The effect of mercury (Hg) on the biochemical parameters of Lycopersicon esculentum Mill leaf was studied. Application of mercuric chloride in varying concentrations (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mM HgCl2 kg(-1) sand) caused significant reduction that went up to 89% and 72% chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b contents respectively (at flowering stage), 69% in carotenoid content, 64% in total soluble protein content and 91% in nitrate reductase activity (all at post-flowering stage). The amounts of nitrate and proline increased maximally (151% and 143% respectively) at the flowering stage, whereas total soluble sugar enhanced by 57% at the post-flowering stage. Changes observed in most of the parameters, were concentration dependent. Such studies seem to be able to discover suitable bioindicators of heavy metal pollution. 相似文献

Benzo(k)fluoranthene [B(k)F] is one of the widespread priority pollutants of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that has been scarcely studied for exposure assessment. With studies reporting a high amount B(k)F in sediments and water samples around the world, it has become vital to study its effects on aquatic organisms. In this connection, this study is conducted to study the effect of different concentrations of B(k)F (1, 10, 25 and 50?µg/L) in marine gastropod Morula granulata exposed in vivo for 96?h. A concentration-dependent increase in percentage tail DNA (TDNA) as measured by comet assay was observed in snails exposed to B(k)F. Exposure concentrations above 1?µg/L B(k)F showed significant increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and lipid peroxidation value in snails. After 96?h, SOD activity was found to be doubled for 50?µg/L B(k)F in comparison to control. A significant increase in catalase and glutathione S-transferase activity was observed at all exposure conditions at the end of the exposure time. Our study showed that B(k)F induces oxidative stress in snails which further lead to genotoxic damage. To our knowledge, this is the first study on oxidative stress and genotoxic damage in gastropods exposed to B(k)F. 相似文献

This study was carried out to assess the fluoride concentration in groundwater in some villages of northern Rajasthan, India, where groundwater is the main source of drinking water. Water samples collected form deep aquifer based hand-pumps were analysed for fluoride content. Fluoride in presently studied sites was recorded in the ranges of 4.78 and 1.01 mg/l. The average fluoride concentration for this region was recorded 2.82 mg/l. As per the desirable and maximum permissible limit for fluoride in drinking water, determined by WHO or by Bureau of Indian Standards, the groundwater of about 95 of the studied sites is unfit for drinking purposes. Due to the higher fluoride level in drinking water several cases of dental and skeletal fluorosis have appeared at alarming rate in this region. The middle and eastern parts of the Hanumangarh, a northern most district of the state, can be classified as higher risk area for fluorosis; due to relatively high concentrations of fluoride (3-4 mg/l) in groundwater of this region. After evaluating the data of this study it is concluded that there is an instant need to take ameliorative steps in this region to prevent the population from fluorosis. 相似文献

