Perchlorate originates as a contaminant in the environment from its use in solid rocket fuels and munitions. The current US EPA methods for perchlorate determination via ion chromatography using conductivity detection do not include recommendations for the extraction of perchlorate from soil. This study evaluated and identified appropriate conditions for the extraction of perchlorate from clay loam, loamy sand, and sandy soils. Based on the results of this evaluation, soils should be extracted in a dry, ground (mortar and pestle) state with Milli-Q water in a 1 ratio 1 soil ratio water ratio and diluted no more than 5-fold before analysis. When sandy soils were extracted in this manner, the calculated method detection limit was 3.5 microg kg(-1). The findings of this study have aided in the establishment of a standardized extraction method for perchlorate in soil. 相似文献

The cancer risks (CR) by oral ingestion, dermal absorption, and inhalation exposure of trihalomethanes (THM) from tap water of ten districts in Fortaleza, Brazil were estimated. The mean levels of THM compounds were obtained in Fortaleza tap water as follow: 63.9 microg L(-1) for chloroform (CHCl(3)), 40.0 microg L(-1) for bromodichloromethane (CHBrCl(2)), and 15.6 microg L(-1) for dibromochloromethane (CHBr(2)Cl). Bromoform (CHBr(3)) was not detected. The mean CR for THMs in tap water is 3.96 x 10(-4). The results indicate that Fortaleza residents have a higher CR by inhalation than dermal absorption and oral ingestion. The CR for CHCl(3) contributes with 68% as compared with the total CR, followed by CHBrCl(2) (21%), and CHBr(2)Cl (11%). The hazard index (HI) is about ten times lower than unity, not indicating non-cancer effects. 相似文献

The leopard shark (Triakis semifasciata) is an important predator in coastal marine ecosystems of California, targeted by recreational and commercial fishermen and
of specific interest in fisheries management. From October 2003 to August 2006, 169 leopard sharks were collected from the
coast of California (between 40.750°N and 32.678°N) and analyzed for mitochondrial and nuclear genetic structure. Analyses
of mtDNA control region sequences revealed relatively low levels of genetic variation (five haplotypes, average pairwise divergence
π = 0.0067). In contrast, leopard sharks were highly polymorphic for inter simple sequence repeats (ISSRs), which characterize
a broad range of the nuclear genome. The null hypothesis of panmixia in California waters was rejected for both genetic markers,
and ISSRs displayed a statistically significant pattern of isolation by distance (IBD) across the species range (P = 0.002). A variety of analyses showed that divergence is most pronounced in the northernmost population of Humboldt Bay.
Natal philopatry in T. semifasciata was tested using Siegel-Tukey tests on data partitioned by breeding site status, and sex-specific philopatry was tested by
comparing IBD plots between sexes. Although there was some evidence for natal philopatry in leopard sharks (P = 0.038), and population divergence may be related to the proximity of breeding sites (P = 0.064), we found no support for sex-specific philopatry. In addition to identifying a novel set of highly variable genetic
markers for use in shark population studies, these results may be used to better inform management decisions for leopard sharks

Natural heterogeneity in ecological parameters, like population abundance, is more widely recognized and investigated than
variability in the processes that control these parameters. Experimental ecologists have focused mainly on the mean intensity
of predictor variables and have largely ignored the potential to manipulate variances in processes, which can be considered
explicitly in experimental designs to explore variation in causal mechanisms. In the present study, the effect of the temporal
variance of disturbance on the diversity of marine assemblages was tested in a field experiment replicated at two sites on
the northeast coast of New Zealand. Fouling communities grown on artificial settlement substrata experienced disturbance regimes
that differed in their inherent levels of temporal variability and timing of disturbance events, while disturbance intensity
was identical across all levels. Additionally, undisturbed assemblages were used as controls. After 150 days of experimental
duration, the assemblages were then compared with regard to their species richness, abundance and structure. The disturbance
effectively reduced the average total cover of the assemblages, but no consistent effect of variability in the disturbance
regime on the assemblages was detected. The results of this study were corroborated by the outcomes from simultaneous replicate
experiments carried out in each of eight different biogeographical regions around the world. 相似文献

