The ascosporogenous marine yeast Pichia spartinae is a dominant endosymbiont of the marsh grass Spartina alterniflora. Results of previous studies suggested that P. spartinae is involved in iron transport processes in the grass. of particular interest has been the mechanisms of metal uptake and metabolism by the yeast, and the ecological and plant biochemical significance of these processes. This investigation examined the uptake of iron and other metals (Zn, Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, Cr) by P. spartinae, and provides data on possible mechanisms of this activity. the results suggest a) the yeast can assimilate divalent and trivalent forms of inorganic iron, as well as large organic-Fe(III) complexes, b) the uptake of inorganic trivalent iron under soluble iron-deficient conditions proceeded by a different mechanism than that of soluble Fe(II), with intracellular loadings of iron much increased under the former conditions; c) trivalent iron uptake is not mediated by hydroxamate siderophores at levels detectable by sensitive screening assays; d) the assimilation of some trace metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni) is likely to be mediated by low molecular weight cysteine rich proteins, possibly metallothionein, and; e) siderophores from other fungi can provide iron for P. spartinae. the iron assimilation data suggested that multiple mechanisms are involved, and are influenced by the concentration and speciation of iron in the system. in general, iron assimilation mechanisms are comparable to those described for closely related yeasts, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Among other things, these results indicated that future studies of trace metal mobilization and plant assimilation in salt marsh ecosystems must account for the activities of microbial symbionts associated with the plants. 相似文献

There is an increased interest in merging observations from local networks into larger national and international databases. However, the observations from different networks have typically been made using different equipment and applying different post‐processing of the values. These heterogeneities in recorded values between networks can lead to inconsistencies between different networks, and to discontinuities at the borders between regions if the observations are used as a source for interpolated maps of the process. Such discontinuities are undesirable, and could create difficulties in interpreting the maps by decision makers. In this paper, we present two variants of a method that can be used to identify and quantify differences between networks. The first variant deals with networks sharing the same region (usually multiple networks within a country) while the second variant deals with networks in neighbouring regions (usually networks in different countries). The estimated differences can be used to estimate individual biases for each network, which can be subtracted as a harmonization procedure. The method was applied to European gamma dose rate (GDR) measurements from May 2008 from the European Radiological Data Exchange Platform (EURDEP) database. Data from the Slovenian GDR network are used for an application of the first variant of the method whereas the complete dataset is used to illustrate the second variant. The results indicate that these two variants are able to identify and quantify biases reliably, and the interpolated maps after subtraction of the estimated biases appear more reliable than maps created on the basis of the recorded data. Human influence associated with land use may cause considerable biodiversity losses, namely in oceanic islands such as the Azores. Our goal was to identify plant indicator species across two gradients of increasing anthropogenic influence and management (arborescent and herbaceous communities) and determine similarity between plant communities of uncategorized vegetation plots to those in reference gradients using metrics derived from R programming. We intend to test and provide an expedient way to determine the conservation value of a given uncategorized vegetation plot based on the number of native, endemic, introduced, and invasive indicator species present. Using the metric IndVal, plant taxa with a significant indicator value for each community type in the two anthropogenic gradients were determined. A new metric, ComVal, was developed to assess the similarity of an uncategorized vegetation plot toward a reference community type, based on (i) the percentage of pre-defined indicator species from reference communities present in the vegetation plots, and (ii) the percentage of indicator species, specific to a given reference community type, present in the vegetation plot. Using a data resampling approach, the communities were randomly used as training or validation sets to classify vegetation plots based on ComVal. The percentage match with reference community types ranged from 77 to 100 % and from 79 to 100 %, for herbaceous and arborescent vegetation plots, respectively. Both IndVal and ComVal are part of a suite of useful tools characterizing plant communities and plant community change along gradients of anthropogenic influence without a priori knowledge of their biology and ecology. 相似文献

The examinations conducted in this study focus at the community level to test for disparate outcomes involving utility-based electric power generation within the crucial state of Texas. Potential policy implications are discussed as relevant to the general thesis of environmental racism postulated by justice advocates and the civil rights strategies advanced by justice advocates. Cross-sectional and longitudinal perspectives are used in testing for distributive inequities involving locations of fossil fuel power plants and emissions and output rates of emissions originating from such power plants. These tests provide empirical basis for assessing outcomes of the siting and emissions regulatory processes. While the civil rights strategies that would use Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the disparate impact standard are inapplicable, some limited findings indicate disparate outcomes involving other disadvantaged populations that are difficult to justify in context of legitimate market dynamics. Issues raised in this study have relevance to national energy policy proposals that promote many more power plants across the USA and encourage emissions trading. 相似文献

