In general, the socioeconomic analysis of natural systems does not enter into the realms of natural science. This paper, however, estimates the human-welfare effects of possible physicochemical and biological impacts of climate change on Mediterranean shrublands over the coming 50 years. The contingent choice method was applied to elicit the trade-offs in perceived values for three climate-sensitive attributes of shrubland (plant cover, fire risk, and soil erosion) and for the costs of programs designed to mitigate changes. Soil erosion was found to be the attribute of shrubland that most concerned the population, followed by fire risk and then plant cover. An increase of 1% in the shrubland area affected by erosion was estimated to cost each person on average 2.9 euros per year in terms of lost welfare, a figure that is equivalent in terms of perceptions of social welfare to an increase of 0.24% in the shrub area burned annually and a decrease of 3.19% in the area of plant cover. These trade-off values may help ecologists, policy makers, and land managers to take social preferences into account. 相似文献

Because time spent in refuge may be costly if prey lose opportunities to forage, fight, or mate, prey allow predators to approach closer before beginning to flee when opportunity costs are high. Because the same opportunity costs may apply to refuge use as to escape, prey should make similar trade-offs between risk of emerging and cost of remaining in refuge. In the Iberian rock lizard, Lacerta monticola, we studied the effects of sex, reproductive season, speed of predator approach, and potential loss of mating opportunities on time spent in refuge following simulated predatory attacks. Lizards of both sexes adjusted refuge use to the level of risk by spending more time in refuge when approached rapidly than slowly. Females remained in refuge for equal times in the mating and postreproductive seasons, but males emerged sooner during the mating season, suggesting adjustment to a cost of lost opportunity to search for mates during the mating season. When a tethered female was nearby, males emerged from refuge earlier than if no female was present, indicating a trade-off between risk and mating opportunity. Approach speed affected emergence time when females were absent, but not when a female was present. Approach speed did not affect the probability that, after emerging, a male would return to court the female. For males that courted females intensely (bit them) before entering refuge, approach speed did not affect latency to emerge, but males that courted less intensely emerged sooner if approached slowly than rapidly. These findings show that males adjust the length of time spent in refuge to both risk of predation and reproductive cost of refuge use.Communicated by A. Mathis 相似文献

Female preference for dominant males is widespread and it is generally assumed that success in male-male competition reflects high quality. However, male dominance is not always attractive to females. Alternatively, relatively symmetric individuals may experience fitness advantages, but it remains to be determined whether males with more symmetrical secondary sexual traits experience advantages in both intra- and intersexual selection. We analysed the factors that determine dominance status in males of the lizard Lacerta monticola, and their relationship to female mate preference, estimated by the attractiveness of males' scents to females. Sexually dimorphic traits of this lizard (head size and femoral pores) appear to be advanced by different selection pressures. Males with relatively higher heads, which give them advantage in intrasexual contests, were more dominant. However, head size was unimportant to females, which preferred to be in areas marked by relatively heavier males, but also by males more symmetric in their counts of left and right femoral pores. Chemicals arising from the femoral pores and other glands might honestly indicate quality (i.e. related to the symmetry levels) of a male to females and may result from intersexual selection. Females may use this information because the only benefit of mate choice to female lizards may be genetic quality. Chemical signals may be more reliable and have a greater importance in sexual selection processes of lizards than has previously been considered. 相似文献

King mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla Cuvier) collected in 1992 and 1993 from 13 localities along the Atlantic coast of the southeastern USA and in the northern
Gulf of Mexico were surveyed for variation in mitochondrial (mt)DNA and a nuclear-encoded dipeptidase locus (PEPA-2). Both polymorphic and fixed mtDNA restriction sites were identified and mapped using conventional and polymerase chain-reaction
(PCR)-based methods. Heterogeneity in mtDNA haplotype frequencies was found only in comparisons of pooled haplotypes from
Atlantic localities versus pooled haplotypes from Gulf localities. This finding indicates weak genetic divergence between
king mackerel from the Atlantic and those from the Gulf. Frequencies of two PEPA-2 alleles essentially paralleled previous findings: one allele (PEPA-2a) was common among samples from western Gulf localities, whereas the other allele (PEPA-2b) was common among samples from Atlantic and eastern Gulf localities. There was considerable variation in PEPA-2 allele frequencies within broadly-defined regions. Variation in mtDNA haplotypes and PEPA-2 genotypes was independent, as was variation in mtDNA haplotypes with sex or age of individuals. Variation in PEPA-2 genotypes was not independent of sex or age of individuals. The latter result suggests that frequencies of PEPA-2 alleles in samples of king mackerel may stem, in part, from sex and age distributions of individuals within samples, and
indicates that caution should be exercised in using allelic variation at PEPA-2 as a measure of population (stock) structure in king mackerel. The discordance in spatial patterning of mtDNA haplotypes
versus PEPA-2 alleles across the Gulf (i.e. homogeneity in mtDNA haplotype frequencies versus heterogeneity in PEPA-2 allele frequencies) may be due to either female excess at several localities, sex-biased migration, or both. Observed patterns
of genetic variation also are consistent with the hypothesis that king mackerel in the western Atlantic may have been subdivided
during Pleistocene glaciation, and that the current distribution of PEPA-2 alleles may be a historical artefact.

