Sedimentation and sulfate reduction under a mussel culture   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  
The sedimentation and dissimilatory sulfate reduction under a blue-mussel culture were quantified in order to gain information on the environmental impact of intense mussel farming. The sedimentation rate (3 g C·m-2·d-1) under a culture is nearly three times higher than at a nearby reference station. A build-up of sediment rich in organic material and sulfide takes place under the mussels. At 15°C the sulfate reduction rate was 30.5 mmol SO = 4 ·m-2·-1 in the upper 10 cm of the mussel sediment. The increase in sedimentation under a mussel culture and the consequent effects should be considered when establishing mussel farms.  相似文献

The fertilization and growth of eggs and larvae of Mytilus edulis L. were studied under the influence of an important ingredient in washing powders, linear dodecylbenzenesulphonate (LAS). Observable effects occurred in concentrations as low as 0.05 ppm. The length attained by the larvae was affected even by concentrations of 0.1 ppm. The possible ecological consequences of these effects are discussed.  相似文献

Larval growth rate and settlement of the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis were experimentally studied as a function of the composition of dietary fatty acids. Diets differing in fatty acid composition were composed by mixtures of the microalgae Isochrysis galbana, Pavlova lutheri and Chaetoceros calcitrans. Fatty acid content in the tissue of the feeding larvae, analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, reflected the composition in the diet. Larval growth rate was significantly correlated to the three omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) C18:3, C18:4 and C22:6, with minor differences for neutral and polar lipids. No relation between growth rate and the omega-3 PUFA C20:5 was detected, a PUFA often implied as essential for bivalves. It is suggested that naturally occurring variability in fatty acid composition may constrain larval growth. In settlement experiments in both still water and flume flow little substrate selectivity was found for some contrasting substrates. It is concluded that differences in dietary fatty acids may explain as much of settlement success as the variability of substrates. Received: 12 October 1998 / Accepted: 6 April 1999  相似文献

Abstract

Objective: The introduction of integrated safety technologies in new car models calls for an improved understanding of the human occupant response in precrash situations. The aim of this article is to extensively study occupant muscle activation in vehicle maneuvers potentially occurring in precrash situations with different seat belt configurations.

Methods: Front seat male passengers wearing a 3-point seat belt with either standard or pre-pretensioning functionality were exposed to multiple autonomously carried out lane change and lane change with braking maneuvers while traveling at 73?km/h. This article focuses on muscle activation data (surface electromyography [EMG] normalized using maximum voluntary contraction [MVC] data) obtained from 38 muscles in the neck, upper extremities, the torso, and lower extremities. The raw EMG data were filtered, rectified, and smoothed. All muscle activations were presented in corridors of mean?±?one standard deviation. Separate Wilcoxon signed ranks tests were performed on volunteers’ muscle activation onset and amplitude considering 2 paired samples with the belt configuration as an independent factor.

Results: In normal driving conditions prior to any of the evasive maneuvers, activity levels were low (<2% MVC) in all muscles except for the lumbar extensors (3–5.5% MVC). During the lane change maneuver, selective muscles were activated and these activations restricted the sideway motions due to inertial loading. Averaged muscle activity, predominantly in the neck, lumbar extensor, and abdominal muscles, increased up to 24% MVC soon after the vehicle accelerated in lateral direction for all volunteers. Differences in activation time and amplitude between muscles in the right and left sides of the body were observed relative to the vehicle’s lateral motion. For specific muscles, lane changes with the pre-pretensioner belt were associated with earlier muscle activation onsets and significantly smaller activation amplitudes than for the standard belt (P?<?.05).

Conclusions: Applying a pre-pretensioner belt affected muscle activations; that is, amplitude and onset time. The present muscle activation data complement the results in a preceding publication, the volunteers’ kinematics and the boundary conditions from the same data set. An effect of belt configuration was also seen on previously published volunteers’ kinematics with lower lateral and forward displacements for head and upper torso using the pre-pretensioner belt versus the standard belt. The data provided in this article can be used for validation and further improvement of active human body models with active musculature in both sagittal and lateral loading scenarios intended for simulation of some evasive maneuvers that potentially occur prior to a crash.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study investigated whether endorsement of personal values is associated with willingness to pay more for mobile phones with an environmental or social sustainability label. Participants were students in Sweden, Norway and Germany. A self-report inventory was used to measure willingness to pay and the importance attached to values of Schwartz’s circular model. In Sweden and Norway, participants were willing to pay, on average, 18% extra for a mobile phone with labels for environmental or social sustainability. In Germany, the corresponding share was 12%. To strive for self-enhancement values, that is, social status and prestige, as well as control and dominance over people and resources, was associated with a lower willingness to pay for mobile phones with labels for environmental or social sustainability in all three countries. Furthermore, women were willing to pay more than men for mobile phones with both kinds of sustainability labels. In Sweden and Norway, participants were, on average, willing to pay more for a mobile phone with a label for social sustainability compared to a mobile phone with a label for environmental sustainability.  相似文献

This article defines eight key climate, soil and terrain criteria that have been developed for the future delimitation of the Intermediate Less Favoured Areas (LFAs) support, a measure of the Common Agricultural Policy. The LFA scheme has existed since 1975 and is a broad mechanism for improving the viability of agriculture in areas with natural handicaps. The common criteria have been developed for the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development to satisfy the objectives in the Rural Development Policy 2007–2013 (Axis II), which aim to improve the environment and the countryside by more sustainable land management. The criteria were developed by experts, coordinated by the European Commissions Joint Research Centre, to meet the requirement for a robust and harmonised approach of identifying areas that experience natural constraints to agriculture throughout the EU 27 Member States. The criteria proposed are: temperature, heat stress, drainage, soil texture and stoniness, soil rooting depth, soil chemical properties, soil moisture balance and slope. Each criterion is described and an indicative threshold for assessment of its impact on agriculture is provided. The criteria are currently being tested by the EU Member States for a future possible legislation.  相似文献