Quantification and reduction of erroneous differences between images in remote sensing 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The reliability of image data, along with the difficulty of accurately comparing images acquired at different times or from
different sensors, is a generic problem in remote sensing. Measurement repeatability errors occur frequently and can substantially
reduce the system’s ability to reliably quantify real spectral and spatial change in a target. This paper outlines methodologies
for quantifying and reducing erroneous differences between monochrome and multispectral or hyperspectral images. [Each of
these image types is acquired by an instrument that collects light photons across a variable range of the electromagnetic
spectrum (often referred to as an image band). The hyperspectral image is often referred to as a hyperspectral cube with XY
spatial dimensions and many Z bands (spectral demotions)]. In this paper, we specifically discuss the Pixel Block Transform
(PBT), the Spectral Averaging Transform (SAT), and the Wavelet Transform (WAVEL). We briefly address sensor fusion. Results
indicate that the PBT is a powerful cross-noise and repeatability error reducing tool, applicable to monochrome, multispectral,
and hyperspectral images. The SAT is as powerful as the PBT in reducing error but is suitable only for hyperspectral imagery.
WAVEL can reduce some of the finer scale noise, but it is not as powerful in reducing cross-noise as PBT or SAT and it requires
some trial and error for selecting the appropriate wavelet function. It is important that those involved in developing statistically
sound relationships between remotely sensed imagery and other data sources understand the problems and their solutions to
prevent wasting time or developing relationships that are statistically insignificant or unstable, or that lead to faulty

Summary. The pollen beetle, Meligethes aeneus, is an important pest of oilseed rape, Brassica napus. Larvae of this species feed only in the buds and flowers of Brassicaceae. One important natural enemy of this beetle is
the parasitoid Phradis morionellus that attacks larvae in buds and flowers and also feeds on the flowers. The preferences for odours of non-infested and infested
rape were tested for both starved and fed parasitoids in Y-tube olfactometer experiments. The volatile blend released from
pollen beetle-infested and non-infested flowering rape and from pollen beetle larvae was identified and quantified. Gas chromatography-electroantennodetection
analyses were performed with female P. morionellus. Parasitoids in both treatment groups preferred infested rape, but the proportion of responding female P. morionellus was significantly lower for the group that was starved. Six of the 20 volatiles identified were released at higher rates
from infested rape than from non-infested. None of these compounds was found in pollen beetle larvae headspace. P. morionellus antennae detected both major and minor components in the volatile blend. The volatiles released at a significantly higher
rate from infested rape and detected by P. morionellus antennae were (Z)-3-hexenylacetate, (Z)-3-hexenol, 3-butenyl isothiocyanate and (E,E)-α-farnesene. 相似文献

Rainfall and soils modify plant community response to grazing in Serengeti National Park 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Terrestrial plant community responses to herbivory depend on resource availability, but the separate influences of different resources are difficult to study because they often correlate across natural environmental gradients. We studied the effects of excluding ungulate herbivores on plant species richness and composition, as well as available soil nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), across eight grassland sites in Serengeti National Park (SNP), Tanzania. These sites varied independently in rainfall and available soil N and P. Excluding herbivores decreased plant species richness at all sites and by an average of 5.4 species across all plots. Although plant species richness was a unimodal function of rainfall in both grazed and ungrazed plots, fences caused a greater decrease in plant species richness at sites of intermediate rainfall compared to sites of high or low rainfall. In terms of the relative or proportional decreases in plant species richness, excluding herbivores caused the strongest relative decreases at lower rainfall and where exclusion of herbivores increased available soil P. Herbivore exclusion increased among-plot heterogeneity in species composition but decreased coexistence of congeneric grasses. Compositional similarity between grazed and ungrazed treatments decreased with increasing rainfall due to greater forb richness in exclosures and greater sedge richness outside exclosures and was not related to effects of excluding herbivores on soil nutrients. Our results show that plant resources, especially water and P, appear to modulate the effects of herbivores on tropical grassland plant diversity and composition. We show that herbivore effects on soil P may be an important and previously unappreciated mechanism by which herbivores influence plant diversity, at least in tropical grasslands. 相似文献

