Excessive production of methane has been observed at some remediation sites following the addition of organic hydrogen donors such as (emulsified) oils/lecithin, sugars, and conventional carbon + zero‐valent iron (ZVI) amendments. This is due to the fact that methanogens are commonly the most ubiquitous indigenous microbes in anoxic aquifer settings, and, under enriched environmental conditions, methanogens replicate every one to two hours (whereas Dehalococcoides spp., e.g., double in 24–48 hr). Hence, methanogens often bloom and dominate the microbial ecosystem following the addition of remedial amendments, thereby liberating large amounts of methane gas. There are at least three important consequences of this response:
  1. By utilizing hydrogen, the methanogens compete with dechlorinating microbes, thus making inefficient use of the remedial amendment (just 20 ppm methane in groundwater represents an approximate 30 percent “waste” of added fermentable substrate (i.e., hydrogen donor)—this is a common and tangible detriment);
  2. Methanogens can methylate heavy metals and their rapid growth consumes alkalinity, while generating acidity, thereby facilitating multiple potential mechanisms for creating secondary contaminant issues (i.e., arsenic plumes); and
  3. Elevated methane concentrations can exceed current and pending regulations of <10 to <28 ppm methane in groundwater and/or 0.5 percent by volume methane in soil gas (e.g., 10 percent of the lower explosive limit) and/or indoor air (methane is flammable between 5 percent and 15 percent by volume) and this will induce migration of contaminant vapors potentially causing indoor air issues.
Considering the recent guidelines for indoor air published by the US Environmental Protection Agency, it is increasingly important to prevent excessive methanogenesis associated with remedial actions. From a regulatory perspective, public safety issues are paramount; from a property re‐use or real estate (brownfield) developers’ perspective, project delays are costly and can jeopardize an entire program. The use of antimethanogenic compounds as inhibitors of protein biosynthesis and the activity of enzyme systems unique to Archaea (i.e., methanogens) during in situ remedial action can improve contaminant removal while offering safer, more efficacious treatment, simply by impeding the methanogenic bacteria's ability to proliferate and out compete desired bacterial communities (e.g., Dehalococcoides spp.). ©2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The application of direct-flame incineration to successfully eliminate a smoke-oil-mist and odor problem in the manufacture of rubber-base rug underlay, is presented. The investigation of various air pollution control processes leading to the development and adoption of the direct-flame incineration system, is covered. The rug-underlay curing process incorporating the direct-flame incineration system with primary heat recovery is described. A conference was held on October 30-31,1990 to examine discrepancies between the output of vehicle emission factor models (MOBILE and EMFAC), field and laboratory measurements of vehicle emissions, and observed ratios of pollutants in urban atmospheres dominated by vehicle emissions. There was a general consensus that significant discrepancies exist and that these discrepancies must be resolved. A number of research recommendations were made as to how models and model inputs could be improved, and what additional laboratory and field work should be conducted.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of organic and inorganic nutrients on the microbial degradation of the common soil contaminant pyrene. The material used in this investigation was collected from potted trees that had been growing for over a year in a soil artificially contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Soil was removed from the nonroot (bulk) and root (rhizosphere) zones of these pots and used in mineralization studies that tracked microbial degradation of 14C-pyrene. The factors influencing degradation in these zones were then tested by amendment with essential inorganic nutrients or with root-derived materials. As expected, pyrene mineralization was greater in soil removed from the rhizosphere than in bulk soil. The rate of mineralization in rhizosphere soil was inhibited by inorganic nutrient amendment, whereas nutrients stimulated mineralization in the bulk soil. Pyrene mineralization in bulk soil was also increased by the addition of root extracts intended to mimic exudation by living roots. However, amendment with excised fine roots that were allowed to decay over time in soil initially inhibited mineralization. With time, the rate of mineralization increased, eventually exceeding that of unamended bulk soil. Combined, the initial inhibition and subsequent stimulation produced a zero net impact of decaying fine roots on bulk soil mineralization. Our results, in conjunction with known temporal patterns of fine root dynamics in natural systems, support the idea that seasonal variations in nutrient and substrate availability may influence the long-term effect of plants on organic degradation in soil, possibly reducing or negating the beneficial effects of vegetation that are often observed in short-term studies.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine how user requirements for single-storey houses are translated into actual design layouts. Architectural students were asked to provide floorplans of houses for four quite different hypothetical users. The briefs contained information either about spatial requirements or about life-style characteristics. Another group of architectural students later evaluated the appropriateness of the designs for the intended user. An INDSCAL analysis of the data (inter-room distances) produced a 4-dimensional solution that accounted for 65% of the variance between house designs. The salience of the dimensions seemed to be more a function of the designer than of the requirements of the user.It was found that when users' requirements are expressed in spatial terms only, the designs produced are clearly a function of the user, not the designer. The more information supplied about the user, the greater the tendency for congruence in the designs. When the brief consisted of life-style characteristics only, the results remained equivocal. There appeared to be little consensus on what designs were appropriate for the hypothetical users.The experiment strongly suggested that (a) architecture students handle information about spatial requirements with ease and with a good deal of consensus on what they consider to be the appropriate design solution for each user; (b) information about life-style characteristics and activity profiles, on the other hand, is handled quite differently by different students. In the latter case, the house designs produced probably follow implicit design-behaviour theories that are quite idiosyncratic. A number of theoretical and methodological issues that require further investigation are raised in the discussion.  相似文献
