Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) as a phytotoxic substance affects health status of coniferous trees. It is known as a secondary air pollutant (formed by photooxidation of tetrachloroethene and 1,1,1-trichloroethane) and as a product of chlorination of humic substances in soil. Its break-down in soil, however, influences considerably the TCA level, i.e. the extent of TCA uptake by spruce roots. In connection with our investigations of TCA effects on Norway spruce, microbial processes in soil were studied using 14C-labeling. It was shown that TCA degradation in soil is a fast process depending on TCA concentration, soil properties, humidity and temperature. As a result, the TCA level in soil is determined by a steady state between uptake from the atmosphere, formation in soil, leaching and degradation. The process of TCA degradation in soil thus participates significantly in the chlorine cycle in forest ecosystems. 相似文献

A ground-based Differential Absorption Lidar was employed to study the dynamics of atmospheric O3 within the planetary boundary layer of a basin in the 'Fichtelgebirge' mountains, NE Bavaria. In particular, the night-time dynamics of O3 linked to the ground were investigated. The Lidar system measured vertical profiles of O3 up to 1 km above ground. For detailed analysis of the night-time dynamics of ozone, supplementary data from three ground-based stations (measuring mixing ratios of O3 and NO(x), as well as meteorological parameters) are essential. The Lidar results could be evaluated with these data from various altitudes above the basin floor. For the station with the largest (vertical) distance to the ground-based Lidar, the agreement was very good at all times. The Lidar method proved to be useful for examining the spatial distribution of O3. The observed night-time decrease of O3 at the bottom of the basin was due to deposition and to advection of air masses containing less O3 from the mountain slopes. 相似文献

This paper describes remote monitoring of air pollutant emissions by a mobile lidar (light detection and ranging)/ sodar (sound detection and ranging) system. First, measurements are carried out in the flue gas plume of a public power plant. The investigations focus mainly on quantifying SO2 emissions, but the uncertainties of such measurements are also emphasized. Furthermore, an example providing valuable data sets for the development and validation of plume dispersion models is outlined with measurements of the dilution of SO2 along the plume axis. Series of repeated determinations of SO2 emissions show a large variation in the obtained flux values, with moderate margins of error. Incomplete recording of the plume within the individual lidar scans, induced by strong looping movements of the flue gas plume, predominantly causes the variations of flux values. Therefore, the highest flux values determined are considered to be the most exact. This is verified by a comparison of measured fluxes with in situ measurements made by the plant operators. The results further indicate that lidar measurements illustrate the location and dimension of aerosol plumes better than the location and dimension of the plumes of gaseous compounds. The wind direction affecting the plume at any moment can be determined faster by lidar than by sodar because the latter requires much longer time intervals of signal averaging. Measurements show higher concentrations of SO2 compared with results from a Gaussian plume model for periods of less than 5 min after dispersion. The findings emphasize the suitability of remote sensing for detecting emissions and for investigating the propagation and dilution of air pollutant plumes. 相似文献

This article investigates the variations of nutrient (phosphorus (P) and potassium (K)) and heavy metal contents in soils. Therefore, selected regions in Eifel and Hunsrueck (region around Trier) were examined. The data base consists of more than 100.000 existing measurements plus own investigations on the main land use classes —field, grassland, vinicultural areas and forest—with regard to their intensities (conventional und biological). The evaluation of the nutrient contents for P and K was made using the manual adequate fertilization for field and grassland. The creation of heavy metal distribution maps is based on the Kriging method. In the past, soils in the region of Trier received a too large amount of P and K—especially in vinicultural areas. Mineral and organic fertilization has a great influence on the heavy metal contents on farmland. The immission of dust contaminated with heavy met|als is important on forest and grassland locations. On vineyards the use of cupreous plant protection agents is critical. The land use classes have had a substantial influence on the nutrient and heavy metal contents of the soil. In contrast to this, the intensities showed less differences. In order to reduce the anthropogenic impact on heavy metals in soils, it is necessary to create specific reduction strategies for each land use class. The first appearance of bluetongue disease, a biting midge-borne viral infection of ruminants, in August 2006 in Germany struck farmers, veterinary departments and superior authorities, as well as disease and pest control managers completely unprepared. During the summer and autumn months of the past year, the virus spread across borders in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and Luxembourg, and was eventually demonstrated on more than 2000 farms where numerous cattle and sheep fell ill or even perished. According to our limited epizootiological knowledge on bluetongue disease, the management of the crisis was of minor success. Particularly with respect to the vectors of bluetongue disease, our information is so restricted that directed vector control is impossible at present. Basic data regarding distribution, ecology and behaviour of the various species of biting midges in Germany is lacking. However, in these times of globalisation and fundamental ecological and climatic changes, in which the spread/import and establishment of vectors of disease and the agents they carry must be expected, it is essential to initiate monitoring programmes. These should be integrated into the ongoing environmental monitoring and designed by using geographic information systems and surface geodata. The monitoring data should be used to calculate predictive GIS maps of the distribution of ceratopogonids in space and time as well as to perform risk assessments with regard to bluetongue disease or other diseases transmitted by arthropods. 相似文献

In the course of a 2-year predictive testing programme for Huntington's disease (HD), six couples from a total of 52 applicants requested prenatal testing. In each case, the pregnancy was in the first or second trimester when the couples were referred for DNA diagnosis. In five cases, exclusion testing was offered; in one case, a person at risk with an increased risk of being a gene carrier requested prenatal diagnosis. In all cases, informative markers for prenatal testing could be determined. Whenever possible, the newer technique of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for D4S125 was applied to perform rapid prenatal diagnosis. Two couples withdrew before chorionic villus sampling was undertaken; prenatal diagnosis was completed in the remaining four cases. After exclusion testing, two pregnancies were determined to have an increased risk and two fetuses to have a low risk of being HD gene carriers. 相似文献