Many species of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) produce secondary metabolites with potent biotoxic or cytotoxic properties. These metabolites differ from the intermediates and cofactor compounds that are essential for cell structural synthesis and energy transduction. The mass growth of cyanobacteria which develop in fresh, brackish and, marine waters commonly contain potent toxins. Cyanobacterial toxins or cyanotoxins are responsible for or implicated in animal poisoning, human gastroenteritis, dermal contact irritations and primary liver cancer in humans. These toxins (microcystins, nodularins, saxitoxins, anatoxin-a, anatoxin-a(s), cylindrospermopsin) are structurally diverse and their effects range from liver damage, including liver cancer to neurotoxicity. Several incidents of human illness and more recently, the death of 60 haemodialysis patients in Caruaru, Brazil, have been linked to the presence of microcystins in water. In response to the growing concern about the non-lethal acute and chronic effects of microcystins, World Health Organization has recently set a new provisional guideline value for microcystin-LR of 1.0 microg/L in drinking water. Cyanobacteria including microcystin-producing strains produce a large number of peptide compounds, e.g. micropeptins, cyanopeptolins, microviridin, circinamide, aeruginosin, with varying bioactivities and potential pharmacological application. This article discusses briefly cyanobacterial toxins and their implications on human health. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: The photocatalytic degradation of pyrene under UV (125 W Hg-Arc, 10.4 mW/cm2) irradiation of TiO2 aqueous suspension has been found to be highly improved with the dissolved transition metal ions like Cu2+, Fe3+, Ag+, and Au3+, etc. As the reduction potential of these metals lies below the conduction band (CB) position (?0.1 eV) of TiO2, the photoexcited electron transfer occurs more readily and reduces electron–hole recombination rate. Therefore, it has a beneficial influence on the photocatalytic ability of TiO2 because of rapid Fermi energy equilibrium between the CB of TiO2 and its surface adsorbed metal ions. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The Fermi level is referred to as the electrochemical potential and plays an important role in the band theory of solids. When metal and semiconductor are in contact, electron migration from photoirradiated semiconductor to the deposited metal occurs at the interface until two Fermi levels equilibrate and enhanced the photocatalytic activity of semiconductor photocatalyst. Ni2+ having more negative reduction potential (?0.25 eV) than the CB of TiO2 imparts negligible co-catalytic activity to TiO2 photoreaction. It also revealed that loading of Au3+ ions displayed higher degradation rate of pyrene than Au photodeposition. Furthermore, when the amount of dissolved Fe+3 and Au3+ ions gradually increases from 0.1 to 2 wt.%, the pyrene photodecomposition rate also become faster. 相似文献

Delhi is an instructive location for studying the impact of air pollution since it is a rapidly expanding centre of government,
trade commerce and industry. We have made an attempt to (1) determine the association between environmental pollution and
respiratory morbidity in Delhi for the period 1998–2004, (2) assess the impact on hospital admission of the implementation
of recent governmental regulations and (3) calculate the relative risk of hospitalization due to respiratory ailments caused
by air pollutants. Seven hospitals from different parts of Delhi were selected. The pollution profiles of these areas were
assessed and subsequently Poisson regression model was performed for the patient population. There was a remarkable decrease
in monthly average concentration of sulphur dioxide (from 17.9 to 11.1 μg m−3) and increase in monthly average concentration of nitrogen dioxide (from 34.2 to 49.1 μg m−3) after the newly introduced regulations. Particulates were observed to have marginal fall in their concentration but still
remained above the permissible limits. Gaseous pollutants, in spite of being at a level lower than the permissible level,
showed more consistent significant association with respiratory admissions. The relative risks of hospitalization due to respiratory
diseases were in the range of 1.07–2.82 in residential cum commercial areas. Comparative study of pre and post new stringent
governmental regulation showed significant positive association of NO2 with respiratory disorders in southern (RR: 1.10; CI: 1.09–1.12) and northern regions (RR: 1.33; CI: 1.27–1.39), both mixed
use areas. In spite of the improvement in the air quality, the associated health effects were found to be substantial. 相似文献

In this present paper, statistical screening and optimization of jackfruit seed powder based medium components were investigated for pullulan production from Aureobasidium pullulans. Seven medium variables jackfruit seed powder, K2HPO4, yeast extract, (NH4)2SO4, NaCl, MgSO4·7H2O and ZnSO4·7H2O were screened by employing Plackett–Burman (PB) method. PB method showed jackfruit seed powder, ZnSO4·7H2O, K2HPO4 and yeast extract were significant. Central composite design of response surface method applied to optimize the significant variables identified from the PB experiment. Statistical analysis of the experimental results showed optimal values were found to be jackfruit seed powder 2 % (w/v), K2HPO4 0.55 % (w/v), yeast extract 0.30 % (w/v) and ZnSO4·7H2O 0.006 % (w/v) with maximum pullulan concentration of 18.76 (g/L). Maximum pullulan concentration of 17.95 (g/L) was observed in the validation experiment. This experimental result explained the model was fitted 96 % as compare with the result predicted by response surface method. 相似文献
