- In current biotest approaches, intact organisms or in vitro systems are exposed to sediments using different exposure scenarios. The most important issue in sediment toxicity testing protocols is the question which test phase (solid or liquid) should be used. Whole-sediment exposure protocols represent the most realistic scenario to simulate in situ exposure conditions in the laboratory. However, until now there is no agreement in how to acquire and to evaluate the data of the various available sediment contact assays. The SeKT joint research project was initiated with the aim to compare recently developed sediment contact assays by addressing reference conditions, control sediments and toxicity thresholds for limnic sediment contact tests.  相似文献

Multiple contaminant mixtures in groundwater may not efficiently be treated by a single technology if contaminants possess rather different properties with respect to sorptivity, solubility, and degradation potential. An obvious choice is to use sequenced units of the generally accepted treatment materials zero valent iron (ZVI) and granular activated carbon (GAC). However, as the results of this modelling study suggest, the required dimensions of both reactor units may strongly differ from those expected on the grounds of a contaminant-specific design. This is revealed by performing an analysis for a broad spectrum of design alternatives through numerical experiments for selected patterns of contaminant mixtures consisting of monochlorobenzene, tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethylene (TCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (cis-DCE), and vinyl chloride (VC). It is shown that efficient treatment can be achieved only if competitive sorption effects in the GAC unit as well as the formation of intermediate products in the ZVI unit are carefully taken into account. Cost-optimal designs turned out to vary extremely depending on the prevailing conditions concerning contaminant concentrations, branching ratios, and unit costs of both reactor materials. Where VC is the critical contaminant, due to high initial concentration or extensive production as an intermediate, two options are cost-effective: an oversized ZVI unit with an oversized GAC unit or a pure GAC reactor.  相似文献

There is increasing interest in the United States in producing biosolids from municipal wastewater treatment that meet the criteria for Class A designation established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Class A biosolids are intended to be free of pathogens and also must meet requirements for reduction of the vector-attraction potential associated with untreated sludge. High-temperature processes are considered to produce Class A biosolids if the combination of operating temperature and treatment time exceeds minimum criteria, but this option is not applicable to mixed, continuous-flow reactors. Such reactors, or any combination of reactors that does not meet the holding time requirement at a specific temperature, must be demonstrated to inactivate pathogens to levels consistent with the Class A criteria. This study was designed to evaluate pathogen inactivation by thermophilic anaerobic digestion in a mixed, continuous-flow reactor followed by batch or plug-flow treatment. In this first of a two-part series, we describe the performance of a continuous-flow laboratory reactor with respect to physical and chemical operating parameters; microbial inactivation in the combined continuous-flow and batch treatment system is described in the second part. Sludges from three different sources were treated at 53 degrees C, while sludge from one of the sources was also treated at 55 and 51 degrees C. Relatively short hydraulic retention times (four to six days) were used to represent a conservative operating condition with respect to pathogen inactivation. Treatment of a fermented primary sludge led to an average volatile-solids (VS) destruction efficiency of 45%, while VS destruction for the other two sources was near or below 38%, the Class A criterion for vector attraction reduction. Consistent with other studies on thermophilic anaerobic digestion of sludges at short residence times, effluent concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were relatively high. Also consistent with other studies, the most abundant VFA in the effluent was propionate. Gas production ranged from 0.3 to 0.5 m3/kg VS fed and from 0.8 to 1.3 m3/kg VS destroyed.  相似文献

Water droplet charge/mass of wet scrubbers was measured over the direct charging applied potential range of 0-20 kV, 30-70 pounds per square inch gauge (206.8-482.6 kPa) water pressure, and with spiral, impingement, and whirl nozzles. The measured charge/mass ranged from -0.0005 to 0.2 microcoulomb/gm and was directly related to the applied voltage. The water charge/mass was a function of the spray nozzle, with the smaller orifice lower-flow nozzles having the higher charge/mass.  相似文献

A water-sampling device to monitor the quality of water periodically and temporarily flowing out of concrete tubes, sewers or channels is described. It inexpensively and easily enables a qualitative characterization of contamination via these point-source entry routes. The water sampler can be reverse engineered with different sizes and materials, once installed needs no maintenance, passively samples the first surge, and the emptying procedure is short. In an agricultural catchment area in Germany we monitored an emergency overflow of a sewage sewer, an outlet of a rainwater sewer and two small drainage channels as input sources to a small stream. Seven inflow events were analysed for 20 pesticide agents (insecticides, fungicides and herbicides). All three entry routes were remarkably contaminated. We found parathion-ethyl concentrations of 0.3 microg l(-1), diuron up to 17.3 microg l(-1), ethofumesate up to 51.1 microg l(-1), metamitron up to 92 microg l(-1) and prosulfocarb up to 130 microg l(-1).  相似文献