Sulfur recirculation is a new technology for reducing boiler corrosion and dioxin formation. It was demonstrated in full-scale tests at a Waste to Energy plant in Göteborg (Sweden) during nearly two months of operation. Sulfur was recirculated as sulfuric acid from the flue gas cleaning back to the boiler, thus creating a sulfur loop.The new technology was evaluated by extensive measurement campaigns during operation under normal conditions (reference case) and operation with sulfur recirculation. The chlorine content of both fly ash and boiler ash decreased and the sulfur content increased during the sulfur recirculation tests. The deposit growth and the particle concentration decreased with sulfur recirculation and the dioxin concentration (I-TEQ) of the flue gas was reduced by approximately 25%. Sulfuric acid dew point measurements showed that the sulfuric acid dosage did not lead to elevated SO3 concentrations, which may otherwise induce low temperature corrosion.In the sulfur recirculation corrosion probe exposures, the corrosion rate decreased for all tested materials (16Mo3, Sanicro 28 and Inconel 625) and material temperatures (450 °C and 525 °C) compared to the reference exposure. The corrosion rates were reduced by 60–90%. Sulfur recirculation prevented the formation of transition metal chlorides at the metal/oxide interface, formation of chromate and reduced the presence of zinc in the corrosion products. Furthermore, measured corrosion rates at 525 °C with sulfur recirculation in operation were similar or lower compared to those measured at 450 °C material temperature in reference conditions, which corresponds to normal operation at normal steam temperatures. This implies that sulfur recirculation allows for higher steam data and electricity production without increasing corrosion.  相似文献

In order to study the ecophysiological response of a natural diatom-dominated microbial mat to an enhanced level of ultraviolet-B radiation (UVBR), intact sediment cores from a shallow microtidal bay on the Swedish west coast were incubated in an outdoor flow-through system and exposed to either no UVBR or to an artificially enhanced level of UVBR. The microbial mat was cohesive and dominated by the large (≈ 400 μm) motile diatom Gyrosigma balticum. Functional response to UVBR was assessed by measuring carbon fixation (14C) and allocation of photosynthetic products. Sediment oxygen microprofiles were measured as indicators of the balance between the photosynthetic and respiratory activity of the community. Structural variables included biomass and composition of microalgae, pigment composition (HPLC), content of UV-absorbing compounds, and composition of fatty acids. An enhanced level of UVBR resulted in significant functional changes in the microalgal community. Significantly decreased carbon fixation and lower net oxygen production (as calculated from oxygen microprofiles) suggest that primary productivity in the type of microbial mat studied is potentially sensitive to an enhanced level of UVBR. The pattern of carbon allocation hinted a change as to the photosynthetically active part of the community when exposed to UVBR, indicating a differential sensitivity among algal cells. Despite significant functional effects, pigment or algal composition were not significantly affected by enhanced UVBR. The concentration of UV-absorbing compounds was low and did not increase at UVBR exposure. Due to the short duration of the experiment (4 d), a change in algal biomass or composition was not to be expected. Moreover, the thickness of the sampled sediment layer, may have contributed to the lack of observed structural effects of enhanced UVBR. Visual observations suggested that UVBR affected the motility of G. balticum. This study, as well as other experiments with a similar diatom mat, suggest that vertical migration is a key mechanism to be further studied in relation to UVBR exposure of diatom-dominated microbial mats. OBJECTIVE: Today, a predominant percentage of vehicles involved in car crashes are exposed to oblique or frontal offset collisions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the 50th percentile male Hybrid III, THOR 99, and THOR Alpha dummies by comparing them with the corresponding kinematics of post mortem human subjects (PMHS) in this type of collision. METHODS: The PMHS data include results from oblique frontal collision tests. They include sled tests with near-side and far-side belt geometries at 15 degrees , 30 degrees , and 45 degrees angles. The test subjects were restrained with a three-point lap-shoulder belt and the Delta V was 30 km/h. RESULTS: The results from the Hybrid III and THOR 99 tests showed that, in most of the test, the head trajectories were an average of approximately 0.1 m shorter than those from equivalent PMHS. The Hybrid III and THOR 99 far-side belt geometry tests showed that the belt remained in place longer on the shoulder of the Hybrid III than on the THOR 99 and the THOR Alpha. This was probably due to a stiffer lumbar spine in the Hybrid III and to a large groove in the steel of the superior surface of the Hybrid III shoulder structure. The THOR 99 escaped from the shoulder belt about 40-50 ms earlier than the THOR Alpha. The results from the THOR Alpha tests show that the head trajectory accorded fairly well with the PMHS data, as long as the shoulder belt did not slip off the shoulder. Although the THOR Alpha shoulder escaped the shoulder belt in the 45 degrees far-side belt geometry, the PMHS did not. This may be due to the THOR Alpha shoulder design, with approximately 0.05 m smaller superior and medial shoulder range-of-motion, in combination with a relatively soft lumbar spine. CONCLUSIONS: The THOR Alpha provides head trajectories similar to those of the PMHS under these loading conditions, provided the shoulder belt remains in position on the shoulder. When the shoulder belt slipped off the dummy shoulder, the head kinematics was altered. The shoulder range-of-motion may be a contributing factor to the overall kinematics of an occupant in oblique frontal impact situations where the occupant moves in a trajectory at an angle from that of the longitudinal direction of the car.  相似文献