To understand the relative importance of biological versus physicochemical control over biomineralization, we have tested
if the chemical composition of the medium (i.e., the Mg/Ca ratio) can change the mineralogy of mollusk shells. The shells
of mollusks are made of calcite and/or aragonite, which are by far the most common CaCO3 polymorphs. Several species of bivalves with predominantly calcitic shells have been cultivated in artificial seawater with
a Mg/Ca molar ratio within the range of 8.3–9.2, well above the present value for seawater (5.2). Four out of six species
used (the scallop Chlamys varia, the oyster Ostrea edulis, the saddle oyster Anomia ephippium and the mussel Mytilus edulis) survived long enough to secrete significant amounts of calcium carbonate. The deposits (sometimes extensive) formed on the
interior shell surfaces were predominantly aragonitic. Three individuals of C. varia also increased their length by adding new shell at the margin. Contrary to the internal shell deposits, these margins were
high-Mg calcite. This implies that the marginal mantle is able to exert a more strict control on the secreted mineral phase
than the mantle facing the internal shell surface. This is the first report on an in vivo experimentally forced switch in
bivalve shell mineralogy, from calcite to aragonite due to a change in water chemistry. 相似文献

Abstract Festuca rubra L. plants are pseudometallophytes colonizing abandoned Pb/Zn mine areas, successfully employed in phytostabilization. To study the contribution of low-molecular weight organic acids to metal tolerance, F. rubra plants were grown for three months in hydroponics with Cd (1.8, 18 and 36 µmol?L?1), Pb (50, 250 and 500?µmol?L?1) and Zn (0.3, 3 and 6?mmol?L?1), separately, and in ternary combination (18?µmol?L?1 Cd + 250?µmol?L?1 Pb + 0.3?mmol?L?1 Zn). The roots retained most of the metals but their distribution from shoot to root was altered when the plants were treated with the ternary combination. The main organic acids in roots were citrate and malate. At the lowest concentrations, the metals caused small reductions in biomass, had no effects on photosynthetic pigments nor on malondialdehyde, but led to increases in root organic acids. At higher concentrations, phytotoxic responses were observed, associated with a decline of citrate and malate in the roots. 相似文献

ABSTRACTForest cover dynamics (1993-2018) was assessed in two regions on the Yucatan Peninsula: Zona Maya (ZM), 67% indigenous with shifting cultivation and community forestry; and Bacalar–Rio Hondo (BRH), mainly commercial agriculture and pastureland. Degradation (12,915 ha y?1) exceeded deforestation (5882 ha y?1) and was worse in BRH. In BRH there was a net forest loss (?1.6% y?1) associated with pastureland and commercial agriculture. In ZM, mature forest recovery (1.4% y?1) and dynamic forest cover (continuous loss and gain) were associated with shifting cultivation. Changes were more intense during 2011–2018 and gains of mature forest in ZM and deforested areas in BRH targeted secondary vegetation. Fragments of mature and secondary vegetation decreased, and connectivity improved in ZM, but opposite trends occurred in BRH. Reporting and monitoring deforestation using Global Forest Watch data is inadequate since 62% of forest cover loss represent degrading or recovering forest cover. 相似文献

Summary The geometric isomers (E,E)-, (E,Z)-, (Z,E)-, and (Z,Z)-8,10-dodecadien-1-yl acetate were identified as sex pheromone components or sex attractants in the tribes Eucosmini and Grapholitini of the tortricid subfamily Olethreutinae. Species belonging to the more ancestral Tortricinae were not attracted. Each one isomer was behaviourally active in males ofCydia andGrapholita (Grapholitini), either as main pheromone compound, attraction synergist or attraction inhibitor. Their reciprocal attractive/antagonistic activity in a number of species enables specific communication with these four compounds.Pammene, as well as otherGrapholita andCydia responded to the monoenic 8- or 10-dodecen-1-yl acetates. Of the tribes Olethreutini and Eucosmini,Hedya, Epiblema, Eucosma, andNotocelia trimaculana were also attracted to 8,10-dodecadien-1-yl acetates, but several otherNotocelia to 10,12-tetradecadien-1-yl acetates. 水产养殖一直被认为是贫穷国家农村地区居民获取食物/蛋白质的解决办法.它主要基于外来品种,一旦引进就会改变本地区系的动力学.水产养殖不仅改变淡水系统的生态,而且也导致社会关系的变化.到现在为止,水产养殖计划还没有充分地加以分析和探究.我们利用墨西哥中部一个城市的案例做分析,对农村地区在浅水池塘养殖鲤鱼对生态产生的影响和当地的社会效益作了评估.我们采用"环境权利"法,研究结果表明①养殖鲤鱼增加了水的浑浊度,减少了本地鱼品种,减少穷人捕捞本地鱼的机会;②水产养殖主要对池塘主有利而非对穷苦的农民有利.主要原因是捕捞权利的变化引起的.我们的结论是假如想要降低对生态产生的负面影响以及改善农村地区人们的生活条件应重新审议水产养殖的政策目标和对收益的假设. 相似文献

We have analysed the sensitivity, specificity, and reliability of biochemical diagnosis based on microvillar membrane enzyme assay and using discriminant analysis in amniotic fluid samples obtained from 54 pregnancies at high risk for cystic fibrosis and 125 normal pregnancies. Our results show that amniotic fluid trehalase, alkaline phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes and gamma-glutamyltransferase enzyme activities measured during 16–20 gestational weeks, in spite of their non-specificity for cystic fibrosis, have a very good predictive value for fetal cystic fibrosis or exclude the possibility of the disease. Overall enzyme activity analysis provided over 90 per cent reliability of the method. 相似文献
