Aim. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between various health and fitness measures and Functional Movement Screen? (FMS?) scores among 78 firefighter recruits. Methods. Relationships between FMS? scores and age, body mass index (BMI), sit and reach (S&R) distance, estimated maximal aerobic capacity (O2max), estimated one-repetition maximum squat (1RM-Squatmax), and plank endurance (%Plankmax) were examined. Results. Total FMS? scores were significantly correlated with BMI (r?=??0.231, p?=?0.042), estimated 1RM-Squatmax (r?=?0.302, p?=?0.007), and %Plankmax (r?=?0.320, p?=?0.004). Multiple regression analyses indicated that this combination of predictors significantly predicted (F(3, 74)?=?5.043, p?=?0.003) Total FMS? score outcomes and accounted for 17% of the total variance (R2?=?0.170). In addition, logistic regression analyses indicated that estimated 1RM-Squatmax also significantly predicted (χ2?=?6.662, df?=?1, p?=?0.010) FMS? group membership (≤14 or ≥15). Conclusion. These results suggest that the health and fitness measures of obesity (BMI), bilateral lower extremity strength (estimated 1RM-Squatmax), and core muscular endurance (%Plankmax) are significantly associated with functional movement patterns among firefighter recruits. Consequently, injury prevention programs implemented among firefighter recruits should target these aspects of health and fitness.  相似文献

Analysis of the physiological status of subsurface microbial communities generally relies on the study of unattached microorganisms in the groundwater. These approaches have been employed in studies on bioremediation of uranium‐contaminated groundwater at a study site in Rifle, Colorado, in which Geobacter species typically account for over 90 percent of the microbial community in the groundwater during active uranium reduction. However, to develop efficient in situ bioremediation strategies it is necessary to know the status of sediment‐associated microorganisms as well. In order to evaluate the distribution of the natural community of Geobacter during bioremediation of uranium, subsurface sediments were packed into either passive flux meters (PFMs) or sediment columns deployed in groundwater monitoring wells prior to acetate injection during in situ biostimulation field trials. The trials were performed at the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Rifle Integrated Field Research Challenge site. Sediment samples were removed either during the peak of Fe(III) reduction or the peak of sulfate reduction over the course of two separate field experiments and preserved for microscopy. Direct cell counts using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) probes targeting Geobacter species indicated that the majority of Geobacter cells were unattached during Fe(III) reduction, which typically tracks with elevated rates of uranium reduction. Similar measurements conducted during the sulfate‐reducing phase revealed the majority of Geobacter to be attached following exhaustion of more readily bioavailable forms of iron minerals. Laboratory sediment column studies confirmed observations made with sediment samples collected during field trials and indicated that during Fe(III) reduction, Geobacter species are primarily unattached (90 percent), whereas the majority of sulfate‐reducing bacteria and Geobacter species are attached to sediment surfaces when sulfate reduction is the predominant form of metabolism (75 percent and 77 percent, respectively). In addition, artificial sediment experiments showed that pure cultures of Geobacter uraniireducens, isolated from the Rifle site, were primarily unattached once Fe(III) became scarce. These results demonstrate that, although Geobacter species must directly contact Fe(III) oxides in order to reduce them, cells do not firmly attach to the sediments, which is likely an adaptive response to sparsely and heterogeneously dispersed Fe(III) minerals in the subsurface. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

This meta-analysis examines whether the relationships between organizational commitment (OC) and its antecedents differ across occupational groups. Two models representing different antecedents are proposed: the member model, presented by the personal variables, and the organization model, presented by role related, structural and work experiences variables. The study is based on 98 samples with correlational data for the relationships between OC and its antecedents. The total sample was divided into two main occupational groups: white collar employees, subdivided into professionals and nonprofessionals, and blue collar employees. The findings reveal that in general the relationship between OC and personal antecedents, representing the member model, is stronger for blue collar and nonprofessional white collar employees than for professional employees. For the role-related, structural, and work experiences antecedents, representing the organization model, differences among the occupational groups were found to be less consistent. In general, the findings demonstrate that the member and the organization model operate differently for varying occupational groups. The findings are discussed in terms of the need for elaboration of the existing explanations for the development of OC.  相似文献