Cost-efficient sample designs for collection of ground data and accurate mapping of variables are required to monitor natural
resources and environmental and ecological systems. In this study, a sample design and mapping method was developed by integrating
stratification, model updating, and cokriging with Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery. This method is based on the spatial
autocorrelation of variables and the spatial cross-correlation among them. It can lead to sample designs with variable grid
spacing, where sampling distances between plots vary depending on spatial variability of the variables from location to location.
This has potential cost-efficiencies in terms of sample design and mapping. This method is also applicable for mapping in
the case in which no ground data can be collected in some parts of a study area because of the high cost. The method was validated
in a case study in which a ground and vegetation cover factor was sampled and mapped for monitoring soil erosion. The results
showed that when the sample obtained with three strata using the developed method was used for sampling and mapping the cover
factor, the sampling cost was greatly decreased, although the error of the map was slightly increased compared to that without
stratification; that is, the sample cost-efficiency quantified by the product of cost and error was greatly increased. The
increase of cost-efficiency was more obvious when the cover factor values of the plots within the no-significant-change stratum
were updated by a model developed using the previous observations instead of remeasuring them in the field. 相似文献

The objective of the study was to determine the frequency of spontaneous acquisition of resistance to select antibiotics by Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) when grown in glucose amended continuous flow culture at slow (D = 0.025 h(-1)) or fast (D = 0.27 h(-1)) dilution rates. The bacterium was grown in LB minimal medium (pH 6.25) containing no antibiotics. Upon achieving steady state, samples were plated to tryptic soy agar (TSA) alone or supplemented (per ml) with 2 and 16 microg oxytetracycline, 4 and 16 microg tetracycline, 2 and 64 microg kanamycin, and 0.25 and 2 microg enrofloxacin. Regardless of growth rate, CFU of resistant ST from the TSA containing antibiotics was less than 2 x 10(1) except for 2 microg kanamycin and 0.25 microg enrofloxacin treatments (higher than 1 x 10(9) and 4 x 10(7) CFU of resistant ST for trials 1 and 2, respectively). Frequency of recovering resistant ST from the TSA containing the higher antibiotic concentrations was less than 1 in 10(9) for all antibiotics, but was higher on the media containing 2 microg kanamycin and 0.25 microg enrofloxacin at both slow and fast growth rates. Determining a remeasurement frequency of variables over time is required in monitoring environmental systems. This article
demonstrates methods based on regression modeling and spatio-temporal variability to determine the time interval to remeasure
the ground and vegetation cover factor on permanent plots for monitoring a soil erosion system. The spatio-temporal variability
methods include use of historical data to predict semivariograms, modeling average temporal variability, and temporal interpolation
by two-step kriging. The results show that for the cover factor, the relative errors of the prediction increase with an increased
length of time interval between remeasurements when using the regression and semivariogram models. Given precision or accuracy
requirements, appropriate time intervals can be determined. However, the remeasurement frequency also varies depending on
the prediction interval time. As an alternative method, the range parameter of a semivariogram model can be used to quantify
average temporal variability that approximates the maximum time interval between remeasurements. This method is simpler than
regression and semivariogram modeling, but it requires a long-term dataset based on permanent plots. In addition, the temporal
interpolation by two-step kriging is also used to determine the time interval. This method is applicable when remeasurements
in time are not sufficient. If spatial and temporal remeasurements are sufficient, it can be expanded and applied to design
spatial and temporal sampling simultaneously. 相似文献
