A large database including temporal trends of physical, ecological and socio-economic data was developed within the EUROCAT project. The aim was to estimate the nutrient fluxes for different socio-economic scenarios at catchment and coastal zone level of the Po catchment (Northern Italy) with reference to the Water Quality Objectives reported in the Water Framework Directive (WFD 2000/60/CE) and also in Italian legislation. Emission data derived from different sources at national, regional and local levels are referred to point and non-point sources. While non-point (diffuse) sources are simply integrated into the nutrient flux model, point sources are irregularly distributed. Intensive farming activity in the Po valley is one of the main Pressure factors Driving groundwater pollution in the catchment, therefore understanding the spatial variability of groundwater nitrate concentrations is a critical issue to be considered in developing a Water Quality Management Plan. In order to use the scattered point source data as input in our biogeochemical and transport models, it was necessary to predict their values and associated uncertainty at unsampled locations. This study reports the spatial distribution and uncertainty of groundwater nitrate concentration at a test site of the Po watershed using a probabilistic approach. Our approach was based on geostatistical sequential Gaussian simulation used to yield a series of stochastic images characterized by equally probable spatial distributions of the nitrate concentration across the area. Post-processing of many simulations allowed the mapping of contaminated and uncontaminated areas and provided a model for the uncertainty in the spatial distribution of nitrate concentrations. 相似文献

An approach to transportation risk analysis for road and rail transport of dangerous goods is proposed, which is based on the use of geographic information systems (GIS) to manage territorial information, coupled with a product data bank in a risk evaluation tool. Such an approach enables to accurately take into account the local data affecting risk analysis, such as population, accident rate, and weather conditions along all the route, by means of a system which can be easily updated. The advertisement call of frogs and toads is an example of multiple message signal because different acoustic properties encode
different kinds of biologically significant information. In the Italian treefrog, Hyla intermedia, pulse rate and frequency have been found to be under stabilizing female preferences and to encode information important
for mate recognition, whereas the number of calls per call group have been found to be under directional preferences and,
thus, to be important for mate quality assessment. In this study, we investigate preferences for calls that differ simultaneously
in frequency, pulse rate, and number of calls per call group, and we ask how these properties interact with each other in
influencing female mating decisions. Results of two-choice phonotaxis experiments provide no evidence to support the hypothesis
that females process multi-attribute signals in a hierarchical way. In contrast, the pattern of preferences is consistent
with the ‘preference function’ hypothesis, that is, with the hypothesis that females rank signals along an ordinal scale of
values and choose accordingly. Pulse rate and frequency influence mating preferences more than does the number of calls per
call group. The interaction between pulse rate and frequency is not additive but multiplicative: small differences in either
pulse rate or frequency that, alone, have no effects on female choice, interact synergistically so that their combination
has strong influence on female preferences. A preference repeatability test shows strong among-female differences in preference
for multi-attribute signals. We suggest that this result reveals not only a variation in attribute values among females, but
also a variation in the way females weight and combine attribute values into a single preference score. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Lake Chapala, whose primary tributary is the Río Lerma, is the largest freshwater lake in Mexico and for the past 95 years has maintained an average storage capacity close to 6,700 Mm3. Starting hi the early 1970s, the Lerma-Chapala basin rapidly industrialized. In response to these upstream anthropogenic activities, the fisheries, aesthetics, and water quality of Lake Chapala have decreased as a consequence of the increasing chemical and biologic pollutants mainly from the Río Lerma. Additionally, the growth of Guadalajara has resulted in increasing potable water demands on the lake to satisfy a population currently greater than 4.5 million. During the 1980s, the outflow and water losses from the lake substantially exceeded the inflow and other water contributions. In this paper, the recent behavior of the hydrologic and bathymetric parameters of Lake Chapala are summarized and some important physical stresses on the system are identified. The focus of this work is the 1934–1989 period, and it is shown that starting around 1980 some of the main contributors to the lake water balance were severely perturbed and the lake reached its second lowest recorded level. The disturbances of the system are so severe that the entire regional ecosystem could be irreversibly affected in the near future. 相似文献

A chemical factory which produced polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) operated in Brescia, North Italy, (about 200000 inhabitants) from the 1930s to the 1980s. High levels of PCBs were recently found in soil, food and people living in an area close to the factory. We performed a survey among the general population living in non-polluted areas of the town in order to define the reference values (RVs) of the non-exposed population. A random sample of subjects aged 20-79 years (50% males) was selected. Participants underwent PCB determination and were interviewed on their residential and occupational history and current diet. For RV determination, subjects who had resided in the polluted area or consumed any food produced in the area in their lifetime were excluded. Eight hundred and ninety-two subjects were contacted, 579 (65%) of whom agreed to participate; 311 of them were considered for RV determination (53% male, mean age=48.7 years). Total PCB serum levels, computed as the sum of the 24 congeners determined, were: mean=5.15ng/ml (SD=8.83), median=4.11ng/ml, range=0.4-34.12ng/ml, 95th centile=14.38ng/ml. Lipid-adjusted mean and median were 897 and 705ng/g lipid, respectively. PCB values showed positive correlations with age (Spearman's r=0.76) and with serum concentration of total cholesterol (r=0.40) and triglycerides (r=0.36). No association was found with gender, cigarette smoking, alcohol or diet. Seven PCB congeners, (PCB 180, 153, 138, 170, 194, 118, and 156), including those at higher chlorination, were present in more than 30% of the subjects and contributed 99% of the total PCB levels, with a modest role of dioxin-like congeners. 相似文献

Prediction of future forest carbon (C) stocks as influenced by forest management and climate is a crucial issue in the search for strategies to mitigate and adapt to global change. It is hard to quantify the long-term effect of specific forest practices on C stocks due to the high number of processes affected by forest management. This work aims to quantify how forest management impacts C stocks in Mediterranean mountain forests based on 25 combinations of site index, tree species composition and thinning intensity in three different climate scenarios using the CO2Fix v.3.2 model Masera et al. (Ecol Modell 164:177–199, 2003). The study area is an ecotonal zone located in Central Spain, and the tree species are Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica Willd.). Our results show a strong effect of tree species composition and a negligible effect of thinning intensity. Mixed stands have the highest total stand C stocks: 100 % and 15 % more than pure oak and pine stands respectively, and are here suggested as a feasible and effective mitigation option. Climate change induced a net C loss compared to control scenarios, when reduction in tree growth is taken into account. Mixed stands showed the lowest reduction in forest C stocks due to climate change, indicating that mixed stands are also a valid adaptation strategy.