The main aim of this study was to determine how the application of a mulch cover (a mixture of household biocompost and woodchips) onto heavy metal-polluted forest soil affects (i) long-term survival and growth of planted dwarf shrubs and tree seedlings and (ii) natural revegetation. Native woody plants (Pinus sylvestris, Betula pubescens, Empetrum nigrum, and Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) were planted in mulch pockets on mulch-covered and uncovered plots in summer 1996 in a highly polluted Scots pine stand in southwest Finland. Spreading a mulch layer on the soil surface was essential for the recolonization of natural vegetation and increased dwarf shrub survival, partly through protection against drought. Despite initial mortality, transplant establishment was relatively successful during the following 10 yr. Tree species had higher survival rates, but the dwarf shrubs covered a larger area of the soil surface during the experiment. Especially E. nigrum and P. sylvestris proved to be suitable for revegetating heavy metal-polluted and degraded forests. Natural recolonization of pioneer species (e.g., Epilobium angustifolium, Taraxacum coll., and grasses) and tree seedlings (P. sylvestris, Betula sp., and Salix sp.) was strongly enhanced on the mulched plots, whereas there was no natural vegetation on the untreated plots. These results indicate that a heavy metal-polluted site can be ecologically remediated without having to remove the soil. An inventory survey conducted to determine pesticide usage in a sub-catchment of the Nzoia sugarcane belt found a variety of pesticides used in the sub-catchment, which are reported in this paper. Analysis of soil samples from seven fallow experimental field plots left uncultivated for various periods from 3 to 96?months after cultivation with pesticide application indicated persistence of high concentrations of pesticide residues in the soil, with estimated soil half-lives (in years) ranging from 0.72 to 57.75 for organochlorines and from 1.13 to 8.25 for herbicides. The mean water concentrations (in ??g/L) of the pesticide residues in River Kuywa, which flows through the Nzoia Nucleus Estate sugarcane farms, ranged from 0.12 (lindane) to 1.36 (p,p??-DDT) for organochlorines and from 0.14 (atrazine) to 1.75 (diuron) for herbicides during the heavy rains period in August 2008 while the mean sediment concentrations (in ??g/g) ranged from 0.28 (lindane) to 1.87 (endrin) for organochlorines and 0.39 (hexazinone) to 4.61 (alachlor) for herbicides. The mean concentrations of residues in water during the light rain period in December 2008 ranged from 0.17 (p,p??-DDT) to 0.71 (aldrin) for organochlorines and 0.01 (atrazine) to 1.74 (alachlor) for herbicides while the sediment concentrations ranged from 0.38 (p,p??-DDT) to 1.145 (aldrin) for organochlorines and 0.74 (atrazine) to 1.98 (alachlor) for herbicides. Although DDT, aldrin, dieldrin, and endrin were not reported in the survey, their presence in the fallow experimental field plot soils and in River Kuywa water and sediment could indicate previous application, lack of recorded data or illegal usage since 1997 when they were banned. Notably, the concentrations of alachlor, diuron, cypermethrin, and hexazinone in the water column were substantial indicating their extensive usage and residual persistence in the sub-catchment, with subsequent wash-off and leaching into River Kuywa. The concentration levels of some of the individual pesticides exceeded the EU limit requirements for drinking water and indicated potential risk to humans and cattle if the water is used without treatment. 相似文献

This study examined what factors best predict residents’ concerns about neighborhood safety. One-hundred and twenty-two participants were selected from a large, Midwestern metropolitan area. All participants lived in high crime areas. Participants completed a 22-item questionnaire that assessed their perceptions of neighborhood safety and vigilance. These items were clustered as: 1) Community care and vigilance, 2) neighborhood safety concerns, 3) physical incivilities, and 4) social incivilities. Police crime data were also used in the analyses. Our findings suggest that aspects of the broken window theory, collective efficacy, and place attachments/territoriality play a role in affecting residents’ concerns about neighborhood safety. 相似文献

In the last ten years official location policy in Nigeria for urban roadside traders, an enterprising group of urban poor operating at the lowest level of the informal sector of the economy has been very negative. Government believes that they should be removed from the streets and tucked away in obscure locations because of their tendency to deface the streets with litter and for causing vehicular and pedestrian traffic congestion. This paper identifies and assesses the magnitude of pollution created by the traders as a prelude to evolving a planning policy and strategy for regulating and formally accommodating street traders in good locations while still ensuring good environmental quality. 相似文献