The dietary absorption of persistent lipophilic organic pollutants (PLOPs) in humans is believed to occur via partitioning of the chemical between the lumen and the wall of the digestive tract. As such, the partitioning properties of the lumen contents are a key factor governing absorption. In this study, the partitioning properties of faeces were measured for 11 polychlorinated biphenyls and hexachlorobenzene (HCB). Four volunteers participated in the study, each of them providing faeces from a normal diet and a vegetarian diet. The faeces/gas equilibrium partition coefficient K(FG) varied by over three orders of magnitude between the different compounds. A linear relationship between log K(FG) and log KOA, the octanol/air partition coefficient, was observed. The slope of the relationship was > 1, indicating that the solvent properties of faeces were less polar than those of octanol. For a given compound, KFG varied up to a factor of 2.8 between the individuals on a normal diet. The influence of the vegetarian diet on K(FG) was negligible for the two volunteers who simply deleted fish and animal products from their normal diet, but K(FG) increased on average by a factor of 2 in the two individuals who increased their consumption of less readily digestible whole grains and vegetables in their vegetarian diet. On the basis of K(FG), the fugacities in the faeces were calculated. They were found to be much lower than the fugacities in blood. It is hypothesised that this is due to a temporary decrease in the fugacity in the wall of the jejunum caused by absorption of dietary lipids that results in equilibration between the lumen contents and the wall of the digestive tract at a fugacity below that present in the blood and the rest of the body.  相似文献

Twelve suspected former secondary lead smelting sites were investigated. Ten of the sites were confirmed to be former secondary lead smelters or lead works by historical fire insurance maps and contemporaneous metal industry trade directories. At eight sites sampled, the ratio Sb:Pb was closer to ratios from 10 known lead smelting sites than were the As:Pb and Cd:Pb ratios. Data from the 10 known lead smelting sites showed that the Sb:Pb ratio is most characteristic of secondary lead smelting sites. This is because the primary alloy smelted at such sites is antimonial lead. Lead contamination at the eight sites investigated here can be attributed At least in part to the former smelters because of the association between Sb and Pb.  相似文献

Reductions in North American sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions promoted expectations that aquatic ecosystems in southeastern Canada would soon recover from acidification. Only lakes located near smelters that have dramatically reduced emissions approach this expectation. Lakes in the Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Ontario affected only by long-range sources show a general decline in sulfate (SO4(2-)) concentrations, but with a relatively smaller compensating increase in pH or alkalinity. Several factors may contribute to the constrained (or most likely delayed) acidity response: declining base cation concentrations, drought-induced mobilization of SO4(2-), damaged internal alkalinity generation mechanisms, and perhaps increasing nitrate or organic anion levels. Monitoring to detect biological recovery in southeastern Canada is extremely limited, but where it occurs, there is little evidence of recovery outside of the Sudbury/Killarney area. Both the occurrence of Atlantic salmon in Nova Scotia rivers and the breeding success of Common Loons in Ontario lakes are in fact declining although factors beyond acidification also play a role. Chemical and biological models predict that much greater SO2 emission reductions than those presently required by legislation will be needed to promote widespread chemical and latterly, biological recovery. It may be unrealistic to expect that pre-industrial chemical and biological conditions can ever be reestablished in many lakes of southeastern Canada.  相似文献

We determined breast milk concentration of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs)/polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in 24 mothers living in Korea, and assessed the maternal body burden based on PCDDs/PCDFs and PCBs concentrations in breast milk and an infant intake rate through breast-feeding based on their concentration in breast milk. PCDDs/PCDFs and PCBs levels in breast milk from primipara mothers were found to be higher than those from multipara mothers. For total PCDDs/PCDFs TEQ level, 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDD was the predominant congener, and the proportion of 2,3,7,8-TCDD was less than 3% of total PCDDs/PCDFs TEQ level. For PCBs TEQ level, PCB-126 was the predominant congener. Maternal body burden levels of PCDDs/PCDFs and PCBs based on their concentrations in breast milk were 268-622 TEQ ng. The daily dioxin intakes of mothers were predicted to be 0.78-2.18 TEQ pg/kg/day for PCDDs/PCDFs and 0.34-0.66 TEQ pg/kg/ day for PCBs. For the first year, the body burden of an infant was predicted to be 212 TEQ ng and the daily intake of an infant was predicted to be 85 TEQ pg/kg/day, assuming the mean dioxin-related compounds concentration (27.54 TEQ pg/g fat).  相似文献