Aqueous ammonia‐based post‐combustion carbon capture (PCC) is a well recognized and leading technology for the reduction of CO2 emissions from coal‐fired power stations. Despite its many techno‐economic advantages over its counterparts, there are still a few major challenges that could prevent its large‐scale adoption. This model‐based study addresses the most common problems of solid precipitation at the stripper overhead and ammonia slipping with the product CO2. We propose using a direct contact condenser (DCC) to replace the conventional gas / liquid heat exchanger (HX) at the stripper overhead. Three scenarios were proposed and assessed for DCC configuration: open, closed, and combined DCC circuits. It was found that combined‐circuit DCC could better enhance the CO2 product's purity, bringing its temperature to the nominal target, and producing less condensate, which is diluted and easier for downstream integration. Most important, this configuration can effectively eliminate ammonia slipping in the product line and solid precipitation at the stripper overhead. Validating these improvements at our current pilot plant would bring tremendous benefits for the commercialization of this technology. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A number of arthropod taxa contain metals in their mandibles (jaws), such as zinc, manganese, iron, and calcium. The occurrence of zinc and its co-located halogen chlorine have been studied in relation to the mechanical properties and shown to be linked in a direct fashion with increasing concentration. Hardness along with elastic modulus (stiffness) has also been linked to zinc and halogen concentration in some marine polychaete worms. The metal appears to be incorporated within the biological matrix, possibly bonding with proteins. However, the comparative advantage of metal inclusion has not been tested. It is possible that without metals, alternative mechanisms are used to achieve hardness of equal value in similar 'tools' such as mandibles. This question has direct bearing on the significance of metal hardening. In the present article, we compare across mandibles from six termite species, including samples with major zinc concentration, minor manganese, and no metals. Nanoindentation, electron microscopy, and electron microanalysis are used to assess metal concentration, form, and mechanical properties. The data demonstrate that termite mandibles lacking metals when fully developed have lower values for hardness and elastic modulus. Zinc is linked to a relative 20% increase in hardness when compared with mandibles devoid of metals. The similar transition metal, manganese, found in minor concentrations, is not linked to any significant increase in these mechanical properties. This raises the question of the function of manganese, which is as commonly found in insect mandibles as zinc and often located in the same mandibles.  相似文献

At the heart of most international water conflicts is the question of 'equitable' allocations, criteria for which are vague and often contradictory. However, application of an equitable water-sharing agreement along the volatile waterways of the globe is a prerequisite to hydropolitical stability. This article explores the question of equity measures for water-sharing agreements in the context of global hydropolitics and is divided into three parts. The Introduction provides a brief summary of the general principles of equitable allocations. The second part of the paper describes the practice of water resources allocations as exemplified in the Transboundary Freshwater Dispute Database - a computerized database of 149 treaties relating to international water resources compiled at Oregon State University; 49 of these treaties delineate specific water allocations. The third and fourth parts of the article contrast the principles and practice of water equity. It is noticeable how rarely the general principles are explicitly invoked, particularly the extreme principles of absolute sovereignty or absolute riverain integrity. Most treaties favor existing uses, and/or guarantees to downstream riparians. It is interesting that, while many international water negotiations begin with differing legal interpretations of rights, they often shift to a needs-based criteria for water allocations. Mostly, one is struck by the creativity of the negotiators in addressing specific language to each very specific local setting and concerns.  相似文献

Tiger sharks are important predators in the seagrass ecosystem of Shark Bay, Australia. Although sharks appear to return to a long-term study site within the Eastern Gulf periodically, the extent of their long-term movements is not known. Five sharks fitted with satellite transmitters showed variable movement patterns. Three sharks remained within the Shark Bay region and another made a 500 km round-trip excursion to oceanic waters northwest of the bay. These four sharks showed relatively low displacement rates relative to sharks tracked over shorter time periods, suggesting that sharks move through large home ranges that include Shark Bay. Although no reliable position fixes were obtained for the fifth shark, we were able to use the timing of satellite uplinks and the position of the satellite to determine that it had moved at least 8,000 km to the coastal waters of southeast Africa in 99 days—the longest recorded movement by a tiger shark. This movement and previously documented trans-Atlantic movements suggest that tiger shark populations may mix across ocean basins and that tiger sharks are subject to anthropogenic effects at great distances from protected waters. Finally, our method for using single satellite uplinks may be useful in estimating movements for wide-ranging species that rarely provide high quality location estimates.  相似文献
