar with Renutryl and Bioter diets (0.298 and 0.301, respectively), a lower value (0.260) occurs with the Tetramin diet. These different values are discussed and compared with previous data for Tisbe species fed natural diets.  相似文献

Modeling flow and nitrate fate at catchment scale in Brittany (France)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In the intensive pig-farming (Sus scrofa) area of Brittany (western France), many surface and subsurface water resources are contaminated by nitrate (NO3) with concentrations that chronically exceed the European Community 50 mg L(-1) drinking standard. To ensure sustainable water supply, the fate of NO3 must be considered in both surface water and ground water. The fate of N was investigated in a Britain catchment, the Co?t-Dan watershed, with an integrated management tool: the hydrological SWAT model coupled with the ground water model MODFLOW, and its companion contaminant and solute transport model MT3DMS. The model was validated with respect to water quantity during a 6-yr period and for the NO3 concentration during a 44-mo period, at two gauging stations in the catchment. The coupled models reproduced accurately the measurements. At the basin outlet, the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficients were 0.88 for monthly flow for the entire period and 0.87 for monthly N load. Alternative scenarios were simulated and showed potential benefits of decreasing manure application from 210 to 170 kg N ha(-1) as required by the European Commission Nitrates Directive.  相似文献

The treatment of soils and ground waters polluted by heavy metals is of economical and environmental interest. Reduction of Cr(VI) to the less toxic Cr(III) associated to its precipitation is a potentially useful process for bioremediation. In order to develop ecological processes using micro-organisms, we have compared various sulfate-reducing bacteria for enzymatic reduction of chromate. The best Cr(VI) reductase activity was obtained with Desulfomicrobium norvegicum. Despite morphological changes induced by the presence of chromate, this strain can grow in the presence of up to 500 M Cr(VI) and can decontaminate waters polluted by Cr(VI) when seeded in bioreactors. We have demonstrated the ability of several metalloenzymes (cytochromes c 3 and hydrogenases) to reduce chromate. Biophysical investigations of the chromate/protein interaction in order to get further informations on the mechanism of metal reduction by cytochromes c 3 are under the way.  相似文献

This work presents an analysis of a stirred anaerobic sequencing discontinuous reactor with different substrate feeding strategies resulting in batch, fed-batch/batch and fed-batch operating modes. The reactor, containing granulated biomass, was fed with approximately 2.0L of synthetic domestic wastewater with Chemical Oxygen Demand of nearly 500 mg/L per cycle and operated at 30 degrees C and 50 rpm. Three feeding strategies with a total cycle time of 6 h, including 30-min settling, were adopted: batch mode with a fill cycle of 6 min, a fed-batch/batch mode with fill cycles of 60, 120 and 240 min and fed-batch mode with a fill cycle of 320 min. The system attained average non-filtered and filtered substrate removal efficiency of 78 and 84%, respectively, for all operating conditions, presenting good stability, solid retention and no granule break-up. A first order kinetic model with a residual organic matter concentration was proposed to analyze the influence of the feeding strategy on the performance during a cycle and bicarbonate alkalinity and total volatile acids concentration profiles were also quantified in order to verify the transient stability behavior.  相似文献
